House of Ivy & Sorrow, by Natalie Whipple

Transparent author Natalie Whipple is back with another refreshing blend of realistic romance and light-hearted humor with a one-of-a-kind paranormal touch. Fans of Charmed, Kiersten White's Paranormalcy trilogy, and Maggie Stiefvater's The Raven Boys won't want to miss this spellbinding contemporary tale of magic, first love, and high-stakes danger.

Jo Hemlock is not your typical witch. Outside the walls of her grandmother's ivy-covered house, she's kept her magical life completely separate from her life in high school. But when the Curse that killed her mother resurfaces, it threatens to destroy not only her life but her grandmother's too—and keeping her secret may no longer be an option.

Gr 9 Up—Josephine, 17, lives with her grandmother in a house under the interstate where it's rumored that an old witch can make someone love you if you're willing to give her your pinkie finger. Jo knows that the rumors are true, because her grandmother is that witch. Despite going to great lengths to hide the fact that she's part of a long line of witches, Jo lives a fairly typical life until a mysteriously familiar man comes looking for her. She and her grandmother know that he's somehow connected to The Curse that killed her mother 10 years earlier, but they don't know how, since men are not capable of doing magic. They break tradition and learn more about themselves while uncovering centuries-old secrets. Unlike many supernatural tales, this one does not perpetuate good witch/bad witch or light magic/dark magic themes. Jo is clear that "There is only dark [magic]. A black pool full of power and pain." The story also stresses that there is always a price to pay for using one's powers, even for good purposes, and every character must deal with the consequences of their choices. This is a fast-paced fantasy, with just the right amount of romance and realism. Readers will relate to Jo's relationships with her family, crush, and two best friends. Despite the current glut of supernatural and urban fantasy, this tale will stand out.—Sunnie Lovelace, Wallingford Public Library, CT

From Booklist
Josephine Hemlock’s family has lived in Willow’s End, Iowa, relatively safe inside magical barriers designed to keep out the Shadows and their deadly Curse. But with the unsettling and unexpected appearance of Jo’s father and a shadowy teenage boy, Levi, the entire Hemlock family is now in danger. Jo must face the daunting task of saving her grandmother or becoming the head of the clan. The magical aura permeates the story with vivid and gross descriptions of death by the Curse, and conjured spells demanding pulled fingernails and teeth. But Whipple melds Jo’s witch world with her happy, mundane high-school life, including a sweet romance and the support of Jo’s friends; both anchor the strangeness in refreshing reality. Add to this a grandmother who would make Richard Peck proud, as well as a subtle message about the importance of control over consumption, and you have a delightfully different, suspenseful YA escape. Grades 7-10. --Frances Bradburn

House of Ivy & Sorrow by Natalie Whipple
Publisher: HarperTeen
Publication Date: April 15, 2014
Rating: 4 stars

Summary (from Goodreads):

Josephine Hemlock has spent the last 10 years hiding from the Curse that killed her mother. But when a mysterious man arrives at her ivy-covered, magic-fortified home, it’s clear her mother’s killer has finally come to destroy the rest of the Hemlock bloodline. Before Jo can even think about fighting back, she must figure out who she’s fighting in the first place. The more truth Jo uncovers, the deeper she falls into witchcraft darker than she ever imagined. Trapped and running out of time, she begins to wonder if the very Curse that killed her mother is the only way to save everyone she loves.

What I Liked:

Well, I definitely did not expect to like this book as much as I did! I'm not a fan of witch-related books, to be honest, so I surprised myself by downloading this one in September. I can't say I regret it! I enjoyed this book, much to my surprise and pleasure.

This book involves what people typically think of witches - with the cauldrons, spells, creepy house, etc. Jo lives with her grandmother, so that doesn't hurt the illusion either. But things start to get weird when a man shows up at the house (mansion? castle?), looking for Carmina - Jo's dead mother. But Jo's mother didn't just die - she was killed by the Curse, which sucked away her witch powers and killed her. But even weirder things are uncovered, and Jo must race against time to figure out what exactly is going on.

One of the things that really impressed me was how "witchy" this story really was. There were spells and cauldrons and magical barriers and secrets and spiders and frog and eyes and all those typical things you think of when you think "witch"! I really liked that, because it's like going back to the "original" stuff, instead of dressing up the idea of a witch in the modern world. This is set in the modern-day, in case you weren't sure. One of the things that was horrible but fascinating was the way in which the witches bind someone to silence - if they allow a human to know about their existence and don't wipe their memories. I won't give it away, but it's gruesome.

