Why do I like this book so much?

Certainly I'm not in the targeted demographic. I'm a 30-something straight man who likes Star Wars and reads Steven king type books mostly. I watch family guy, Lost, Breaking Bad, Smallville, Arrow etc. I have read hunger games, Harry potter, anything by Joe Hill, and James Patterson thrillers (mostly because they are easy reads, I find his books predictable). I also read comics... Lots of comics. So why would someone in such a demographic like this book? Well, I read entertainment weekly, one of their ex writers wrote "Gone Girl" and for a solid year, you couldn't pick up an issue without the EW staff making a glaring recommendation. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but it probably never would have reached the heights it did, without the EW staff cheerleading squad.

So based on that, I gave "Gone Girl" a read, I found it pretty good, and when EW mentioned this book, it seemed similar. Apparently Amazon shoehorned me into this bucket because of my gone girl purchase. So I gave it a try. I have to say, I'm still confused about why I like it so much. I find the characters more interesting then the actual mystery that is supposed to be the draw, which is weird. Also, why would I like a book about a suburban soccer mom running around her daily life under a cloud of murder suspicion. Perhaps is because of my upper middle class suburban upbringing? Maybe, but I think ultimately, it's an easy read with real characters... Relatable ones. I never find myself rolling my eyes, or simply picking it up and reading a few pages and being lost.

So I don't know. I just like this book. I think it's great, I'm glad I read it, and I now have a new author to follow. This review probably will help no one but, but if I can like it, I think anyone would.

A big change from Murder 101 series!

Wow, as a reader of Ms. Barbieri's Murder 101 series, I was totally unprepared for how much darker this book would be. Maeve Conlon is struggling with owning a business, a father with Alzheimer's and two teenage daughters. Her ex-husband left her and married a woman who supposedly was her friend. Now, the murder of her cousin Sean has opened a can of worms in Maeve's life as the cops look at her father as a possible suspect.

Maeve is really sort of an anti-hero. From the beginning of the book Maeve is obviously antagonistic towards Sean and as the book goes on we discover why. Maeve realizes that one of her customers is abusing his wife and children and she embarks on a campaign to make him stop, ultimately taking a drastic step to protect the victims. Maeve is also skirting the edges of trouble with the detective who is investigating Sean's murder in her efforts to exonerate her father.

This is the first book in a series and it is a heck of a beginning. From the beginning to the end. it is a page turner and I was fascinated to see what would happen next. It will be interesting to see how this character develops.

Lies on top of Lies

Maeve Conlon has a lot on her plate. Between running her bakery, dealing with her ex-husband and uncooperative teenage daughters, and trying to keep her father from wandering away from his nursing home, Maeve barely has time for herself. She certainly doesn't have the time to deal with the death of her cousin, Sean, though there was no love lost between them. However when the police begin looking at her father as a suspect in Sean's murder, she's forced to clear his name and deal with memories she'd rather keep buried.

I think what impressed me most about Once Upon a Lie was the characters. The secondary characters--like Maeve's father Jack, her friend/employee Jo, and all of the town gossips--gave the story its depth. The main character can only do so much to create the sense of her world, so the other players make a world of difference.

There was just the right balance of mystery, deceit, and drama to keep me turning the pages. The difference between the setting of suburbia--where everything is sunshine and roses--and the darkness that oozes from all of the secrets put me on edge. It does justice to the thriller genre.

My only complaint about the book has to do with one of Maeve's secrets, so I can't exactly divulge it. I'll just say that one of the secrets let me down as I've seen it done way too many times in the crime/mystery/thriller genre. This book was so well written that that secret doesn't do the story justice.

I'd recommend this book to thriller junkies, anyone who loves a good, dark mystery.

Olivia really is the star of this show. Bravo!

If your child loves Olivia (and who doesn't?) this latest adventure will be a hit in your household. Olivia is her rambunctious and indomitable self but she shows in this story that she is also very forgiving and also extremely creative. I love the way she turns the trash cans into drums and doesn't pause to be upset about the accident that happens back stage. Good for you, Olivia!

There's a real storyline here and not a sparse narrative like you find in so many picture books so you are getting value for your money here as well. Bravo!

