Gluten free bread recipes that work!
By AskAlthea
After struggling for months with the Gluten Free Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day book (see our review there), we decided to give this book a try. We're so glad that we did! While the GFABin5 book has an interesting system that we hope to eventually master, we were tired of the crumb turning out so dense that our bread could be used as a door stop.

We truly appreciate this author's explanations of the chemistry of how protein, starches, carbohydrates and yeast all work together to make bread. It's critical information for people who want to understand why they're doing things and, then want to branch out and improvise.

We like that these bread recipes work the first time without asking us, the hapless bakers, to accept dense gooey crumb and paper weights. We like very much that the recipes cater to a wide range of tastes with breads that include hamburger buns, artisan boules, slicing loaves, brioche, baguettes and more.

We really are grateful for the muffin top hamburger buns; everyone is thrilled to eat these without even realizing that they're gluten free. We make ours with 4" silicone rings so that they fit our monster burgers.

We especially appreciate the recipe to make a sourdough 'mother'. That's a major wow; too bad ours isn't 200 years old like some in France and San Francisco, but it's a very cool thing to learn. Oh, and the sourdough bread from this book tastes divine along with virtually every bread recipe in the book (yah, we've made about everything at least once).

Because we're now armed with useful information (thank you, Ellen Brown), we've been improvising with great success. We like the taste of molasses and proof our yeast this way (the yeast love the molasses!). We like most of the flour recipes from GFABin5 with 'adjustments' to the dough's ingredients by adding oil and apple cider vinegar (Bob's Red Mill packaged GF bread recipe/trick) to really fluff up the dough before baking.

All in all, we recommend that GF bread newbies start with this book. Once you've had success baking GF bread, you might want to tackle GFABin5. Happy bread making!

Amazing!
By Parul Gupta
I own a few gluten free bread recipe books, and this one tops them all. My husband and I can't believe that the bread from these recipes are gluten free. The best part is that Ms. Brown uses nutritious flours so its healthy too. She provides very important details about exact measurements and temperature. At first glance I thought that it looked complicated, but after trying it I realized that its really not and that those steps lead to a highly successful and delicious gluten free bread. Every gluten free bread lover should have a copy of this book.

No dramatist has ever seen with more frightening clarity into the heart and mind of a murderer than has Shakespeare in this compelling tragedy of evil. Taunted into asserting his “masculinity” by his ambitious wife, Macbeth chooses to embrace the Weird Sisters’ prophecy and kill his king–and thus, seals his own doom. Fast-moving and bloody, this drama has the extraordinary energy that derives from a brilliant plot replete with treachery and murder, and from Shakespeare’s compelling portrait of the ultimate battle between a mind and its own guilt.

The Kindle version removes the line numbers and is poorly formatted. It's basically useless for any academic use. This is especially disappointing since the print version's preview looks very well formatted while the Kindle preview does not show the actual text of the play.

Promise of Shadows, by Justina Ireland

“A healthy dose of action, a strong thread of humor and just a touch of romance” (VOYA, starred review).

A teen who is half-god, half-human must own her power whether she likes it or not in this snappy, snarky novel with a serving of smoldering romance that Kirkus Reviews calls “a dark, slyly funny read.”

Zephyr Mourning has never been very good at being a Harpy. She’d rather watch reality TV than learn forty-seven ways to kill a man, and she pretty much sucks at wielding magic. Zephyr was ready for a future pretending to be a normal human instead of a half-god assassin. But all that changed when her sister was murdered—and Zephyr used a forbidden dark power to save herself from the same fate.

On the run from a punishment worse than death, an unexpected reunion with a childhood friend upends Zephyr’s world—and not only because her old friend has grown surprisingly, extremely hot. It seems that Zephyr might just be the Nyx, a dark goddess that is prophesied to shift the power balance: for hundreds of years the half-gods have lived in fear, and Zephyr is supposed to change that.

But how is she supposed to save everyone else when she can barely take care of herself?

