A great book that young kids will love!

Meet Flat Stanley, boy adventurer, who, due to an unfortunate incident with a falling bulletin board, had been reduced to only two dimensions. But being 1/2″ thick can have it’s advantages, too!

In the 10th book of the Worldwide Adventures series, Flat Stanley and his friends explore the state of Texas, and have more than a few adventures along the way. . .

This is a very cute book that teaches kids not only geographical and historical facts, but also grammar and the importance of friendships and helping each other. What better way to teach kids than with a funny character like Flat Stanley, who gets into the most ridiculous predicaments due to his unfortunate circumstances.

I chose to give this book only 3.5 stars, however, because I felt there were more than a few places where the author got a little off-track from the story line, where parts of the book just don’t seem to “fit” or seem a little disjointed. I feel like better editing would have solved this problem, or perhaps adding in a few more pages with smoother transitions. Over all, however, this is a great book that young kids would love!

remember the alamo stanley

The 10th Flat Stanley World Wide Adventures book "Showdown at the Alamo" by Jeff Brown follows Stanley on vacation to Texas with his brother Arthur to see his friends, Carlos and Eduardo. The book not only follows him on adventures in Texas and teaches the reader about Texas, but also shares Stanley's feelings about becoming famous and all that goes with it. This book is written by a different author that the creator of Flat Stanley. The writing is in a simpler form aimed at readers between the ages of 6-10. I read this with by 9 year old and it was at about her reading level as well as her understanding. She liked the book fine. She had done the Flat Stanley thing where you mail him to someone during the school year. So she was already familiar with him. She gave it 3 stars.

Arcadia Falls

Arcadia Falls is the third and final book in the Arkadien trilogy by Kai Meyer.

What an epic and thrilling conclusion that will leave no questions unanswered, starting with a bang, digging it's claws into you so you can't put the book down until you reach the fantastic and perfect ending that will leave everyone satisfied.

I've thoroughly enjoyed each and every book in this series, getting better with each new instalment, and definitely and appropriately saving the best for last.

Full of twists and turns which I've come to expect from Kai's writing, there's never a dull moment which in a book consisting of 471 pages is a rarity and a very welcome surprise.

This book is full of amazingly written characterisations, and you need not look no further than our two leads: Rosa and Alessandro, two fully fleshed out characters that I've loved reading about, and have sadly had to say goodbye to in this series swan song.

Combining the Sicilian Mafia and the paranormal has worked a treat, especially having the two leaders of two opposing and long feuding families fall in love with each other, against the odds these two who through a long ago concordat are pretty much forbidden to be together, are now hunted by their own families.

For those of you that like forbidden romances, feuding families mixed up with paranormal aspects, then check these books out.

A great series that I plan on re-reading, highly recommended!

GREAT ENDING!

I’m always sad when series ends. And this one I’m sad to see go. I think the way the series progressed and the how it ended was good.

Plot: This plot follows what has been happening since the first book. The clan’s are gearing up and choosing sides for a war. People are betraying people and others are dying. I think this plot is full of excitement and really doesn’t stray the reader. If anything, the reader is captivated by all the fighting, the non-stop drama and SECRETS!

Family Secrets: Okay, this part I was the most excited about. I have read so much about Rose’s life that when things were FINALLY coming to light it was like,”OMG!” The author made it easy for the reader to piece together all the info and for me, it gave me a huge adrenaline rush.

Ending: The ending is great! It did go down a road I certainly didn’t expect but it didn’t push me away either. In fact, I felt more intrigued once things started to look clear. I like that it went back in history. The reader has a chance to travel the world and visit unique places and most importantly, go back to where it all started.

This is great ending to an awesome series. I have never read one like this series before and I’m honored that I and a chance to read it and enjoy it. Answering all my questions and ending brilliantly, Arcadia Falls is great!

About the Author

Marjorie Agosín is the Pura Belpré Award-winning author of I Lived on Butterfly Hill. She was raised in Chile by Jewish parents. Her family moved to the United States to escape the horrors of the Pinochet takeover of their country. Coming from a South American country and being Jewish, Agosín’s writings demonstrate a unique blending of these cultures. She has received the Letras de Oro Prize for her poetry, and her writings about, and humanitarian work for, women in Chile have been the focus of feature articles in The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, and Ms. Magazine. She has also won the Latino Literature Prize for her poetry. She is a Spanish professor at Wellesley College.

Masterfully and beautifully written

Eleven-year-old Celeste Marconi, who lived with her parents, abuela (grandmother), and nanny in the port city of Valparaiso, Chile, had no idea that her happy and carefree life was about to be turned upside down. As news spread that the newly-appointed Chilean president was overthrown by a dictator, Celeste's joy was quickly overshadowed by fear, especially when some of her classmates mysteriously began disappearing. Just when Celeste thought that she couldn't handle another bout of terror, her parents, who were doctors and seen by the new government as subversives for aiding the poor, decide to go into hiding. And worse --- they tell Celeste that she must leave her beloved Butterfly Hill (her home, named after her favorite flower) to live with her aunt in America.

