From School Library Journal
Gr 3–7—Eleven-year-old Nell Green is unhappy about having to spend her school vacation on a farm with her aunt and two younger cousins whom she hardly knows. Once there, however, she easily adjusts to her aunt's gentle nature and the devotion of her cousins. She meets their kindhearted neighbor Rita, who is grieving the recent loss of her husband. His death has prompted Rita to sell her farm animals, including her herd of 99 horses. Nell also meets the wild child Angel, who thunders into her life on a horse and takes her precious leather bag that contains an old tin carousel. As Nell attempts to retrieve her bag, she gets drawn into an adventure; there are missing animals, a midnight horse ride, and a legend about the magic of the hundredth horse. Depending on who is telling the story, the hundredth horse to enter a herd can either ruin the whole lot or signify the arrival of something special. Nell and Angel develop a mysterious friend/foe relationship as Nell begins to wonder who or what Angel really is. The author intertwines the characters and story line with finesse, keeping readers guessing about Angel's identity and the appearance of the hundredth horse until the end of the evenly paced plot. A touch of magic delivers a satisfying and positive conclusion.—D. Maria LaRocco, Cuyahoga Public Library, Strongsville, OH

From Booklist
*Starred Review* A two-week stay in the country brings together two lonely 11-year-old girls and an unusual foal named Lunar that may just be an angel able to bring things—both farms and people overwhelmed by loss—back to life. Fearful, overprogrammed Nell has been sent to visit her aunt and cousins, but she spends much of her time at a nearby farm with a grieving widow who is planning to sell her herd of horses. In the stable there, Nell is allowed to restore the toy carousel left behind by her father when he abandoned the family, which she has secretly brought along with her on her trip. However, the stable also houses runaway Angel, who is hiding the foal she has stolen, having overheard plans to put Lunar down. These two complicated and appealing young people share more than a place to hide. As Nell gradually comes to understand her own needs and motives, as well as Angel’s, so do readers. Running throughout this moving, well-crafted first-person English import is a local superstition about a herd of 100 horses. Will Lunar, the one hundredth horse, spoil the widow’s herd or save the captive princess, as in Angel’s version? Friendship, self-discovery, a dreamlike middle-of-the-night horseback ride, and a satisfying ending make for certain reader appeal. Grades 4-7. --Kathleen Isaacs

Thoroughly enjoyed this adventure!
By Gaby at Starting Fresh blog
Eleven-year-old Nell has a very busy schedule during the school year with all her after school activities. There's drama club, math tutor, and swimming club to start. When she gets home, it seems like her mother is always working or on the phone or focused on something else. Nell was looking forward to spending her two weeks of Spring Break with her Nana just playing cards, talking, watching videos and tv. But a medical emergency causes a change of plan and Nell readies herself to spend her weeks with relatives she's never met: Aunt Liv and her two young children on a farm.

When Nell packs her bags, she comes across the carousel of metal horses that her father had made. It's the only thing that she has left of him. Her mother had removed all traces of him after he abandoned them. Nell wants to put the carousel together again and worries that her mother might discover this last trace of her father. She hides the carousel with her bag and brings it to Aunt Liv's.

Nell's not excited to spend the next weeks with chickens, geese, pigs, horses, cats, five-year-old Gem and seven-year-old Alfie. But Gem and Alfie are so happy to have her with them, introducing her to the animals, baking her cupcakes, showing her all their favorite places. She's the Big Sister-Cousin to them and she loves them back.

Nell encounters eleven-year-old Angel and is warned against her. Regarded as a troublemaker and living in the woods, Angel is associated with all sorts of disappearing animals and property. Angel seems surly, hostile, but there's something about her that reminds Nell of herself. Nell learns about Angel and where she stays from her young cousins. Nell searches for Angel and when she does find her, she follows her clues, and slowly makes friends.

Angel forces Nell to take risks and keep secrets. But their friendship brings the girls unexpected gifts and an adventure that changes their lives.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Nell and her adventures with her young cousins and Angel. A Hundred Horses is a story of hope, adventure and finding one's way. It drew me in from the start and I'm very much looking forward to sharing the story with my six-year-old niece.

Unique Story, Especially Good for Horse Lovers and Fans of Touching Juvenile Fic Reads
By FantasyGirl
A Hundred Horses (or published in the UK as A Horse for Angel) is a unique book with unpredictability. The story begins with Nell and her mom having a rocky relationship due to the haunted memory of Nell's father abandoning them seven years earlier. Nell's mom decides to send Nell to her aunt's and cousins' farm. While there, Nell meets Rita, the kind neighbor who is forced to sell her farm animals and Angel, the mysterious girl people say is a thief and trouble. Nell also meets the beautiful horse Belle and the wonky-legged Lunar, who is suspected to be the one hundredth horse of a famous fairy tale. Nell and Angel are gradually drawn together as they discover through various situations that they are not so different. The two girls help each other and end up learning many things about themselves and the world around them. Nell also talks things through with her mom. The story ended nicely, with the final quote perhaps being my favorite. I recommend to horse lovers and fans of touching juvenile fiction reads.

A friendship horsebook
By samuel
It was very good book because it tells an unbreakable friendship between Angel and Nell. It all started when Nell went to her aunt's house. She secretly brought a suitcase and when she took it out of the car, a mysterious rider steals her suitcase that once belonged to long gone father. When, she finally meets Angel, she tells a story about a hundred horses! Could this story be true?!