A wonderful and satisfying ending to the trilogy

I've been waiting for a year to read Infinite by Jodi Meadows, the last installment of the Incarnate trilogy. I wasn't disappointed. I received this ARC from Harper Publishers in exchange for an honest review. I award this book 4.5 stars.

Infinite by Jodi Meadows takes off where Asunder left us. We are taken right to the action with Ana and Sam, as they frantically try to figure out how to prevent Janan for ascending. Ultimately, a small group of them have to leave Heart to try to figure out their ultimate plan. Will Ana sacrifice her chance for love and happiness for the greater good of all souls alike?

I don't want to say too much in the synopsis, because this final installment is chock full of really great reveals that all of us have been wondering for ages. Let's just say that every character you've loved in this series gets their due. Ana really comes into her own, Sam continues to be one of the most loveable characters in YA, and other side characters come in different forms, which really enhances the world building.

I really felt the book came into it's own around page 100. It was good up to then, don't get me wrong, but after that point, it became increasingly difficult to put it down. I loved how we got to learn more about dragons, sylphs, and phoenixes. There is one particular reveal that I loved because I never suspected there was more to it. But Meadows never forgot, and it's pretty amazing.

I really liked the ending, but it almost seemed too perfect. That said, it was really satisfying and beautifully written, so I just went with it. If a writer can get my doubting self to just disappear, that's pretty awesome.

In a world chock full of ending YA trilogies, this one stands out. It started strong and ended stronger, with a great middle installment, so as a whole, it was really great. This is hard to do. I feel like several trilogies have failed on one book or another, or disappointed me in some way. The Incarnate trilogy didn't, and I'm thrilled to add it to my very short list of must read trilogies.

Overall, a fantastic and worthy ending to the Incarnate trilogy with great characters, prose, and plot twists. Everyone needs to get their hands on this book as soon as it comes out!

My least favorite of the series -- I think I'm in the minority when I say this book wasn't all that great

I think it was time to finish reading this trilogy. For some reason, when I don't want a series to end, I hold off on reading the last book. INFINITE is the bitter-sweet ending to Jodi Meadow's debut trilogy and while I enjoyed how it all came together, I don't think I'm fully satisfied with this ending. I think I came in with too many expectations and the novel kind of fell short. I absolutely loved the first book, INCARNATE, but I have to say this third book is my least favorite of the series.

The mythology Jodi Meadows created captivated me from the very beginning of book 1 because it felt mysterious. It probably felt that way because we didn't know much about it. Truthfully, now that all is revealed in this last installment, everything seems far-fetched and labored. It's almost as if the author didn't plan this far ahead and needed an ending, and simply wrote what first came to mind. In most of the novel we see the main characters travelling to the far reaches of their homeland. The constant walking and wandering in hopes of finding a way to stop Janan, the antagonist, is treacherous to read. I simply had a hard time getting through this part of the novel.

Also, while travelling, it felt like Ana, the main character, just wanted to see how many species she could communicate with. Everyone is afraid of being burnt by the sylph? No problem, let's just try to talk to them when they approach and hopefully not burn to death. You're found with a couple of centaur kids and their herd thinks you've kidnapped them? That's okay too because you can put a smile on and listen to music as their parents come to get them. The dragons are big and scary but you absolutely think they can understand you, even if your boyfriend has been eaten or killed by them 35 times in the last thousand years. Ana's quest to befriend every creature seems immature, and the way she takes chances doesn't resonate with me. You don't confront dragons for the first time by calling them names and throwing rocks at them, especially if they can kill you with one bite or one stomp. That is definitely not the definition to making friends. And sorry Ana. You can't blame that on you're weird, unique and tormented childhood.

Another issue I had a hard getting over is the seemingly everlasting batteries in the SEDs, which are either a large smart phone or a small tablet. The characters are gone for weeks on end, with no electricity but these devices seem to last forever. Personally, I have to charge my phone every night, especially if I use it to listen to music all day and all night long. It's just a quirk I had a hard time dealing with because unless I missed the explanation that said it was solar powered or something, it's just not realistic. (If someone can prove me wrong and point out to me why these devices never "die", please let me know!)

