PreS-Gr 2—Rupert the rooster is not an early bird. His friend, Sherman the sheep, offers to fill in for him and "cock-a-doodle-doo" in the morning. When Sherman awakes in the middle of the night and thinks it is the morning, he doesn't want to disappoint his pal. Fearing his call wasn't loud enough, he brings in a flock of sheep as reinforcements and the deafening blast of "BAAB-BAABA-BA-A-A" wakes up everyone on the farm. Soon, bleary-eyed children are waiting for the school bus in the dark, Farmer Tim is knocked over by animals who can't see him, and the cows wind up gobbling all the pancakes in the kitchen. Surveying the chaos, Rupert realizes that "Waking everybody up is a special job. And it's MY job." New Yorker artist Twohy's ink and felt pen cartoons show Rupert's comical antics, from setting six alarm clocks to bolting upright in bed with fuzzy slippers and a sleep cap tied over his ears. With superb pacing and laugh-out-loud illustrations, this book is something to crow about.—Linda Ludke, London Public Library, Ontario, Canada

From Booklist
Rupert the rooster is just not a morning person. He doesn’t think it’s fair that he has to get up before everyone else, and who can blame him? Certainly not his pal Sherman the sheep, who volunteers to take over Rupert’s job. Unfortunately, Sherman is so stressed out about getting up early that he bolts awake in the middle of the night and enlists his whole herd to holler out BAABA-BAABA-BA-A-A-A-AH! Everyone awakens with a jolt, and the farmer’s family and animals all attempt to go through their morning routines, half asleep and in the dark. Pure chaos ensues: the cows are in the kitchen, the farmer is in the horse trough, and it’s all Rupert’s fault. Sharp-lined, cartoonish ink drawings with lots of color complement the action-packed text. It seems a shame that Rupert is the only man for the job, due solely to his species, but he resumes his duties cheerfully and with a newfound sense of responsibility. Combine this with Bawk and Roll (2012), by Tammi Sauer and Ethan Long’s Pig Has a Plan (2012) for a lively farm-themed storytime. Grades K-2. --Paula Willey

Review
Rupert the Rooster just wants to sleep in!

Every morning, Rupert sets six alarm clocks and hides them around his room in the barn. That way, by the time he finds all six ringing clocks and turns them off, he will be awake enough to see the sun, crow and wake everyone on Farmer Tim’s farm. Rupert just hates getting up early. When he complains to his best friend, Sherman the sheep, Sherman volunteers to do the crowing as long as Rupert teaches him how. After a lesson, Rupert goes to sleep with his slippers over his ears. Sherman sets the alarm clocks for himself…but he has a nightmare in which he doesn’t get up in time. Waking in the middle of the night, he crows and then panics when he is not loud enough to rouse the others. He gets his entire family to bleat with him, and the farm wakes up early, with disastrous results. As Rupert watches the chaos, he vows to always do his own important job himself. Author and New Yorker cartoonist Twohy delivers a fine addition to the confused-farm-critter canon with this tale of lazy Rupert who learns a little rooster-ly responsibility. The cartoon watercolors enhance the silliness of the tale.

Preschoolers will bleat for a repeat. (Picture book. 3-7) (Kirkus)

