Day/Night: Travels in the Scriptorium and Man in the Dark, by Paul Auster

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ONE VOLUME, TWO EXISTENTIAL CLASSICS BY BESTSELLING NOVELIST PAUL AUSTER

Day/Night brings together two metaphysical novels that mirror each other and are meant to be read in tandem: two men, each confined to a room, one suddenly alert to his existence, the other desperate to escape into sleep.

In Travels in the Scriptorium (2007), elderly Mr. Blank wakes in an unfamiliar cell, with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He must use the few objects he finds and the information imparted by the day's string of visitors to cobble together an idea of his identity. In Man in the Dark (2008), another old man, August Brill, suffering from insomnia, struggles to push away thoughts of painful personal losses by imagining what might have been.

Who are we? What is real and not real? How does the political intersect with the personal? After great loss, why are some of us unable to go on? "One of America's greats"* and "a descendant of Kafka and Borges,"** Auster explores in these two small masterpieces some of our most pressing philosophical concerns.

a practical approach to a philosophical doubt
By amateco
Paul Auster, Man in the Dark, plays with the idea of parallel worlds where different situations are solved with a consequence in the real world, however impossible to fulfil. The action in real world shows that there are things more important to solve related to the future of his beloved daughter and granddaughter .
It is worth to see how guilt is present in life and sometimes guilt is only an excuse to avoid facing life. Great book to read and confront own thoughts with the development of the plot. don't miss the chance to enjoy this work.
In Travels in the Scriptorium is a way to see how thing must stay the same to grasp reality, if we change the name of things , as the case of the old man that every day the labels are changed, he cannot get a point of view to develop his reality. He is attached only to the primary instincts. Important to evaluate how we are stuck to a quiet reality to built our reality

Saving Kabul Corner (The Kabul Chronicles), by N. H. Senzai

From Afghanistan to America, family matters most in this “empowering mystery” (Publishers Weekly), a companion to Shooting Kabul, which Kirkus Reviews called a “story with much to offer.”

A rough and tumble tomboy, twelve-year-old Ariana couldn’t be more different from her cousin Laila, who just arrived from Afghanistan with her family. Laila is a proper, ladylike Afghan girl, one who can cook, sew, sing, and who is well versed in Pukhtun culture and manners. Arianna hates her. Laila not only invades Ariana’s bedroom in their cramped Fremont townhouse, but she also becomes close with Mariam Nurzai, Ariana’s best friend.

Then a rival Afghan grocery store opens near Ariana’s family store, reigniting a decades-old feud tracing back to Afghanistan. The cousins, Mariam, and their newfound frenemy, Waleed Ghilzai, must ban together to help the families find a lasting peace before it destroys both businesses and everything their parents have worked for.

“Senzai successfully weaves the dynamics of Afghan culture, history and political wranglings into a classically American mystery story (Kirkus Reviews).”

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–6—Twelve-year-old Ariana is Califonia tomboy who dreams of having a room of her own. When her polite, pretty, perfect cousin Laila arrives from Afghanistan and steals Ariana's best friend and her personal space, she is less than thrilled. To make matters worse, the family store, Kabul Corner, is vandalized and business is going terribly. When a rival Afghan grocery opens up nearby and a decades-old feud between the two stores is reignited, Ariana must learn to get along with her cousin and her family's enemy in order to solve the mystery of who is sabotaging their livelihoods. While this title is not quite as fast paced as Senzai's Shooting Kabul (S & S, 2010), the mystery coupled with Ariana's struggles in middle school will keep readers interested. Several characters from Shooting Kabul return, but this companion title can be enjoyed on its own. Ariana's voice is relatable and her feelings of unsureness and frustration will be familiar to readers. While all of the main characters share an immigrant experience to some degree, the different struggles that each character faces makes for a more nuanced and compelling read. It is refreshing to see such a vastly multicultural cast in children's literature, and no character is portrayed as stereotypical or overly generalized. The glossary of terms in the back is also a nice touch. Recommended for any fan of multicultural literature or realistic fiction.—Ellen Norton, White Oak Library District, Crest Hill, IL