One thing Meadows did right however, is create bad guys that are easy to hate. Those who worship Janan have almost created a religion surrounding this attention seeking god-like character. It feels very real how this "religion" becomes fanatical when some leaders preach constant hate for Newsouls, humans that are born without being reincarnated. The hate and the aggression is very scary and resonates with current affairs where some Islamic extremists go to the extent of killing those who are different and those who can't be converted. (Please note I'm making this comparison but I don't want anyone to take offense. I'm aware the two situations are completely different.) Another positive aspect is that Ms. Meadows knows how to write a good kissing scene. While there might have been a bit too many in this novel and they got repetitive, I have to admit the relationship between Ana and Sam is, as always, exceptional.

Overall, I think I'm in the minority when I say this book wasn't all that great. The epilogue was "okay", even though I did have one samll issue with it, which I'm not going to mention because that would mean a major spoiler. I kind of expected it to end this way, but I just wanted to be wowed! Regrettably, I wasn't. I'm still glad I've read this series because it was a wonderful ride, for the most part. For a debut trilogy, it was a huge undertaking. I think Jodi Meadows has a wonderful writing future ahead of her and I think we can only expect her work to get better in time. I look forward to her next series, which comes out in early 2015.

Infinite was, quite simply, amazing.

Infinite was, quite simply, amazing. It broke my heart, but it also put the shattered pieces back together again (and this happened multiple times over). But the best part? It enticed me into falling completely in love with this series and these characters all over again. That's certainly no small feat, so I've got to hand it to Jodi Meadows for writing what appears to be the right ending for her story.

There are so many wonderful things about the way Jodi tells the rest of Ana's story in Infinite. There are nuances in every decision, emotions wrapped up in all these choices the characters face. With the stakes so high and time so short, it truly becomes a question of life or death for Ana, her friends and even her enemies.

This, in fact, is what makes the series so meaningful to me. It's not just a story about a newsoul named Ana, who discovers friendship, romance and how she fits into this world she's in. It's also a reflection on the importance of what's happened in the past, the power of the choices being made in the present and the uncertainty (and hope) that can lie in the future. This where the Newsoul series is most effective at being engaging, as it touches on concepts we've all reflected on at some point.

Readers are reunited with Ana, Sam and many other characters. Their experiences are a mix of happy and sweet, hard and hurtful, but it feels good to be able to make this important journey with them up until the end. With Incarnate and Asunder, Jodi succeeded in carving a place in my heart for the characters I fell in love with; in Infinite, these characters friends simply settle in and make themselves more at home.

Jodi also triumphs at her introduction of the wider world surrounding Range and Heart. It's filled with strange territory, including fantastical creatures (like centuars, trolls, sylph and dragons) which we've heard much about but have never seen for long periods of time. The descriptions, the experiences and the sheer necessity of Ana's journey out of Range are extremely well-done so as to blend seamlessly with the previous parts of Ana's story.

In fact, this is one of the best things about Infinite - the juxtaposing of the familiar (like Ana, Sam, and other characters or creatures we know) with the unfamiliar (like the area outside of Range, the uncertainty of what will happen on Soul Night, etc). It's a theme that's surfaced in all three novels, and also a clever tip of the hat to Ana herself.

Jodi does an impressive job of keeping her readers in the dark until things are about to go down, filling Infinite with unexpected twists. Plus, she keeps her characters and their emotional experiences feeling authentic. After having read all three novels (and the novella), it's safe to conclude that this is a series I'd highly recommend.

If you've yet to start, consider this your polite invitation to do that right now. And if you have, consider this your reassurance that Jodi Meadows will end this series in a way that you're going to appreciate.

I don’t know what I was expecting from this. More action? Less romance? More assassinations? Less whining about having to save each other? Whatever it was, I didn’t get it. What I didn’t get in Mind Games are almost all here in this one. And I don’t mean that in a good way. The relationship between Kiersten White and I is so iffy that I’m scared to read her other series for the sake that I will hate it more than I do this one.

In Perfect Lies Fia’s once odd yet exciting mind turns for the worst. Instead of sounding unique and enticing, I found that Kiersten White tried too hard and made her extremely unstable and even worse, annoying. Three taps is fine, it sticks and things usually go better in three but four sounds awkward and I found myself having to slow down while reading one of Fia’s repetitions just so that I got it right (It was annoying annoying annoying ANNOYING to do so.) On another note, I still had a hard time with the characters except for Annie. The rest felt flimsy and pathetic, not adding anything to story but take up space. A relationship that I used to enjoy (Fia’s and Adam’s) is completely disregarded and is just non-existent in this one.