Twohy (Outfoxed) starts with a simple barnyard premise—Rupert the rooster objects to having to wake up early every morning—and follows it to its catastrophic conclusion, firing up the pages with plenty of physical comedy. After Rupert’s friend Sherman the sheep offers to take on the waking-up duties, Rupert prepares for a luxurious late morning. Instead, the entire farm is awakened in the middle of the night by a mighty chorus of sheep, recruited by Sherman to augment his own feeble baaing. Chaos ensues as the farmer’s children droop like zombies at the bus stop, and “the cows walked right past the milking barn, clomped into the kitchen, and ate all the pancakes!” Extra laughs come from Twohy’s focus on his characters’ neuroses. Rupert whines, “I need a lot more rest than most roosters,” and, in a psychologically nuanced plot twist, Sherman wakes up early because he dreams that the sun is already up and he’s overslept. A predictable ending doesn’t detract from the energy of Twohy’s story, which will easily rouse restless readaloud listeners. Ages 4–8. Agent: Elena Giovinazzo, Pippin Properties. (Feb.) Rupert is a rooster who does not like to get up early. So, he teaches his early rising friend, Sherman, the sheep, to crow for him. Sherman is nervous about his first day and has a dream that gets him up in the middle of the night, thinking it is morning. He wakes up everyone on the farm and, of course, they think it is time to start a new day. Sleepy heads will get a kick out of Rupert's dilemma.
By Bob Walch
This rooster's solution to finding a way to sleep in one morning is very funny. Enlisting the help of his friend Sherman, a well meaning sheep, doesn't solve this sleep deprived rooster's problem. In fact, the results are quite hilarious. But the second part of the story is even better. Rupert goes back to doing what a rooster is suppose to do but Sherman and his buddies launch new careers.

An amusing story coupled with excellent illustrations (Twohy is a cartoonist for the New Yorker magazine), make this a very appealing picture book for both young readers and their parents. There's probably a subtle message embedded in this story too but I think if you just have a good laugh that should suffice!

Great Condition and Contents
By Envol
The condition of the book shipped was very good, looking like new, as promised. As for the book itself, my 3.5 year old daughter loved the story about the rooster that was too tired to do his job, and likes to get into "book club discussions" about it. Highly recommend.

The Good Boy, by Theresa Schwegel

Edgar award winner Theresa Schwegel returns with The Good Boy, her most dramatic and emotional novel to date, a family epic that combines the hard-boiled grit of her acclaimed police thrillers with an intimate portrait of a young boy trying to follow his heart in an often heartless city.

For Officer Pete Murphy, K9 duty is as much a punishment as a promotion. When a shaky arrest reignites a recent scandal and triggers a multimillion-dollar lawsuit, all eyes are on Pete as the department braces for another media firestorm.

Meanwhile, Pete's eleven-year-old son Joel feels invisible. His parents hardly notice him—unless they're arguing about his "behavioral problems"—and his older sister, McKenna, has lately disappeared into the strange and frightening world of teenagerdom. About the only friend Joel has left is Butchie, his father's furry "partner."

When Joel and Butchie follow McKenna to a neighborhood bully's party, illegal activity kicks the dog's police training into overdrive, and soon the duo are on the run, navigating the streets of Chicago as they try to stay one step ahead of the bad guys—bad guys who may have a very personal interest in getting some payback on Officer Pete Murphy.

Review

“A terrific piece of crime writing--propulsive action paired with the authentic sounds of a city on the make. Theresa Schwegel's ear for dialogue is pitch-perfect--from the station house to the streets, from cops to robbers to teens, Schwegel serves up fully-realized characters who pop off the page. An essential read.” ―GILLIAN FLYNN

“A vivid, nuanced, and emotional tale told in prose that crackles with electricity. The characters are real, their world is our own, and their stories the kind that linger long after the last page is turned. At once a thriller and a beautifully rendered family story, it simply won't disappoint.” ―MICHAEL KORYTA

“A brooding, world-wise, humane piece of crime fiction…Readers who respond to it will find the book lingering in their minds longer than most.” ―USA Today

“Theresa Schwegel is an Edgar-winning crime writer whose Chicago police stories are more nuanced and impassioned than most books of their genre….For all the dog books currently in vogue, it's hard to beat this one for canine verisimilitude or talent….The dog elevates a fairly conventional detective story into something much more lovable.” ―The New York Times

“[A] nail-biter…The reader will empathize with everyone from Pete, who has his heart in the right place but makes several wrong turns, to Butch, who never speaks yet says volumes.” ―Publisher's Weekly

Well worth your time and attention
By Bookreporter
THE GOOD BOY makes demands of its readers. Author Theresa Schwegel drops you in the middle of a quietly simmering pot of domestic disaster straight from the jump. Then she works her way backwards in fits and starts and drops as the back story moves, somewhat at a snail’s pace, to catch up with the very immediate, suspenseful present.