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—After murdering her sister's killer, Zephyr Mourning lands herself in Tartarus—a section of Hell—serving an eternal sentence. Feces rains from the sky and the Centaurs on guard have a tendency to kill unruly prisoners, but Zephyr has a few things going for her: she's a Harpy, which is a half-human, half-god warrior vættir, and she only recently discovered she can unwittingly control and use dark magic. The teen used this forbidden power to avenge her sister Whisper's death, and it is this same ability which identified Zephyr as the much-revered and prophesied Nyx. Legend has it that the Nyx will protect and save all vættir from the Æthereals—gods who subject the vættir and other lesser mythical creatures to indiscriminate terror. With the help of her handsome childhood friend Tallon and his brother, Zephyr escapes Tartarus, along with fellow inmate Cass. This motley crew goes on a quest to discover if the reluctantly heroicized Zephyr really is the Nyx, and how she can stop the megalomaniac goddess Hera from wreaking havoc on the mortal and immortal realms. Though Ireland relies on preexisting knowledge of Greek mythology and doesn't spend enough time explaining complicated terminology, the fast pacing and dynamic plot will engage readers. An underdeveloped romance between Tallon and Zephyr is just enough to tantalize them. The snappy, hilarious dialogue between the protagonist and her friends balances the ominous apocalyptic story line, which will also attract fans of "The Hunger Games" (Scholastic), "Divergent" (HarperCollins), and underdog heroines.—Amy M. Laughlin, Darien Library, CT

Ireland, Justina. Promise of Shadows. Simon & Schuster, 2014. 384p. $17.99. 978-1-442-44464-5.

As Promise of Shadows opens, Zephyr is in hell. Literally. She is a “godslayer” who has been sent to the underworld as punishment for killing an Aethereal. When she and her friend escape to the mortal realm, she learns that she might be the Nix, a hero sent to protect humanity and the vaettir (not quite humans, not quite gods) from enslavement or annihilation.

Ireland does a wonderful job of creating characters described in myths and bringing them to our world. Zephyr is a harpy, trained for destruction, but she is also a teenage girl who is mortified by her awkwardness when she is around the boy—okay, vaettir—upon whom she is crushing. While the sense of place is strong from the very beginning, it might take a while for readers not familiar with mythology to sort out the settings. The juxtaposition of the Underworld and the Elysian Fields with “the mortal realm” of modern-day Virginia is captivating. Ireland also does a masterful job with throwaway comments that reveal the diversity in her characters with regard to race, sexuality, and of course, immortality without being heavy handed. There is some graphic violence in the book, but it is in no way gratuitous, and the circumstances of Zephyr’s “powers” show more depth than you might expect from a book that also contains a healthy dose of action, a strong thread of humor, and just a touch of romance.—Barb Fecteau. (VOYA, STARRED REVIEW)

As in Ireland’s first novel, Vengeance Bound, her sophomore offering brings creatures from Greek mythology into the modern world. After failing her Harpy trials, Zephyr Mourning was looking forward to a low-key life in the Mortal Realm. Unfortunately, she accidentally killed a god, which landed her in Tartarus with an emotionless but oddly protective girl named Cass. The book moves along at a brisk clip once Zephyr’s childhood friend Tallon frees her and Cass from Tartarus, sweeping Zephyr toward confrontations with both the goddess Hera and her own reluctant destiny. Ireland’s foreshadowing is sometimes so heavy that the information feels stale by the time Zephyr realizes it, as when the truth of her parentage comes to light, but that’s a minor quibble in an otherwise solid book. Zephyr’s emotions, whether rage at a seer who holds back the whole truth or squirmy adolescent insecurity when she starts falling for Tallon, feel all the more real for her tendency to overreact, and the mythos Ireland creates strikes the right mix of familiarity and invention, and is well worth exploring. Ages 14–up. Agent: Elana Roth, Red Tree Literary. (Mar.) (Publishers Weekly)

A reluctant Harpy discovers her destiny in an elaborate Greek-mythology–based fantasy.

