Gr 9 Up—This second installment in Hurley's supernatural Catholic-themed trilogy finds three teens who have been reincarnated as saints grieving separately over the loss of their surprisingly shared beloved, Sebastian. There's Cecilia, the gritty musician; Lucy, the socialite; and Agnes, the good girl. The teens are dealing with the fame and notoriety of possibly being reincarnated martyred saints, when they learn that someone has stolen Sebastian's heart with the intent of making it a religious relic. Both the girls and their nemesis, psychiatrist Dr. Frey, want the heart. Hurley's premise is interesting. Unfortunately, the world-building and background information doesn't quite gel. New readers will feel like they've tuned into a movie halfway through and may struggle to be invested. While the protagonists are distinct and capable of being formidable heroines, the heavy-handed messages of self-worth, belief, and faith sadly come off as cliché. "Ciphers" like Frey, people in powerful positions bent on manipulating the populace, are indistinguishable mustache-twirling baddies. Dialogue can waffle between trite or melodramatic, with an occasional swear word used. The emotional weight of the conclusion's stand-off is overshadowed by cartoonish, Matrix-like moves and gore. Loose threads and characters still in danger pave the way for book three. Passionaries

The three girls are still lost about what they're supposed to do. And now, with Sebastian gone, they have no one to turn to but each other. It seems that no matter what happens things are going from bad to worse. Not knowing who to trust and the dangers that face them if they continue to venture deeper into what Sebastian meant about being saints, their true purpose in this life. Time is of the essence. Passionaries truly shines as it delivers a new meaning on what we really believe our true worth is on this earth. It certainly outdoes Precious Blood as it brings us one step closer to the nail biting ending.

Okay, but Not as Good as the First Book

I loved the first book in this series! Precious Blood was a fantastic read. However, Passionaries was a bit mediocre in my opinion.

I like the title, and I believe it is quite fitting for the book. A minor character in the book defines what passionaries are. They are some kind of books related to the Catholic religion. I don't know if that's fictitious or not (I did try searching for it and found nothing).

The cover is very gorgeous as are all of the covers of Tonya Hurley's books. The cover fits the book especially with the guitars and the sword.

The world building was a bit hit and miss. There were times when it seemed like something like this could happen. I mean, who says we can't have modern day saints? However, there were also times when it seemed a bit too unreal such as when people were getting murdered. For example, in one scene, the girls get attacked so they end up killing their attackers. They don't get arrested because there's no evidence. Surely they would've caught them on CCTV or someone would've seen the girls with blood all over them. Plus, there'd be so much forensic evidence. I also felt that sometimes there was sometimes some fight scenes just for the sake of having a fight scene.

The pacing started off slow but eventually find a decent pace. The pacing isn't as good as the first book in the series, but it still held my attention.

As for the plot, I don't really know what's going on. At least in the first book, it was the girls finding out they were saints. However, after reading this book, I don't know what's going on! I realize the girls are saints and there are some people that don't want the world to know that, but what I don't know is the why. Why do these people not want the world to know these girls are saints? I felt that the answer is just not very clear. Passionaries did have a plot twist that I never saw coming. There's also a big cliff hanger at the end of the story as to make way for the third book in the series.

The characters were all fabulously written. The girls are stronger in this book, and their saintly personalities show through. Saying that, Cecelia is more hardcore in this book then in the first one. At least I thought so. Dr. Frey is still very cunning as ever in Passionaries. One thing that did irk me was that Hurley brought in the character of Finn. To me, Finn is a totally pointless character. I really didn't see the relevance in bringing him into the story.

There were times when the dialogue did seem a bit awkward although this was mostly in the beginning of the book. I felt that the meeting between Dr. Frey and some of his associates at the beginning of the book had painful dialogue. It just didn't seem to flow naturally. Luckily, the problem is quickly solved. There is some swearing in Passionaries as well as graphic violence.

All in all, Passionaries fell short of my expectations. It was a little bit too confusing, and the world building just didn't seem all that realistic. I do want to read the next book in the series because I've invested so much time in this series. However, the expected publication is some time in 2015, so I may give it a miss since I tend to forget things that happened in books after so long.

I'd recommend this book to those aged 17+ who want to know more about Lucy, Cecelia, and Agnes.

Faith vs. Evil:Which will Prevail?