The only that stayed the same for the best are the short chapters. I flew through this novel in less than a day. And I actually liked the idea of the setting because it’s exotic and dangerous and a little intense unfortunately, the execution of it is sloppy at best. Like I said before, Annie is the only character that I liked. I liked her because, even though she’s still a whiny little brat, she’s grows a little and her chapters are well described and I had a much easier time connecting to her than I would have imagined. While reading, I found myself skimming Fia’s chapters just to read about Annie and her life.

All in all, Perfect Lies is an odd book. Hell, this series is odd and definitely not in a good way. I don’t recommend this to anyone unless you don’t mind a series that doesn’t make too much sense, weirdly entertaining but too annoying to care writing, and sloppily done execution for just about everything then maybe you’ll enjoy this novel. If not, stay far far far FAR away from this series. Just stare at the beautiful covers from a distance.

Really Enjoyed!

This is book 2 so there will be spoilers for book 1!! I finished this book about 3 days ago and its taken me this long to figure out what to say about Perfect Lies. After Fia faked Annies death and left she feels freer. Annie though is still waiting for Fia to come back. She is trying to make a go of it with the Lerner group and do all she can to bring down the Keane Foundation.
Fia mean while has her own plan. She and James are trying not to think of the plan to takedown Jamess' father so the Readers can't see. She is trying to become indispensable so as to get closer to Keane and earn his thrust.
Im not going to say much more about the plot because of spoilers but I will say that this was much better than book 1, more action and suspense.
Annie in this book was a lot better. In book 1 she was meek and always relied on others but thankfully in Perfect Lies she start to realise she needs to take action. She wants to train in self defense and wants to get involved more with Lerner. She pushes her vision to the max since she is the only one able to see Fia but what she sees terrifies her. Fia seems to be descending into something Annie doesn't know. I really liked the fact Annie grew and became so much more than she was.
Now onto Fia. Never have I read a character that is so complex, unique and disturbing! Reading her thoughts was like ... I don't even know how to describe it. Her thoughts go a mile a minute and never stop. In book 1 we see how broken she became because of what she was forced to do but in Perfect Lies she is no longer the strong girl who is broken, she now seems to be right on the edge of insanity. She is so erratic and beyond broken that its hard to see her ever becoming Fia again. Her thoughts are constantly dark and dangerous and she doesnt seem to be able to thrust her instincts anymore. She finds it hard to tell right from wrong. My heart broke for her!!
James! Oh James, you changed so much in this book and not for the better!! He was so considerate and nice in book 1 but now he seems to be turning into his father. He seems to care for Fia but we never can tell if its true or not. He is keeping secrets from her and seems to manipulate her any chance he can get, no matter the consequences to Fia. I so didn't like him and my poor heart broke again for Fia.
Overall Perfect Lies was an impressive sequel. We get more of everything, more action, more Annie, more suspense and more intrigue. Its like nothing Ive read before and can safely say you should read it. While the writing style takes a while to get used to, the way the author can make you feel the damage done to Fia is amazing. You really feel for both girls but especially Fia. She has so many flaws and is so damaged but you still find yourself rooting for her and hoping she finds happiness. I loved that it had Annie and Fia POVs because you can see how much they mean to each other and their bond is so strong. For such a short book it definitely packs a punch.

Not as Good as Previous Book

Perfect Lies was a good read, but it wasn't as good as its predecessor.

A MISSING PIECE

I don't know what it was exactly, but there was something missing to this book—to the characters, to the plot, to the feel of the story in general. Just as Fia's instincts told her when something was wrong, mine were telling me that there was an important piece was missing from the book. Maybe it was mostly the plot. Most of the time, it didn't feel well developed. The whole conflict with Keane and the characters trying to take him down/hide from him/etc. was a bit fuzzy. The reasons WHY behind the conflict weren't dived into very much, so that part of the story didn't feel well done. Also, there was something off about many of the characters as well as the ending, but I couldn't place my finger on it.

