About the Author
Deborah Voigt is one of the world’s leading dramatic sopranos, internationally revered for her performances in the operas of Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. She has also portrayed some of the iconic heroines in Italian opera to great acclaim. An active recitalist and performer of Broadway standards and popular songs, Voigt appears regularly, as both performer and host, in the Metropolitan Opera’s The Met: Live in HD series. She is also co-creator of Voigt Lessons, a one-woman show she developed with award-winning playwright Terrence McNally and director Francesca Zambello.

I'm really glad I did--it's well-written

I bought this after seeing and hearing her performance in "Voigt Lessons" at the 92Y in Manhattan. She is absolutely electric on stage---her singing made me tingle.
I'm not a huge opera buff, but my sweetie is, and the show ignited an interest in her story, so I bought the book. I'm really glad I did--it's well-written, lively, upbeat, and unflinching. If I have one criticism it's that there isn't quite enough about the mechanics of singing opera. She tries sometimes too hard to come across as down to earth--while I appreciate the effort, one reason I bought the book was to learn more about opera singing, so I would have enjoyed more details about how it works.
But that's a minor quibble. If you're reading the reviews trying to decide if you want to buy the book, go for it. You won't be sorry. She's fun, lively, and inspiring. And check out the Youtube videos--the one on the "Little Black Dress" incident is laugh-out-loud funny (she mentions making the video in the book).

and a little sad, to read how a singer that I have ...

This book was a very quick read. It is not really going to enlighten you on the workings of the opera world but it is interesting, and a little sad, to read how a singer that I have loved for many years has had such a sad personal experience. It ends with hope. Mz Voigt has been an amazing singer. I hope she finds / maintains the joy in life that her singing has given to her public. Their are so few biographies about opera singers. I'm glad there is one of her.

Honest and heart-rending

I read Debbie's (you said it's okay to call you Debbie!) emotionally honest and heart-rending story with much interest not just because of the almost incredible content, but because she is an excellent writer. What a life! Soaring to the heights of opera diva one minute and hitting the bottom of addiction the next. So much fame, success, glory and what a price. I was impressed with Debbie's clarity of prose in telling her story and I hope life is good for her now. All the usual trite descriptions of good writing here apply: couldn't put it down, page-turner, etc. Go on this journey with the great Deborah Voigt. Amazing!