Pete Murphy is a Chicago police officer who is assigned to the K9 unit, a position that he considers to be a punishment as opposed to a promotion. There is a reason for this: Murphy was part of a street hassle that also involved a bit of scandal that in turn led to a somewhat public embarrassment. The resulting fallout led to Murphy and his family having to give up their mortgaged home and “downsizing” to a well-used rental in a less desirable neighborhood. His family is less than able to stand the strain. Wife Sarah has some definite issues of her own --- some understandable, others not so much --- and spends a good deal of the book standing on Murphy’s last nerve. Teenage daughter McKenna is teetering into the world of full-blown adolescence, a difficult enough transformation without the additional uprooting and incidental publicity that arose from her father’s situation.

However, it is 11-year-old Joel who feels the brunt of the family’s emotional trauma. Joel is brilliant, possessed of a remarkable memory while exhibiting some signs that he might be on the autism spectrum, though this is never specifically addressed. Then there is Butch, Murphy’s canine partner, who is undoubtedly the most emotionally stable of the ensemble. Murphy and Butch surely have an emotional bond, but it is Joel who is truly attached to the dog.

So it is that two things occur in rapid order in THE GOOD BOY. The first is that Murphy’s participation in a routine traffic stop puts him back into the very unfavorable spotlight of publicity while reopening public memory of his involvement in the prior incident that resulted in his fall from grace. The other is that McKenna’s association with bad companions --- you can see it coming for several chapters --- culminates in her sneaking out of the house to go to what used to be called a “wild party.” Joel, who is concerned for his older sister, takes Butch and follows her. When several trouble points converge and things go badly wrong, Joel and Butch find themselves on the run through the mean streets of Chicago, as Joel attempts to reach the one adult in a position of power who will listen to him. It is this sojourn across several miles of the city that forms the meat and heart of THE GOOD BOY.

Joel is not what one would call street-smart in the classic sense, but he knows enough to get by. His greatest strength, however, is that he looks after Butch at his own expense; Butch, of course, returns the favor, thus the two of them are able to traverse the city by hook and crook as Joel attempts to reach his unlikely destination. Meanwhile, Joel’s parents are understandably frantic, even as the family threatens to capsize under the pressure of their other problems. Murphy begins a desperate search through the darkest and seediest recesses of the city, pursuing a slim trail that he hopes will lead to his son, little knowing that he actually may be putting himself and his loved ones into even greater jeopardy.

THE GOOD BOY is reminiscent of a number of tales --- THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY (the book, not the Disney movies) and The Warriors (the movie, not the book) --- but is very much its own story. While uneven in spots, those portions of the narration dealing with Joel and Butch as they sleep rough and live dangerously on the streets of modern-day Chicago make the novel well worth your time and attention.

Boy, dog, amazing journey
By Kindle Customer
Take your pick, the good boy of the book’s title is 11 year-old Joel Murphy or his K9 companion Butchie, a 100-pound German shepherd-Belgian Malinois mix. Both are fully realized creations that grab your affection as much as your attention.

Strong characters portrayed with all the complexity of real people make “The Good Boy” your good read.

This is the story of Joel and his Chicago family, his police officer father Pete, who racks up a dubious history of bending the law as much as enforcing it. (Butch is Pete’s canine partner.) There is Joel’s mother Sarah, who is burdened by a too-heavy weight of grief, mistrust and self-doubt. Joel’s sister is McKenna. It’s her teenage rebelliousness that ignites the story. Joel is at the center of the story. He’s an observant kid who inhabits a world beyond his years, someone who inhales (and catalogues) information as if it were the breath of life. And Butchie, a furry fury when need be.

But of all the characters, the most sharply etched is an overripe pole dancer who has trouble keeping her balance named Elexus who dances, yaks and clamors her way right into your heart with her resolute individuality. None of what she says is quotable here but the oaths and expletives that fly out of her mouth ring true with logic and astonishing equanimity.