Told in first person, Celeste narrates her life's journey during a turbulent time in Chile's history. Parallel to Celeste's experiences, award-winning Chilean poet Agostin knows, first-hand, what it was like to live in fear --- she escaped the horrors of Pinochet's 17-year dictatorship by moving to the US. In her first book geared for young adults, Agostin has taken her experiences and created a story of courage against all odds. Tightly woven with historical facts, Celeste is confronted with a plethora of obstacles --- both in her homeland and during her three-year stay with her aunt in Juliette Cove, Maine.

Agostin' s narrative is remarkably laced with poetic imagery of beauty, love, and hope in the midst of horrific crimes toward humanity. Luminous tale of fear, exile and loss experienced with hope and optimism

Majorie Agosin’s I Lived on Butterfly Hill is a superb book: elegant, deeply moving, luminous, and gently powerful. The prose is luscious and evocative – themes, imagery, and metaphors are continuously embellished and resurfaced throughout the book creating a deep sense of unity of ideas and emotional continuity for the characters. Although this 454-page book is marketed to readers ages 10 to 14, the wisdom, delights and sheer loveliness of the prose will deeply engage and enthrall readers of all ages.

The story follows Celeste, a Chilean youngster whose life is radically changed after a military coup in her country. Friends slowly begin vanishing from school, people become reluctant to discuss events, and fear, uncertainly, and dread become a visceral part of life. Celeste is a well-loved daughter of two doctors who tend to the poor. She is poetically inclined and has already observed that rain in her country falls two different ways – on the wealthy it brings nourishment and makes flowers bloom, on the poor it destroys their cardboard and tin homes and spoils their food. She is wise because she is observant.

After her parents are forced to go into hiding, Celeste is sent to Maine with no English, no sense of American life, and no skills in the world of “chores.” She also has no knowledge of snow or cold or silence or solitude. We walk with Celeste through her years in Maine as she comes to understand and accept and value this northern world while always yearning for home and for the parents who might or might not still be alive. Eventually, the Chilean dictatorship falls and she returns home to yet another prolonged adjustment to a world that is no longer the world she left so many years before.

She finds that many things, and many people, are gone for good. Others return to Celeste, and to Chile, very slowly. I Lived on Butterfly Hill is an extraordinary tale of loss, displacement, and exile, and it delves deeply into the fear and dislocation of children and societies undergoing political tumult. Yet it is not a tale of grief and despair, for although losses do occur, the characters we come to know never lose their faith, hope, resilience and optimism. This book will offer a great deal of solace and strength to children and their disrupted families around the globe today, and for those of us lucky enough to share this journey via Butterfly Hill, we can only thank Marjorie Agosin for the courage, the tenderness, and the beauty of this tale.

poetic and memorable

The story grows on you over time and slowly the different characters come to life as their own experiences change because of the political changes in Chile. The protagonist, Celeste, who is also the narrator, is a dreamy and ethereal character in the beginning of the book, losing herself in her own pre-adolescent world, as she stares at the night sky and flies in her imagination. As the novel develops and Celeste has to face fear and loneliness and exile, she becomes even stronger as a person, even more of an idealist, but also more aware of the plight of those around her. Her bonds with her grandmother and her nanny are the strongest, and the reader comes to know them also quite well and understand their own very different personal histories and plights. I felt that I didn't get to know Celeste's parents quite as well, as their stories were sketched in a more general manner and the protagonist never stopped admiring both of them. Maybe a bit of friction between daughter and parents before their world changed would have grounded the story a bit more, without threatening the strong family ties . . . .

I found the references to the dictatorship and its aftermath, vague and ominous as they were, quite effective. Young (and older) readers who want to learn more about what happened can find that information in a number of books. In a few, well-selected passages, this novel captures the fear of not knowing, the fear of asking, the fear of even writing about the disappeared in a way that touches the reader. But it also captures the joys of strolling around, having ice cream, dancing, and staring at the stars. In future editions, it would be helpful to include a brief historical account at the end and a beginning bibliography for those students and teachers who will use this book as the basis for a larger discussion on the history of Chile. Celeste will be their spirited guide and inspiration.

JESSICA HANDLER has written on the topic of writing through grief for The Writer magazine and Psychology Today online, and has been a featured speaker in grief and writing workshops. More than a writing guide

It's hard to even begin to think about writing about loss since the pain so often stops us in our tracks, but Handler's guide shows us how to make that journey. I enjoyed the contributions by other authors, but I liked Handler's inclusion of her own story the best.