ANNIE

At first, her POV felt bland. She just didn't feel like a very interesting character, and there wasn't much excitement happening on her side of the story. As I got further in the book, though, I steadily grew to love her POV—even more than Fia's. Honestly, part of that has to do with Cole. He was a great character! I loved his role in helping Annie become stronger.

FIA

Fia's POV was definitely interesting—borderline annoying, but still a very good one. She felt like the most developed part of the entire story. Fia had so so so many flaws, which made her very interesting to read about. The girl could barely hold herself together—between feeling guilty about killing people, keeping secrets from everyone, and protecting her sister, she had to deal with a lot. She was my favorite character.

OVERALL

Perfect Lies could've been better. It could've had that missing piece that I was looking for, but because it didn't, it didn't end the duology as strongly as it could have. However, like I said, the book wasn't bad. It was still and interesting read with a really cool layout (alternating POVs and past/present) and great main characters, and I do recommend it if you're interested in reading it.

About the Author
David Redish is a professor of Neuroscience at the University of Minnesota. Trained in
computational, theoretical, and experimental neuroscience, he has contributed to our
understanding of decision-making and cognition. Dr. Redish received a dual-degree BA
in the writing seminars (poetry, plays) and computer science from The Johns Hopkins
University, and his PhD in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University.

A Book that gets into your Brain

When beginning a “popular press” book on the topic of neuroscience one cannot be sure what they are getting themselves into. Just the idea of reading a book about the subject can scare some. Three pages into Dr. David Radish’s new book The Mind within the Brain, I was delighted with my book choice. Radish is a neuroscientist, at the University of Minnesota, who researches the contribution of learning and memory to behavior. He has authored other works like Beyond the Cognitive Map and has a background in writing, computer science and neuroscience. Dr. Radish’s new book concisely addresses the mysterious topic of free will. Because of his diverse background, the author is able to provide unique insight into how humans make decisions.

The main text of the book is kept brief, to the point and entertaining but the footnotes and appendixes include additional stories by Redish explaining in depth neuroscience concepts. Average readers interested in the topic can therefore enjoy the book while someone who wants to expand their knowledge can take advantage of the meticulous science. The book is broken up into 4 sections: “decisions and the brain”, “decision making systems”, “brain with a mind of its own” and “the human condition.” After each section additional peer reviewed articles are cited so that if you find something interesting, you can get more in depth information on the topic.
The first section begins with Redish’s basic definition of a decision: “the selection of actions.” The brain is compared to a complex decision-making machine based on negative feedback. He writes about how this machine’s choices are based on values determined by multiple interacting systems including reflexive, pavalonian, deliberative, and habit based. The second part of the book provides an overview of these systems. . The reflexive system is the simplest system because it is hardwired into our body and can react in milliseconds to a danger or event. The pavalonian system includes prewired responses to stimuli that have been learned over evolution. You can learn what predicts the outcome but cannot change it. The deliberative system is one that involves one-time selections. This system is most associated with being human; it is very flexible and involves planning and deliberation, but requires more time then the others. Finally, the habit-based system is simple but inflexible once created. It determines the best actions to take based on past experiences and memories. Once an association arises this system can recognize a situation again and act quickly with the learned response. In addition to these four systems other components are needed: a physical action system, which can physically take the action that’s been chosen, a perceptual system that can recognize objects around us, a situational recognition system that can categorize stimuli into situations, a motivational system that identifies what we want and what we are willing to do for it. Together these sub systems offer the support for the decision-making mechanisms to work.

Redish begins the third section of the book by proposing that the mind and brain are the same thing but that the components process information differently leading to vulnerabilities in the decision making system. He terms these vulnerabilities as “failure points.” A thermostat is used as an example to represent something that can determine what needs to happen and then be initiated. Just like a thermostat our decision making complex can malfunction, and show a version of reality that may be inaccurate. Addiction, gambling issues, and post-traumatic stress disorder are all malfunctions. The final section of the book explores what makes us human, including the topics of morality and free will. Free will is looked at again in the last chapter as Redish discusses the wild area of advanced robotics where the robots can think for themselves.