From Booklist
Despite a bevy of parallel plots and some improbably neat resolutions, middle-grade readers should enjoy this multicultural suburban mystery. Twelve-year-old Ariana’s happy life starts to go awry when her cousin Laila arrives from Afghanistan, full of cultural charm, perfect manners, and a bilingual fluency that makes adults coo and Ariana cringe—and even sweeps away Ariana’s best friend. To make matters worse, the cute new boy in school is from a rival family of Ariana’s: his father opens up a new Afghani grocery store in the same strip mall, and just like that an old feud between the families is resurrected. When both stores are vandalized, the children unite, and with some clever sleuthing they unravel the mystery and put the feud to rest. Adolescent misconceptions, Taliban kidnapping, and local Fremont politics swirl together to interrupt any notions readers may have about sleepy suburban life. A touch of romance provides a satisfying fairy-tale ending. Grades 4-7. --Amina Chaudhri

The arrival of a rival Afghani food market at the same California shopping plaza as the Shinwari family’s already established store brings with it the threat of an awakened family feud.

Eleven-year-old Ariana Shinwari feels klutzy and inadequate next to her almost-12-year-old perfect cousin, Laila, who has moved in with Ariana’s family after fleeing the Taliban in Afghanistan, leaving her father, a translator for the American Army, behind. And now it looks like Ariana’s best friend, Mariam, who also fled Afghanistan with her family, has all of her classes with Laila. But when strange things start to happen at both Kabul Corner and the upstart Pamir Market, schoolgirl conflicts give way to collaboration among Ariana, Laila, Mariam and Wali, the son of the new store’s owner. Senzai successfully weaves the dynamics of Afghan culture, history and political wranglings into a classically American mystery story, unraveling who and what are really at the heart of the conflict between the two Afghani grocery stores. Readers will appreciate that young people solve all of the questions at hand and ultimately bring the two families together.

An engaging mystery—that it’s about Afghani families struggling and surviving in America is a plus. (Fiction. 8-12) (Kirkus Reviews)

In a companion to 2010’s Shooting Kabul that stands solidly on its own, Senzai explores the lives of Afghan immigrants in California. Eleven-year-old Ariana’s family runs Kabul Corner, an Afghan grocery store in Freemont; the arrival of another Afghan grocery to their strip mall threatens their livelihood. Believably chaotic family dynamics heighten the tension in a crowded home filled with cousins and grandparents. Ariana is strong-willed and loyal, and her longings for a new home and a room of her own, along with her jealousy of her cousin Laila (newly arrived from Afghanistan), are relatable. As the rivalry between the stores escalates (with dangerous consequences), Ariana and her friends involve a classmate from the other store’s family to investigate the mystery. Readers who wondered what happened to Mariam, who was separated from her family in Afghanistan in Shooting Kabul, will be gratified to learn the answer in this empowering mystery. Senzai skillfully contextualizes the details of Afghan American life and the violence in Afghanistan that hangs over everyone. Ages 8–12. Agent: Michael Bourret, Dystel & Goderich Literary Management. (Feb.) (Publishers Weekly)

This sequel to Shooting Kabul was good, but Shooting Kabul was better. Make sure to read them both, but not necessarily in order, because it doesn't really matter.

That babysitter’s got to go.

Not only that, but they are leaving her with the formidable Ms. Sonia Sofia Solinsky, who says hello by bellowing, “The Eagle has landed,” and smiles at you with the kind of smile that an alligator might give you before eating you for dinner.

The second her parents are out of the house, Lulu tries out several elaborate schemes to bring them straight back. But just when she seems to finally be making some headway, her babysitter reveals an astonishing secret…one that has Lulu crossing her fingers that her parents will go on vacation all the time—without her!

Gr 2–4—Spoiled little Lulu is back in a third book to tackle a new challenge: a babysitter. Despite Lulu's objection that "babysitters sit babies, and I'm no baby," her parents head off on vacation, leaving her in the care of the intimidating Ms. Solinsky. The little girl does her devious best to get rid of Ms. Solinsky, even preying on her one weakness, a cat allergy, but the babysitter always seems to be one step ahead of Lulu. When she discovers her babysitter's spy training, an intrigued Lulu offers her best behavior in exchange for a little covert training of her own, culminating in an "MM" or "Mysterious Mission." Over-the-top action and the narrator's dry voice balance out a slightly strained plot. Kevin Cornell steps in as illustrator, replacing Lane Smith, who only did this book's cover. Lulu now looks a little more like a regular girl, with a rounder nose and sneakers, but in the wide variety of diabolical facial expressions she wears, readers will recognize the same troublemaker they have come to know and love. Lulu's fans will be happy to read her next (mis)adventure.—Marian McLeod, Convent of the Sacred Heart, Greenwich, CT