Following the Massacre at the Cathedral of Perpetual Help and Sebastian's death, Lucy, Agnes and Cecelia return to their lives as Sebastian had suggested. Now, however, they are Superstars and followed by throngs; some asking for their prayers and intervention; others denigrating their Faith.

The girls discover that Sebastian's heart is missing, and unbeknownst to them, Dr. Frey has it. Their pursuit is to find it. Dr. Frey and the World's Power Brokers want the girls and their message of Faith destroyed. Cardinal DeCarlo, Advisor to the Pope, visits Dr. Frey. The girls must be quickly lured to their destruction. The Pope, unaware of DeCarlo's duplicity, tells him that he is sending an investigator to test the girls' authenticity.

When one of the girls goes missing, the other two follow Dr. Frey and are able to locate her. They arrive just in time to find the Cardinal preparing to torture her. Not allowing the Cardinal the satisfaction of destroying her, our Saint, in a vivid and breathtaking way, and according to her Destiny, destroys herself. The Investigator arrives; DeCarlo is taken away, and the two saints, while mourning their friend, know they too, are moving towards their own destinies. Dr. Frey has once again escaped. He has been busy, intervening in the lives of Bill and Jesse. Will Dr. Frey escape in the final book of The Blessed Trilogy or will the World be saved from Evil? We look eagerly forward to finding out.

The Author's description of these very real time girls aka saints, and their thoughts about their true identities, and the exciting yet frightening ride to an inevitable end - or so it seems, continues to carry us along.

This book covers a broad range of financial instruments. Our firm is in the process of converting to OIS discounting. I found Lawrence Galitz's book to be very useful. This book provides guidance and insight into valuation techniques. A must have for any Risk Manager or anyone who is exposed to financial instruments.

The Truth About Forever

"How many layers does it take to keep something - an object, a person, a memory, a secret - held safe forever?"

The Last Forever by Deb Caletti is the story of a girl named Tess, and the people who have influenced her the most: her parents, each absent in a different way; her grandmother, who she hasn't seen since she was a toddler; and someone she never saw coming. The summer between Tessa's junior and senior years of high school is a summer filled with unexpected, unforgettable things.

Six months after her mother dies, Tessa's father decides that they should go on an impromptu road trip. Even though there's still a few weeks of school left, and even though Tess is nowhere near as impulsive as her somewhat irresponsible father, she agrees to the trip, thinking it'll be nice to blow off steam for a few days.

But what begins as a tourist-y jaunt from San Bernardino, California to the Grand Canyon continues on to Las Vegas, then to Portland, Oregon, where her dad grew up. Then her dad takes off without warning, leaving Tess stranded with a grandmother she barely knows.

Tess surprises herself by becoming comfortable not only with her artistic, lively grandma but also with her new surroundings. She falls in love with this little neighborhood where everyone knows everyone. Tess bonds very quickly with an boy her age named Henry Lark. Often found in the library, which is also one of Tess' favorite haunts, Henry is extremely smart and kind, and this friendship is a wonderful comfort to Tess.

Tess brought her most precious possession with her on this trip: the last pixiebell, a plant that her mother cared for, raised from a seed that her mother's father stole (!) while attending a party oh so many years ago. Caring for the plant gives Tess a connection to her mother, so when the pixiebell starts to wilt, Tess herself begins to crumble. With help from various townspeople (and no one is more helpful than Henry), they try to find a way to save the pixiebell - and, by extension, save Tess and her family.

The Last Forever by Deb Caletti is about finding your roots, and planting your own. It's about grief, and hope, and truth, and family. It's about the choices that are made for us, and the choices we make for ourselves. It's about celebrating what you have, honoring what you have, and knowing who you are.

Once again, Deb Caletti reminds us to embrace both the beauty and the pain in unexpected moments and in the most important parts of life. Whereas some books (and movies, and other types of stories) pile up coincidences for the sake of "high stakes" and/or happy endings, the revelations in The Last Forever are plausible, realistic, and that's why they resonate so deeply. The time we spend with Tess is time well spent.

I must admit --- when I first looked at the title and cover of Deb Caletti’s THE LAST FOREVER, I was expecting a story straight out of a Taylor Swift song. Boy, was I wrong. The story Caletti has crafted is a tapestry whose threads and images give volume and depth to an array of issues. THE LAST FOREVER incites hope, specifically regarding the belief in love and how it is always possible to fix something, no matter how broken it seems.

