Nigel West is a former officer of the British secret intelligence service, MI6, and conservative party member of the British Parliament. He has written extensively on espionage and counterintelligence and given numerous lectures on those subjects.

Double Agent Decorated by England & Germany!!

The 6 chapters that Double Agent "Garbo" wrote are mesmerizing, but the 6 chapters West wrote are boring, due to unreferenced acronyms and names of people whose stories are not developed. If you read just the quoted items in the boring chapters, they go a lot faster and are more interesting. Quotes are from transmissions of German high command and from Garbo or his "agents." Garbo, real name Juan Pujol Garcia, was a Spaniard who wanted to help the British, but they turned him away THREE times! Then, one of Garbo's "guesses" for the Germans nearly exposed an actual British operation AND a search for him throughout England did not locate him, because he was guessing from Portugal. Only then did British intelligence take him seriously and decide to admit him to England. Later, with help from British intelligence, Garbo invented a network of approximately 26 "agents" in order to thwart Hitler's domination of the free world. Having gone through the Spanish Civil War in the 30's, Garbo didn't want to fight again and thought becoming a double agent might be the way he could contribute to freedom. After meeting him in London, British intelligence named him Garbo because of his incredible acting ability. A strategy that proved useful was to give the Germans real information but to delay it. Garbo helped preserve the success of D-Day by convincing the Germans that the Normandy landing was a feint and the big Allied assault was to be at the Pas de Calais later on. As a result, the largest German forces were stationed away from Normandy for about 3 months. What made me want to read this book was the 89 minute movie of real footage (not actors) that you can see on streaming Netflix, called "Garbo: The Spy." After the war, Garbo defected to South America, fearing Nazi reprisal, although he'd already been given the highest Nazi award. Despite reports saying Garbo died in Africa, Nigel West tracked him down in 1984. A big challenge was to find out what his real name was, because "Garcia" is like "Smith." After being assured that double agents he had known were already dead, Garbo came out of hiding to receive Britain's highest award, to meet grateful survivors and commanders of D-Day, and to meet Prince Phillip. It is very moving to see him as a tearful old man, walking among the graves of Allied dead. Garbo's story shows how ONE PERSON can make a huge difference, because he saved hundreds of thousands of lives! Inspiring!

Very interesting, insightful story. Offers a glimpse of what the "spy world" is like - only a glimpse. "Agent Garbo" and "Operation Garbo" should be offered and read as a complementing set.

FASCINATING story of this spy. Love how it is narrated in this book. If you don't already know the story of the spy who secured our ability to actually have D-Day go off with success, you should get this book. FASCINATING story.
