From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up—Warrior continues the saga of Kira, the fierce demon slayer introduced in Prophecy (HarperCollins, 2013)-a fantasy adventure novel set within an alternate history of feudal Korea. In the previous title, the protagonist obtained the legendary tidal stone that controls the seas and defeated the evil shaman who had infiltrated her kingdom. However, she couldn't prevent the deaths of her parents and her uncle, the king of Hansong. Without their leadership, the kingdom is thrown into chaos, and Kira must continue her quest for the two remaining treasures in order to fulfill the Dragon King's prophecy and bring peace to her land. In this installment, the teen attempts to retrieve a legendary jeweled dagger from the clutches of a dragon while continuing to serve as bodyguard to her nephew, the crown prince. The female warrior remains a compellingly rich character who learns to follow her instincts, trust others, and forgive. Her conflicted feelings about the attentions from two very different suitors add an interesting romance plotline, without deterring from the main story. This is an action-packed adventure with a fresh batch of terrifying enemies, surprise attacks, and unexpected allies. Realistic dialogue and an exciting pace make this a page-turner. Warrior is sure to satisfy Prophecy fans and win over new devotees.—Sunnie Lovelace, Wallingford Public Library, CT

From Booklist
Seventeen-year-old Kira, girl warrior in a mythic fantasy world, continues to protect her cousin—the young boy destined to rule the Iron Realm—against demons and political intrigues. In this second episode of the Prophecy series, the plot continues to build quickly through high-tension scenes of battle with half humans and warriors. Meanwhile, Kira is beset by revelations about the people around her, a formerly rejected suitor proves his worth, and a new friend moves from carefree companion to love interest. Though it is not quite as smooth at the outset as the first volume, readers will still be impatient for the next episode. Grades 7-10. --Francisca Goldsmith

From the Back Cover

First an outcast, now a hero.
But her fight rages on.

Kira, the yellow-eyed demon slayer who fiercely protected her kingdom—and the crown prince—has been proclaimed the Dragon Musado of the prophecy. With the help of the first lost treasure, the legendary tidal stone that controls the seas, she defeated the evil shaman.

But it wasn't enough.

Hansong is in chaos. The Demon Lord's minions have infiltrated the city, treason is brewing among the military ranks, and Kira is buried by the overwhelming loss of her parents. She's also plagued by the annoying feelings that blossom whenever she's around Jaewon. But she is determined that nothing will stop her from finding the second treasure needed to fulfill the Dragon King's prophecy. Not even the army of half-breed demons hot on her trail. If only she could learn to trust others . . .

Her father always said one person can change the world. Will it be Kira?

Even more exciting and action-packed than the first book, Warrior was a spectacular sequel and I’m dying for more!
By Vi the Vi3tBabe
Warrior was everything I was hoping for and more. Ellen kept me engaged and riveted with her cast of unforgettable characters and creatures, enchanting fantasy world, and plenty of action that had me shouting at the pages. Kira is by far one of my favorite female characters ever, that’s partly due the fact that I can relate to her a bit, I guess. As Kira and her friends journey to find the second of the Dragon King’s treasures, they have to deal with the threat of a war, tons of crazy and fierce demons who want to kill them, and Kira herself is waging an internal battle with the Demon Lord. The pacing was steady and Ellen killed it with those action scenes. You seriously can’t be bored with this book.

One of the things that keeps me chugging through these books is Kira. As with how I felt in Prophecy, I love how tough and “un-girly” she is, yet you also get to see softer sides of her pop up throughout the book. There were a couple scenes in the book that totally made me giggle because Kira was forced to step out of her comfort zone and experience a few things that “normal” girls would. I think she handled each obstacle she faced well, and with her own little twist to it that I really enjoyed. I don’t want to give anything away, but there’s a scene later on in the book where there’s a bit of tension between some of the men in Kira’s life that I found particularly entertaining and Kira’s thoughts on it definitely cracked me up. Also, I really admire Kira’s dedication and loyalty to her cousin, the crowned prince. Their friendship is so genuine and sincere, it just makes me smile. Like I said before, I also loved the relationship she has with her brothers. You only get to see one of them more so than the other in this book, but I loved their moments together with Kira.

Aside from Kira, the fantasy world itself was just plain awesome. Ellen dives in deeper into the terrain and creatures of this world and they are all pretty spectacular. Let me just say that I seriously want a dokkaebi of my own! You see a bunch of menacing demons that I couldn’t even begin to describe, and a couple mythological creatures, such as dragons and flying horses, that were captivating in their own right. There is just the tiniest touch of romance in here, but otherwise, it’s all fantasy and action and I love it!

Ellen Oh, you’ve done it again! I am even more in love with this series and I can’t wait for Book 3, to see how it all ends. I have to say, that ending was a bit sad (and you definitely tugged at my heart a couple times throughout the book in general), but all kinds of awesome. Ellen still manages to write just the right amount of story and scenery to get her point across and paint a vivid image without it being overkill and that’s exactly what I needed. If you enjoyed the first book, Prophecy, you’ll definitely want to pick up Warrior and devour it like I did!