From Booklist
Lulu is the type of heroine who is the exact opposite of charming. She is exasperating, tiring, and thinks she is oh-so-clever. This third Lulu book has the heroine meeting her match in a babysitter who is anything but ordinary. In fact, Ms. Solinsky (called in so Lulu’s parents can take a well-deserved vacation from Lulu) is a spy in disguise. She agrees to teach her charge the secrets of sleuthing, if—and that’s a big if—she behaves. Readers will hang in there to see if Lulu can rise to the various challenges set, including the titular mission, which involves following the clues through a clever scavenger hunt. Viorst has always exercised a light, droll touch, and this latest will suit fans of her other humorous early chapter books. Cornell’s illustrations stretch and squish the characters to suit their high-strung antics, while also emphasizing the tall-tale flavor of the adventure—surely Lulu is a match for those legendary heroes if she can successfully transform into a cow (which she can!). Grades 2-4. --Karen Cruze

"Another wild adventure featuring the exasperating and inexplicably lovable Lulu.... Throughout the text, Viorst weaves in an authorial voice that speaks directly to readers, offering witty metafictional commentary sure to induce giggles. Black-and-white drawings depicting a spirited Lulu in action and a good deal of white space keep the text from becoming overwhelming to readers new to chapter books.
Great fun for Lulu fans old and new." (Kirkus Reviews, February 2014)

"Farce, slapstick, tall tale; punctuated with authorial asides, leavened with scads of white space and the many energetic sweeps of Cornell's comic illustrations...this is a book to tickle younger listeners as well as emerging readers." (Horn Book Magazine, March/April 2013)

"Spoiled little Lulu is back in a third book to tackle a new challenge: a babysitter. . . . Lulu’s fans will be happy to read her next (mis)adventure." (School Library Journal, March 2014)

Somewhat disappointing follow-up to the series
By Ginny Campbell
I had read the previous 2 books in the 'Lulu' series and thoroughly enjoyed them. However, I can't decide if this third story is less enjoyable or if the change in illustrator is the source of my disappointment. As a first grade teacher, I would recommend the first two books, but probably not this one.

A more grown up version of LuLu for more grown up children
By Sunshine on a Rainy Day
This is the third installment in the LuLu series. Lulu's parents are going out of town. She throws a fit expecting them to stay. But the parents have a secret weapon--the best babysitter in the whole world. The babysitter is highly trained and doesn't put up with any of LuLu's tricks. But when LuLu pulls out all the stops and causes a confrontation, the babysitter admits she is a trained spy. LuLu then trades obedience for spy training.

This book is not written with the same tone as the first two which were appropriate for the recommended ages of grades 1-4. This book is more mature both in tone and in the illustrations. The illustrator is not the same as the first two. LuLu is meaner and more manipulative. The babysitter is rather mean and manipulative too. This book is advertized for grades 1-5. I believe that should be bumped up to grades 3-5. The riddles are far too advanced for 1st graders as is the subject matter.

