From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—The Pony Scouts are back, and heading out for a camping adventure. Friends Meg, Jill, and Annie are spending summer vacation with their ponies, and it is Meg's first time camping. She learns that camping at the state park is not about convenience, but more about working together, trail rides, taking care of the ponies, and making sure to come prepared with items like bug spray and flashlights. Meg's dad's failure to check through her things (as she has never been camping before) is a bit off-putting, but Jill's mom is prepared for all of the girls and their ponies, with extra supplies and camping experience. Warm hued, realistic illustrations, large-font text, and ample white space will assist beginning readers. "Pony Pointers" included in the back matter provide simple vocabulary and terms. Recommended for fans of "Pony Scouts" and horse enthusiasts alike.—Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI

Pony Scouts: The Camping Trip
By BabyMo
One of my five year old twins discovered the Pony Scouts series at the library. Since then, we have borrowed many of the Pony Scouts books. This series of easy reader books was written by Catherine Hapka and illustrated by Anne Kennedy.

The Pony Scouts is a club made up of three girls. Jill seems to be the leader of the group by default because she lives on a farm with the ponies. Meg and Annie are her friends who love everything to do with ponies.

The Camping Trip is a Meg-centric book. Meg is very excited to be going camping with Jill and Annie. Her family asks her if she has packed everything she needs. Meg say that he has; she thinks that camping will be just like an outdoor sleepover. This is called FORESHADOWING.

At the campsite, Meg quickly realizes that she is woefully unprepared. The bathroom is five minutes away, and she did not pack bug spray or a flashlight. But her friends are happy to help her, and Meg is happy to be with her friends and their ponies. They have a grand time on a trail ride, eating hot dogs cooked over a fire, and telling ghost stories- no need to worry, the ghost story is not scary.

The illustrations are quite charming. They are rendered in a realistic style that makes them easy to relate to. The book gives a nice overview of what to expect when camping, but it doesn’t really go into too much detail.

I would recommend Pony Scouts: The Camping Trip. This is a jolly little story about three friends and their ponies. I really liked how the girls worked together and helped Meg when she didn’t pack some of the camping essentials like bug spray and a flashlight. Jill and Annie were happy to share with their friend, which is a great message to send to children.

This is a great beginning reader series for us to have discovered
By BostonMama
This is a great beginning reader series for us to have discovered. Right now, I'm reading them to my 6 year old (entering first grade), but they will be great for her to start reading as the school year progresses. I love the characters and messages, too. It's not about little girls being frilly or having bad hair days (I'm looking at you, Fancy Nancy, despite how much we do also like many--not all-- of your books). It's about little friends who share a love of horses, and have become a "scout" troop, and their adventures. Just the type of girl I'm trying to raise. Fantastic find. This is one of a couple of series we've recently discovered that I'm putting into our gift repertoire for birthday parties. (The other is Sophie Mouse-- also great.)

Perfect Reader for My Granddaughter
By Amazon Customer
My first grade granddaughter loved it! There are 9 other earlier titles in the series and this one is the latest adventure of three girls who have horses. Like most little girls, my granddaughter would love to have a horse, so these stories already have her attention and make summer reading fun for her and much less hassle for her parents. The reading is level is perfect for giving her the confidence she needs but adds just a bit of challenge so she is learning new words, too.

Quantum Mechanics aims to teach those parts of the subject which every physicist should know. The object is to display the inherent structure of quantum mechanics, concentrating on general principles and on methods of wide applicability without taking them to their full generality. This book will equip students to follow quantum-mechanical arguments in books and scientific papers, and to cope with simple cases. To bring the subject to life, the theory is applied to the all-important field of atomic physics. No prior knowledge of quantum mechanics is assumed. However, it would help most readers to have met some elementary wave mechanics before. Primarily written for students, it should also be of interest to experimental research workers who require a good grasp of quantum mechanics without the full formalism needed by the professional theorist. Quantum Mechanics features:

  • A flow diagram allowing topics to be studied in different orders or omitted altogether.
  • Optional "starred" and highlighted sections containing more advanced and specialized material for the more ambitious reader.
  • Sets of problems at the end of each chapter to help student understanding. Hints and solutions to the problems are given at the end of the book.