A Fast-Paced, Brilliant Sequel!
By Jon (Scott Reads It!)
Prophecy easily was one of my favorite books of 2013 and I was so excited to read more of Kira's adventures in Warrior. Ellen Oh is such an amazing author (and an extremely epic person), I truly applaud her for making such an engaging fantasy series. Warrior doesn't suffer from 2nd book syndrome even slightly and I really thought that this book was extremely rewarding.

Kira seems to attract trouble wherever she seems to step, and yet, she's one of my favorite heroines. Kira is extremely self-sacrificing and selfless; she always puts the Prince and Jaewon's safety first. Not to mention the fact that Kira is a total kick-butt heroine whose skills never cease to surprise him. There were so many moments where I just wanted to give Kira a huge hug for my own sake, Oh better not mess with Kira because that would break my heart into two. Kira has gone through so many hoops and obstacles that I truly believe she deserves a happy ending in King.

Oh my dragons. Warrior is full of non-stop, fast-paced action scenes that were brilliantly written and I was so immersed in the world of the Seven Kingdoms. There is so much depth to the world of the Seven Kingdoms and I really enjoyed watching Oh explores so many new layers to this enticing world. I was completely addicted to Warrior to the point where by the time I reached the last portion of the book, I was filled with sadness because it hit me that I'm going to have to wait so long to read King, the final installment in The Dragon King Chronicles. The ending of Warrior was definitely the highlight of the book for me and it was absolutely epic. I desperately need King in my hands right now and I'm not ashamed to admit that I will resort to groveling if it means I can read it early!

Ellen Oh is a master at writing fantasy novels that are compulsively readable and brilliantly executed. Warrior is a strong sequel that maintains everything I loved about book #1 and also introduces so many wildly original concepts. It's truly upsetting that there is only one book left in The Dragon King Chronicles and I really don't want to say goodbye to these characters anytime soon.

Warrior falls short of Prophecy's action packed debut
By Samantha @ Where's My Bookmark?
It's definitely just "okay"

I enjoyed reading Prophecy, the first book in Ellen Oh’s The Dragon King Chronicles. It follows a brave young woman set out to protect her younger cousin from literally the forces of evil. I loved that. I was excited to pick up Warrior and King, book 2 and 3 of the trilogy. I didn’t love them.

Perhaps it was the whole prophecy/chosen one plot line that made book 2 and 3 so dull. We as readers pretty much know what’s supposed to happen (and how it ends) during book 1. So it makes me wonder why push on two additional books.

There was little to no new developments, new tension, or discoveries in either Warrior or King. New characters appear, but with little to no significance. Don’t even get me started on the romance aspects. It all seemed so one-sided and Kira’s remarks about how she didn’t have time for that sounded so true. She has no time for that! So, why are they still pushing it onto her. Geez!

Oddly enough, even the characters felt out of character. All of a sudden they felt different or were acting in a different manner without any explanation or prelude.

Again, like I noted when I reviewed Prophecy, it felt like I was being told the story, instead of being immersed into the fantasy world of the Seven Kingdoms.

Unfortunately, although I enjoyed Prophecy, both Warrior and King fell short of my expectations. I honestly wish I liked them more, but nope.

The Last Clinic: A Darla Cavannah Mystery, by Gary Gusick

In a fast-paced, suspenseful debut novel for fans of Harlan Coben and Lisa Gardner, detective Darla Cavannah goes Deep South in pursuit of a merciless killer.

Outside the local women’s health clinic, the Reverend Jimmy Aldridge waving his protest sign is a familiar sight. But that changes early one morning when someone shoots the beloved Reverend Jimmy dead. Sheriff Shelby Mitchell knows the preacher’s murder will shock the good people of Jackson—and the pressure to find the killer is immediate and intense, which is why Shelby calls in detective Darla Cavannah.

When police detective Darla moved from Philadelphia to Jackson with her husband—hometown football hero Hugh “the Glue” Cavannah—she never imagined the culture shock that awaited. Then after Hugh dies in a car crash, Darla enters a self-imposed exile in her Mississippi home, taking a leave of absence from the sheriff’s department. Now she’s called back to duty—or coerced, more like it, with Shelby slathering on his good-ole-boy charm nice and thick, like on a helping of barbecue.

Reluctantly partnered with a mulish Elvis impersonator, Darla keeps a cool head even as the community demands an arrest. The court of public opinion has already convicted the clinic’s doctor, Stephen Nicoletti, but Darla is just as sure he’s not guilty—even as she fights her growing attraction to him. From the genteel suburbs to a raunchy strip club, Darla follows a trail of dirty money and nasty secrets—until the day of judgment comes, and she faces down an ungodly assassin.

I Struggled With This One
By julie whiteley
The Last Clinic- (Darla Cavannah Mysteries) by Gary Gusick is a 2013 Alibi publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

I have started and stopped with this book several times, which of course is a strong indicator of how things eventually turned out, once I finally resolved to finish it once and for all.