PreS-Gr 3—A practically perfect science picture book. Ward features a different kind of bird's nest on each spread, with a four-line rhyming verse suitable for reading aloud on the left-hand pages, and a few sentences offering more information, at a higher reading level, on the right. Jenkins's colorful cut-paper collages, set against white backgrounds that emphasize their attention to detail, illuminate each of the birds' creations. Readers will find nests ranging from the tree-hole cavities of woodpeckers to the scrape nests of falcons to the astonishing woven nests of weaverbirds, and even some that challenge readers' assumptions about what a nest is, such as the emperor penguin egg's "nest" on top of the father's feet. Equally excellent for classroom or storytime, this harmonious blend of text and illustrations executes a simple concept beautifully, in a manner that allows readers of various ages to approach the book in different ways.—Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Pairing elaborate cut-paper collage with rhyming couplets, Ward and Jenkins show the beautiful variety of bird nests found around the world. Each jaunty, lilting four-line poem describes a type of nest, such as the tiny spiderweb cup constructed by a hummingbird (“Mama built a little nest, / a cup so wee and snug, / with wall of moss and roof of sky / and silky, cobweb rug”) or a hole dug by a burrowing owl (“Mama build a little nest / by digging out a burrow. / It was a hoot, our little home, / a safe and feathery furrow”). Jenkins’ gorgeous, remarkably realistic illustrations fill each spread and show the birds and nests in lively, species-specific detail, from the fuzzy fledgling falcon on a craggy ledge to a pair of emperor penguins on an icy expanse, keeping their egg warm on the father’s feet. In addition to the intricate pictures and catchy rhymes, each two-page spread includes a brief description of the type of bird depicted, the materials used in making the nest, and how they are built. Young bird-lovers will adore this cozy, illuminating look into avian habitats. Grades K-2. --Sarah Hunter

Jenkins's (Animals Upside Down) signature paper collages handsomely illustrate this inviting read about bird nest variety. Ward (What Will Hatch?) showcases 14 nest types, from simple scrape nests to intricately woven ones, with rhythmic verses that begin the same way: "Mama built a little nest," although there's some variation on that theme ("Daddy built a little nest"). Realistic vignettes of birds and their nests are set against a white backdrop; spots of vibrant color accent the muted hues of the mostly female nest builders. In one scene, deep ruddy shades adorn a female grebe's majestic profile as she swims near her nest: "Mama built a little nest./ She gathered twigs that float/ and placed them on the water/ to create a cozy boat." Captions alongside the illustrations offer additional information about nesting materials and habits. Families using this as a bedtime book will appreciate the snug ending: "You have a nest—your very own!/ A place to rest your head/ with pillows soft and cozy thoughts—/ your nest is called a bed!" Ages 4–8. Author's agent: Stefanie Von Borstel, Full Circle Literary. (Mar.) (Publishers Weekly)

Echoing the meter of “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” Ward uses catchy original rhymes to describe the variety of nests birds create.

Each sweet stanza is complemented by a factual, engaging description of the nesting habits of each bird. Some of the notes are intriguing, such as the fact that the hummingbird uses flexible spider web to construct its cup-shaped nest so the nest will stretch as the chicks grow. An especially endearing nesting behavior is that of the emperor penguin, who, with unbelievable patience, incubates the egg between his tummy and his feet for up to 60 days. The author clearly feels a mission to impart her extensive knowledge of birds and bird behavior to the very young, and she’s found an appealing and attractive way to accomplish this. The simple rhymes on the left page of each spread, written from the young bird’s perspective, will appeal to younger children, and the notes on the right-hand page of each spread provide more complex factual information that will help parents answer further questions and satisfy the curiosity of older children. Jenkins’ accomplished collage illustrations of common bird species—woodpecker, hummingbird, cowbird, emperor penguin, eagle, owl, wren—as well as exotics, such as flamingoes and hornbills, are characteristically naturalistic and accurate in detail.

A good bet for the youngest bird-watchers. (author’s note, further resources) (Informational picture book. 4-7) (Kirkus Reviews)

"A deceptively simple narrative structure reveals the myriad ways birds prepare for their offspring's arrival. . . . This excellent first science book doubles as a bedtime story." (Shelf Awareness, March 2014)

A deceptively simple narrative structure reveals the myriad ways birds prepare for their offspring's arrival. Jennifer Ward describes their approaches in four-line stanzas. For the woodpecker, "Mama built a little nest/ inside a sturdy trunk./ She used her beak to tap-tap-tap/ the perfect place to bunk." Long gray lines on the black wings of the birds emphasize the tree's vertical majesty and make the hollowed-out home pop on the page. Next, a hummingbird builds "a cup so wee and snug," its "walls of moss" so tactile in Steve Jenkins's (My First Day) collage that readers will want to touch it. Near each stanza, a brief scientific explanation offers more facts. The story may be read straight through, or the reader can linger to take in more information about the scene pictured. Ward also gives examples of mothers who lay eggs in nests "another made"; fathers who serve as "living nest[s]" (the emperor penguin); and even a "Daddy [who] built a little nest./ And then he built another./ And another. And another--/ hoping to impress my mother" (wrens). Some nests float (grebes); others are scraped out of a high ledge (falcons). Ward brings the book back to the child in the closing lines: "You have a nest--your very own!/ A place to rest your head..." Jenkins depicts a robin's nest outside a child's bedroom window, then, with a turn of the page, shows the nest as the child would view it from inside the house. This excellent first science book doubles as a bedtime story. Discover: All the different ways birds (both female and and male) make nests for their offspring. (March 21, 2014 Shelf Awareness)