Catharsis through writing

This is a wonderful book for beginners and experienced writers alike, a guide for turning big, blurry, inarticulate emotion into concrete expression. It's cathartic just to read a book like this, but it will be most useful for those who wish to write about what might be their most difficult material in a serious way, maybe not just for themselves but for an audience.

Invaluable

Loss is about endings, and beginnings. Jessica Handler's guide allows the reader to reflect upon grief and loss with wisdom, comfort, and humor, while showing the writer how to take action to heal, to share, and create a great story. After reading her incredible memoir, Invisible Sisters, I waited with great anticipation of the release of this book. Whether you have suffered the loss of a loved one, a career, or other types of grief and loss, Braving the Fire is a must read.

a plan is addresses in a useful, straightforward and graceful way

The writing style is disappointing. The Lord knows we men need help in this non-exclusive battle. This book does provide valuable information and insight. Clearly, a plan is addressed in a useful, straightforward and graceful way. I withhold a star because I found it annoying and unfortunate that the author chose to invoke a repetitive, full-alphabetical list that eventually somewhat devalued the messages for me. I began to feel that it was unlikely there would be equally valuable or important principles to (repeatedly) fill each of the 26 letters in the English alphabet but that his outline had been made so he had to find something to say for each of the 26, now-expected, points. At the least this perceived contrivance was a distraction for me. I am not saying do not read the book. Quite to the contrary, EVERY man should read this and any respected book on the topic. We men cannot get too much information and guidance on fighting the enemy. I only wish Mr. Dennis had focused more on the content and substance and less on the perturbing alphabetical gimmick.

I've been a member of various men's groups that have read a lot of books like this, but this one is a bit different in that the plan it offers is really workable. If you struggle with lust or pornography, or if you are involved with a men's ministry, it would benefit you to read this book. Also check out their website for more info.

amusing early reader

I took a chance on this one, as I didn't know the author and I'm always skeptical about writing styles for early readers. This one was funny and engaging, if a bit silly. The vocabulary is mostly controlled, though it could be a bit better. Mostly readable on an independent basis, which is important.

Geronimo Stilton has been involved in ten other adventures. This is his eleventh and he could be about to finally fail a mission. Catardone the cat is a bad cat. A very bad cat. He and his cohorts have found a way to travel back in time to 1889 Paris, where they plan to upset history and the biggest monument in Paris!

Professor Von Volt, a famous scientist on Mouse Island, built a time machine for Geronimo and his family just to defeat the devious cats. The "Speedrat" zooms through time and space faster than a bully who has meet his comeuppance. To Paris they go. Disguised as construction workers, the Stilton's help build the Eiffel Tower while trying to find out what the cats are up to. The plan discovered, Geronimo realizes he cannot defeat Catardone alone and calls in a special weapon. Hopefully, Catardone and his cataclysmic catastrophe can be stopped before the world as we know it no longer exists.

This is my first Geronimo Stilton graphic novel and I enjoyed every panel. Never interested in graphic novels until just recently, PaperCutz books are great fun, humorous, and didactic. Kids will love this book. The story is funny in a way kids enjoy, while entertaining adults as well. The antics of the Catardone Cats (Gang?), remind me of Sylvester and Tweety Bird or the Roadrunner and Wyle E. Coyote.

I really liked the occasional box detailing something about that era or about the Eiffel Tower in particular. One of the designs Catardone tries to use is a twenty-first century design, mixing the past with the future. How will the cat of all cats pass off the architecture of a twenty-first century architect to the creator of the Eiffel Tower? The building looks like a pickle and uses details not yet seen in Europe. Have you ever wondered what it took to build the Eiffel Tower? Well, honestly, I never have, but the information in We Always Have Paris is fascinating and I am glad to have read it. The snippets are good and kids will find them interesting. I also like the occasional definition for an uncommon word. It simply appears in a small box, no intrusion, no graphic pulling your eyes, and yet difficult to overlook.

The illustrations are brightly colored, finely detailed, and expressive; all of the qualities of good illustration. The panels of the story are fun to look at, they enhance the text, and could easily be a successful Saturday morning cartoon. The only "bad" I have to say about the illustrations concerns the characters that are cats. At times, without the disguises, a cat reminded me of a mouse more than a cat. I would prefer more cat-features that are distinctly cattish.

Geronimo Stilton: We'll Always Have Paris is a fun read for both boys and girls. I would also recommend this for reluctant readers of both genders. Geronimo Stilton is the narrator and credited author. He often clarifies a strange word or other needed information. Kids could write their own side boxes or panels, thus integrating one more sense into the learning process. This volume of Geronimo Stilton, and those before it, would be great additions to any first or second grade classroom library. The story is sure to peak their interest in the Eiffel Tower and Paris, plus when it is fun, memories are better. Those Eiffel Tower tidbits can start young minds thinking.

I have a grandson who enjoys reading graphic novels far more than regular books. These Graphic Geronimo Stilton books are ideal for him at the moment.