First of all, I think the author was brave by centering the crime around such a hot button issue as abortion, which may have raised a few eyebrows initially. However, that subject matter was handled very professionally and Darla waded through the mine field and lived to tell the tale.

I had no problems with the set up per se, and I actually liked Darla, but I did have some issues with the way the south was characterized.

I have lived in four states across the deep south and have several relatives who reside in Mississippi, none of whom behave like the characters depicted in this novel and I feel this does the state a great disservice. There are many prolific authors from Mississippi as well as other talented artist.
So, for the record, just because someone is from the south doesn’t mean they are right wing extremist, religious zealots, stupid, ignorant, uneducated, or sexist, or go around blessing everyone’s heart.

Having said that, the mystery and crime elements are solid and there was even a little romance thrown in for good measure.

The writing is fine, the pace steady, with a few surprises along the way. However, the story didn’t immediately grab my attention and I really struggled to stay involved in it. I am glad I finally finished it though, as the last quarter of the book was compelling and Darla is very adept at interrogation, so it was fascinating to watch her work.

Overall, this one gets a 2.5 rounded to 3

Must read!
By bbstx
Who killed the crusading anti-abortion preacher? His wife? The doctor whose clinic he was trying to shut down? The rebellious step-daughter? The sleazy "gentlemen's club" owner? The lobbyist? (You really hope it is the Elvis-impersonating deputy sheriff!)

Against the background of the last abortion clinic in Jackson, Mississippi, a recently widowed ex-cop comes back to work to find the killer. The story moves at a good pace although once or twice it seemed a shade ponderous. Nevertheless, the author was able to take a hot topic and meld it into a murder mystery and make it entertaining.

The characters are well-drawn and believable, even the Elvis impersonator.

Often with new authors, it takes a while to get into the story or, I never manage to get into the story. I did not have that trouble with The Last Clinic. From the beginning, it was interesting and held my attention.

If you like good mystery stories, this is a tale for you.

Interesting characters and a believable plot
By Jonetta (Ejaygirl)
The setup
It's been six months since Detective Darla Cavannah's husband, Hugh, died in a car crash. She's roused from her leave of absence when her boss, the county sheriff, calls her in to help with a controversial murder case. She's "partnered" with another detective who's more infamous for being an Elvis impersonator than his investigative skills. Set in Jackson, Mississippi, the cultural views of the town share equal space with the hard facts of the investigation.

The issues
The murder victim is the renowned Rev. Jimmy Aldridge who most recently has been holding vigil each morning outside the local women's health clinic in a pretty outrageous manner. And, it's where he was murdered in the early morning hours. The politics around the case are crazy, heightened even more because of a controversial abortion bill before the legislature that was destined for failure before the Reverend's murder. It now may gain sympathy traction as the prime suspect is the clinic's doctor, Stephen Nicoletti. There's a real rush to judgment to accuse, try and convict him.

What I liked about the story
I really liked Darla who is smart, has a killer wit and knows how to manage the politics. She's a former Philadelphia detective, accepted here because she was married to the town's darling, a former NFL quarterback but she's still considered an outsider. Her humor is wry and she doesn't take the bait from the idiot detective she's partnered with on the case. Darla adeptly maneuvers around him, knowing when to let him take the credit for her investigative work and when to set him down a peg. She's skilled and followed the twists, turns and surprises to a stunning climax. There was a parallel subplot that intersected seamlessly at the right moment. And, there's a romance, which was a bit of a (nice) surprise.

I also liked how a controversial, lightening rod topic was managed, with friends and neighbors co-existing pretty well on opposite sides of the issue. The story managed to stay away from taking a particular stand and representing the issue through the eyes of the characters. It was really well done.

The bottom line
The best mysteries/suspense stories have to be well paced, with relevant conflicts, interesting characters and believable plots and/or procedurals. This book met all that criteria and more. The writing is nimble without wasted action or story. The color of the Southern culture is perfectly captured without relying heavily on caricature or stereotype. It's a really good story and I'm looking forward to the next book, especially as there are secondary characters I'd like to know better.

(I received an ARC from NetGalley)

Mia Fashion Plates And Cupcakes

CHAPTER 1 We Are Such Pros!
Do you need help with those, Katie?” I asked.

My friend Katie was carrying two cupcake carriers stacked on top of each other, and a bag of supplies dangled from her wrist. It made me a little nervous watching her. Katie is my BFF here in Maple Grove and I love her, but she’s had some serious cupcake disasters before.

“No, I got it,” Katie assured me. She carefully placed the carriers on our cupcake sales table and then looked around. “Wow, there’s some cool stuff here.”

We were inside the Maple Grove Women’s Club, which may not sound superexciting, except that it was the day of their craft fair. Local artists and craftspeople were setting up tables with the stuff they’d made, like knitted scarves and handmade beaded jewelry.

“Yeah, I hope we can look around a little,” I said. “Alexis was really smart to suggest we set up here.”

At that moment our friend Alexis walked up to us, carrying a notebook and a cash box.