"From the title page, where a cactus is used as a wren's nest, to the final spreads where the reader realizes that a bed is a nest for a person, the young lap listener can celebrate nests of all sorts. . . . Budding bird lovers will find lots to appreciate, from woodpeckers and hummingbirds to cowbirds and penguins. Jenkins' cut-paper collages, so familiar in many other nature books, are stunning and make excellent use of white space. Ward’s light humor makes these short poems unforgettable." (BookPage Feature, "The Bugs and the Birds," March 2014)

Read aloud to your students as part of a unit of study
By Sunday Cummins
With rhyming text, Jennifer Ward reveals the art of nest making and the diversity of nests - locations, materials, etc. Each two-page layout features one bird like the woodpecker, the cowbird, the wren. There is the rhyming text in a larger print, and then is also a caption, in smaller print, with more detailed, non-rhyming text about that particular bird's nest making. The illustrations by Steve Jenkins support the details described in the text. The author's note at the end is worthy of reading aloud to older students up front--because it reveals the main ideas in the text and the curiosity of the author (that spurred her research).

This could easily be read aloud to preK-4th for specific purposes. In preK-1st grade it might be about exposure and as part of a science unit of study or a hands-on literacy center exploring and describing nests. I'd read aloud just the rhyming text in the book and then go back (during that lesson or another) and read aloud the captions.

In the older grades, this might be a jumping off point for doing further research on one particular bird during a particular unit of study. For example, in the book, the author describes the hummingbird making a "small cup-shaped nest" made of "spiderweb so the little nest will stretch as the chick grows." I wanted to know more and easily found information by searching hummingbird nests on-line.

Also, if you are in a unit of study - I like how this text reveals the diversity of one aspect of birds - nests. I'd pair this with books like Feathers: Not Just for Flying by Melissa Stewart and An Egg is Quiet by Dianna Aston.

A must-have!
By Judy Houser, Bookpal
Any book illustrated by Steve Jenkins is going to catch my eye and this one is definitely another winner! I agree with School Library Journal's review that this is a perfect picture book. Jenkins' beautiful, colorful illustrations of a variety of birds are full of detail. Jennifer Ward's simple poems describing how each bird builds a nest pair wonderfully with the brief but factual explanations of the nest-building process provided on each page. Each page has just enough on it--just enough illustration, just enough text--to educate without overwhelming. The book is geared toward children ages 4 - 8, but I am quite a bit past that and it definitely appeals to me. --Judy Houser, Librarian, Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, Melbourne, Florida.

A winner all the way around.
By Heidi Grange
A beautifully written and illustrated book that is well suited to reading out loud. Not only is the book quite informative about birds and the different types of nests they build but the poetry flows in a pleasing way. Each page explores a different type of bird and a different type of nest with a short poem and a brief explanation of the type of nest. The information is intriguing, I had no idea there were so many different types of nests. I think my favorite was the hummingbird nest that is tiny, but built with spider webbing so the nest will stretch as the nestlings grow. Jenkin's illustrations are amazing as they always are, the details in the nests and birds made for great enjoyment on my part. A winner all the way around.

Did you know that a firefly’s light comes in different colors like . . . green, yellow, or . . . red? This title is jam-packed with similarly awesome animal facts, from the very obvious to the obscure. The authors skillfully execute transitions between each animal section to help beginning readers contextualize and categorize new information. After discussing a kangaroo’s ability to hop, for example, the following section begins, a rabbit is another animal that hops. Likewise, the use of interrogative language, bold diction, and bright, comical illustrations will keep readers engaged. Direct addresses to the young audience (Did you know? Can you do that?), keeps kids involved and asking questions. In the end, the book comes full circle: Unlike hippos . . . blue whales sure can swim! An entertaining read for both browsing and curricular tie-ins, this closes with a page of more fun facts that may encourage further investigation. Preschool-Grade 2. --Annie Miller

Fun animal trivia and humorous illustrations.
By Bob Walch
If your child likes unusual facts and trivia about animals this is a picture book that he/she will love reading over and over again. I have to admit that I discovered quite a few tidbits myself about the animals mentioned here. The frosting on the cake is that the illustrations are funny and also relate nicely to the information about the critter discussed on each page.

