'DON'T FEAR THE END OF THE WORLD. FEAR WHAT COMES NEXT."
By David Keymer
“You know what they said when the bombs fell? . . . Don’t fear the end of the world. Fear what comes next.”
The earth is a mess in the late 24th century. It’s a grim world. Two and a half centuries after ruinous wars, large stretches of the world are still too radioactive to travel through. Cities –where they weren’t utterly destroyed in the nuclear wars— host an elite class who isolate themselves in bunkers (they live in luxury but they’re still living in bunkers), walled off from an impoverished and unhealthy proletariat, whom they manipulate cynically. Then there are the Strykers. They’re mutants –psions, they’re called—who emerged from the wars with special powers –telekinetics and microtelekinetics (who can manipulate the base structure of a living entity), teleports and mindreaders, an insane empath who sucks the personality out of the less fortunate whose minds she latches onto. There’s a hitch to possessing so much power. Psions die young –thirty is the average and pre-cogs don’t make it to their teens. Their bodies and minds burn out under the toll of using their exceptional powers.
The wealthy few who possess ‘clean’ gene lines distrust and fear the psions but they control them: surgical implants in the psions’ bodies mean their owners always know where the psions are; if displeased, they can punish and kill them by pushing a switch. For all their talents, the Strykers are slaves.
Until now. Something is happening but for a long time it’s not clear what. There’s a super-psion family, masquerading as human. Its patriarch, Nathan, is fifty years old. (Fifty-one? I can’t find the reference.) He has avoided early death by the simple expedient of not using his powers unless absolutely necessary: he uses his children’s instead –let them grow old, not him—and he’s so powerful that they dare not disobey him on pain of death. One son, his heir Lucas, does disobey. He flees into hiding. This novel is the story of his fight against his father and of the Strykers he co-opts to help him.
Strykers is a novel of action first, mood second, and character development a distant third –kind of a words-instead-of-drawings comic book. It’s so accomplished I can hardly wait for Ruiz’s second book. If it’s as good as this one, sci fi’s found a new winner.

Did not realize this was an omnibus
By Casey Hansen
I really enjoyed mind storm and terminal point and I had thought that this would be a new book in the series, the description lead me to believe this was a new novel when in fact it is just a collection of the first two books, even the book itself does not allude to the fact that it is an omnibus, disappointed as I was hoping for a new story.