As the book opens, readers learn that Zephyr’s sister, Whisper, was killed for her forbidden romance with Hermes; Harpies are vættir—partly human, therefore lesser—and are not permitted to intimately fraternize with full gods, called Æthereals. In retaliation, Zephyr killed Whisper’s Æthereal executioner—a supposedly impossible act—and has been sentenced to eternity in the worst part of the Underworld, Tartarus (where the weather is crappy—literally). Zephyr’s forbidden, dark power enabled the kill and, she learns, marks her as the prophesied Nyx, a champion of “shadow vættir,” who maintains balance and protects vættir from Æthereal tyranny. Knowing the Æthereals will surely kill her soon, Zephyr escapes Tartarus with the help of Cass, her enigmatic friend and protector (who everyone they meet says is a liar and betrayer), Tallon, an attractive childhood friend, and his brother, Blue. They form a ragtag team to keep her alive so she can thwart a terrible plot against the vættir. The romantic plot is the least successful element of this character-driven story. Far more compelling are Zephyr’s struggles to accept herself as a hero, considering she’s failed her Trials to become a Harpy warrior. The complicated worldbuilding piles on the jargon, but Zephyr’s narration hooks readers with snappy, hilarious one-liners.

A dark, slyly funny read. (Fantasy. 13 & up) (Kirkus Reviews)

Fun but a bit inconsistent and predictable
By Teresa
Part of me loved this story and was like five stars- five stars all the way BUT then another part of me was like OMG dumb no stars for you! I don’t normally rate books on my blog, but I think this falls somewhere in the three star range. It was fun, but some of it just did not sit well with me. I really liked the mythology aspect and honestly it’s very much a guilty pleasure kind of read.

Zephyr is our heroine and she is just so frustrating but kinda likable. It’s weird. She is just very inconsistent. One minute she is all “I am super powerful, I will kick your butt” and then the next she is like “nope, must be a mistake, I can’t be the girl in the prophecy”. I understand being hesitant to accept something so huge, but it was the back and forth that got me. Then with the love interest. Gahh. The amount of times she said something along the lines of “I’m not gonna think about him, I don’t have time for him, but too bad I can’t stop thinking about him” was just crazy. So much repetition. But at the same time I still liked her, like I said: weird.

The aforementioned love interest is Tallon. And again I liked him, but inconsistent. He was so hot and cold and not in the broody hot and cold way that makes him all swoony and mysterious. More in the way of why are you putting up with his nonsense. But I still liked him in a weird way, because it’s not like he is a bad guy.

So yeah, my biggest issue with the book was character inconsistencies. And it didn’t stay to the main characters, it was pretty much all of them, so that makes it hard. Also, it’s pretty predictable and I pegged a lot of the story. I know as a reader we are going to spot things better than others, but I think this took it too far past the predictable line, to the point where I spotted the big reveal at the end within the first couple of chapters.

With all of that though, it was still fun. I love Greek mythology so that might have helped and it did move at a very quick pace, so it kept me entertained. Like I’ve been saying, I like the story in a very weird way, which makes it hard to review. It was kinda nice to read something that didn’t put my brain into overdrive for a bit. So yeah to wrap it up: quick, fun, albeit inconsistent and predictable.

Summary (from Goodreads):

Zephyr Mourning has never been very good at being a Harpy. She'd rather watch reality TV than learn forty-seven ways to kill a man, and she pretty much sucks at wielding magic. Zephyr was ready for a future pretending to be a normal human instead of a half-god assassin. But all that changes when her sister is murdered--and she uses a forbidden dark power to save herself from the same fate.

Zephyr is on the run from a punishment worse than death when an unexpected reunion with a childhood friend (a surprisingly HOT friend) changes everything. Because it seems like Zephyr might just be the Nyx, a dark goddess made flesh that is prophesied to change the power balance. For hundreds of years the half-gods have lived in fear, and Zephyr is supposed to change that.

But how is she supposed to save everyone when she can't even save herself?

What I Liked:

I love Greek and Roman mythology, you all. Well actually, I love most types of mythology - including Norse and Egyptian and so on. But Greek mythology is definitely my favorite. So when I read the synopsis of this book months ago, I knew I had to read it. Yes, my rating shows that I did not enjoy this book as much as I had hoped I would. But I'm glad I gave this book a chance.

Zephyr was sent to Tartarus because she killed a minor Æthereal (god), which is basically impossible for the vættir (non-god, non-human race, like Zephyr, who is a Harpy). But the Æthereals - especially Hera - are suspicious, and want to know how she did it. No one knows about Zepyhr's dark powers - shadow vættir are not supposed to exist anymore. So Zephyr escapes from Tartarus with the help of some friends. Thus starts the race to defeat Hera and her army of Acolytes from stealing shades and shadow vættir.

