Gr 9 Up—After Cole tricked her into feeding from him, Nikki has begun the process of turning into an Everliving. Now Nikki, Cole, and her boyfriend Jack must journey to the Underworld and try to stop her transformation, in this Persephone myth-inspired tale.
From Booklist
Picking up two weeks after the events of Everbound (2013), this book focuses on Nikki, who is determined to destroy the Everneath. Even though, thanks to Cole’s trickery, she is now an Everliving, Nikki is adamant that she would rather die than live at the expense of human forfeits. But her plans are in direct conflict with Cole’s, who still hopes to persuade her to join him in overthrowing the current queen of the Everneath and ruling it herself. Her ever-loyal boyfriend, Jack, who managed to escape the Tunnels of the Everneath, is torn between any plan that will help Nikki survive and Nikki’s desire to live life on her own terms. Fans of the series will not be disappointed as the story heads toward the inevitable showdown, although, as is often the case with a story that takes three books to build, it all seems over rather quickly. Fittingly, the resolution of the love triangle is the finest moment of the book, as it unflinchingly embraces the only solution that can plausibly bring this Persephone tale to a close. Loving, sad and ever true ending.
By Barbi
It's definitely a wonderful story when you even love the bad boy. The evil character of the series. When he turns out to be a good one after all. The whole series was wonderful. I hated to see it end. I loved it.

Boring, anti-climatic & safe conclusion to the series

SPOILERS AHEAD.
I don’t really hate this book. I NOTHING this book. Hate suggests emotional reaction that can stem from the heart or mind and neither my heart nor mind was in it. I can imagine majority of the readers enjoying it, but it simply did not work for me in ANY way.
Characters:
For the most part, I was on board with Nikki. She owned up to her mistakes, looked for solutions in ANY way possible, didn’t sulk and brood in the corners looking for self-pity and the love for Jack felt real and honest. These two truly have something special and I get it, Cole never stood a chance. In Evertrue, their “epic”, togetha forevaaaa romance takes a cringe worthy turn. If Nikki & Jack were on facebook, they would be THAT couple…the one that posts on each other’s walls things they could easily say in private, statuses involving Shakespearian’s declarations and “my girlfriend is my ride or die chick” type of stuff that most people eyeroll. Jack now has bigger muscles (duh) and makes a full transition into the Gary Sue I always suspected he was. They are one of those teenage couples that plan their lifetime together, like 99 years in advance. We all know those couples and we avoid them like a boring plague they are. Moving on.
Cole. Cole.Cole.Cole…. what am I to do with you? Who is Cole? Lets play an association game. Cole is the Damon Salvatore of the group. He is your Eric Northman…your Captain Hook (from Once upon a Time), your Darkling. He’s mysterious and sexy, makes your knees week and your loin area tingly, but deep in your heart and mind you just know HE IS BAD NEWS. He gets your attention with his intelligence, sarcasm and dry sense of humor. He could eye-sex you across the room, whisper sweet nothings OR he could drag you into Underworld to drain you of energy. He is by far, the most interesting aspect of the Everneath trilogy so when Ashton pulls the amnesia card in order to advance the story, neutering our bad boy of his guts, intelligence and personality, I was left with a bitter taste of disappointment and anger. This particular plot point rang false because it was a convenient, COP-OUT way to involve Cole with Jack & Nikki in some of the most AWKWARD encounters that made me look away in cringe and shame.
This journey to “destroy” Everneath was finalized in literally 10 pages. Nikki & Jack always seemed to know and find the right people with the necessary knowledge, books, tools and objects, all in the span of days while plotting to “nuke the whole thing.” Almost everything was handed to them on the silver plate and when a story reaches a critical point, Nikki & Jack “have faith it will get resolved” and what do you know? IT GETS RESOLVED. Centuries old Everneath itself is no longer explored and explained but treated as an anomaly, a thing to be destroyed with every Everliving in it. It reminded me of Elena Gilbert killing the Original Vampire Kol, thus ending an entire line of vampires he may have created. She didn’t even FLINCH. Same with Nikki & Jack. They make a lot of assumptions about Everneath and NOT once do they actually follow up or attempt to learn what will happen if they do destroy it. IGNORANCE is NOT an excuse. Their “facts” are PURELY circumstantial and pulled out randomly from the story to create a sense of pace. But the pacing is the least of the issues plaguing this poorly concluded story. The secondary characters are non-existent and only present to pave the way to convenience again, to hand them an object or piece of information. Without them, the goal to “destroy Everneath” would be fruitless because GODFORBID, Nikki & Jack have to face actual challenges.
For 3 books, we’ve been told BY COLE that Nikki’s survival of the Feed is a big deal. Enough for the evil Queen to get involved or Cole to build his entire existence around it, but this is never explored or explained again. Why? How? Why this girl in particular? It turns out Nikki was just “special.”
The REAL villain, you know the REALLY bad one who WILL kill you without remorse or thought, is present for like 3,4 pages despite her being mentioned throughout the entire trilogy as this dark entity clouding Nikki’s perfect life with Jack. We literally know NOTHING about her except that she’s “bad.” *rage*
The ending did NOT surprise me at all. I saw Cole’s death coming from a mile because the author never really gave him a romantic chance with Nikki, thus the only way to conclude his story was to kill him off…. I must say, that particular part was beautifully written and absolutely devastating. It was the FIRST time I felt as if I was present with Nikki & Cole as he withered away in dust. To me, this was a predictable, safe move by the author and I was honestly hoping she would demonstrate edge as she did in Everbound that knocked the air out of me. This was not the case for Evertrue. The author most definitely took an easy, convenient way out. For shame.
The book was boring & slow, filled with convenience, cringe-worthy awkwardness, mushy romance and neutered Cole. What a HUGE LET DOWN.

Wow

This is the third and final installment of the Everneath series and will have fans holding their breath. Nikki, Cole and Jack are all coming to a close, and for those of you popping in for the first time, pick up Everneath and Everbound for an epic love triangle and a really unique concept. Nikki adores and loves Jack, but Cole has tricked her into feeding off of him, which means she's beginning to turn into an Everling … she must feed or die. Now, anyone who knows me knows I always choose the "wrong" guy in the love triangle, and I have been a Cole fan since he first came onto the pages. So Cole fans … we must band together! I found the story fast-paced, the mythology intense, and Nikki, as always, is an interesting and noteworthy heroine.