A story as gritty as Chicago’s underbelly gives the book its traction, its power to take hold and not let go. Joel with Butchie in tow follows McKenna to a teen bash where illegal substances and intruding gang members stir up a confrontation that explodes into violence. Butch, trained to be a canine enforcer lunges in with sudden, disastrous results. Boy and dog flee. They take to the streets of Chicago. It’s an act of courage, an odyssey that Joel understands will lead him and Butchie away from home and safety. Stuffed in Joel’s backpack is a dog-eared (Joel wonders about the term) copy of “White Fang.” The book becomes the boy’s touchstone.

A story about a boy and his dog, this is a thriller for adults only, intense and ultimately hugely satisfying in its narrative force. Joel and Butchie take a number of wrong turns in their journey through a Chicago wasteland. Schwegel never falters as she drives straight and true to the novel’s powerful conclusion.

In a word: Wow-wee

Hard to improve on the New York Times review of this book. Ms. Schwegel can put her characters into stress early in her books, keep them there by their own machinations, and make them rescue themselves in as realistic a fashion as can any mystery or crime writer currently on the shelf at the airport. She has more patience with her characters than they have with themselves. Normally I don't like animal stories, and I don't like stories about run away kids. Even so, I liked this book a great deal. Go figure. O.W. Holmes

The Bletchley Park Codebreakers (Dialogue Espionage Classics), by Michael Smith

The British codebreakers at Bletchley Park are now believed to have shortened the duration of the Second World War by up to two years. During the dark days of 1941, as Britain stood almost alone against the the Nazis, this remarkable achievement seemed impossible. This extraordinary book, originally published as Action This Day, includes descriptions by some of Britain s foremost historians of the work of Bletchley Park, from the breaking ofEnigma and other wartime codes to the invention of modern computing, and its influence on Cold War codebreaking. Crucially, it features personal reminiscences and very human stories of wartime codebreaking from former Bletchley Park codebreakers themselves. This edition includes new material from one of those who was there, making The Bletchley Park Codebreakers compulsive reading.

Tbe book was too technical to read as a casual history. Too much detail.

I just admire how much effort the code breakers put into breaking the German codes. It meant so much to the allied war effort.
It is really hard to make this generation of young people to appreciate all that we are free in the world today because of the efforts of these people. Looking at the pictures of the enigma, it is amazing that it worked.

Quantum Field Theory, by Franz Mandl, Graham Shaw

Following on from the successful first (1984) and revised (1993) editions, this extended and revised text is designed as a short and simple introduction to quantum field theory for final year physics students and for postgraduate students beginning research in theoretical and experimental particle physics.

The three main objectives of the book are to:

Explain the basic physics and formalism of quantum field theory

To make the reader proficient in theory calculations using Feynman diagrams

To introduce the reader to gauge theories, which play a central role in elementary particle physics.

Thus, the first ten chapters deal with QED in the canonical formalism, and are little changed from the first edition. A brief introduction to gauge theories (Chapter 11) is then followed by two sections, which may be read independently of each other. They cover QCD and related topics (Chapters 12-15) and the unified electroweak theory (Chapters 16 – 19) respectively. Problems are provided at the end of each chapter.

New to this edition:

Five new chapters, giving an introduction to quantum chromodynamics and the methods used to understand it: in particular, path integrals and the renormalization group.

The treatment of electroweak interactions has been revised and updated to take account of more recent experiments.