Redish has hit a homerun with The Mind within the Brain. The book is well organized and has a nice flow that makes it easy to read. It is definitely a plus that the author has background in writing because it can be hard to simplify difficult concepts into words that non-PhD’s can understand. His use of humor and personal stories keeps the reader entertained in a subject matter that could be dry. He begins each chapter with a paragraph or two that gets you interested in the topic by showing everyday examples of what is about to be discussed. During each chapter, complex explanations are always given real life comparisons. For example, the “decision making machine” is discussed in relation to a Toyota Prius because each have many parts and just like the brain they are all trying to accomplish the same goal. These analogies really help the reader gain a better understanding of the topic.

I chose this book because I was intrigued by how the brain makes decisions; I have always wondered why I do certain things. I was able to obtain all of the answers that I wanted on human decision making. Anyone who has ever been curious about a decision or the process in the brain that led to it would find answers here! Very powerful. 5 stars for Redish, 5 stars for The Mind within the Brain.

Don't speculate. Read this book!

Synthesizing several different lines of research and development relevant to the mind and behavior, David Redish presents a vastly more complex and powerful model than anything else I have encountered. In particular, no one who has not read this book should ever be allowed to speculate on "free will" again.

Good companion for first solid state course

I used this book as a companion to the standard Ashcroft & Mermin text in a graduate physics course. As other reviewers have pointed out, the approach of Hook is quite different, which in my case was of great benefit. First, the math in this book is not as sophisticated as Ashcroft's. The author prefers 1- or 2-dimentional derivations to Ashcroft's generalized ones using vector functions and matrix equations. Second, the explanations provide a fundamental understanding to a student, while Aschroft's writing is dense and at time can sound like a theory paper about mathematics. I challenge anyone to find a mention of Heisenberg uncertainty principle - a fundamental property of waves - in Ashcroft's chapter on lattice vibrations. Hook talks about it in the introduction of his treatment. Finally, this is one of the few solid state books out there that has ANSWERS to all the problems. This is very valuable when you need examples and to test your knowledge before an exam.

a different, but worthwhile, approach � try before buying

When Professor Hall lectured Solid State Physics on an undergraduate course at Manchester he deviated from the approach taken in the book, which surprised me somewhat. I'll come back to this later.
The book is very sound if somewhat idiosyncratic. In particular, I found that Hook and Hall used explanatory devices quite different to those followed by my other lecturers, and by most other textbooks. This could be a good or a bad thing, depending on your mental aptitude and/or fondness for their exposition.
I suspect the reason Hall used a different approach in lectures was to tie in with the way we learnt related subject material at Manchester (solid state being just one of three or four compulsory 2nd year courses dealing with atomic and sub-atomic matter).
This is not to say that anything in the book is misleading. It's very well-written and comprehensive, and if this is a subject that you want to learn more about than you can in general texts, I can recommend it as it helped me on several occasions. Perhaps spend half an hour with it in the library or bookshop before buying.
I could not find a better text on solid state at this level when I took my degree in 1995 (IIRC the first edition of Hook-Hall was 1970's, the second early 90's), but that situation may have changed by now.

Not great, but maybe one of the better choices based on what's available

First, the disclaimer: I'm writing this as an instructor of an undergraduate course in Solid State Physics. The standard text of Kittel is a fantastic reference after a course that uses it, but is so terse in descriptions that it's a tough haul for a first course. I tried using the Physics and Chemistry of Solids by Elliot, which was too verbose. On this spectrum, Hook and Hall is in the middle -- not too long to be overwhelming, but generally fairly readable text along the way. The text is not great, but not bad at all. (I would have tried a text by Chrisman if it was still in print.)

In terms of subject matter, the book largely follows the standard route (crystal structures, diffraction, phonons, electrons, semiconductors, then more specialized topics). The one big caveat is that reciprocal space is deferred until late in the book. While there were a couple times when I wanted to bring up reciprocal space earlier in the course (e.g. diffraction), it avoided the usual period early in the semester trying to figure out this abstract concept without knowing what good it is.

There is yet to be a text for an undergraduate course that matches the role Ashcroft and Mermin played for a graduate solid state course -- coherent, intuitive, and mathematically rigorous. While I can envision a better text, I have yet to find it. I would be likely to use this text again based on what I've seen that's available.

Man the Preacher is one of the creepiest characters in horror fiction today.

They just keep getting better.

Damned good book. I love the Jeremiah Hunt Chronicle, and was floored by the first one. The second one was pretty amazing and I wasn't sure how he could really top it, but the third book kicked all kinds of ass.