An undergraduate text by a great teacher
By henrique fleming
The book I am reviewing is F. Mandl's "Quantum Mechanics", from the celebrated Manchester Physics Series. These are books especially planned for undergraduates, so that they are not too long and have hints or solutions to almost all the (numerous) exercises. The author is a famous writer in science. He wrote, for instance, the first redable book on quantum electrodynamics (the "Mandl", as it was called), another volume of the Manchester Series, "Statistical Physics", one of the present favorite introductions to the same subject (with G. Shaw) and a wonderful Yellow Report from CERN on Symmetries, now unfortunately very hard to find. Mandl has the gift of anticipating doubts and of providing clear and direct answers. In a book of quantum mechanics there are traditional points where disasters frequently occur. One is the description of the continuous spectra, with the "box normalization". Mandl excells here. Other is the perturbatio! n theory of a degenerate level. Mandl's is the best treatment I've seen. As is usual in texts of this level, there is no Dirac equation. On the other hand, a chapter is devoted to Dirac's formalism, in terms of bras and kets. At the modern side, a very clear explanation of Bell's inequality, and problems connected to it, is given. To sum up, the whole text is sound and very clear. The exercise are good, and the hints most helpful. Excellent text.

Mandl's quantum text
By Greg Severn
This text is better than Griffith's text. It is succinct,
it says more in fewer pages, and the economy of expression does
not compromise in necessary depth for the introductory student.
The student leaves the shallows more quickly, and gets to
Bell's theorem more quickly too, on the other side. Lucid!

Review

“Cooking is Cool makes preparing and enjoying food with children a breeze! All recipes are heat-free, and having sampled some, I can vouch for the delicious recipes and their artful presentations. Cooking is Cool is perfectly suited to young cooks in classrooms, child care settings, or homes. I like that the food presentations are artfully pleasing to children. I especially like the little “Did You Know” information boxes, offering such facts like, “Did you know humans are the only animals to peel a banana from the stem end?” Marianne E. Dambra has perfected heat-free cooking for kids and made the learning experiences as important as the yummy results! I highly recommend Cooking is Cool for kids to enjoy learning through cooking.”
—MaryAnn F. Kohl, process art author and educational consultant, and author of Great American Artists for Kids and Art with Anything

“We love the book and have tried all the recipes. Not only do they taste delicious, but they are easy and fun for the kids to make, too! They ask me all the time to make the fairytale punch.”
—Bianca Affronti, preschool teacher, Pea Pods Child Care Center

“I can’t tell you how excited I am that somebody finally made a cookbook that lets children actually prepare the food themselves instead of just watching. Children love to cook, and I am thrilled to be using Cooking Is Cool at our center!”
—Julie McCollumn, Owner and Director, Kids Club Child Care Center

“I find the book very exciting. It has a great variety of cooking activities that engage the children, and it is very simple to plan for each. I love that the photographs provide a glimpse of what the recipes will look like. I would recommend this book to early childhood educators and parents.”
—Colleen Moynihan, owner, Pea Pods Child Care Center

“It’s not always convenient to use an oven while working in child care, but with this book I can make healthy, fun, and easy snacks all the time. I have tried some of the recipes with my kids, and they loved making them and then eating what they made. This book provides great ways to spend time with kids.”
—Brooke Nicholson, pre-kindergarten teacher

“We love this book! I have two daughters, ages 4 and 6, who are always eager to help in the kitchen. We have had so much fun trying several of the recipes and the book suggestions add another element of fun. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants easy recipes to follow that will help introduce cooking to kids!”
—Megan Vargulick, parent

“This book is amazingly unique in its incredible ability to create perfect bonding experiences between children and adults. Any parent or educator would be lucky to own this fun and brilliant work!”
—Ashleigh Voros, parent and education major at SUNY Geneseo