The one and only book for the beginner.
By tonatiuh
Let me put it this way: I consider a serious mistake for any student NOT to use this book as their first book in Quantum Field Theory. This book is the absolute must for any beginner before he or she moves on into the "fancier" books of the field.
It starts smoothly and someone need only have a basic course in quantum mechanics and analytical (Lagrangian) dynamics. The nice thing about the book is that it is SELF CONTAINED. You start from chapter one and you can go along through the end without ever needing to open any other book. Everything is in there. Also it has nice and very helpfull appendices that have gothered all the formulae, conventions and diagrams that you need in order to calculat any electroweak cross section.
In this book you will learn all the story about canonical quantization in a very clear and informative way. I consider a CRIME for a physics student to start learning Quantum Field Theory with the path integral approach. You loose immedately the physical picture and the particle content of the theory because you are confronted right from the start with mathematical structures that you have never seen and handling them correctly takes away the physics content of the subject. Believe me I have been there! With Mandl you will always be close to the quantum of the field ,which is the particle, you will see it right in fron of your eyes beeing created, propagated and then annihilated, and you will have a clear picture of what is really going on (quantum theory permitting of course).
Mandl gives you right from the beginning all the tricks and tools of the trade for calculating Feynman diagrams. After reading and understanding this book I personally guarantee to you that will be able to calculate any first order diagram in the electro-weak theory and a lot of higher order diagrams too. He introduces in a very pleasant way the trace theorems and the tricks in order to calculate cross sections.
His treatment of the electroweak Lagrangian is superb. He really starts from the beginning and slowly builds up writing down the whole Lagrangian, its symmetries and its uses. His treatment of the gauge symmetry is a real beauty. It really opens your mind. I could go on forever writting about this great book and how much it helped me cope with this difficult for beginners field. You will not be lost in difficult mathematics that will take away from you the real physics and on the other hand you dont loose anything. He has exactly the right material for a first rigorous course in Quantum Field Theory. His treatment of renormalization is also great.
I consider Mandl to be one of the most prominent pedagogists in the physics field and I have the utmost respect for him. The reason for this is that I have gained a very strong background in both Quantum Field Theory and Statistical Mechanics just by reading his books.
The serious student of particle physics will eventually have to move on to the path integral approach, renormalization of the electro-weak theory, renormalization group, QCD etc. BUT without having a solid background in the topics included in Mandl's book this effort will be fruitless and frustrating. Take my word for it.

A very gentle introduction to quantum field theory
By A Customer
This is the best book from which to learn quantum field theory for the first time. Its very easy to understand and concise. Unfortunately it only treats canonical quantization (no mention of path integrals) and most of the emphasis is on QED. The treatment of SU(2)xU(1) electro-weak theory is a very good introduction to non-abelian gauge theory. Overall, it as an excellent book but need s to be supplemented by a more advanced book like Peskin & Schroeder

Thoughtful introduction to QFT
By Ryoji Watanabe
I just want to contribute my five stars.

I'm not a specialist or active in this field, but I enjoy trying to to keep up with interesting things I was led to in college. Hence perhaps I provide the ideal perspective of the perpetual student...

I have several of the other standard texts, which I have at least perused to understand their level and approach. I find Mandl and Shaw to be the best *introduction*. Here are some reasons I like it:

- It is the best book of the bunch that is both completely deep in what it covers and self-contained (but of course it strictly assumes the implicit prerequisites: core quantum mechanics and everything you are likely to have studied if you studied that).
- It focues on the canonical approach. I'm a rabid Feynman worshipper, but in my opinion the path integral approach is best left to the second pass, because it requires two hurdles: a math one-- path calculus--, and a physics one-- shifting focus to the Lagrangian approach to QM. I find the canonical approach a better continuation of core quantum mechanics, hence a better entry point. So learn to count breadth-first; and then have fun discovering you can count it depth-first too.
- The text has a thoughtful logical order of development: Spin 0, 1/2, 1... I think I see a pattern...

Lastly, it is sprinkled with really physically deep commentary on results. Eg, how to understand spin and statistics; or when they frankly describe high-k regularization (a.k.a. math fudging) as possibly modeling new real physics. This arena is both foundational and cutting-edge-- "unfinished"; I like it that they tell it as it is.

Fools' Gold (Order of Darkness Book 3), by Philippa Gregory

All that glitters may well be gold in the third book in the Order of Darkness series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregory.

Tasked to expose a coin counterfeiting scheme, Luca and Isolde travel to Venice just in time for Carnival. Amid the masks, parties, and excitement, the romantic attraction between the two reaches a new intensity that neither can deny.