Those quirky (and sometimes horrible) things that made this witch story a real witch story was probably what kept me interested the entire time. The story was also very intriguing. Jo is trying to figure out what really happened to her mother ten years ago, with the Curse and the shadows. She and some other witch relatives comb through histories of the Hemlock family for a clue about the Curse. But there is a twist and turn at every page. A boy shows up - Levi - and he wants them to trust him, but everything about him is wrong.

This book has a good amount of focus on friendship. One of Jo's friends, Kat, finds out about Jo and her grandmother being witches, and is allowed to keep her memories (but she has to go through the binding process). This makes Jo and Kat closer (naturally), but that makes their friend Gwen jealous. Yup, not only does Jo have to worry about staving off the Curse, shadows, and Levi, but she has to keep a social life going, keep up with her new boyfriend, and figure out what to do to help her family.

Oh yes, there is a new boyfriend in the picture. Winn and Jo have liked each other for quite some time, but Winn grows a pair in the beginning of this book and asks her out. So, this romance is a little different, because the feelings already exist. The relationship itself grows, and it's really cute. And a tiny bit heartbreaking. And the climax and end is sad, but has its merits. I like the romance in this book (even if it is a bit predictable).

Overall, I really enjoyed this book! The story was very good and the action was pretty nonstop. I'm happy with the character development, the romance, and the ending. It's a standalone novel, and Whipple definitely ended it that way. I'm really glad I gave this book a chance, despite usually disliking witch-related books!

What I Did Not Like:

There were definitely some parts of this book that were excessively predictable. Or, at least, for me, they seemed really predictable. I won't spoil anything, but I'll give you a few examples. The mystery man in the very beginning of the story? OF COURSE he is who we think he is. And Winn? OF COURSE he can't just be exactly who we want him to be. And Levi? OF COURSE he always has horribly crappy timing, and OF COURSE Winn always walks in on Levi and Jo. OF COURSE these things must happen that way, right? So utterly predictable.

But, despite the predictability of some things in this book, I like this book a lot.

Would I Recommend It:

If you're looking for a paranormal fiction novel with a cute romance, then this is definitely a good one for you! I didn't think I would like it, because I'm not the biggest fan of witch-related books, but I'm glad I gave this book a chance. It doesn't hurt that Whipple's writing style had me interested and engaged throughout the story. So, if this seems like your type of read, then definitely go for it!

Rating:

4 stars. I enjoyed this book a lot more than I expected! Which is always a good thing, in my opinion. Natalie Whipple's novels are alright by me!

House of Ivy & Sorrow
By Lauren
Witch books are by far my favorite reads so when I seen House of Ivy & Sorrow I didn’t have to think twice about reading it. One plot point that I love reading about and do not see enough is Curses so this was an absolute must read for me.

I LOVED these characters, honestly. Nearly every single person in Josephine’s life was just fantastic. They weren’t particularly fleshed out or stellar but they were altogether a great group of family and friends and I had to appreciate that. Josephine was strong-willed and stubborn and those are always qualities that draw me in to protagonist. Plus she had a great relationship with her friends & family and really held them close to her heart. Jo’s grandmother was just hilarious at times but she was very strong and a great parent to Jo. I don’t want to delve too far into the characters because there are some plot points intertwined with them and it would spoil the effect of the story to discuss much.

The main story, while quite predictable was so enjoyable. There were a few things that threw me for a loop but it was so well written and action based that I couldn’t put it down. All of the intricate elements that were involved from the Curse to the histories were so attention grabbing and I easily read this in two sittings.

The romance between Jo and Wynn, probably might be one of my favorites as of late. It was innocent, sweet and lovely to read about. They knew each other for several years, were friends first and I was definitely in their court the whole time.

One thing that I did notice and it stuck out fairly strongly for me, especially towards the end of the novel was this read more like a slightly older middle grade novel. Not quite young adult but on the older age scale of middle grade, if that makes sense. That’s not a negative thing, I love the way it read, however I want to point that out incase that is a turn off to some people. It was wrapped up lock and key, there wasn’t a single plot point left open. For me, that is perfect because I have much better luck with closed endings as opposed to open endings, or things left undone.

I loved House of Ivy & Sorrow. It was wonderfully well written, attention grabbing, the characters were fantastic and the ending was perfect. I highly recommend this book!

Loving House of Ivy's Magical World
By Telzey
“They say a witch lives in the old house under the interstate bridge.” Thus starts the story of House of Ivy and Sorrow. What could be better? Doesn't that feed you an immediate image and make you want to know more? An old Victorian house with a tower, covered with ivy, and a front door that opens onto either of two different parts of town, depending on where you want to go. Crack!