Heat-Free Cooking, and BEAUTIFUL!
By MaryAnn F. Kohl
I just received my copy and my first reaction was....
"Oh, it's so beautiful!" Then I started reading and
checking it out in detail. I love the cover and the
graphics, and how well organized and clear the format
is. Great large photos! Fun recipes. The heat free aspect
is wonderful for busy teachers and childcare people.
Marianne Dambra and Redleaf Press have given us a
wonderful resource. I can't say enough about it.
This will be a huge benefit to anyone with children
in any venue. As the author of many art books for
children, I'm especially impressed with how the
author allows children to express the food pres-
entation creatively. 5 stars.

Classroom Hit!
By Rebecca
My preschoolers LOVE this book. The children and I have made 5 of the recipes so far. Not all of the children love all of the recipes, but the process was what was fantastic. We have talked about healthy eating (which is a big part of this book), the measuring, mixing, and trying new things. The cooking has become a favorite Science activity in our class. The children take ownership of snack time, and enjoy making new things. I love that they are able to participate, because it is heat free.
P.S. the Fruit Burritos is the favorite of our class :)

Finalist, Best Writing Award, Melbourne Prize for Literature, 2015

A brilliant collection of short stories by a new voice in Australian fiction.

A student travels to Estonia to investigate his violent father's upbringing.
A woman is possessed by visions of her brother's brutal death at a lake in Finland.
A bride plumbs the depths of her loathing for her husband on a journey across Africa.
A lonely boy is haunted by nightmares of a new classmate who has an affair with their teacher.

Each of the stories in The Double is unnerving, and unforgettable. Ranging from rural Australia to Northern Europe and beyond, from the dark past of the Soviet era to a terrifying vision of the near future, this collection marks the arrival of a unique and bewitching talent.

Maria Takolander is a senior lecturer in literature at Deakin University in Geelong. She is the author of a work of literary criticism and two poetry collections. Her poems have featured in annual best-of anthologies for the past seven years. This is her first book of fiction.

'Maria Takolander's stories are written in a bewitching minor key. Haunting and mysterious, this is a collection that you will want to savour, then read all over again.' Danielle Wood

'A captivating and slightly uncomfortable series of tales that are in turns frightening, amusing, haunting and reassuring...The settings alternate between the familiar scenes of rural Australia and the more unknown background of Northern Europe, but it is the characters that really shine in this collection...Takolander's stories are...undeniably powerful.' Australian Bookseller and Publisher

'Fiercely intelligent and idiosyncratic, sometimes shot through with black humour, sometimes pressing down on the reader with the full weight of human horror...Individually, Takolander's stories can be bleak. But collectively they are thrilling. Slender as this collection may be, it announces the arrival of a considerable talent.' Australian

'An intriguing collection of short stories, The Double comprises an unsettling journey into the lives of Takolander's peculiarly distant and troubled protagonists as they explore the dark recesses of the human condition.' Melbourne Review

'Incisive, economic, imbued with simple depth and glittering with hard truth, The Double is a literary force. Poetic in its brevity, the stories are none the less substantial, speaking of the nature of courage, the damage done by ignoring the past, and human beings' ability to torture themselves.' West Australian

'[Maria Takolander's] stories seem like wordscapes that offer panoramic views without shunning fine, sometimes devastating, details. They reverberate with the passage of time, especially those stories that link Australia to northern Europe, to Stalinism...Takolander's prose has a quite gorgeous directness, a desert-like sparseness, even when - no, especially when - the topic is melancholy or fearsome.' Australian Book Review

'This debut short-story collection...is eerily beautiful and not for the faint of heart...It's the kind of book that will unnerve you and keep you up at night.' Readings

'An intriguing collection of short stories...The esoteric tales explore themes of passion, death, desire and redemption.' Sunday Life/Sun Herald

'shot through...brilliantly with humour and satire.' Otago Daily Times

Each of its twenty-seven chapters -- which cover the full spectrum of insurance law for the construction industry -- is written by a variety of authors, all experts in this challenging and diverse area of law.