I liked the use of mythology in this book - and Ireland's adaptation of mythology. The author definitely added her own interpretation to Greek mythology, which was cool. All of the stories and legends and mixed-up families was so like the original Greek mythological tales. I liked Ireland's spin on things.

The idea of this book was definitely a good one. I wanted to like the plot, because it sounded really interesting. I wanted to like the characters, because they sounded kick-butt. I wanted to and did like the use of Greek mythology in this book. But I found that I really did not like very much about this book, unfortunately.

What I Did Not Like:

The plot, the characters, the romance, the pacing, the mood, the execution, the inconsistencies. There were so many things that niggled at me while I was reading this book, and I should have written them down as I was reading. I did NOT finish this book in one sitting, which made me sad. It did not hold my interest at all.

So, the plot. The plot was so boring. This book was so boring. I mentioned that I did not finish this book in one sitting, that the book did not hold my interest. I literally FELL ASLEEP while reading this book - no joke. Granted, it was a Monday after my four classes, and it was the first day of classes after a four-day weekend, but STILL. This book was NOT exciting. I wasn't thoroughly invested. The plot was all about stopping Hera from stealing shades and destroying the shadow vættir.

Honestly, I still don't really understand the point. I don't really get why Hera was stealing shades and bent on destroying the shadow vættir. Actually, I think I understand the latter. But the former? Why? And why was that so catastrophic? Why didn't the gods (Æthereals) intervene directly, if it was an Æthereal behind everything, and they knew it? One Nyx is NOT stronger than one Æthereal. So that makes no sense.

I did not connect with a single character. And I didn't like any of them. They seemed flat and one-dimensional to me, and not the types to which I could relate. I can't stand flat characters, and I especially can't stand when I can't connect to characters on some level. Also, there were a ton of secondary characters, and I feel like none of them were really fleshed out.

The romance. Blah blah blah snooze. The romance was so boring. I could see the attempt at an angst-filled romance, but it was an ATTEMPT, and it so did not work. Instead, I was really hoping that either Zephyr or her love interest would die - or both. I seriously did not care at all if they did not end up together, or if one died, or whatever. So... the romance was pretty badly done.

I was not a fan of the pacing. Most of this book was sitting ducks, or whatever the phrase is. There are a ton of paragraphs and pages involving long explanations and stories and history. No thank you, let's get to some action. The action scenes were few and far apart, which was annoying, because the non-action scenes were really boring. So, the pacing wasn't the best. It was too slow.

The execution of this novel was (overall) pretty poor. The concept was really cool, and Ireland's spin on Greek mythology was fabulous, but the execution of the actual story was not so good. It's bad when your reader could care less about basically everything. And doesn't understand what's going on or why things are going on or so on.

I already mentioned a few inconsistencies (like with the gods not intervening), but the fact that I noticed more than a few at all is a red flag to me. For example, I also noticed something about Zephyr's hair. I thought at one point, when she incinerated everything, Nanda had to cut off all Zephyr's hair, really short. But then at the end of the book, Zephyr's curls were back. What? From that point of the hair-cutting to the end of the book, only a few weeks passed (like maybe three at the most). Hair does NOT grow that quickly, to that length anyway.

Anyway, those are the not-so-great things about this book (for me). Another thing - I really thought this book was a standalone. But the ending is a bit ambiguous. Well, I won't be reading future novels in this series (if it does end up being a series), so that's that.

Would I Recommend It:

Heh. Not really, no. I was so ecstatic to read a book involving Greek mythology, but it was such a disappointment. The negatives highly outweigh the positives. Heck, I had a hard time FINISHING this book, and STAYING AWAKE. Save your time and sanity and read something else!

Rating:

1.5 stars -> rounded up to 2 stars. I'm actually not sure why I'm giving this 2 stars as opposed to 1 star - probably because I really WANTED to like this book. Oh well.