This is an amazing book with a rich and well thought-out magical world. The cardinal rule: “You cannot get something for nothing.” Everything has a price. Dead spiders, a lock of hair, a fingernail. The more powerful the magic, the more you have to pay. As the tension mounts up and the problems become more dangerous, you cringe when you see the consequences of that rule.

The story is as much about our junior witch, Jo, and her two best friends, as it is about the ancient family curse her senior witch grandmother is fighting. Magic is supposed to be a secret but … friends are friends, and they find out. There is also a love triangle with Jo and two guys who are very different, but both so great that you have a tough time deciding who you want her to prefer.

The writing is imaginative. Magic is described as being “dark and warm, like melted chocolate coating my lungs.” It is strong. When Jo tells her grandmother about seeing an ominous stranger, she says: “Her eyes snap to mine.” It is vivid. When the evil force behind the curse attacks, “the sky screams.”

It's a great book. I almost wish it was an adult novel instead of a young adult book, so it could be longer. There is enough going on. And you won't be able to figure out the ending. It's a page-turner.

Engines of the Broken World, by Jason Vanhee

Merciful Truth and her brother, Gospel, have just pulled their dead mother into the kitchen and stowed her under the table. It was a long illness, and they wanted to bury her—they did—but it's far too cold outside, and they know they won't be able to dig into the frozen ground. The Minister who lives with them, who preaches through his animal form, doesn't make them feel any better about what they've done. Merciful calms her guilty feelings but only until, from the other room, she hears a voice she thought she'd never hear again. It's her mother's voice, and it's singing a lullaby. . . .
Engines of the Broken World is a chilling young adult novel from Jason Vanhee.

From School Library Journal
Gr 6-8-Twelve-year-old Merciful Truth and her older brother, Gospel, have just lost their mother following a long illness. They are unable to bury her because of heavy snow and unseasonable cold. Despite the warnings of The Minister, their shape-shifting spiritual advisor, they place her under the kitchen table. Wracked with guilt, Merciful comes to terms with their decision until she hears her mother's voice from the other room. Her reanimated corpse, inhabited by an unknown entity, informs Merciful that she might be the only one who can stop a world-destroying fog if she can find the machine responsible. Unfortunately, The Minister has other plans. Atmospheric and unsettling, Vanhee's debut offers a fresh approach to apocalyptic fiction. Set primarily in the Truth family's cabin, the narrative revolves around the actions of Merciful and Gospel, and in this intimate setting, their choices feel heavy and their options limited. It's a testament to Vanhee's writing style that he can make something as immense as the end of the world feel so disturbingly claustrophobic. Merciful is the catalyst who sets the narrative in motion, and it is through her strength and courage that the audience sees a glimmer of hope despite the bleak circumstances. The book's ambiguous conclusion is both refreshing and frustrating. Spiritual but never didactic, the story will leave readers questioning their own truths and beliefs.-Audrey Sumser, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Mayfield, OHα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journal. From Booklist
For siblings Merciful and Gospel Truth, it’s the end of the world as they know it. But it’s hardly fine when their recently deceased mother refuses to stay dead, and their “minister” (present in the form of an unsettling feline) can’t be trusted. The real problem in this apocalyptic debut novel, however, is the fog devouring the world. Unlike most action-packed dystopias, the story’s slower pace (almost too slow in some parts) allows readers to feel the fog encroaching on Merciful and Gospel’s rustic home, and hear every scratch of their dead mother’s awkward movements upon the cellar stairs. The effect gives the horror fantasy an atmospheric, even claustrophobic feel. As the children try to make sense of the events unfolding in their shrinking space, they discover through unusual visitors that God has become angry and is ready to destroy the world again. It’s now up to Merciful to make choices and decide the world’s fate—if she has free will within God’s plan. Vanhee’s fresh voice may confuse some, but it will intrigue many more. Hauntingly original. Grades 9-12. --Angela Leeper

Review

“*Faith and hopelessness swirl like snow in a winter storm in this scary but terrific debut novel with a fresh, engaging voice.” ―Kirkus, starred review

“In dense, lyrical language, the novel raises questions of religion, morality, and free will as it builds toward a dark and ambiguous ending.” ―The Horn Book

Hardcover Edition is revised, extended. Either edition is well worth reading!
By Amazon Customer
ALERT: Just came back from a bookstore appearance by the author, Jason Vanhee. He was asked if there were any changes to the print version of Engines versus the older Kindle edition. His answer was that about 20% of the text was revised, and a full 20% of additional text was ADDED to the book to flesh out some of the middle sections of the story. So to summarize, if you've read the Kindle version, you may want to buy the new print edition as well, since approximately 40% of it is going to be new.

