Murder comes well-seasoned in this charming mystery featuring a smart and spunky new amateur sleuth, small-town Georgia spice shop owner Piper Prescott

Piper Prescott, a transplanted Yankee living in the South, has got her sass back. She might be down, but don't count her out. "Change of life?" she asks. Bring it on. Recently divorced, Piper decides to pursue a dream she's secretly harbored: owning her own business, Spice it Up!, a spice shop in her adopted hometown, Brandywine Creek, Georgia. But Piper's grand opening goes awry when the local chef who's agreed to do a cooking demo is found stabbed. Not only did Piper find the body, she handled the murder weapon and doesn't have a witness to her alibi, making the case look like a slam dunk to brand new police Chief Wyatt McBride. Desperate to uncover the truth—and prove her innocence—Piper enlists the help of her outspoken BFF Reba Mae Johnson to help track down the real culprit. The pair compile a lengthy list of suspects and work to eliminate them using their own creative brand of sleuthing techniques including stakeouts, breaking and entering, and one very unorthodox chocolate pie. When Piper narrowly avoids being a victim of a hit-and-run, she knows she's getting closer to the truth, but can she catch the killer and clear her name before she becomes the next victim?

A captivating start to a new series featuring an unstoppably fabulous new crime-solving heroine, a colorful cast of small town characters, and more than a pinch of Georgia charm, Rosemary and Crime by Gail Oust is sure to delight fans of cozy mysteries.

From Booklist
Piper Prescott took her divorce settlement and opened Spice It Up! in a Georgia small town, only to have the chef she hired for her opening-day cooking demonstration killed at the event. She found the body, touched the murder weapon, and was seen arguing with the temperamental chef the night before his death. Police Chief Wyatt McBride is dogging her every step, and the townspeople are avoiding her and her shop. An abandoned and injured dog is connected to the crime, but the dog proves a good watchdog later when Piper’s shop is broken into, and a car tries to run her down. Struggles with her teen daughter and problems trying to keep business going add dimension to the story of Piper’s sleuthing efforts. A strong cast of secondary characters add to the appeal. Fans of Jenn McKinlay and Ellery Adams will want to add this series to their reading lists. --Amy Alessio

Has potential, but needs improvement
By CJ-MO
Piper Prescott is recently divorced, but is starting to move on with her life. One major step she is taking is opening a new spice shop in Brandywine Creek, Georgia. Unfortunately, Piper's grand opening has all the wrong kind of excitement when the local chef Piper hired to do a cooking demonstration for the shop is murdered. As a relative newcomer in the town and a lead investigator that seems to have a grudge against her, Piper becomes the number one suspect. Now it’s up to her to clear her name to make sure a murderer doesn't go free and to get her life and her business back on track.

This new series has several interesting elements that are promising for a new cozy series. Piper is a relative newcomer to the South and is sometimes still looked upon as an outsider. Piper's ex-husband CJ, at his best comes across as a bumbling good old boy, but frequently acts like a blustering and irritating jerk. CJ has a new girlfriend, not much older than Piper and CJ's teenage daughter. That is an interesting dynamic that is somewhat unique for a cozy series. I also enjoy the scenes with Piper's best friend Reba Mae, who is loyal to Piper and fun to be around. There is also enough romance added to the mystery to keep things interesting for Piper and the reader.

Unfortunately the ongoing antics in this book between Piper and the inept police chief, along with the worst side of her ex repeatedly coming through, drag the story down. The result is a book with an interesting plot and setting, but doesn't live up to its potential. Since the book is about a spice shop, it would have benefited from some tips about using spices or at least recipes using a variety of spices. Although I have rated this book three stars, fans of Jessica Beck or Cindy Sample may want to give it a try.

I received this book from NetGalley, through the courtesy of Minotaur Books in exchange for an honest review.

Great New Series
By Amy Leemon
Mario Barrone was not well liked. Unfortunately, Piper Prescott was heard having a loud argument with him on the day he was murdered. To make it worse, she is found by his lifeless body, her fingerprints are on the murder weapon and her shirt is covered in blood. To the new police chief, Wyatt McBride, that is enough to make him very suspicious. As a result, Piper feels she has no choice but to find the killer herself.

With the help of her best friend, Reba Mae, they set off on a series of (mis)adventures that are a delight to read. Think Lucy and Ethel but a little saner. Their use of a chocolate pie is terrific.

The other characters are as much fun. The ex-husband who is a lawyer and wants to defend her so he can be on tv and become famous. I was particularly fond of her ex mother-in-law who "helps" her out at her spice shop. The quirky customers and a wonderful little dog named Casey.

I liked her relationship with her teenage daughter because in spite of difficult circumstances, they have a great love and respect for each other. Even her husband's new, younger girlfriend Amber (otherwise known as Miss Peach Pit) was a great addition to the book.

By the end of the book, the murder was solved and I'm already eager for the next in the series.

Humor, good characters and suspense make a good story.
By Rhonda
4 STARS

I like Piper Prescott. She is starting a business after her divorce. She is feisty. A good mom. Her best friend is Reba Mae Johnson. She is a character you want things to workout for her and you want to see what happens next in her life.

The plot is the day of her Spice it Up grand opening. She goes to the restraint where the chef works who is going to be doing a cooking demonstration and make sure everything is going as planned. She finds the door open and the chef is dead on the floor. Outside the restraint she finds a knife and picks it up and drops it by the body.

The new sheriff in town thinks she is the main suspect. Especially when her alibi turns up missing. Chief Wyatt McBride does not get along with Piper's ex-husband.

Piper and Reba are looking into who might have a motive to kill the chef. They try different stakeouts to find what people are doing but end up being caught by McBride.

Their is lots of humor, characters that I like, lot of suspects, motives and a small town feel to the story. There is suspense to the story you don't know till the end who the murder is and why.

The setting is modern day small southern city.

The pace of the story was good. It keeps your attention with every day life plus trying to figure out who the real killer is.

I would read another story about Piper Prescott in the future.