The construction industry itself entails huge financial risk and considerable hazard for its workforce, as the authors point out in the introduction, adding with reference to the construction of the Gherkin in London, that in this risky enterprise, contractors and consultants share the chance of mistakes with the insurance industry. In an area of law dealing with long term projects usually valued in millions, this book, as the authors explain, is about how insurers and the construction industry share such risks.

Distinguished for its clarity as well as its erudite and certainly practical approach, this book, in the words of its team of authors, is `intended for lawyers, contracts managers, risk managers, insurers and brokers working on commercial projects within the construction industry.'

In whatever aspect of the construction industry - and its insurers - you are professionally involved, you'll appreciate the book's logical four part structure in which the diverse topics covered are grouped under four main categories.

As appropriate to its subject matter, the book is well constructed. Featuring numbered paragraphs and meticulous footnoting throughout, it has not only a detailed table of contents at the front, but an equally detailed list of contents at the beginning of each chapter.

All this, plus the sixteen page index makes this particular work of reference exceptionally accessible and easily navigable, especially when you are under pressure and you need all the help you can get.

And as you would expect, there are extensive tables of cases and legislation. Speaking of which, the book concludes with a final chapter on future changes in insurance law which, as its authors explain, looks very different from the similar chapter in the first edition following the progress made by the Law Commission to reform insurance law. As this process continues, the authors optimistically predict that `the third edition of this book may be very different again....' Which means that, once you've perused this current edition, you'll no doubt look forward to its successor!

Published in 2013 and updated to 31st August 2012, this new edition is supplemented by a website set up by the RPC in collaboration with the OUP, which will update you on issues pertaining to the book's content.

if only we did this it would be a harmonious world
By Robert W. Smith
The Dali Lama presents many very useful suggestions for things that we can and must do to make this world more harmonious. the ideas are elegantly simple, but so brilliant. it is very easy to read the text, written for high schoolers and beyond. if you are an avid reader, you won't get bored. it's 160 pages in length, so, it's well within the scope of reading in one afternoon. don't! take your time and reflect on words, sentences, paragraphs. the earth and diverse groups of its people are inter-connected, so, it's not possible to separate out these topics. thus, these topics are addressed all the while addressing specific suggestions for compassionate action! i give this an "A-" and it comes highly recommended.

We are all in this together.
By Yvo Wueest
The Dalai Lama represents a great culture centered on a wisdom tradition that has survived intact into modern times. In this book he discusses critical issues of our time with a handfull intellectuals. Also these fresh and spirites dialogues have taken place in October 1989, it's still worthwile to read this book. Because de D.L. an his panelists focus on the understanding that a deep awareness of our shared desire to avoid pain leads to an awareness of our responsibility to relieve others of suffering. It is we who bear the responsibility, who face the challenge, who must take care of the planet, not just for ourselves, but for the future and for our children.

Jeeves and the Wedding Bells (Jeeves and Wooster Book 16), by Sebastian Faulks

Bertie Wooster (a young man about town) and his butler Jeeves (the very model of the modern manservant)—return in their first new novel in nearly forty years: Jeeves and the Wedding Bells by Sebastian Faulks.

P.G. Wodehouse documented the lives of the inimitable Jeeves and Wooster for nearly sixty years, from their first appearance in 1915 ("Extricating Young Gussie") to his final completed novel (Aunts Aren't Gentlemen) in 1974. These two were the finest creations of a novelist widely proclaimed to be the finest comic English writer by critics and fans alike.

Now, forty years later, Bertie and Jeeves return in a hilarious affair of mix-ups and mishaps. With the approval of the Wodehouse estate, acclaimed novelist Sebastian Faulks brings these two back to life for their legion of fans. Bertie, nursing a bit of heartbreak over the recent engagement of one Georgina Meadowes to someone not named Wooster, agrees to "help" his old friend Peregrine "Woody" Beeching, whose own romance is foundering. That this means an outing to Dorset, away from an impending visit from Aunt Agatha, is merely an extra benefit. Almost immediately, things go awry and the simple plan quickly becomes complicated. Jeeves ends up impersonating one Lord Etringham, while Bertie pretends to be Jeeves' manservant "Wilberforce,"—and this all happens under the same roof as the now affianced Ms. Meadowes. From there the plot becomes even more hilarious and convoluted, in a brilliantly conceived, seamlessly written comic work worthy of the master himself.