The book follows the story of 17-year-old Tess Sedgewick, an intensely relatable teenager who is still reeling from the death of her mother from cancer six months ago. Her father doesn’t seem to be faring much better, which is evident when he pulls Tess from school with only two weeks left until summer vacation to take her on a road trip from their home in California up the Northwest coast until they settle into the small coastal town of Parrish Island. There, Tess meets her estranged grandmother, Jenny, who is rough and distant at first, but time and talk reveal her to be a nurturing, supportive maternal figure who never assumes the role of mother and holds her own beautifully wizened identity, both as an individual and in relation to Tess. She meets other inhabitants of the town and instantly forms bonds with them, the strongest of all being with Henry Lark, her self-professed “first true love.”

But do not, I repeat, do not let those cliché-sounding words fool you. THE LAST FOREVER is anything but ordinary, no tropes or stereotypes to be found here. As Tess moves forward in her relationships on Parrish Island, she struggles with guilt, self-acceptance and understanding all that this life has to offer. As she grows closer to Henry, she discovers what real love is, and though there were times she may have dwelled on describing him in cutesy, swoony terms --- there’s a lot of emphasis on how perfect his lips are --- the reader comes to realize that this isn’t some overly-sugar romance language here. It’s real, it’s honest, and Tess owns up to every thought and feeling she has in a genuine but not overbearing way. Her passion for everything perfectly balances between control and zeal, creating a mixture of enthusiasm and the creeping doubt that lies behind everything we want to believe in and love.

There were many details that I found profound and delightful, like the author’s casual handling of a lesbian relationship, meaning that she didn’t “make a big deal” about it. It was great to see such cool, progressive confidence. Also, I welcomed the fact that the character Jenny had a non-dramatic/traumatic reason for being distanced from her family because it was realistic --- I know of many cases where people become separated because of small reasons, just simple incompatibility and arguing.

Caletti is a flourishing writer --- words rise effortlessly from the page exactly the way they need to be said and you want to hear. She hits just the right emotional pitch for each scene, and you never walk away from one feeling out of place or disconnected. There are many pleasant surprises throughout the story, both in reagrds to their content and execution. She handles her plot with precision and deliberate choices that pay off immensely. And the general through-line of botany and plants was refreshing (no nature pun intended), and while I didn’t always read the little plant encyclopedia entries at the beginning of each chapter (mostly because I was too engrossed in the story to stop), their presence was somehow soothing, and I was glad they were there. The ending is satisfying, and THE LAST FOREVER is the kind of book that you finish feeling a sense of calm purpose, a subtle seed (pun totally intended) embedded deep inside you that will start taking effect in the time to come.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to believe in everything that life has to give, because regardless of where the reader is in their life, they will end up feeling good by the end of this story. I’m very interested to see what else Deb Caletti has to offer, and I will most likely look in to the rest of her bibliography. THE LAST FOREVER is a story that both sings and whispers to the reader, and in both cases, it is music to the ears.

Yet Another Hit by Deb Caletti

Deb Caletti is an author that I’ve been reading for quite a few years now, and eagerly anticipate each and every release of hers. This book was no different. I was also determined to finish it quickly because she will be attending the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books this weekend and I am so excited to finally meet her! It’s going to be fantastic.

The thing that always impresses me about Deb Caletti’s books is that you would think after 9 YA books (and one adult books), things would start to get repetitive. Predictable. But that isn’t actually what happens. She surprises me every single time I read a book. I read the synopsis and wondered for a moment if I was going to be able to predict the ending or if I might get bored by it.

And I wasn’t at all. Deb Caletti has a way of telling such a familiar, deep story no matter what book it is. She’s such a beautiful writer. She has the ability to write an incredibly well written novel while also making it sound like we are in the mind of a typical teenager. We go through all the feelings that Tessa is going through, while Deb paints a beautiful picture of the story, and that’s what I love about this book. It somehow manages to keep those things that we come to know from capital-L literature and makes it a young adult story with that recognizable young adult voice.

What really got me about this book is that it seems like it would be a romance story, and while there is definitely a part of that, for me, it was a story about family, and the strange ways that you lose it and find it. The way a loss can change you and how to deal with that kind of loss. I seem to be reading a lot of books about loss and grief lately and it amazes me to see the similarities and differences in which a person deals with grief and I think that’s the beauty of it. Tessa is searching for her mother in something, and she holds her mother close in a little plant named Pix that her mother has left behind for her.