“Did I just hear you say I was really smart?” she asked with a grin.

I nodded. “I never would have thought to sell cupcakes at a craft fair, but it’s kind of a genius idea.”

“Not genius, just obvious,” Alexis said. “People who go to craft fairs get hungry. Besides, our cupcakes are handmade too, and they’re like little works of art. I think the decorations and flavors you guys came up with are genius.”

“Thanks,” I said. I was pretty proud of what we had done. “We should get things set up before it starts.”

My mom is a member of the Women’s Club, so I had arrived early with her and started to set up the table. Once Alexis had suggested we sell at the craft fair, we came up with a theme: “Crafty Cupcakes.”

Whenever we do an event, we have to plan out a bunch of things: what flavor to make the cupcakes; how to decorate the cupcakes; how to display the cupcakes; and how to decorate the table. For the craft fair, I thought we should stick with what people think of as traditional “cupcakey” colors—pink, mint green, light blue, and yellow. So the first thing I did was put down a pink tablecloth. We had used it for a baby shower once, and we like to reuse things to help with the costs.

Then I set up a backdrop, which I made from one of those big trifold cardboard displays that you can get for school projects. For the middle panel, I cut out letters from scrapbook paper to spell out “Crafty Cupcakes.” The papers had little white flowers and dots on them, so it looked really cute. Then I had drawn some pictures of cupcakes along with pictures of crafty things, like paintbrushes and yarn and knitting needles.

On each side panel, I had printed out our Cupcake Club logo: a cupcake in a light blue wrapper with pink icing and a red cherry on top, and the words “cupcake” above it and “club” below. I had designed the logo myself at summer camp. We made T-shirts with the logo too, which we wore whenever we had a Cupcake event. Anyway, I stood up the backdrop at the back of the table, and then I was ready for the cupcake displays.

It’s tempting to buy cool new stuff for our displays each time, but then we wouldn’t make as much profit. And Alexis is always talking about profit, since that’s the money we get to keep. So we usually reuse what we can or make what we need. For this display, however, I bought some wooden cake stands from the craft store and painted them in our cupcakey colors. Then I added a clear, shiny coat so that it would be safe to put food on the stands. They looked really pretty on the table. They were on sale, and they were something we could use over and over again, so they were worth buying.

“I’ll get the rest of the cupcakes from the car,” Katie said, hurrying off.

“Mind if I set up the cash box?” Alexis asked.

“That’s fine. I’ve got this,” I said.

I slipped on some thin plastic gloves and opened up the first carrier. It contained our first batch of cupcakes: vanilla cake with vanilla icing, decorated with flowers made of fondant. Fondant is this paste made of sugar that you can roll out like dough and cut into shapes. We’d used pink and yellow for the flowers, so I put them on the green cake stand for a nice contrast.

The second carrier held our “yarn” cupcakes. We’d made red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. Then we’d used marzipan, which is a sugary almond paste that you can shape into stuff—kind of like edible modeling clay. We’d dyed it blue and then rolled it into little balls of “yarn,” to go with the crafts theme. The yarn looked really cute sitting on top of the icing. I put those on the pink cake stand.

Katie came in carrying more cupcake carriers. The third held chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting. We’d decorated them with little jelly candies that we thought looked like jewels. For our fourth kind of cupcake, we had gone with one of our more adventurous flavors—lemon ginger—because a lot of people will buy a cupcake if it’s a flavor they’ve never tried before. We’d topped them with pale-yellow lemon frosting and decorated them with birds.

I think I was most proud of the bird cupcakes, because I had experimented a lot to find the best way to do them. You know those old-fashioned candies that are shaped like leaves? I thought they kind of looked like birds’ bodies. So I’d sliced them through the middle to make them thinner. Then I’d used little tubes of icing to draw on an eye, a beak, and wings, and I’d made swirly designs all around them. They looked really amazing.

Katie helped me put the rest of the cupcakes on the stands, and then we stashed the carriers under the table. Alexis, Katie, and I stood in front of the table to see how everything looked.

“This might be our nicest display yet,” Alexis remarked. “It’s too bad Emma is not here.”

Emma, the fourth member of the Cupcake Club, was off on a modeling job in the city.

“I’ll send her a picture,” Katie said, taking out her phone.

Alexis scrolled through the screen on her own smartphone. “So, display, check. Cupcakes, check. Business cards, check. Cash box, check. Flyers, check.” She looked up at us. “Wow, I can’t believe it. I think we’re all set. We didn’t forget anything.”

I checked the time. “There’s a few minutes before the doors open. I want to look around before it gets busy.”

“I’ll watch the table,” Alexis offered.

“Thanks,” Katie said. “I want to look around too.”

So Katie and I walked around the room, checking out the crafts. Some of the stuff was kind of old-fashioned and looked like my grandma would like it, but some of it was really cool. We went to a table with beaded jewelry first, and Katie picked up a bracelet made out of chunky glass beads.

“This is so cool! The beads look like candy, almost,” she said.