*Starred Review* What, ho?! This blighter Faulks, after making a reasonably good show of posing as Ian Fleming (Devil May Care, 2009), has the unmitigated gall to take a run at impersonating the inimitable P. G., the very incarnation of sui generis? Doesn’t he know that Wodehouseans far and wide, well born and less so, will be sharpening their incisors for the chance to take a chomp at the hindquarters of the cheeky upstart? But wait. Hold off, old sports. Young Faulksie just may have the gray matter to make a go of it. The first order of business when attempting to offer homage to Sir Pelham Grenville is to construct a plot as screwball crazy as anything Shakespeare ever concocted in the Forest of Arden (disguises, mistaken identities, catastrophic kerfuffles all de rigueur); next is to plop bumbling aristocrat Bertie Wooster in the middle of the muddle; and, finally, of course, it’s necessary to set Bertie’s unflappable manservant, the all-knowing Jeeves, to the herculean task of making it all work. Faulksie’s plot is spot on: Bertie’s pal, Peregrine Woody Beeching, has been dumped by his beloved, but Bertie is on the case. The plan, for reasons only a savvy Hegelian could fathom, involves Bertie posing as a manservant and Jeeves as his master. Brilliant stroke, that, allowing Jeeves to show his stuff at dinner-table chitchat and Bertie to, well, spill the gravy. Naturally, it all takes place at a country house (Wodehouse’s Forest of Arden), and, equally naturally, Miss Georgiana Meadowes, who makes Bertie’s heart go pitty-pat, is also in attendance. OK, fine, this P. G. poseur gets the plot right, but what about the all-important patter, the Bertie-isms and the priceless Bertie-Jeeves dialogue duets? But Faulksie nails it again, evoking rather than imitating, but doing so in perfect pitch. Finally, old-timers will doubtless recoil in horror at the shocking conclusion, but let’s all loosen our stuffed shirts and let the new guy have his way. Top drawer. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Expect major media attention for the return of Bertie and Jeeves. --Bill Ott

Review
"It is a wonderfully happy book." Guardian "This light-hearted romp is delightfully witty, packed with puns and boasts a few phrases that Wodehouse himself would have deemed top-hole. Splendid stuff." Sunday Mirror "The finished product resembles, in all but cover, a traditional Wodehousian yarn. Harking back to the summer of 1926, it is a gentle, jolly tale - of farce and mistaken identity, of love lost and found, of cricket matches, village fetes and the eccentric upper classes." Telegraph "At two memorable moments in Jeeves and the Wedding Bells I did indeed laugh until I cried... Jeeves and the Wedding Bells is a masterpiece... This is a pitch-perfect undertaking: proof, almost a century after his debut, that Jeeves may not be so inimitable after all." Spectator "The plot is satisfyingly convoluted in the best Wodehouse tradition ... A genuine addition to my growing Wodehouse collection and there is no higher tribute." Daily Express "He catches the Wodehousean idiom, periphrasis, surreal similes and bally silliness to a T, all done with love. Please commission a dozen more, Hutchinson." Literary Review "From the first page of Sebastian Faulks's entirely delightful book ... we are transported to Wodehouse land. All the details, of plot, of character, and of setting, are lovingly drawn. The hours spent reading Jeeves and the Wedding Bells are pure pleasure." Financial Times "Faulks has caught the mood and the dialogue perfectly" Sunday Express

