PreS-Gr 2—The Pony Scouts are back, and heading out for a camping adventure. Friends Meg, Jill, and Annie are spending summer vacation with their ponies, and it is Meg's first time camping. She learns that camping at the state park is not about convenience, but more about working together, trail rides, taking care of the ponies, and making sure to come prepared with items like bug spray and flashlights. Meg's dad's failure to check through her things (as she has never been camping before) is a bit off-putting, but Jill's mom is prepared for all of the girls and their ponies, with extra supplies and camping experience. Warm hued, realistic illustrations, large-font text, and ample white space will assist beginning readers. "Pony Pointers" included in the back matter provide simple vocabulary and terms. Recommended for fans of "Pony Scouts" and horse enthusiasts alike.—Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI

Pony Scouts: The Camping Trip
By BabyMo
One of my five year old twins discovered the Pony Scouts series at the library. Since then, we have borrowed many of the Pony Scouts books. This series of easy reader books was written by Catherine Hapka and illustrated by Anne Kennedy.
The Pony Scouts is a club made up of three girls. Jill seems to be the leader of the group by default because she lives on a farm with the ponies. Meg and Annie are her friends who love everything to do with ponies.
The Camping Trip is a Meg-centric book. Meg is very excited to be going camping with Jill and Annie. Her family asks her if she has packed everything she needs. Meg say that he has; she thinks that camping will be just like an outdoor sleepover. This is called FORESHADOWING.
At the campsite, Meg quickly realizes that she is woefully unprepared. The bathroom is five minutes away, and she did not pack bug spray or a flashlight. But her friends are happy to help her, and Meg is happy to be with her friends and their ponies. They have a grand time on a trail ride, eating hot dogs cooked over a fire, and telling ghost stories- no need to worry, the ghost story is not scary.
The illustrations are quite charming. They are rendered in a realistic style that makes them easy to relate to. The book gives a nice overview of what to expect when camping, but it doesn’t really go into too much detail.
I would recommend Pony Scouts: The Camping Trip. This is a jolly little story about three friends and their ponies. I really liked how the girls worked together and helped Meg when she didn’t pack some of the camping essentials like bug spray and a flashlight. Jill and Annie were happy to share with their friend, which is a great message to send to children.

This is a great beginning reader series for us to have discovered
By BostonMama
This is a great beginning reader series for us to have discovered. Right now, I'm reading them to my 6 year old (entering first grade), but they will be great for her to start reading as the school year progresses. I love the characters and messages, too. It's not about little girls being frilly or having bad hair days (I'm looking at you, Fancy Nancy, despite how much we do also like many--not all-- of your books). It's about little friends who share a love of horses, and have become a "scout" troop, and their adventures. Just the type of girl I'm trying to raise. Fantastic find. This is one of a couple of series we've recently discovered that I'm putting into our gift repertoire for birthday parties. (The other is Sophie Mouse-- also great.)

Perfect Reader for My Granddaughter
By Amazon Customer
My first grade granddaughter loved it! There are 9 other earlier titles in the series and this one is the latest adventure of three girls who have horses. Like most little girls, my granddaughter would love to have a horse, so these stories already have her attention and make summer reading fun for her and much less hassle for her parents. The reading is level is perfect for giving her the confidence she needs but adds just a bit of challenge so she is learning new words, too.