Promise of Shadows
By Angie
Promise of Shadows was jam packed with interesting mythology! Zephyr is a harpy, but not a very good one. She can't hide her emotions, she gets scared, and now she's lost her wings because she's been sentenced to Tartarus for killing a god. If the other gods knew how she killed him, they'd put her to death. Instead of being able to use aether, Zephyr's magic is fueled by the shadows, erebos. No one can find out, or she's dead. She might wind up dead anyway, because of a Prophecy that names her as the savior of her kind.

I really liked the way the mythology worked in Promise of Shadows. There's a lot of it! The gods and their offspring are divided into two main groups: those who use aether and those who use erebos. Light and darkness have nothing to do with good or evil, but of course we know how those Greek gods loved to cause chaos and murder people. There's also dragons, Oracles, Fates, sirens, fae, drakans, cerebrus, and I don't even remember what else! They all had their own place in this world. Of course, Zephyr isn't just a harpy who can wield shadows. She's something much more, and I did find her father's identity to be super predictable.

Promise of Shadows also has an exciting plot. There's an escape from hell in the first few pages. Then Zephyr has to kick some butt on a few occasions. Then there's the big show down at the end where anything could happen! There is a giant info-dump in the middle though, which did slow things down quite a bit. It was interesting stuff, but it was literally just the characters sitting down and talking about world-building stuff. Not my favorite way to learn about what's going on.

In the end, I liked Promise of Shadows quite a bit. Other than that middle portion, it was fast paced and fun. I thought the romance was really cute and not over dramatic. Zephyr and Tallon had been friends as kids, and now that they've been reunited there's something more there. The ending is an open one. Zephyr is left with a choice, and I'd like to imagine that she stayed. Which is probably not what the majority will think, but I like those kind of unexpected endings.

Spartacus (Polyg9on Lewis Grassic Gibbon), by Lewis Grassic Gibbon

The uprising of the slaves against the Romans in 73 BC, led by the gladiator Spartacus, has been an inspiration to generations of people who have stood up against oppression. By the time he was captured by Marcus Licinius Crassus in 71 BC and executed by crucifixion, his army of around 90 000 slaves and dispossessed had defeated several Roman armies and devastated much of the southern part of the Italian peninsula. For Karl Marx, Spartacus was 'the most splendid fellow that all ancient history has to show; great general, noble character, real representative of the ancient proletariat'. For Grassic Gibbon, a lifelong Marxist International and successful historian of early civilisations, Spartacus allowed him to focus on his fiercely held beliefs in the nature of society, the freedom of the individual, and the inevitable collapse of 'civilisation'.

Review
“Spartacus is told with Gibbon’s characteristic verve and economy. As everywhere in Gibbon’s work, the reader is drawn without preamble into the fully active plot. On balance, the style works triumphantly. Narrow, brutal, shaped by forces beyond its control, continuously threatened by sudden death or agonizing retribution by a ruthless army of Masters, the slave experience forming the totality of this narrative is caught with unpleasant but accurate forces. It was a desperate time—and Gibbon realistically recreates that desperation.” —Ian Campbell, from the Introduction

Immensely rich
By ilmk
Lewis Grassic Gibbon (or James Leslie Mitchell) has written a novel of Spartacus that is as refreshing as it is clearly one of the forerunners of historical fiction. Opening through the eyes of the eunuch Kleon and his mission to find the heroic leader of the Slaves the novel centers more around Spartacus 'inner circle' and his relationship with Elpinice. Book I is told through Kleon and deals with the period up to the defeat after the Battle of the Lake. Books II and III with Spatracus' victories until we move towards the well-known and inexorable end on the Appian way at the hands of Marcus Licinius Crassus at the end of Book VI. The novel ends as it begins, with Kleon, and his crucifixion
The novel is well written, well-paced and pauses sufficiently to voice greater philospohical views than historical novels of the current generation. It is easy to see why this has been heralded as one of the great novels of its genre.

A flawed novel of striking narrative style
By Anson Cassel Mills
The strength of this novel is its strong prose style, a style that Ian Campbell has correctly described as "flexible and arresting." (xxvi) The novel's weakness is its limited characterization. For all its fine evocative passages, the characters are flat and fail to develop. Perhaps we can excuse former slaves for being emotionally stunted, but the reader may soon cease to care whether such people live or die.