The story of Pix and the fight for the plant’s survival is a huge part of why I couldn’t stop reading. Tessa is obsessed with this plant, but its gaining her friends, its opening up a relationship with her grandmother, and its giving her purpose after the loss of her mother. She is able to find her mother in that plant and both hold onto the memories of her mother while also moving on into a new chapter of her life.

The relationship between Tessa and Henry in the book is unexpected and interesting to read about and I loved watching it from beginning to end, unsure of where it would end up. They both learn so much from each other, and its unlike most relationships that we see in a YA novel and I love that. I love seeing a unique take on romance, and friendship and family.

A dozen years since they first made an appearance, and not a day older or wiser, Fleming’s three young cottontails return to bedevil Mr. McGreely (Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!, 2002, etc.).

The bunnies still have a few tricks up their sleeves to get under Mr. McGreely’s skin. Where once they ate his garden to the ground, now they are doing their unintended best to undermine his vacation, one he has taken expressly to get away from the “floppyeared, pufftailed twitchwhiskers.” They manage to stow away in his car, then happily join him on his beach towel. Mr. McGreely storms off to do some shell collecting (“No bunny—nohow, noway—is sharing my fun day”). He returns with paltry fragments that he is very proud of, only to find that the bunnies have found a trove of spectacular shells. His kite flies for two seconds—again, he’s very proud—while the bunnies paraglide with their kite, and so on. In the end, there is a message about teamwork, which is not to be ignored, but it is Fleming’s text that raises the bar of joy to such heights, with her quirky internal rhymes—“Tippy-Tippy-Tippy, grab!…Tippy-nab”—and descriptive language. Karas invests each character with acres of personality.

It’s a happy reunion with the bunnies for children, if a dubious one for Mr. McGreely. (Picture book. 4-8) (Kirkus)

Love These Clever Bunnies

My Kindergarten students fell in love with these clever bunnies in Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! In this book they learned, along with Mr. Greely, a very important lesson about teamwork. I highly recommend buying all three books. It's a little pricey since they're hardcover but definitely worth it. You have to read them in order to really appreciate the character development. Begin with Muncha and end with Splash.

Once again these pesky, little bunnies create angst for poor Mr. McGreely !

They are back again making Mr. McGreely's outing to the beach a very memorable one. The bunnies have created problems for him at home so why would it be any different at the seashore? I won't describe all the ways the "pesky pufftails" drive Mr. McGreely up the wall but, trust me, they certainly do !

The day looks like it might end in total disaster but then something happens that allows this terrible trio to bond with the poor man they like to torment. Well "bond" might be too strong a word...but you'll see what happens.

There's plenty of good, sandy fun here and this is a picture book that children three or four years of age and older will get a kick out of. Adults might chuckle at some of the rabbits' antics too. This silly story will more than likely make a big splash in your household - it certainly did in ours - so why not give it a try?

About the Author

Christopher Isherwood (1904–1986) was born outside Manchester, England. He lived in

Berlin from 1929 to 1933 and emigrated from Europe to the United States in 1939. A major figure in twentieth-century fiction and the gay rights movement, he wrote more than twenty books, including A Single Man and Goodbye to Berlin.

mainstream or cult?

I wonder how much of this book covers similar ground to Isherwood’s book ‘My Guru And His Disciple ‘ but it’s so long ago that I read it that I am not sure. I became suspicious when Ollie mentioned his ‘Mahanta’ – the title of the leader of an American spiritual group (regarded by some as a cult) called Eckankar.

I am not sure why such a fuss is made of the brother becoming Brahmacharya. This is simply the first of four stages which any high-caste Hindu takes below the age of 25 and doesn’t automatically lead on to the other, more ascetic stages.

The Sanskrit title maharaja was originally used only for rulers who ruled a considerably large region with minor tributary rulers under them. Since the mediaeval times the title was used even by rulers of smaller states since they claimed to be the descendants of the ancient maharajas. In this book it is used of a chief monk – as it was when the Beatles went to India. The title seems to be used mainly for Hindus who spread their ideas outside India.

The shraddha ceremony seems to be limited to certain branches of Hinduism – the again, ‘Hinduism’ is a Western term and it doesn’t fit the huge variety of religious practices which it claims to label.

Yes, in an interview with the Paris review, he claims that “two monks from the Vedanta monastery here were coming out to India to take their final vows, sannyas, and I was in close contact with their feelings and the whole predicament of being about to take sannyas. For a long time I’d wanted to write a confrontation story where the representative of something meets the representative of something else, and quite suddenly it came to me that this was the way to do it. I talked a great deal with the monks afterward while I was writing it and checked up immensely on the details.”