Many are called but few are Wooster
By Lonya
And even fewer are Wodehouse. Great literary characters don't always die after the creator moves on to the great publishers' clearing house in the sky. Perhaps the more beloved the character the more of a need there is to create a fresh adventure for them. There has been no shortage of homages to Sherlock Holmes or James Bond for example. It should be no surprise that most of these efforts are unsuccessful. At best they seem like pale imitations of the original and at worst they tarnish your memory of the character(s) you came to know and love. There are many talented Elvis impersonators out there but no matter how good no reasonable listener would mistake the latter for the real thing. Sebastian Faulks has entered this arena (as he has apparently done with James Bond) and penned "Jeeves and the Wedding Bells" and he's made a very good job of it. In the vernacular of Bertie Wooster there were parts of the book that made me feel pretty bobbish. That said, I think there were a couple of areas, one minor and one major, that didn't quite work for me. All in all, I did enjoy the book. It was a fun story to read and had many of the antics that fans of Jeeves and Wooster have come to know and love. But it isn't quite Wodehouse. I don't know who could be, but it was a good effort nonetheless.

Trying to sort out the plot line in a Jeeves and Wooster story is something of a fool's errand. As with Wodehouse's own stories this one has too many comedic twists and turns to be summarized without spoiling the entire plot. I think it fair to highlight two interesting plot points. First, romantic entanglements, engagements, and romantic misunderstandings are center stage as they often were in the original. Second, the book opens with Wooster playing butler to Jeeves. (That should not be a spoiler as that is how the story opens. Faulks plays this switcheroo to good effect.

There was a lot to like about Jeeves and the Wedding Bells. First, Faulks is no "Elvis impersonator". Far from it. I think for the most part (more on this later) he has stayed true to the essential character of Jeeves and Wooster. Jeeves is the erudite valet , a true renaissance man whilst Wooster remains the empty-headed if likeable and well-intentioned man about town who has reached his station in life purely by accident of birth. In addition to reading and very much enjoying Wodehouse throughout my younger years I also adored Hugh Laurie's and Stephen Fry's wonderful television adaptation, Jeeves & Wooster: The Complete Series. I think Laurie and Fry did for Wooster and Jeeves what Leo McKern did for Rumpole: take a character and make it his own. Picturing Fry and Laurie as I read the book actually did add to my enjoyment of the story.

There were also a couple of downsides for me. Wodehouse's use of language, particularly this highly-exaggerated, stylized, and comedic usage of Wooster always struck me as a satire on a dialect that was still alive amongst some portion of the upstairs classes of Wodehouse's day. It likely never existed in that form but it was a take of contemporary or at least a recent speech patter. Faulks does not have the benefit of `riffing' on contemporary speech patterns and has to rely on trying to recreate a dialect based solely on Wodehouse's writing. I think there were a few instances in the story where certain phrases and stylings sounded a bit jarring. The fact that I only noticed that sparingly is to Faulk's credit.
Last but not least is the ending. Wodehouse never sought closure for Jeeves and Wooster. Each story left each of them unchanged and unmarked by the passage of time and events. Faulks has not done that here and I'm not at all sure he took the right approach.

All in all I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the story even with the above-noted downsides. It was an enjoyable story even if it wasn't just quite the same as the original. How could it be? The book has moments when it comes close and I think that makes it worth reading.

Laughing out loud in pleasure and surprise at the deftness of Faulks’s clever storyline
By GraphicNovelReporter.com
Any reservations I may have had about Sebastian Faulks doing justice to P.G. Wodehouse were canceled on page one. Bertie Wooster’s alarm clock shrieks him into wakefulness, he curses and shoves the wretched thing beneath his mattress, and regrets having too little of “nature’s sweet restorer,” as Jeeves calls it. Bertie is in a pickle because he is trying to help a friend and must turn to Jeeves for advice. Faulks has caught him: Bertie is back.

Bertie explains the complex plot that has put Jeeves into the drawing room of Melbury Hall and the driver side of the Wooster two-seater, while he remains below as the manservant and the passenger. He will steal the well-thumbed volumes of peerage and baronetage (to protect Jeeves’s impersonation of Lord Etringham), and bring in ringers for a vital cricket match. All the while, he little knows “what the lead-filled sock of fate” has in store for him. It is an excellent Wodehousean beginning.