Their romance is interrupted by the arrival of the alchemist, who may be the con artist they’ve been looking for. But as Luca starts to investigate the original charge, the alchemist reveals his true goal—he plans to create the Philosopher’s Stone, a mystical substance said to be capable of turning base metals into gold and producing the elixir of life.

With pounds of undocumented gold coins and an assistant who claims to be decades older than she appears, all evidence points to the possibility that the alchemist has succeeded in his task. But as Luca and Isolde get closer to the truth, they discover that reality may be more sinister than they ever could have imagined.

Not For Teens Only
By R. E. Anderson
This second book in 'The Order of Darkness' series is aimed at teens, but so well written that adults can get wrapped up in the adventures of the three young people and their older priestly companion and mentor. Read the first book to get a handle on the characters and how their adventures in the middle ages began. The author uses historical events as a setting for these very different characters who come to travel together out of necessity on the young ladies' part. She covers the very different life of women in the muddle pages and the difficulty of life in that time. At the same time by the end of the story we see how history does repeat itself right into the not so distant past here in this country.

worth reading

I am a Philippa Gregory fan - especially the royal series. While this book is not up to her Boleyn standards it is a good and entertaining read. A good beach or weekend read.

What was PG thinking?
By automation7
I have read all three books in the Philippa Gregory "Order of Darkness" series. They were not horrible!, but having chosen this series from an author I previously enjoyed (for the most part), felt disappointed in both the characters and the story lines. I especially felt mislead that each book implied that an ending to the plot would be in the next book....and the final? book has not yet been written. If I want to read the equivalent to a 'soap opera', I can watch Days of Our Lives on TV. I doubt I will read any more books by this author.

All Joy and No Fun: The Paradox of Modern Parenthood, by Jennifer Senior

Thousands of books have examined the effects of parents on their children. In All Joy and No Fun, award-winning journalist Jennifer Senior now asks: what are the effects of children on their parents?

In All Joy and No Fun, award-winning journalist Jennifer Senior tries to tackle this question, isolating and analyzing the many ways in which children reshape their parents' lives, whether it's their marriages, their jobs, their habits, their hobbies, their friendships, or their internal senses of self. She argues that changes in the last half century have radically altered the roles of today's mothers and fathers, making their mandates at once more complex and far less clear.

Recruiting from a wide variety of sources—in history, sociology, economics, psychology, philosophy, and anthropology—she dissects both the timeless strains of parenting and the ones that are brand new, and then brings her research to life in the homes of ordinary parents around the country. The result is an unforgettable series of family portraits, starting with parents of young children and progressing to parents of teens. Through lively and accessible storytelling, Senior follows these mothers and fathers as they wrestle with some of parenthood's deepest vexations—and luxuriate in some of its finest rewards.

Meticulously researched yet imbued with emotional intelligence, All Joy and No Fun makes us reconsider some of our culture's most basic beliefs about parenthood, all while illuminating the profound ways children deepen and add purpose to our lives. By focusing on parenthood, rather than parenting, the book is original and essential reading for mothers and fathers of today—and tomorrow.

Amazon.com Review
Author One-on-One: Jennifer Senior and Curtis Sittenfeld

Curtis Sittenfeld is the best-selling author of Sisterland and American Wife.

Curtis Sittenfeld: As a journalist, you’ve written about a wide range of topics, including pop culture and politics, so I’m wondering why parenthood is the subject that elicited a book from you.

Jennifer Senior: You’re right, and if this were a parenting book, it wouldn’t even occupy the same hemisphere as the other pieces I’ve done. (Confession: I have purchased exactly one parenting book in my lifetime.) But I consider this a social science book, and I’ve done plenty of social science stories over the years: About the psychological effects of high school on our adult years; about loneliness and cities; about burnout; about our obsession with happiness. Also, I think of this book as a series of mini-ethnographies—portraits of how American families live now—and that comes pretty naturally, having been an anthro major. Even when I wrote about the Senate, which used to be often, I treated it as an other-planetary universe with its own alien customs.