The woman setting up the booth smiled. “I call that my ‘candy shop’ style,” she said, and then nodded to our shirts. “So, you’re the girls from the cupcake stand?”

We nodded. “Yes,” I said. “We started a cupcake club at school and turned it into a business.”

“That’s really ambitious,” she said. “Good luck today!”

We thanked her and moved on to a table full of knitted scarves and then to another cool table with all these awesome animals and creatures sewn from felt. The girl behind it looked like she was in high school, and her blond hair was streaked with red and purple.

“These are sooo cute!” Katie squealed, picking up a little green squirrel with a goofy face.

“That’s my favorite one,” the girl said.

Katie dug into her jeans pocket and pulled out some bills. “I have to get this. You’re coming home with me, Nutsy.”

I laughed. “Nutsy?”

“Well, she’s a squirrel, isn’t she? And squirrels like nuts,” Katie said.

“I think it’s a good name for a squirrel,” said the girl, giving Katie her change. She also handed over a business card with the name Super Stuffies on it.

Then I noticed people were starting to come through the doors, so I tapped Katie on the arm.

“We’d better go help Alexis,” I said.

When we got back to the table I saw a glamorous-looking woman with long black hair standing there. She wore black skinny jeans, black boots, and a black short-sleeved turtleneck. For a second I didn’t recognize her.

“Hi, Mom,” I said, running up to her. My mom always looks stunning, whether she’s at the supermarket or going out to eat at a hot restaurant in the city. You’ve always got to look good when you’re a fashion stylist.

“Mia, the table looks lovely,” Mom said. “You girls did a wonderful job.”

“They certainly did.”

A gray-haired woman walked up to us. She wore a long, flowy purple tunic over black leggings, which made her look very artistic.

“Mia, this is Mrs. Barrows, the president of the Women’s Club,” my mom said. “This my daughter and her friends Katie and Alexis.”

Mrs. Barrows looked over the cupcake booth. “This is a lovely addition to our craft fair. I can’t believe you girls made these cupcakes yourselves. They’re beautiful!”

Alexis took a vanilla flower cupcake from the stand. “They taste as good as they look,” she said, handing her one.

“Why, thank you!” Mrs. Barrows said. She unwrapped it and took a bite. “You’re certainly right. This is delicious! You girls are quite professional.”

Then two women walked up to our table, and we had to go into “sales mode,” as Alexis would say. Katie and I answered questions about what was in each cupcake, and Alexis took the money, made change, and made sure everyone left with a business card and a flyer.

It was kind of a long day. We were pretty much busy the whole time, and we took turns leaving the table to eat the bagged lunches we had brought. Things finally slowed down in the afternoon.

Alexis put her hands on her hips, surveying the table. We had about two dozen cupcakes left. She looked around the room, counting.

“We should give one to each of the vendors,” she said finally. “I don’t think we’ll sell out, and these are the kind of people who appreciate homemade things.”

I’m always amazed by Alexis. It’s like her mind is constantly churning out great business ideas.

“Let’s do it,” I agreed, and we took turns going to the tables and giving a cupcake to each vendor—along with a business card, of course. Everyone was really happy to get a cupcake.

We even had time to do a little shopping by the end of the day. I bought a really cool crocheted infinity scarf with black fringe along the edges, and when Katie wasn’t looking, I went back to the jewelry table and got her the bracelet that looked like candy. I figured I’d save it for her birthday.

I also went back to the girl with the stuffies. One of her creatures was a little purple monster, and I thought Ethan might like it. He’s the mostly-annoying-but-sometimes-cute son of Lynne, my dad’s girlfriend.

“No charge,” the girl said when I tried to pay. “That was an awesome cupcake.”

“Wow, thank you,” I said. “That’s really nice of you.”

When I got back to the table, Alexis was counting out the cash box.

“Except for the cupcakes we gave away, we sold them all,” she said, looking at the clock, “with only five minutes to go. That’s pretty perfect.”

“Definitely,” Katie agreed.

“Mrs. Barrows said we were professional,” I reminded them. “Maybe she’s right. I mean, it’s like we’ve figured out how to smooth away all the problems we usually have.”

“This was a pretty smooth event,” Alexis agreed, “but there are always going to be problems. That’s just the way it is in a business.”

“Maybe,” I said. “But I’ll keep my fingers crossed that things stay smooth.”

Little did I know that things were about to get bumpier than lumpy cupcake frosting—but it wasn’t the Cupcake Club’s fault at all.

Perfect for middle school girls
By T. Murrell
Mia loves design and fashion. She helps with the design elements in the cupcake business she runs with her friends. But when a fashion club is started she decides to see if she can juggle the cupcake business, fashion club, school, and all of her other activities. Problems arise in both her home and school life that might ruin everything she has worked so hard for.

The art work is whimsical and helps give the feel of a diary. The author has written a series that will definitely appeal to the middle school girls. Each book in the series is a stand alone story, but each book showcases a different girl in the cupcake club. Every young girl will be able to find a character to relate to. The characters deal with real life issues and the resolutions are written in a way that young girls can relate to. The importance of organization, family, and friends is showcased in the story.