I read the Kindle edition and loved it, so I'm actually quite excited by the news, especially knowing now that the earlier Kindle edition that so effectively terrified me might actually be the LESS scary version of the story. Jason assured the audience that no important elements of the story were changed, so it sounds like it's still going to have the same tightly-wound story and growing sense of dread that filled the Kindle edition. I cannot recommend this book enough!

Ending and Chaos in a Broken World
By Pop Bop
This is the kind of book - original, literate, thoughtful, and a bit unnerving - that leads many to conclude that some of the most intriguing and thought provoking work being published today is being produced for the YA as opposed to "adult" markets. The cover of this book and the blurb promise a "chilling" experience, but that only hints at the depth and the rewards of this reading experience.

ALERT THAT VERY GENERAL SPOILERS FOLLOW: Our narrator is a young girl who is trapped in an isolated cabin with the body of her recently deceased mother. Her older brother has just returned to the cabin from his wanderings. The only other occupant of this claustrophic environment is the Minister, a "made thing" in an animal form that occasionally favors the two siblings with bits of scripture and religious advice. There are a few scattered neigbors, but the general sense is that the rest of the world has somehow "broken down", and there may not actually be anyone else out there.

The title of the book is perfect. "Engines of the Broken World" is taken from a poem written by Lucan and first and famously translated by Christopher Marlowe. Lucan's Pharsalia, ("Civil War"), was written around 50A.D. and has been called the weirdest and craziest epic poem ever written. The poem addresses the civil war that followed upon Caesar's return to Rome to become emperor. The most famous quote is "So when the world's compounded union breaks, Time ends and to old Chaos all things turn;...Dissolve the engines of the broken world. All great things crush themselves, such end the gods..." This appears as an epigram to the book, but is more than just a little nod to the writer's erudition. This quote serves as an almost literal plot summary. The book is about breaking, ending, chaos and the perhaps literal dissolution of this broken world. Now, really, if you were an advanced and fairly sophisticated YA reader would that not capture your imagination? END OF MILD GENERAL SPOILER.

Because of its uniqueness, the most useful way to describe this book, at least that I've come up with, is by comparison. Our narrator is sort of like Scout from "To Kill A Mockingbird" - self-aware, wise and mature beyond her years, patient and empathic, but still a young girl. We follow the story through her, but perhaps we see or hear or understand a bit more than she does. The feel of the story is a bit over-the-top southern gothic - a touch of decay, vaguely, (or obviously), weird characters, an odd juxtaposition of the genteel and the bizarre. There is a story and there are events, and there's a plot, but it isn't exactly linear and it doesn't lend itself to tidy resolution. It's much more like some of the more abstract and atmospheric "Twilight Zones" , with elements of creepy wonder and family conflict, as though H.P. Lovecraft and Eugene O'Neill had collaborated on the script.

All of this is handled delicately and efficiently. The book is neither dense nor heavy handed nor showy - the writing is supple, understated and elegant, which complements the innocent voice of the narrator heroine and balances the darker themes.

So, a very happy find. A challenging and rewarding YA read. Not necessarily suited to everyone's tastes, but maybe just right for an adventurous young, or adult, reader.

Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book

One of the freakiest books I have ever read
By Jenna Detrapani
ENGINES OF THE BROKEN WORLD by Jason Vanhee is one of the freakiest books I have ever read. The story taps into all of the fears that humanity has possessed since the beginning of time – fears about about life, death, creation… not to mention, the things that go bump in the night. Sure to be a controversial read, I found myself enjoying this book, despite the nightmares it gave me.

I find it startling that ENGINES OF THE BROKEN WORLD had actually been initially published back in 2011, by Jason Vanhee himself. Apparently Macmillan caught wind of it and saw it for all of its horrific potential. Not to mention that those who read this book will likely “talk” about it. ENGINES OF THE BROKEN WORLD raises controversial points about religion, creation and our ultimate fate. Not to mention, it is about two young siblings left on their own after the death of their mother, who really hadn’t ever been much of a mother to begin with. The hard questions it raises – both about family roles and religion – will create a line between lovers of the book and the haters.