CS: This book has its origins in a much-buzzed-about New York magazine cover story. In that article but not in the book, you discussed your own experiences as a parent. Why didn’t you include yourself in the book? Can you share a bit about your family?

JS: So funny: I mentioned my own experience in just two paragraphs of that magazine story, but because they were the first two paragraphs, people misremember it as part-memoir. The only reason I did so – both early in the magazine story and in this book — was to alert readers that I, too, was a parent. But the specifics of my own story seem irrelevant, and too idiosyncratic from which to generalize. It’s far better to look at the full spectrum of social science research about families, and to talk to a wide variety of parents.

For the record, though: My husband and I have one six-year-old son, and my husband has two grown kids from a previous marriage. I entered their lives when they were adolescents, which made me realize how complicated that period was for parents.

CS: One of the book’s fascinating tidbits is the implication that parents have friction with teens in some sense because the parents are jealous.

JS: Jealousy is only a small part of it. (Though I’m amazed by Laurence Steinberg’s finding that fathers become depressed when their teenage sons start to date.) What generally seems to happen is that adolescents make their parents take stock of every life choice they’ve ever made—their marriages and careers especially. Teenagers can be so critical and rejecting that they expose all the holes in their parents’ lives: Now that my kid’s dispensed with me, all I have is my marriage and my job, and I’m not thrilled with either.

CS:In your marriage chapter, you suggest at one point that many moms would be better off being more like dads. Can you explain what you mean?

JS:I only mean this in the sense that fathers seem less frantically perfectionist about their parenting than mothers do, probably because they aren’t burdened by the same unattainable cultural ideals (real or fictional—Tiger Mom or June Cleaver.) It’s a crude generalization, yes, and of course there are exceptions. But both conversations and hard data make it clear that fathers feel much less pressure to play with their children during every free moment, and they’re much quicker to claim their right to free time. If mothers did the same, one wonders what would happen—Glad you’re back from that bike ride, now I’m going to the gym! It’s possible domestic divisions of labor would shift a little in their favor.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, February 2014: Reading Jennifer Senior’s lively and weirdly comforting All Joy and No Fun was like attending the self-help group for beleaguered parents that I never knew I needed. (“Hi, my name is Neal, and I’m a parent-aholic…”) Far afield from the headline-grabbing shockers in books like Tiger Mom, this is a thoughtful and deeply researched look at the reality of modern day parenthood: we love our kids, and they make us crazy, and it’s all our fault. The book grew from Senior’s eye-raising New York magazine piece, in which she explored the dark side of parenting--the depression, the marital woes, the loss of self-worth. Sure, raising kids is, ultimately, deeply rewarding. But on a day to day basis? Sometimes a bummer. Parenthood has changed a lot since World War II, as more women entered the workforce, dads became more engaged in child rearing, and an “asymmetrical” parent-child relationship evolved. We’re doing more for our kids, but they’re doing less for us. “Children went from being our employees to our bosses,” Senior writes. If you want to be a better parent--or, maybe more importantly, to feel better about the parent you’ve become--you need this book. And, probably, a nap. --Neal Thompson

“Salted with insights and epigrams, the book is argued with bracing honesty and flashes of authentic wisdom…[an] excellent book.” (—Andrew Solomon, The New York Times Book Review)

One of the best books I've ever read on parenting.
By Ladybug
Yes, it's one of the best books I've ever read about parenting--and, ironically, it isn't even about parenting. At least not specifically. Senior makes it very clear in her introduction that this is more a book about the history and changing definition of what it means to be a parent, rather than a book of parenting advice. She warns the reader that she will have to sift and sort through the information given in order to find that "advice," but, honestly, I found so much here that will influence my future parenting style and decisions.

For example, it was interesting to learn that parenting as we know it is a relatively new concept. It wasn't until after World War II, when the US began enacting child labor laws, that "childhood" came into existence. Before then, our kids were expected to work, contribute, or be invisible. Once we started protecting them more, though, and requiring less and less of them, our kids became, as Senior somewhat playfully puts it, useless. This uselessness (or maybe purposelessness is a gentler word?) has kind of snowballed over time and led to a whole host of other issues, including bored and unchallenged teenagers and parents who have made it their jobs to fill in their toddlers' spare time with hosts of educational, time-consuming, character-building activities. As kids have become more useless, their restlessness has grown--and parents have taken on the burden of relieving this restlessness.