And die they all do. This is a novel littered with corpses. Even though Mitchell, writing in the 1930s, could not have anticipated the sort of blood lust in which twenty-first-century Hollywood wallows, his numerous unpleasant deaths, coolly observed, are still multiple deaths from which the humanity has been drained.

Finally, mention should be made of what Campbell calls Mitchell's "occasionally injudicious reliance on one effect." (xxix) Some characters have a leitmotif that follows them insistently (and sometimes irritatingly) through the story. The author also has a fascination with Latin, Greek, and obscure English words. Although the reader can usually deduce what the unknown word must mean, occasionally Mitchell goes overboard, as when he writes that "beyond the horreum itself, through a fence of osiers, the steadings of a farm loomed." This novel is an amazing masterpiece of prose. I cannot praise this book enough! The opening scene is one of the most memorable and epic works of writing I have ever read.

Clementine Classics: Sister Carrie

Sometimes reading the classics is a chore, but not so with the snarky annotations by Clementine the Hedgehog. Having made her debut as a weekly book reviewer of note on Tumblr in 2012, Clem now takes on Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser. On each page, she inserts her keen insights, dark sense of humor, and cut-the-crap commentary, crafting a 21st-century literary criticism for distraction addicts everywhere.

“This is obviously my favorite review to date, as it was WRITTEN BY A HEDGEHOG, and COMES WITH A HEDGEHOG GIF.”—Emma Straub

“Tumblr book review series of the year.”—Rachel Fershleiser, head of Tumblr literary outreach

Clementine Classics, a new series from Black Balloon Publishing, gives classic works of literature the contemporary annotations they deserve. Obsessed, possessed, and thoroughly distressed by the originals, today's writers riff, rant, praise, and flay these old books, giving them new life. The series’ beautifully designed e-books are both an act of sincere literary criticism and a new, composite form of humor writing.

Throwing Mud at a Classic
By Lesmok
Theodore Dreiser was a fine writer and "Sister Carrie" was his masterpiece. This novel was one of the first, if not the first, to deal with the subject of psychological depression, and is a pioneering work of American realism.
That being said, Dreiser deserves better than the inane, babbling, obscene "annotations" which have been inseerted at random into his text.

“The Nate series by Tim Federle is a wonderful evocation of what it’s like to be a theater kid. Highly recommended.” –Lin-Manuel Miranda, star and creator of the musical, Hamilton

Winner of the Lambda Literary Award

Encore! Nate Foster’s Broadway dreams are finally coming true in this sequel to Better Nate Than Ever that Publishers Weekly calls a “funny, tender coming-of-age story.”

Armed with a one-way ticket to New York City, small-town theater geek Nate is off to start rehearsals for E.T.: The Broadway Musical. It’s everything he ever practiced his autograph for! But as thrilling as Broadway is, rehearsals are nothing like Nate expects: full of intimidating child stars, cut-throat understudies, and a director who can’t even remember Nate’s name.

Now, as the countdown to opening night is starting to feel more like a time bomb, Nate is going to need more than his lucky rabbit’s foot if he ever wants to see his name in lights. He may even need a showbiz miracle.

The companion novel to Better Nate Than Ever, which The New York Times called “inspired and inspiring,” Five, Six, Seven, Nate! is full of secret admirers, surprise reunions, and twice the drama of middle school...with a lot more glitter.

Amazon.com Review
Tim Federle on the Story Behind the Story: Better Nate Than Ever

Contrary to the very popular opinion of my more prominent childhood bullies: Broadway is not for sissies.

Growing up in Pittsburgh, I was the only kid who’d cut class to read Stephen Sondheim’s unauthorized biography in the library stacks. I was a black sheep, sure, but also a lost one—and I found myself when I found theater. “It gets better” wasn’t part of the lexicon when I was in school, but I somehow knew that it would get better—if only I could get to New York City.

And I got there, arriving a hopelessly hopeful teen, trading college for a shot at the big time. After ten years and five Broadway shows (plus a stint as a Christina Aguilera backup dancer), “it” had definitely gotten better, but it had also gotten . . . familiar. I was in a creative rut.