Not only is this a good book for home use but schools and libraries should also have a couple of copies because this humorous and informative book will fly of the shelf!

A fun follow-up to the first book
By Sara
Mandy Berr is back in the 2nd book of this series ... and as sassy as ever. Her latest dilemma - competing with Natalie's new cast for the attention of their 2nd grade class - brings the reader back to elementary school and to the world of monkey bar races and line leaders.

Gutknecht's witty take on "life as an eight-year old" makes Mandy relatable to young children and entertaining for parents, too. As the chapters progress, Mandy's trademark stubbornness softens a bit, and the reader is left with several "feel good" moments to ponder. In particular, the final chapters serve to teach children about the importance of friendship and family.

A very enjoyably read that left me and my nieces with smiles on our faces. Recommended for ages 7 to 10.

My 8-year-old just finished this book and says she loves it! She's excited to read the other three we just received next. She's joining Allison Guthknecht's book fan club today and is excited to start a book club with her teacher before the summer ends!

When I Was the Greatest, by Jason Reynolds

In Bed Stuy, New York, a small misunderstanding can escalate into having a price on your head—even if you’re totally clean. This gritty, triumphant debut that Publishers Weekly calls “a funny and rewarding read” captures the heart and the hardship of life for an urban teen.

A lot of the stuff that gives my neighborhood a bad name, I don’t really mess with. The guns and drugs and all that, not really my thing.

Nah, not his thing. Ali’s got enough going on, between school and boxing and helping out at home. His best friend Noodles, though. Now there’s a dude looking for trouble—and, somehow, it’s always Ali around to pick up the pieces. But, hey, a guy’s gotta look out for his boys, right? Besides, it’s all small potatoes; it’s not like anyone’s getting hurt.

And then there’s Needles. Needles is Noodles’s brother. He’s got a syndrome, and gets these ticks and blurts out the wildest, craziest things. It’s cool, though: everyone on their street knows he doesn’t mean anything by it.

Yeah, it’s cool…until Ali and Noodles and Needles find themselves somewhere they never expected to be…somewhere they never should've been—where the people aren’t so friendly, and even less forgiving.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7–10—Ali lives with his mother, Doris, and kid sister, Jazz, in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn and spends all of his free time with best friends Noodles and Needles, brothers who live in a run-down brownstone next door. Needles was born with Tourette's syndrome, and after a particularly bad episode of tics, Doris gave him some knitting needles to focus his attention. The three teens hang out on the stoop and streets, living life and getting in just a touch of mischief. When their friend Tasha gets them into a party-and not just any party, an exclusive, adults-only party-trouble escalates. How will the trio deal with the fallout of that eventful night? Reynolds's debut oozes with authenticity-details about bodegas, barbershops, and local streets flesh out the setting-and builds with great tempo, starting in a slow groove and picking up to a swift beat. The main and secondary characters are well developed; their sweetness, sassiness, and even stupidity are endearing and relatable. This title is an easy sell to teens living in urban areas but will appeal to anyone looking for realistic protagonists in the daily grind, learning about themselves and one another. Reynolds is an author to watch.—Emily Moore, Camden County Library System, NJ

From Booklist
Sixteen-year-old Ali is a walking contradiction. He’s a lauded boxer-in-training who’s afraid of stepping into the ring; a straight-laced, head-down kind of kid on a bad block in Bed-Stuy, a neighborhood rife with drugs and violence. He’s a pillar whose family structure has fractured only to create infrangible bonds of his own with friends and a little sister who rely on him alone for stability. But, most notably, he’s a shockingly benevolent teenager who exudes ageless wit, charm, and grace among circumstances that seem like they wouldn’t allow for such hope. With fresh, fast-paced dialogue, Reynolds’ debut novel chronicles Ali’s friendship with next-door brothers Needles and Noodles, flawed but unforgettable characters all their own, as the three prepare for the party of a lifetime—and pay the consequences for thrusting themselves into a more sordid encounter than any of them could have envisioned. When I Was the Greatest is urban fiction with heart, a meditation on the meaning of family, the power of friendship, and the value of loyalty. Grades 9-12. --Lexi Walters Wright