The main character is Jeremiah Hunt, and as explained in all 3 books, his daughter was kidnapped. He spent years looking with no luck and slowly going insane until he ran across an old preacher with no eyes, who told him he could help him find her. Well, turns out taking the mysterious old non eyed Preacher's advice was not a good thing. He performs a spell that while allowing him to see all the hidden things in the world (ghosts, goblins, wee wickie beasties) it has the unfortunate side effect of burning out his eyes (and bringing him to the notice of the things we don't see).

The first book has him looking for his daughter and getting caught up in a murder spree. The second book has him in New Orleans attempting to figure out what a strange warning was about, and the third book has him in L.A. hiding out from the events of the first 2 books.

It's weird to say that the book is well written because of the world building, when you are talking about a character that is functionally blind 90% of the time, but Nassise really nails it. It's not often someone actually writes about New Orleans and manages to actually make the city feel real as opposed to the way it's presented in the movies. He does it again with L.A., and focuses less on the actual street names and "went here to this place and got food" sort of mentions, and focused more on the motivations of the various characters.

It's a hell of a ride, and you do get to learn a bit more about The Preacher as he's called. He is one creepy son of a bitch. Weirdly, he never really does anything in the books. Most of the creepy baddies in books tend to kill various people, children, dogs, act rapey, deranged or just plain evil. Preacher doesn't do that, he's just creepy all by himself. He helps (most of the time), but holy crap this guy is just unnerving. It's not often a character shows up and I get chills, but this one makes me feel like I'm walking into a dentist office in silent hill.

If you liked the first book, you'll love this one.

Another action-packed hit!

Another hit! This addition starts off fast and furious and continues until the end of the book.

By page 16 I was completely sucked in. Loved this:

”I had no idea who these people were, but it was a safe assumption that they didn’t have my best interests at heart; you didn’t kick in a door of a man’s motel room to invite him out for a venti caramel macchiato.”

Hunt has a wonderful sense of humor that I find ironically hilarious.

I missed Denise and Dmitri, but thought it worked well with them coming in at the end of the story. I was glad to see Scream and Whisper again, great characters. The new “bad guys” were the usual suspects but a bit more interesting. Seeing how Hunt has progressed with the use of his sight is an interesting part of the storyline, I’m looking forward to learning more about how he develops that talent. Also, the ending of the story leaves me wanting more, without being a cliffhanger. A big thank you to the author for that, yes there are new storylines to look forward to but this story had an ending as well.

There are many surprises in book three. A couple that I was surprised by, or felt were small hiccups were that Hunt took so long to figure out what Durante was up to and that he trusted Ilyana??? What was up with that? Those two things made this a 4 1/2 star book but because of all the new and interesting directions it goes, I bumped it up to 5 stars.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys fast well paced, action, mystery, horror and fantasy all rolled up into a well written interesting story. You can read this as a stand alone book, because the author does a fantastic job of giving the reader enough information while at the same time not repeating too many things for the readers who have read the other two books. Although, I would recommend that you read the other two because all three of books in this series are fantastic.

Jeremiah Hunt has fled New Orleans after doing everything he could to save Denise Clearwater, the beautiful Gifted woman who is now part of his life. He’s hiding out in L.A. until Whisper comes to him and tells him to run. Hunt isn’t fast enough and is captured by Carlos Fuentes, the Magister of L.A. who wants all the power he can grab for himself. He blackmails Hunt into helping him find the pieces of the Key to the Bone Gate, which will open a doorway into Hell. The Preacher also wants the Key and Hunt will do anything to save Denise and Dmitri from both Fuentes and the Preacher.

I love how the author doesn’t pull any punches and doesn’t give his characters the easy way out. I have truly fallen in love with this series! Seeing the world through Hunt’s eyes (or lack thereof) is a refreshing way of world-building and gives a different perspective on how the world truly works. The magick, mystery, and mayhem will keep you on the edge of your seat. As much as I couldn’t wait to find out what happened I savored each page WATCHER OF THE DARK because I didn’t want the book to end! WATCHER OF THE DARK, beautifully haunting and grim, is the best of the Jeremiah Hunt Chronicles to date and it will burrow into your very soul!
