After making amends, they are given balloons, which Kitten loves. “Based on the creation of Rob Scotton,” this beginning reader book tells what happens when Splat the Cat visits a fair with his pals Spike and Plank. They buy four éclairs, one for each of them and another for their injured friend, Kitten. Spike takes care of the treats while his friends go on a ride. When it’s over, Spike has eaten all the pastries. After another misadventure at a game booth, they take some balloons to their injured friend. Both the story and the digital artwork are a bit bland. Though the text is written in prose, a number of words rhyming with fair (wheelchair, bear, lair, hair, scared, declared, wear, wares, éclairs, flair, etc.) appear throughout the story, usually at the ends of sentences, phrases, or lines. My two year old loves it, I don't

We have many Splat the Cat books, the I Can Read books (like this) and the ones by Rob Scotton. The I Can Read books tend to have awkward transitions and odd things all to use certain words, so they tend to be much weaker, in terms of story, than the RS authored books. This is perhaps my least favorite, the whole bit about going into a scary tent is out of left field and goes no where, but my daughter LOVES it and wants me to read it over and over. I tend to change a lot of the words as I go along to make it sound less awkward.

another winner for beginner readers

My 7 year old loves Splat and the books always have a nice moral- this one is about doing something nice for a friend and having fun. The books have the word family listed at the beginning for the child to review as they get ready to read, which is helpful. This book focuses on "-air" and "-are" words, drawing the child's attention to the 2 different spellings for the same sounds.

Great format for Kindle Fire. It's an early reader, so it uses simple words to tell a cute story. Kitten broke her leg and can't go to the fair. Splat and his friends, Plank and Spike, go without her. They want to bring her something, though. Zany antics ensue...ok, not that zany. We all knew Spike was going to eat those doughnuts when the bought them. Why would they let him hold them??? Then, I'm not sure if they had to go because it was time, or because they ticked off a carny...