Review
* “Reynolds…addresses much more—race and class divisions in New York, taking ownership of one’s actions, and standing up for what’s right—without ever sounding preachy. Reynolds also upends tired stereotypes…while leaving in enough sass and grit to keep the story believable. Snappy descriptions…and a hard-won ending round out a funny and rewarding read.” –Publishers Weekly, starred review

Maci and Zoe's Review
By Maci and Zoe Read Books
Maci's Review-When I Was the Greatest by Jason Reynolds taught me a lot about the relationship between family members. When I Was the Greatest is about a guy named Ali and him telling the story of his best friends, Noodles and Needles. Ali and Noodles are best friends and they like to hang out and look out for Needles. Needles has turrets syndrome and so he is treated differently sometimes. Noodles always likes to always make sure that Needles is treated normally, but he does not treat Needles normally. This book is about Noodles coming to term with his brother having a syndrome.
This book was sorta slow but it was still good. It really shows you the perspective of how some families deal with their kid having a disability or syndrome. I would recommend this book to any high schooler who wants to see how a small disability or syndrome can have a big impact on life.
Zoe's Review-I got this book from a giveaway. I was not expecting much from it, although the cover design made me curious. Now that I have read it, I understand the cover design (sort of) and find that this book was not what I expected. It was not a really good book, but it showed a really neat perspective that I have never read about before. It has to do with bullying, but not the typical type. In this book it dealt with the issue of bullying between brothers, when one of them had Tourette syndrome and would blurt out random cuss words and the way the other brother treated him. I really liked the way the book showed this and how it got resolved. I think that the book did a good job of showing this, although there were some things about the book that did not make sense. One of these things was the fact that it seemed like the characters just hung out all day, I was not sure if it was during school or if it was summer. There was not a lot of action and I only liked it towards the end. I think that it is a really neat and unique book that anybody could like.

A modern coming of age tale with a classical literary twist.
By Meghann @ Becoming Books
In 240 pages Jason Reynolds paints an urban coming-of-age tale told through the eyes of a 15-year-old male. When I Was the Greatest is reminiscent of Grapes of Wrath combined with a vanilla Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. The story is told in first person through Ali, Allen, an aspiring boxer who avoids fighting and captures the adventures of him and his neighbors, while exploring what family is over time.

The character building is a priority in this story with the overall plot taking a back seat for the majority of the book. And honestly, it works. With a series of anecdotes, Ali's narrative guides us through the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn with his friends Noodles and Needles in tow. The secondary characters are authentic with their own splash of diversity and growing pains. Since the plot does take the back seat the pacing is slower, to a fault, with all of the action coming to life in the last 100 pages or so. In each chapter the storyline exposes more of each character's background, in turn testing the sacrifices necessary to be secure the bonds of family and friendship.

My one dislike is that everything is a little vanilla. Each chapter is almost too easy resulting in a gift packaged book and beelines for the first source of conflict resolution. However, this isn't enough to discredit the journey of young black males in the city and is an area where relative literature is lacking.