I, for one, find ENGINES OF THE BROKEN WORLD to be one of the best horror stories that I have ever read. As far as horror goes, the author knows how to write! It’s like a mix between The Others, The Village and The Mist all rolling into one, with a bit of Japanese horror film-esque monsters and terrifying surprises. I haven’t been so scared by a book in a very, very long time – and this is coming from someone who has read a lot of Stephen King! I had to give myself a reading curfew anytime I picked up this book at night, for fear that it might give me nightmares. Shame on me, I broke that curfew all three nights that passed over the duration of my reading this book. Needless to say, the lights stayed on in my room until I was safety nestled under the covers for well over a week after I finished it. I don’t consider myself easily scared by books, either. Movies? Yes. Books? Never. ENGINES OF THE BROKEN WORLD is one creepy book, guys.

The setting/time frame of the novel is never determined, and I will not say when I think it takes place for fear of spoilers. But the story centers around a boy and girl who live in a community with limited resources and more “traditionalist” ways. It’s almost an Amish community of sorts, though this, too, is never fully explained. (For reasons, again, that I will not go into.) I will say that there are plenty of surprises in store, in a manner that is almost M. Night Shyamalan in nature, only a little more daring.

The characters in ENGINES OF THE BROKEN WORLD are who they are, throughout the entire book you follow along inside the head of the young tween, Merciful. You won’t necessarily like all of the characters, perhaps not even Merciful herself, but their personalities and their actions are understandable. They are children, and as such children will act as children do. Sometimes selfishly, naively and without reason…Their story is all the more painful because the two children are seemingly left alone in their community. I love how naively they have adopted and accepted the presence of The Minister in their lives. Like within the Garden of Eden, the characters will be tested – and you may or may not agree with how they behave. (Just saying…)

Yes, there is a lot of religion in this book. If that thought alone makes you cringe and want to turn away, hear me out before you go: Religion is used as a vehicle for the plot, not as a preachy sermon to the reader. Is religion and faith good? Or is it bad? There is much discussion that could be had as to what the author’s point of view on religion actually is. I didn’t know what his viewpoint was going into the book and, even after reading ENGINES OF THE BROKEN WORLD, I still don’t even care to know. Usually religion in fiction acts as a deterrent for this reader – I’m just not interested in it. But in this case, I think that the matter of religion enhances the story; it punctuates the outcome and it gives the reader A LOT to think about…

…and really, isn’t that why we all read to begin with?

I ask that readers give ENGINES OF THE BROKEN WORLD a chance. You may find you like it for the entertainment value it provides alone and you will certainly get a good scare out of it. Or you may just find something even deeper within these pages that makes it more than worth the read…

The ethnic artwork of Vo-Dinh Mai is a perfect complement
By Midwest Book Review
In The Hermit And The Well, Vietnamese Buddhist monk, poet, scholar, and human rights activist Thich Nhat Hanh has written a story of a young Vietnamese boy who climbs a mountain in the hope of meeting a famed hermit that lives there. What the boy finds is the secret of his own happiness. The ethnic artwork of Vo-Dinh Mai is a perfect complement to Hanh's marvelous tale showcasing the importance of slowing down and appreciating the beauty that is always around us -- if we would only see it.

Lovely
By Amazon Customer
This is a very lovely, charming book. Deceptively simple, yet ultimately quite deep. In that sense, it reminds me a bit of the famous serious of drawings of an ox and his master; this is the series that serve to remind us of the search for, and discovery of, ourselves -- wisdom -- whatever.

In this short book, a young boy and his school class learn that they are to visit a hermit -- the boy wanders away from the group, looking for the hermit. Whre he finally discovers the wise man is the point of the book. This is a very sweet book with excellent drawings. I highly recommend it.

Great for Taylor Swift collectors and performers
By Ricky Flores
I got this yesterday at Target and for those who like to perform or just like to collect anything Taylor related this is the songbooklet for you. Consist of sheet music for all 16 tracks from RED and also includes Guitar fingerings, lyrics and piano musical notes. The lyrics are made to piano musical notes so you can tell where they are and make sure you hit the octave range. The back of the booklet is the cover to the Target exclusive RED deluxe edition which is pretty cool. Interior also includes an index for you to find the songs you want fast. Again this is a great product for performers and Swifties who want to collect anything Taylor related.

Great for beginners.
By Rebecca A. Perconti
This is the first song book I got to learn to play guitar on. I love it, its very easy to follow, very easy to use, has all the tracks from the regular RED CD (none of the deluxe songs, but whatever). It shows you how to make each one of your chords at the top where you see where to switch. This book is great, very easy to follow, absolutely phenomenal. I love it
