The delightful Father Tom Christmas returns, and the cozy hamlet of Thornford Regis comes to life, in C. C. Benison’s witty, beautifully written series that is “a must-read for lovers of classic English mysteries” (Kirkus Reviews).
Although Father Tom Christmas serves his little church in enchanting Thornford Regis with a glad and faithful heart, he never expects to find himself skydiving to raise money for it. Nor, safely back on the ground, to see two of the other divers leap from the plane, then tangle in a midair punch-up and begin falling to the earth.
To say that there is tension between the men in question—Oliver, the 7th Marquess of Morborne, and his brother-in-law Hector, the 10th Earl of Fairhaven—would be an understatement. But the trouble among this ancient landed family really began a generation ago, when a marquess divorced his first spouse to marry his brother’s wife, fathering in his two marriages a viper’s nest of arrogant young aristocrats. Now they have all turned up for the show to witness this shocking event in the sky.
Thankfully the men land safely, but death will not be slighted. Much to Father Tom’s dismay, he later discovers Lord Morborne lying deceased on castle grounds. Rumors of bigamy, art forgeries, and upstairs/downstairs intrigue fly. So do whispers of unvicarly behavior between Tom and Oliver’s beautiful half-sister, Lady Lucinda. In fact, the vicar may be headed for a very hard landing of his own.
C. C. Benison gives a virtuoso performance in this gripping new puzzle, a compelling and wise holiday mystery with the irresistible allure of hot tea and warm scones on a cold winter’s day.

The Reverend Tom Christmas, vicar of St. Nicholas Church, arranges a fund-raiser for his church starring the Leaping Lords, members of the aristocracy who skydive for charity. When Tom injures his ankle upon landing after his own jump, he, along with his young daughter, is invited to recuperate at Eggescombe, the estate of the Earl of Fairhaven, host of the event. Tom soon learns a past scandal has led to tensions among the half-siblings, cousins, and in-laws who are currently staying at Eggescombe. When Tom, on an early morning walk, finds the body of one of the relatives in a labyrinth on the estate, there are many suspects. With Tom also hiding a secret from the police, he decides not to tell them all he knows until he is able to talk to the parties involved. It becomes apparent that the murder may be rooted in the past actions of the victim. This leisurely paced, English-country-house mystery has multiple plotlines and plot twists as Tom finds a long-lost relative of a friend and solves several mysteries. --Sue OBrien

Too many characters,of whom it was difficult to follow. Too much dialogue for my liking, and too slow-paced . The reveal did come as a surprise.

Clever premise for the series, disappointing novel
By K. Sullivan
Tom Christmas is the (rather progressive) parish vicar of St. Nicholas Church in the English hamlet of Thornfield Regis. In an effort to raise funds for his church (and to quickly rid it of the eyesore that is the makeshift thermometer which tracks fundraising progress), Tom has organized an event featuring the Leaping Lords, a skydiving team of aristocrats, that will take him to Eggescombe Park. Unfortunately, the event leads to some unwelcome drama. First, during the jump, two of the lords scuffle in mid-air. Second, Tom's landing isn't as smooth as he might have hoped. His accident will leave him and his young daughter, Miranda, stranded in Eggescombe for a few days. While there, Tom witnesses first-hand the many dysfunctions of his reverend hosts. A myriad of secrets and suspicions are aired and argued. This discord culminates in the murder of one of the visiting lords. Tom, the police, and the remaining family members try to piece together the mystery and determine who among them may be a murderer.
"Ten Lords A-Leaping" is the third installment of the "Father Christmas" mystery series, naturally following "Twelve Drummers Drumming" and "Eleven Pipers Piping". It isn't necessary to have read the first two books in the series to appreciate the third, but it certainly wouldn't hurt. I have to admit that I think the premise of this series is ingenious. Borrowing lines from the traditional Christmas carol, "The Twelve Days of Christmas", for a series of British "cozy" mysteries to be released pre-Christmas (October and December publication dates thus far) just feels appropriate. Even the vicar's surname is Christmas without feeling too artificial. It just fits. But then, playing against expectations, the author doesn't choose the Christmas season for the setting of the books. It's been insinuated that doing so would be too gimmicky. But considering the titles and the protagonist's name (and the fact the books are regularly marketed as stocking-stuffers), aren't we already substantially committed to gimmick? Omitting the Christmas holiday certainly isn't a fatal flaw, but it's slightly disorienting given the context.
More troubling for the novel than its lack of yuletide cheer, however, is its rather artless execution. The characters are nearly impossible to differentiate despite the inclusion of both a cast list and a family tree. The titles and relations are so convoluted that it was difficult to maintain one's bearings. The characters existed merely to drive the plot (particularly with their boorish behavior), so characterization was generally weak. The narrative relied much too heavily on exposition. Several prior events are critical to the plot, but they never resonate with the reader due to their expository delivery. The family's reaction to the murder of one of its own was startlingly dispassionate. This seemed inauthentic even accounting for their problems with each other. The fact that a murderer may have been in their midst never much alarmed them. As a result, the reader never felt there was any real danger and there was no significant impetus to solve the case. Suspense was virtually nonexistent. The mystery's resolution was, in a word, bland.
The author's word choice was also a source of minor irritation. "Invidious" and "moue" appear more than a handful of times each and their use became distracting. While the narrative largely unfolded conventionally, the author also employed letters written by Christmas' housekeeper, Madrun Prowse, to her mother. She also happened to be at Eggescombe visiting an old schoolmate. In addition to filling out the narrative, it was an opportunity for comic relief as she would scratch out impulsive statements or misspelled words and the like. While occasionally cute, it wore thin largely because it was such an evident device of the author. It was too contrived to be thoroughly enjoyable. The inclusion of a "Dangerous Liaisons" style plot device also seemed inadequately established.
Despite very much hoping to enjoy the book, "Ten Lords A-Leaping" was mostly disappointing. The premise still intrigues me and I may yet try another of the "Father Christmas" mysteries. One can hope that this particular novel was just a poor outing for author C.C. Benison.