A Terrific Tale Capturing the Energy and Despair of Being Young in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn
By E A Fow
Ali is a kid growing up in Bed-Stuy with his strong Mom, Doris, and his younger sister, Jazz. His dad, a small time hustler sells stolen stuff out of his car (which he is living in), and the brownstone next door has disintegrated into a no-hope building for junkies and prostitutes after the long time owners have sold up and moved South (which happened a lot in Bed-Stuy in the mid 2000s when housing prices boomed, and owners who had gone through the hardest of times (Bed-Stuy = Murder City in the 80s) suddenly had golden tickets and moved away in their old age.) In his terrific Young Adult novel, Jason Reynolds captures the feel of Bed-Stuy, both the energy and the despair, all from the view of young guys whose futures may or may not have been been set in stone already. Ali is part of a loving, if complicated, family, whereas his best friend Noodles who lives next door in the junky house with his checked-out despairing mother and his brother Needles who suffers from Tourettes. Both Noodles and Needles futures look bleak, but Ali and his level headed, warm hearted take on life could perhaps be their saving grace.
Following there day to day activities, in a real, non-judgmental way, Reynolds creates a vision of families surviving, and love thriving in the cracks. Ali is mentored by a local boxing coach, a Vietnam vet missing his legs, but is perhaps to kind to really fight, while Noodles is already spiraling into petty crime and an anti-social rut which can only end badly if he can’t turn around. Together with Needles they get invited to an underground party, and their preparation for it and what happens there will change all of their lives.
So why are these guys called Ali, Noodles, and Needles? Well, I’m not giving that away, but I do want to give up that there is a whole, unexpected knitting subplot going on, and there is a scene where Noodles and Ali go to a knitting store over in Cobble Hill that had me rolling on the floor. Reynolds is interested in the race and class divisions that form the veins of NYC, and just as Ali is aware he is living in a world within other worlds, Reynolds shows us that, too, and in an entertaining, human way. It’s a wonderful book, and everyone should read it, regardless of age.

Even though Roxanne, Veronica, and Alisha are as different as three sisters can be, their combined talents shine in the pop-gospel group their parents, Rocky and Delilah, helped them form. Although Rocky’s death affected his wife and daughters deeply, Delilah’s eye for business has brought new success. When they find out that Delilah’s Daughters has made it to the final round of a popular singing competition, they can’t imagine how quickly the entire family’s lives will turn upside down. A solo contract from a prestigious record label threatens to break up the group, and when new paramours and old lovers enter the equation, Delilah and her daughters have to figure out if the cost of success is truly worth the price. This sweetly tender story of one family’s attempt to navigate the rocky waters of stardom focuses on the importance of loyalty, sacrifice, and second chances. Benson’s intimate knowledge of the music industry is evident, and her charming, inspirational novel will appeal both to fans of Martha Southgate and loyal Behind the Music viewers. --Stephanie Turza

exciting inspirational family drama

Delilah's Daughters

Delilah and Rocky Monroe cherish their three daughters (Roxanne, Veronica and Alisha) even as they encourage them to use their God-given musical talent to make Delilah's Daughters the most popular Gospel group in the country. When Rocky dies, his four females grieve their loss. He angelically watches his beloved "harem" while his widow pushes their adult children to try harder to produce a hit that makes it onto the Billboard charts in honor of their late dad.

The siblings bring different talents to Delilah's Daughters; as Roxanne has the best voice; Veronica the best dance moves; and Alisha the best songwriting skills. They compete as a trio at the annual Gospelfest. Veronica's husband Dexter has plans for his wife to become famous as a solo and leave behind her sisters while Delilah's past threatens to pull down the pillars of her family.

Delilah's Daughters is an exciting inspirational family drama starring four fully developed unique females and a touch of whimsy with Rocky the angel looking over his beloved. Character-driven by each member of the quartet seeking a different life goal; reader will relish the Monroe brood as love proves to be a second hand emotion (nod to Tina Turner) to faith in God and family loyalty hammered by disingenuous ambition.

I really liked this book.. it was definitely full of drama which is always interesting!
It took me a little while to get into it but after I did I finished it pretty quick. I think Veronica, Roxanne, and Alisha were all relate-able. Delilah as well. This family is full of secrets. It definitely makes you think of what you want and is it worth risking your relationships in the process. Do you really want it that bad?

It was a great read! I'd definitely read more from Angela Benson!

One family. Many secrets.
By Amazon Customer
Delilah’s Daughters is about the Monroe family and their trials and tribulations through life. It starts out with three sisters wanting to become the next big gospel group. Things didn’t turn out exactly how they dreamed. After a devastating blow one sister leaves the group to become a solo act. Another sister throws her morals out the window for a man. The baby sister found out everything about her childhood was a lie and her mother was at the helm of it. The real question is can the Monroe’s survive all this and become a loving family again?
This is a faith based book. It gently takes you through right and wrong without beating you over the head. It has been awhile since we have heard from this author. Glad she is back.