I received this book free of charge from Children's Lit in exchange for my honest review.

More Zeal Than Discretion: The Westward Adventures of Walter P. Lane (Elma Dill Russell Spencer Series in the West and Southwest), by Jimm

Walter P. Lane emigrated from Ireland as a young boy, fought in three wars, sailed the Texas coast with a privateer, and traveled to California and Arizona in search of gold. What drove this man, who in many ways typifies the adventurers who contributed to the westward expansion in the United States during the early nineteenth century?

Through his mining of personal papers, memoirs, contemporary sources, and archived collections, Jimmy L. Bryan Jr. has produced a comprehensive portrait of the man who charged across the field at San Jacinto, aided in the removal of Indians and Tejano settlers from the East Texas Redlands, stormed Monterrey with the Texas Rangers during the U.S.-Mexican War, commanded a brigade of Confederate soldiers during the Civil War, supported the return to white rule during the turbulent Reconstruction era, and served the State of Texas in various public capacities. Bryan shows how the adventurism of Lane and his comrades provided both ethos and impetus for the westward migration.

More Zeal than Discretion will appeal to historians and readers interested in Texas and the West, the Civil War, and the culture of American manhood.

Review
"Bryan is not content to offer a straightforward narrative of Lane'scareer. Rather, he seeks to shed light on the culture of Americanmasculinity in which Lane operated. To that end, the author dwells upontopics that might not garner much attention in a less ambitious study, such as Lane's psychological need for recognition, his views on race, his attitude toward women . . . , as well as how he dealt with theabsence of adventure in his declining years"--Sam W. Haynes, Fronteras."

[F]inally, we have a biography of a man who in many ways epitomizedmuch of what was good and bad in the ordinary American frontiersman . . . . The Lane whom Bryan reveals to us is not necessarily admirable . . . . Lane's primary motivation is little more than a quest for adventure and excitement which, Bryan points out, played more of a role in nationaldevelopment than most modern Americans realize"--Charles M. Robinson III, Western Historical Quarterly

Storming the Eagle's Nest: Hitler's War in the Alps, by Jim Ring

From the Fall of France in June 1940 to Hitler's suicide in April 1945, the swastika flew from the peaks of the High Savoy in the western Alps to the passes above Ljubljana in the east. The Alps as much as Berlin were the heart of the Third Reich.

'Yes,' Hitler declared of his headquarters in the Bavarian Alps, 'I have a close link to this mountain. Much was done there, came about and ended there; those were the best times of my life . . . My great plans were forged there.'

With great authority and verve, Jim Ring tells the story of how the war was conceived and directed from the Fuhrer's mountain retreat, how all the Alps bar Switzerland fell to Fascism, and how Switzerland herself became the Nazi's banker and Europe's spy centre. How the Alps in France, Italy and Yugoslavia became cradles of resistance, how the range proved both a sanctuary and a death-trap for Europe's Jews - and how the whole war culminated in the Allies' descent on what was rumoured to be Hitler's Alpine Redoubt, a Bavarian mountain fortress.

A well outlined bigger picture, but where was the detail?
By Nelson
I have to say I was savouring the reading of this book but, sadly, once I finished, I ultimately came away feeling a little disappointed.

I approached this volume with enthusiasm as, to the best of my knowledge, there have been no other recent books telling the story of the Alps at war in such a holistic fashion - the region really does have a mystical and romantic feel about it (a point Mr. Ring labours) and at the same time I also have to admit that my knowledge of the wartime history of the area was somewhat scanty; I for one was unclear how the history of the region might have all fitted together for example. This bigger picture scene setting was well done, especially when discussing the precarious positioning of Switzerland throughout the war.

So in the context of the above comment, I would have to say that my disappointment was twofold. First, I found the lack of depth frustrating; there simply was not enough of what looks tantalisingly like some really fascinating detail. This, to me at least, is the missed opportunity for this book - the fascinating history of the region was characterised much less by the clash of the big battalions as seen on the Eastern Front or that of the logistics war with the West but much more about how individuals could and did influence events.... Guisan, Dansey, Dulles, Tito, as well as myriad of other lesser characters, are all worthy of greater exposition.

Despite the scrimping on the detail, Mr. Ring has certainly done enough to demonstrate that he knows his stuff well and so, personally, I would have happily read a much longer book encompassing much more of the story of the various resistance groups, spy rings, occupiers, invaders, refugees, locals, politicians both national and international, liberators, deserters, prisoners etc than this volume goes into.

My second issue with the book was really stylistic. Sometimes the writing style was good, but at other times it was bemusing or repetitive or flabby or simply confusing. The author / editors seem to have had the strange idea of mixing up various descriptive writing styles when in fact all that was required was for someone to apply some crispness and organisation to the prose. The other problem, as it is with most history books these days, was a lack of detailed maps.

To conclude, I would say this is an interesting book which is well worth reading (so I do recommend it), but the satisfaction derived from it was a little like eating sushi - your appetite is whetted at first, you feel satiated at the time of eating but unfortunately one is hungry for more a very short while later.