At age thirty, I landed a job as an associate choreographer on Billy Elliot. The show starred several young boys who alternated in the title role, and they’d grow up quickly from high-pitched Billys to lower-pitched Williams. Thus, the dance team would constantly scour the country, searching for Billy replacements. After a while, these cattle calls would become a blur of shiny showbiz kids.

But then, one day, Billy hopeful #8,420 appeared. The kid who changed my life.

This kid was pudgy, freckled, straight out of a fifties comic strip. When it was time for #8,420 to sing, he stood there with one arm wrenched behind his back. We were accustomed to all kinds of nervous behavior, but this boy was especially quirky. He wasn’t polished or slick. He finished his short song, thanked us, and turned to leave.

That’s when I saw it: the rabbit’s foot.

He was gripping it so tightly, he’d probably rubbed the green dye right into his sweaty palm. And in that strange moment—knowing he’d never be cast in Billy Elliot but that he was the most memorable kid I’d seen in ages—I found my new dream. I wanted to write a story about kids like him, for kids like him.

In the four weeks it took me to write the first draft of Better Nate Than Ever, I became that daydreaming mini-Tim again. I’d wake up at seven every morning, type till my fingers ached the way a dancer’s legs might, then dash to yet another ten-hour rehearsal. I didn’t eat, I didn’t pay bills. It was magic. Rehearsals suddenly crackled with possible plotlines—watching these kids gave me all the inspiration an author could want. And in the process of writing about their dreams, I rewrote my own. Telling stories in a bigger way than I ever could as a dancer.

There was never any doubt that I wanted this book to be for middle schoolers. Because? They’re not jaded. Because they’re still earnest enough to walk into an audition with a rabbit’s foot. And because it’s important to be told, when you need to hear it most, that the thing that might get you picked on in one town might get you paid in another. Imagine!

Better Nate Than Ever and its sequel Five, Six, Seven, Nate! were written for anyone who knows that the fastest way to star in your own life story is to dream big. No matter how small you are. (Lucky rabbit’s foot not required.)

From School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—In this encore to Better Nate Than Ever (S & S, 2013), small-town theater geek Nate Foster finds himself in New York City after landing an understudy part in E.T.: The Musical. Everything he's ever studied, including practicing his own autograph, has prepared him for this. From hiding from bullies in the boys' bathroom in the first book, Nate has moved on to more grown-up problems-his voice decides to change during his solo tryout and he's dealing with secret admirers. He backs up all of his emotions and each action with a musical soliloquy, quoting from plays, scripts, and Tony-winning shows. But everything is not all glitz and mirrored disco balls, as he soon learns. Conversations with Libby, his best friend back home, keep him grounded. Everyone could use a little more glitter in their lives, and Nate shares his with those who are willing to celebrate that being an understudy can one day earn you top billing.—Cheryl Ashton, Amherst Public Library, OH

From Booklist
In his Better Nate Than Ever (2013) premiere, eighth-grader Nate Foster beat the odds to land a small part in ET: The Musical. Now, act 2 of his adventures begins as he prepares to leave Nowheresville, PA, behind for Broadway. As an understudy without much experience outside of his own dreams, Nate is self-conscious and insecure about life on the Great White Way, especially since the star of the show is one of the richest, most talented, and best looking guys from his same small town. But he’s also determined, and with the support of his best friend, who is just a text message away, and his aunt, who is the only one in his family who understands him, Nate presses on through the comedy, drama, and romance of five weeks of rehearsals—right to the tragedy and triumph of opening night. Readers will cheer Nate along while also relating to him because, as Nate sagely observes, Broadway is just “like a junior high school cafeteria but with more glitter.” Grades 5-8. --Andrew Medlar

Deserves many, many standing ovations!
By Aeicha @ Word Spelunking
Last year, author Tim Federle exploded onto the middle-grade stage with his debut, Better Nate Than Ever...a book I lovelovelove...well, Federle is back with his debut’s sequel- Five, Six, Seven, Nate- and Federle has once again charmed, entertained, moved, and awed me with his stellar, sparkling storytelling! Broadway musical loving Nate Foster’s wildest dreams are coming true as he heads to NYC to begin rehearsals for E.T.: The Musical! But, Nate soon finds that his wildest dreams may not be exactly how he imagined them to be as he must deal with pushy co-stars, intimidating superiors, his own self-doubt, and the confusing world of first crushes and first kisses.