Faulks has kept the Wooster outrage intact. When Jeeves suggests that members of the serving class wear a pair of side-whiskers, Bertie takes umbrage. Sort of. “There are times to take offence, but this was not one of them. I left my high horse unmounted --- though tethered pretty close.” He continues with his plan.

And Bertie’s perfect assessment of his formidable aunts and other large matrons of society remains intact. “If you were a Sumerian tablet beneath Dame Judith’s scrutiny, one imagined, you would give up your secrets pretty quick, cuneiform or not.” His Aunt Agatha does not appear in JEEVES AND THE WEDDING BELLS, but her impending visit is an impetus for Bertie and Jeeves to leave for the country.

Always important for a reader’s quiet delight, Bertie’s references to the classics remain in this homage. Under the influence of “the liquid contents of Sir Henry’s ottoman” or, more precisely, the cognac, at the end of the final day of masquerading as Jeeves’s manservant, Bertie must gain entrance to Melbury Hall. His thoughts run to Macbeth about the “odds on the raveled sleeve of care being knitted up to any appreciable extent,” but it does not matter who is awake or asleep. His ill-conceived appearance at the wrong window frightens the household.

Later, Jeeves is revealed as “the willing Pandarus” while Bertie makes sense of the adventure. Even though Jeeves must annotate the references, Bertie is more literate than he knows. Jeeves is still the master of deduction, understatement and advance planning. Almost before it happened, he knew “there was only one candidate for the role of rooftop intruder wrapped in a builder’s dust sheet.”

Most importantly, Bertie’s inherent sweetness and gallantry are left intact. Almost unbeknownst to himself (but not the ever-hopeful reader), he has fallen in love with a girl who loves him in return. It would seem that nothing could be simpler, but there is no simple in Bertie’s world. Faulks brings a heart-beating passion threatening to “burst the buttons” from his shirt, which had eluded him throughout the Wodehouse novels.

Bertie’s genuine affection for Jeeves is also still evident as he asks why Jeeves has helped him along the circuitous path to true love. But he already knows why. “It occurred to me at that moment that the answer was obvious…. I had begun to feel a slight pressure behind the eyes and an odd thickening of the throat.” The British aristocracy that Wodehouse knew and detailed so brilliantly is gone, but the line of position is blurred completely as Bertie articulates the warmth of his and Jeeves’s friendship.

The title JEEVES AND THE WEDDING BELLS hints at the finale, but we still blunder along with Bertie, laughing out loud in pleasure and surprise at the deftness of Faulks’s clever storyline and the faithfulness to Wodehouse’s best-known characters.

Good show.

The return of the classic duo
By Michael Birman
I've read every Jeeves and Wooster novel and short story as well as all of the Blandings novels. To say that I'm a fan of both series and their creator P.G. Wodehouse is an understatement. When I heard that author Sebastian Faulks had written a new Jeeves and Wooster novel I was both thrilled and concerned. Wodehouse was a comic genius, the finest writer of comic novels the world has yet seen. To emulate his style is to attempt to write a perfect souffle: something that is lighter than air and containing astonishing grace and wit. I thought that it would be impossible to capture the essence of the Wodehouse perfection and so I was concerned. But to have another Jeeves and Wooster novel is tempting so I applauded the effort. Jeeves and the Wedding Bells manages to capture something of the Wodehouse style but not its essential wit and grace. Faulks is an excellent writer but he is not a comic genius. He reproduces a semblance of the smart Jeeves and Wooster dialog as well as some stylistic similarities that lovers of Wodehouse will recognize. Ultimately, however, Faulks creates a palimpsest of Bertie and Jeeves and fails to reproduce that timeless lighter-than-air grace that Wodehouse seemed to create so effortlessly. You can enjoy Jeeves and the Wedding Bells as a novel that is a great deal of fun to read but true Wodehouse aficionados will quickly miss the touch of the master.