Innocence, by Penelope Fitzgerald

Beautiful Chiara is the last of the Ridolfi, a Florentine family of long lineage and eccentric habits. She is smitten with Salvatore, a brilliant but penniless doctor, a rational man who wants nothing to do with romance. This is the story of how these two--with the best intentions, the kindest of instincts, and the most meddlesome of friends--make each other wonderfully miserable inside.

From Publishers Weekly
This charming, amusing and deft novel by a winner of the Booker Prize is set in Florence in the 1950s, though the characters might have stepped directly out of the Renaissance. The slightly eccentric characters share the trait suggested by the title, and never once does Fitzgerald strike a false note. Unique in the annals of Euro-American marital commerce is an aging count who trades his aristocratic lineage to an American in marriage and is "left worse off than before." His daughter, beautiful, featherbrained Chiara, loves the solemnly scientific neurologist Salvatore, who has fled his native southern Italy and his father's deep involvement in politics; the elder is a passionate disciple of one of Mussolini's most distinguished victims. Others in a richly peopled scene include Maddalena, accurately known as Aunt Mad, and the hearty, bumptious, meddling, English schoolgirl Barney. This is a comedy of manners in the distinctively English tradition, brimming with the sweet pleasures of that high style. The novel shines with intelligence, wit, sly irony and the observant eye of a writer who seems unable to miss anything pertinent to her vocation.

Review
'Reading a Penelope Fitzgerald novel is like being taken for a ride in a peculiar kind of car. Everything is of top quality - the engine, the coachwork and the interior all fill you with confidence. Then, after a mile or so, someone throws the steering-wheel out of the window.' Sebastian Faulks 'Wise and ironic, funny and humane, Fitzgerald is a wonderful, wonderful writer.' David Nicholls 'Penelope Fitzgerald's Innocence seems to me to be about real people undergoing real experiences, more real and more interesting than most biographies, and it carries absolute conviction as to time and place. What more could one ask of a novel?' Spectator Books of the Year 'Innocence weilds a curious fascination, replete with the sense of sleepy, slightly anxious fatalism that pervades much of the Italian cinema of the period. Its magic, and its message, are as oblique and inconclusive as the lives of its characters, but both have a lingering power, refreshingly fictive, deliciously un-English.' Literary Review 'I know of no one who expresses so deftly and entertainingly the way in which life seldom turns out as expected. A wonderful book.' Spectator 'This is by far the fullest and richest of Penelope Fitzgerald's novels, and also the most ambitious. Her writing, as ever, has a natural authority, is very funny, warm and gently ironic, and full of tenderness towards human beings and their bravery in living.' TLS

From the Back Cover
“A delectable comedy of manners.” —Boston Globe

The Ridolfi are a Florentine family of long lineage and little money. It is 1955, Italy is still struggling back after the war, and the family, like its decrepit villa and farm, has seen better days. Among the Ridolfi, only eighteen-year-old Chiara shows anything like vitality. But it’s a vitality matched by innocence—a dangerous combination, to herself and to all who love her.

Chiara sets her heart on the bull-headed Salvatore, a brilliant young doctor from the south who resolved long ago to be emotionally dependent on no one. Stymied, she calls on her resourceful English girlfriend, Barney, to help her make the impossible match. And so ensues a comedy of errors, in which guileless lovers, with the best of intentions, considerable charm, and the kindest of instincts, succeed in making one another thoroughly and astonishingly miserable.

“An exquisite mosaic, where every tiny piece is part of a world.” —A. S. Byatt, Threepenny Review

PENELOPE FITZGERALD (1916–2000) was one of the most elegant and distinctive voices in British fiction. She won the National Book Critics Circle Award in fiction for The Blue Flower, the Booker Prize for Offshore, and three of her novels—The Bookshop, The Gate of Angels, and The Beginning of Spring—were short-listed for the Booker Prize.

A human comedy
By R. M. Peterson
Penelope Fitzgerald's career as a novelist -- she also was a noted biographer and essayist -- divided into two phases: first, novels set in England and relating in some way to her own life (one of which, "Offshore", won the Booker Prize); and second, novels that were more imaginary and with historical settings, usually foreign to England.

INNOCENCE (1986) was the first of her novels from this second phase. It is an offbeat comedy. Set in Italy in the mid-1950s, it revolves around the courtship and early years of marriage between Chiara Ridolfi, a young Italian countess from Florence whose family has lost much of its wealth, and Salvatore Rossi, a doctor from a backwater village in southern Italy. Chiara is a little on the flighty side, and Salvatore is overly sensitive about his plebian background, astoundingly self-centered, and often rude. Other principal characters (and they all are "characters" as well) are Chiara's father Giancarlo, her aunt Maddalena, her cousin Cesare (who maintains the family farm and vineyards), and her close friend from the convent school Holy Innocents in England she attended, Lavinia ("Barney") Gore-Barnes. The six of them find themselves in, or get themselves into, all kinds of odd situations which would embarrass, even mortify, most of us, but for them (usually) they prove to be so much water off a duck's back.