I’m SO in love with Federle’s pitch-perfect middle-grade voice and this achingly real, endlessly amusing world he has created. Everything I loved about Better Nate Than Ever (the laugh-out-loud humor, poignant honesty, superb characters, etc) is seamlessly carried over into this sequel. In Five, Six, Seven, Nate, we the readers and Nate are plopped into unfamiliar, yet exciting territory: the world of Broadway musical rehearsals. This is a fast-past, whirlwind kind of world and Federle brings his immense first hand experience to the story, creating a wonderfully authentic setting. Like Nate, I was dazzled and mesmerized by this larger than life world, but also intrigued by the many unexpected facets of it. This musical world isn’t all shining lights, shimmering costumes, and lovely voices though, and Federle holds nothing back when exploring the heavily competitive, sometimes deceptive side of this world.

Tim Federle so deftly and awesomely creates and explores this world, that it is impossible to walk away from Nate’s story NOT loving this magical musical world as much as him! But, what I love most about this sequel, and its predecessor, is, that at their core, they are about one special young boy’s coming of age and journey to find out just who he is. The refreshing honesty with which Federle writes, his perfectly delivered sharp wit, and his refusal to shy away from the complex, hard topics (extreme bullying, sexuality, alcoholism, etc), are what make his books stand out among other modern middle-grade books. And, of course, his fantabulous, unforgettable characters help too!

I’m not sure I can fully stress how much I loveadoreamcrazyabout Nate and his BFF, Libby! These characters are so well-written and given such fantastic real layers and just feel so genuine. They no longer feel like book characters, but like long lost friends and kindred spirits. Awkwardly charming, always endearing, and truly unique Nate is such a relatable young character, but also one that is worthy of looking up to. His courage, compassion, and refusal to be untrue to himself are admirable, while his unexpected humorous observations, honest perspective, and contagious excitement at the world, make him amusing and utterly impossible to love. And my girl, Libby?! Oh I love and want to be this spectacular girl! You couldn’t ask for a funnier, stronger, truer friend than this lovely girl. Nate and Libby’s friendship is one of the best written and most genuine and entertaining that I’ve come across in a long time. I really enjoyed the way this friendship organically grew and evolved in Five, Six, Seven, Nate.

There’s so much about the end of this book that gave me the warmest of warm fuzzies and put the biggest smile on my face for hours!

MY FINAL THOUGHTS: I loved Better Nate Than Ever SO much that I was worried the sequel wouldn’t be able to live up to it, but it SO does! With its excellent characters, marvelous storytelling, and big heart, Five, Six, Seven, Nate is simply superb and deserves many standing ovations!

Nate is Great
By JS
I loved Better Nate Than Ever, and was so excited to read Five, Six, Seven, Nate! This sequel delivers in a big way. By turns hilarious and touching, you follow Nate's journey as he starts rehearsals for his first Broadway show. But the road to success on the stage, like the road to finding yourself, is full of potholes. Nate makes his way through the highs and lows with a cast of unforgettable characters. You can't help loving this kid--determined, creative,self-effacing, eager, and kind to others even when it's against his self-interest. My whole family adores Nate, and we love this second book as much if not more than the first.

From the Back Cover
Since the end of the 20th century, we have been hearing from those who believe that God has restored the office of apostle in the church. Many have embraced this 'Apostolic Reformation' and changed their church government accordingly. Others have felt that their ministry is that of an 'apostle' and have looked for ways to make this a reality. Jaime Mazurek, with objectivity and strength, examines this movement by looking at it from three perspectives: history, hermeneutics, and theology. The reader will discover that there is much more to Apostolic Restoration than they imagined.

Un Análisis Excelente
By Gary Wornica

This book presents in concise yet profound terms the modern phenomena of the Apostolic Reformation movement. The author not only clarifies the fundamental affirmations of this movement but also examines its validity through an extensive historical, hermeneutical and theological analysis. It helped me understand that this teaching is based primarily upon a series of beliefs that are in reality myths and not biblical truths. I recommend it highly.