In short, one of the lessons I am taking away from this book is that my kids (ages 4 and 2) need to be challenged!--and not necessarily through intense or chaotic play dates and heavily-managed planned activities. Instead, I'm focusing on increasing their responsibilities when it comes to taking care of themselves and our house. They can clean, put on their own clothes, maybe even start cooking. I'm going to let them feel boredom and frustration...and I'm going to let them wait out the negative feelings until they experience those wonderful sensations of accomplishment, personal responsibility, and that feeling of belonging that comes when you contribute to something that benefits you AND the people around you.

At any rate, this book is packed with interesting information and insight. I loved it from start to finish, and I know I will be reading it again at some point in the future. Just a great book all around. Highly recommended!

HATED IT and then LOVED IT
By InfoFish
I started reading this book and HATED it. It made my heart rate rocket and it was so frustrating because I kept looking for solutions to the problems of being overwhelmed, under-equipped, exhausted and wondering "is this all there is?" But by the end of the book my opinion totally changed. We are all in this parenthood thing and it is no fun and it is exhausting and overwhelming. And in the end we are left remembering mostly the joy and connections. Children give structure and meaning to our lives. And that does not come cheaply (emotionally and physically and mentally and monetarily)! Particularly poignant was the story of the grandma with Cam - she adopts her daughter's baby boy when her daughter passes. I am not going to give away this story, but in relating it to one of my other mom friends at work (who is exhausted, overwhelmed, rinse and repeat) I started crying - right there at work. The book is well written. Crazy well written. Just don't look for solutions to the overwhelm.

Let's me know I'm not alone
By K. Bortz
As billed on the cover, this is the first book about the impact that children have on their parents. As Jennifer Senior points out, throughout history kids happened immediately after marriage, but in current society the ability to plan pregnancies has let married couples create an entire life for themselves prior to children. It's the loss of this life that creates and immediate impact once kids arrive.

The book is really engagingly written and covers the various age ranges of childhood - newborns/toddlers, elementary school, preteen, teenage. There's also a discussion on the instituion of marriage that is woven into the different sections. Three types of intermingled narratives are used to great effect, frequently on the same page - case studies, where the author has observed families as they raise, educate, feed, play with and bring up their children; technical/research studies, where the author summarizes the results of various psychological papers and research on the various topics; and her own editorializing.

While not funny, the narrative is occasionally wry - particularly when the author is editorializing. But it is well put together and is an easy read. Did I learn anything? Well, it's not like a "how to" book (although there are some instances where discussions of how parents interact with each other or their children made me think "Oh, I should (or should not) do that"). What makes this book special is that I read it and, nearly on every page, could empathize with what was being said. Every tantrum, every disagreement, every tired evening, I'd been through it before. And it made me realize that as parents we are not the only ones going through all of this. It's the nature of being a parent, and we are not alone.

From Booklist
Fancy Nancy is back, with her wild curly hair and unique fashion sense, for a truly lucky adventure. Nancy’s curiosity sparks quickly when a classmate reveals during show-and-share a rare four-leaf clover that brings “good luck . . . even more . . . than finding a penny.” Nancy discovers to her dismay, though, that bad luck exists, too, and plenty of it! Trying to avoid sidewalk cracks and the number 13 is exhausting, and Nancy would like to believe Ms. Glass, who says this luck stuff simply isn’t true. When a black cat, which is “double-trouble bad luck,” runs by Nancy, the result will surprise even the most superstitious of readers. Together, the line-and-watercolor pictures (“based on the art of Robin Preiss Glasser“), simple sentences, and Nancy’s well-defined keywords throughout help beginning readers move quickly through the story and give them plenty to consider, along with Nancy, about luck. Preschool-Grade 2. --Annie Miller
