In the year 2051, some people have a second pulse. Like all who have "the pulse," Faith Daniels and Dylan Gilmore have telekinetic powers—they can move objects with their minds. But there are five second pulses in the world who have an even greater power: They are virtually indestructible. Both Faith and Dylan have the second pulse. As Dylan executes a plan to infiltrate enemy grounds, he'll have to face his only weakness—and a family secret that will threaten his very existence.

Gr 9 Up—The second book in this engrossing and suspense-filled dystopian trilogy picks up where the first title left off. Faith, still angry and looking to avenge the death of her best friend, is learning to use her supernatural abilities for the upcoming battle with villain Andre; his brutal wife, Gretchen; and their evil twin offspring Wade and Clara. In her corner, the teen has the calming influence of Dylan, her boyfriend and fellow second pulse (a person with a superpower that renders them nearly indestructible), and her nerdy, faithful pal Hawk. A scouting report reveals that the nefarious family is holed up in a maximum-security prison in Colorado. In a reverse tip of the Luke Skywalker hat, Dylan enters the compound to tell Andre that he is his biological father. Although the evildoer is noticeably softened, he cannot allow his son to dissuade him from his mysterious criminal plan. The conflict between the desolated Eastern states and the strictly government controlled Western states takes a backseat in this volume. Instead, the focus is on the main characters, along with their allies, as they attempt to save the world while dealing with secrets, lies, and their own personal limitations and weaknesses. The conclusion sets up an exciting, climactic confrontation in the final volume, for which fans will be eagerly awaiting.—Cindy Wall, Southington Library & Museum, CT
From Booklist
The earth is in danger, and once again, it appears that only Faith, Dylan, and their supergenius friend Hawk can save it. The good news is that Faith and Dylan both have “the second pulse,” the power of telekinesis. The bad news is that three of the bad guys have the same power. Worst of all, Dylan has just discovered that Andre Quinn, “the enemy of all that is good,” is his father! Filled with action, suspense, and some welcome humor, this is an accomplished second volume in Carman’s Pulse trilogy, and fans will eagerly await volume three. Grades 7-12. --Michael Cart

With the revelation the opening chapter contains, I still do not know how I was able to sleep. Tremor is one of those books that demands attention within the very first pages. It was absolutely a fabulous sequel to such a unique and high technological dystopian world.
In the first book, Pulse, we come to learn Gretchen is the leader of the drifters and mother of Dylan. In Tremor, we learn her past and discover who Dylan’s father is. This was crazy to acknowledge. Not only did Dylan survive a fight against two pulses but now he must go to war with new-discover relatives.
Pulse is left off when Cara, Wade fight against Dylan and Faith. All three are second pulses except Faith. She is just learning about being a pulse and barely survived this fight. In Tremor, Faith and Dylan join forces with the drifters to fight against not two but three second-pulses. In the process of training, Faith finally is able to acquire her second pulse. Would this be enough to fight against these three second-pulses along with an army of criminals?
Tremor is full of action and revelations with a great taste of romance. I was not expecting this at all. Usually I find it hard for a sequel to exceed the first novel, but Tremor had no problem at this. Patrick did a phenomenal job with Tremor and I cannot wait for the third installment of this series! I recommend everyone to read Pulse series– a very unique and beautifully written series.

Superheroes and supervillains in dystopia
By deesboots
I have waited impatiently for a year for this book. The minute I closed Pulse by Patrick Carman, I was counting down the days for this book to appear. I follow Carman on Facebook and Twitter, and the teases were nearly unbearable! However, that being said, since I try to be sensitive to spoilers, this review might be vague.
If you haven't read Pulse, the premise is the year is 2051, the United States of America is not anymore, and people are taken off the streets in white vans, for unknown reasons. Faith is presumably an ordinary girl, who has moved from school to school. While at her latest school, she meets Dylan Gilmore, who convinces her she has special powers, a "pulse." Because she has caught Dylan's eye, she has been noticed by Clara Quinn, a popular jock who is in love with Dylan. Faith has also caught the eye of Clara's twin, Wade. Much anger and mayhem ensues in the opening book.
Tremor picks up a few months later, with Faith training with Dylan and his mother, Meredith. Faith has a score to settle and sees white hot rage all the time, which is worrisome to Dylan, his mother, and her followers. Hawk, their geek friend from the first book, is also along for the ride, managing all things techno related. While Faith trains, and Meredith tries to harness Faith's anger, Wade and Clara are also training in an undisclosed location.
When Clooger and Hawk make an important discovery, the action amps up quickly. Secrets come spilling out every other page, and as a result, sometimes the reader is not sure which side is "good". This book does a great job of keeping you on the edge of your seat and breathless, waiting to see what is going to happen next. The action scenes are spectacular and there are many surprises (including one GIANT of a surprise) awaiting in the pages. Tremor is Carman at his suspenseful best.
There was one thing I did not like - Faith is not that sympathetic. She's brash and rude and single minded, all of these things are okay if the character tries to temper their harshness, but Faith is not all that likeable. It's understandable why she is the way she is, but there were a few times I wanted to punch her myself.
I know many people are not on the Young Adult bandwagon - I myself read anything and everything, and this is a great YA series - sort of what a dystopian world would be with superheroes and villains. But, even if you are not a YA fan, try this series, it might change your mind. Happy Reading!

Dystopian Delight!
By Tams (TTC Books and more)
In this post apocalyptic world where the psyche is your most important weapon, two young lovers known as 'pulses' are the key to our survival. An action packed thrill ride mixed with suspense, romance, lies and betrayal. Tremor will leave you anxiously awaiting the third installment in this trilogy.
Faith Daniels is not your average heroine. She is one of only a few 'second pulses' in the world. She can move objects using her mind, and communicate without speaking out loud. She is angry and fed up with her leader not being completely honest, but she is focused on her goal. To take down Clara and do whatever it takes to keep Dylan safe. Dylan Gilmore and Faith share the same gifts and an unwavering love for each other. It's their passion and need to keep each other safe that guides them, they ground each other. But, they do not play well with others. Family secrets are revealed and loyalties are tested as Faith and Dylan fight for survival.
Faith and Dylan both grow so much in this book, but it's Dylan who really stood out for me. With everything that happens to them, as much as he is tested, he stays true to himself and to Faith. The twins are absolutely aberrant, as is their mother, and I wished them all dead. Faith was so driven by anger and hatred in this story that she almost lost herself, but she came around in the end. I am completely enamored with these two characters and their love story that lies underneath the world Carman has built in the not so distant future.
This series is a must read for dystopian, sci-fi, post apocalyptic storyline fans. Action packed with a healthy dose of romance, but very little angst, which is usually ever present in YA novels. The story flows well and moves at such a fast pace, it keeps your brain straining to keep up. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for the next book. A year is just too long!
