His essays and articles have appeared in National Geographic, National Geographic Adventure, and The Atlantic Monthly, among other publications. He lives in Watertown, Massachusetts.

great book about an important climb

The book Annapurna by Maurice Herzog is perhaps the most read mountaineering book ever. I've never talked to any serious mountaineer who hasn't read it, and it's inspired many to start climbing. Annapurna was the first 8,000 meter peak climbed, in 1950, after France's humiliating defeat in WW2. Herzog became Minister of Sport in France and a mover and shaker in that country.
At the same time, Gaston Rebuffat became a mountain guide in Chamonix and a famous alpinist ( see Starlight and Storm) but, curiously, never climbed in the Great Ranges again (OK, one measly trip to the Andes). Most curious, that France's most famous alpinist, and certainly one of the world's best, never got to climb outside his own country again. Why?
David Roberts fascinating book explains why. Read Annapurna by Herzog first, then this. You'll get a fascinating insight into the politics, petty hatreds, ambitions and, should I say it….yes the conspiracies that drive alpinism and mountaineering.

Thoughtful and illuminating

This was very interesting reading and the author's search to find the real events of the ascent meshes well with and complements the story itself -- the adventure story and detective story worked well together. One theme that emerges with intriguing subtlety is the effect the dominance of the "official story" has on the lives of those who lived a far more complex reality and their families and friends. Mountaineering stories seem to require some overarching theme, message, statement about the nature of life -- whether it's of the "human nature surpasses all obstacles" variety or the "Everest tourism destroys human feeling" variety. Roberts' account shows how much more complex the realities are, both in the ascent itself and in the characters, backgrounds, and future experiences of the men involved. Very thoughtful and balanced. One of the best things about this is how Roberts demonstrates that the same actual events can mean radically different things to the people who lived them. The final insights about why Lachenal followed Herzog to the summit are very moving, and leave you with a deeper understanding of human nature, the limits of understanding, the (unconscious) perpetuation of injustice, and the ways in which a satisfying, heroic story can obscure much more subtle forms of heroism.