Two people who know more about India and its vast array of religious practices, however, tell me that scepticism about the monastic details are unfounded. I admit that leaning about Hinduism in a white, Western university isn’t the whole story.

There are autobiographical bits: “Not long after I met Swami Prabhavananda, the war began, and I went to work with the Quakers at a hostel for refugees in Philadelphia, and after 1940 and Pearl Harbor I volunteered to join a Quaker ambulance corps going to China.”

Isherwood's Final Reckoning with Religion

Isherwood’s final novel, Meeting is both enjoyable and frustrating to read. The story of two brothers—told mostly in an epistolary fashion—holds one’s attention most of the time. The prose, as always, is seductive, leading a reader from one sentence to the next, one letter to the next. The author’s grasp of his material, that one of the brothers, Oliver, is planning to become a Hindu monk, is quite adequate—based on his own extensive study of and participation in the religion.

But the storytelling seems facile at times. The plot becomes a bit more complex when the other brother, Patrick, is married but is having an affair with a young man named Tom. Oliver finds out rather by accident and is unmoved by it, stating that from the standpoint of being Hindu, he doesn’t care. What is odd and a bit disconcerting is that none of the letters that Patrick or Oliver writes is ever answered directly. They both dutifully write their mother, and Patrick writes his wife. However, except for very rare indirect references to their responses, all of the information is outgoing—limiting the scope of the narrative, no doubt Isherwood’s intent. But why?

I located his thoughts concerning the novel from the second volume of his Diaries: “Yesterday I finished the first draft of A Meeting by the River; it has taken me exactly three months, to the day! I have just finished reading it through. There is something in it. But it seems quite boring in parts. Perhaps it needs cutting down to a long short story. It’s now 110 pages—let’s say a bit over 35,000 words” (367). I believe his instincts are headed in the wrong direction. He must add to it!

Isherwood also receives a response to a third draft from friend and writer, Edward Upward: “Obviously the reader isn’t meant to accept Patrick’s view that Oliver is becoming a monk in order to escape the ambitiousness which is natural to him but which he knows their mother wouldn’t approve of in him . . . . On the other hand the reader can’t quite believe that Oliver becomes a monk solely because the social work he’s been doing doesn’t seem ‘real’ enough to him” (400). Diaries.

I believe this observation is what makes the novel not as strong as it might be: one is never convinced of either character’s viability. One doesn’t learn enough about Oliver’s former social work to be able to compare it to what he might accomplish as a monk. One doesn’t quite believe that Patrick works in Hollywood, that he either loves his wife and children, or that he loves Tom, his paramour. And both characters, because of the similarities in their prose, might as well be two manifestations of the same character! Though Isherwood talks himself and his editor into publishing the book in this condition, there seems to be a lot missing. It, like A Single Man, is only about 50,000 words. If Isherwood could have added at least 30,000 words and developed both characters to their fullest, if he could have used the letter writing to its fullest capabilities, the reader might have become a bit more compelled to care about either brother and what happens to him.

Once I started reading Dear John, I didn't want to stop. Kim Vogel Sawyer is an amazingly gifted story teller. Her characters are compelling and captivating. One of the greatest things I walked away with after reading this story was a deep love, respect and understanding for those with Down syndrome. My heart went out to Marin, whose parents were killed on the way home from her college graduation. Marin not only inherited her father's company but she also became sole caretaker of her down-syndrome brother John. Stressed to the max, she searches for some much needed help. Along comes Philip Wilder; the answer to her prayers. Or was he? Philip has a secret that threatens to send her world crashing in around her. Trust me, this is one story you won't want to miss.

Wonderful,touching story of life with a Down's Syndrome brother

This is the second book I have read by this author(Bygones book#1 of the Sommerfield Trilogy, was the first),and I am so impressed with the quality of her writing. She is truly gifted. I could not put this book down until I was finished with it early this morning! Really makes one think about about the plight of the disabled and their families,usually because of the cruelty of some members of society,and how people could truly bless their lives by welcoming them into society, encouraging,and supporting their independence so that they can live as fulfilling lives as possible.

Her storylines and characters are so absorbing I plan to read everything she has written,in fact, her "Waiting For Summer's Return" is next.I am anxiously awaiting the release of her 2nd book in the Sommerfield Trilogy book "Beginnings" in October.