The novel's genre, I suppose, is "social comedy." But INNOCENCE is not really satiric, nor for the most part is it "laugh-out-loud." It pokes fun at its characters but more, to borrow a phrase, at "the human comedy." The humor is on the droll side, although some of the goings on approach the madcap and zany. INNOCENCE is literate, entertaining, and often witty. It is not much more, although I don't sense that Fitzgerald aspired for it to be much more.

At the conclusion of the novel, after tragedy has been averted seemingly through happenstance, Salvatore Rossi exclaims, "What's to become of us? We can't go on like this." Cesare, the taciturn one, responds: "Yes, we can go on like this. We can go on exactly like this for the rest of our lives."

Something has to come last
By taking a rest
I very much enjoy Ms. Fitzgerald's work, of the nine novels she wrote I have read 8, with The Booker Award Winning work "Offshore" remaining. Presuming those that bestowed the Award were correct, and the other reviewers of "Innocence" are also correct, if I were to rank the 8 novels I have read this is number 8, and is likely to be number 9 when "Offshore" has been completed.
Ms. Fitzgerald often has left a book with the ending open, at times in an initially jarring manner. This is again the case with "Innocence", and the ending is not alone. This work is lengthy when compared to most of Ms. Fitzgerald's works, and its length allows for more of the wonderful characters she creates, and the usually odd circumstances they create, or are victimized by. In this case, with one exception, even when well done, I generally felt nothing or actively disliked the players.
The exception is Barney, one of the most unusual, colorful, and unconventional characters Ms. Fitzgerald created. When a female is described when smiling, as having the perfect teeth for an Ogress you are reading about someone interesting. Barney is overwhelming in everything she does, there are no half measures, and the world of half tones is invisible to her. Snap decisions based upon a handshake suffice to sanction or condemn a marriage, choose a mate, and serve as a basis for her turning her life 180 degrees in less than a moment.
There is one other prominent player in the book, and he is the Doctor. However he is as annoying as he is prominent, and there is nothing entertaining or clever about him. He interacts with a variety of people who are all uniformly one dimensional, and are impossible to care about, much less dislike, they, like the story, drift along.
But as I said there is Barney. You have to love a woman who asks a pregnant friend, "Do you want a girl, or a little teapot?" Ms. Fitzgerald is a wonderful writer, and even this book is better than many other writers I have read. The previous works have just been so much better, that this was a disappointment.

Commedia
By Roger Brunyate
Penelope Fitzgerald did not start publishing novels until she was over sixty, but then she came out with nine compact volumes, amazingly varied in their setting and subject, but all filled with deep human wisdom. Her two best books, in my opinion, are THE BLUE FLOWER, set in the Germany of the early Romantics, and THE BEGINNING OF SPRING, set in Moscow shortly before the Russian Revolution. INNOCENCE takes place around Florence in the nineteen-fifties, when the Italian economy was beginning to re-establish itself after the war. Its leading characters, however, the Ridolfis, are aristocratic holdovers from a much earlier age. The family villa, the Ricordanza, is in disrepair due to lack of funds; the present Conte lives a distinguished but precarious life in a flat in Florence, accompanied by his daughter Chiara when she is home from her convent school in England; the family vineyards are run by her cousin Cesare, a man with few words but a good heart.

Near the beginning of this wry comedy (whose quality of romantic excess comes closest to THE GATE OF ANGELS), Chiara announces her engagement to a thirty-year-old doctor, Salvatore Rossi, and the larger part of the book shows how this romance came about. Rossi is from the South, a self-made man of humble origins, whose medical vocation was established at the age of ten when his father took him to visit the socialist Antonio Gramsci on his prison deathbed. Both lovers suffer from a stubborn innocence: Chiara in her impulsive generosity, Salvatore in his foolish pride. Their courtship is a whirlwind of misunderstandings; they seem as adept at making themselves miserable as the other happy. Likeable as they are, one wants to pick them up and shake them!

Fitzgerald is extraordinary for her ability to immerse herself in every aspect of Italian life of this period. This is far from the tourist Tuscany of fiction, and it is sometimes hard to recall that the book was not written by an Italian. An Italian, moreover, with an extraordinarily wide range of experience, encompassing people from all walks of life: aristocrats, workers, rich, poor, intellectuals, communists, and Vatican officials. It is so full of observations about history, politics, the economy, manners, and regional customs that it might almost be used as a source book. In some ways the texture of the story is more interesting than the story it contains. Fitzgerald does not make it easy for the reader; she expects us to share her knowledge rather than having her explain it -- several quotations, for instance, are left in the original Italian untranslated (it seems they are modified Dante). Despite its brief length and considerable wit, be warned: this can be a challenging book.

[Nothing that I can possibly say here is half so good as A. S. Byatt's wonderful account of Fitzgerald's novels in THE THREEPENNY REVIEW, an indispensable essay for anybody interested in this very varied author. It is available on line; select past issues #73.]
