Dressed in a cat costume, Matilda makes ambitious plans for her cat—and her cat ignores them. The text consists of pencil-scrawled lists of things that her cat “likes,” which get crossed out as they fail to prove true. “Matilda’s cat likes playing with wool,” writes Gravett (Again!) as the cat cowers behind the yarn basket. Matilda tries stacking cardboard boxes into a playhouse (“playing with wool, boxes”) and pedaling a trike (“playing with wool, boxes, and riding bikes!”); the cat leaps in the other direction. It turns out that a good cuddle is all it wants. The cumulative pile-up of failures, comic in itself, is augmented with many smaller giggles (a tea party in which Matilda gets all the treats and the cat is left with a banana). Matilda likes many things, including riding bikes, climbing trees, funky hats and fighting foes. Each spread shows Matilda playing at one thing while the text claims that her orange tabby enjoys it. “Matilda’s cat likes playing with wool,” it begins, as rosy-cheeked Matilda romps inside a huge, multicolored wool tangle and launches a ball of yarn toward the cat. He looks up with wide-eyed trepidation. On the next page, the words “playing with wool” are neatly crossed out and replaced by the word “boxes”: The narration now admits that tabby doesn’t like playing with wool but instead claims he likes Matilda’s box-stacking-and-hiding game (actually he looks alarmed). This pattern continues, the text asserting and then retracting (with cross-outs) what the cat likes. A tea party dismays him, as Matilda serves him an unpeeled banana. A bedtime story causes stiff-tailed, whiskers-on-end terror—though is it due to Matilda’s storybook, Gravett’s own Dogs (2010), or the large dog/wolf shadow puppet casually cast by her chubby fingers? Matilda sports a head-to-toe tabby suit, linking cat and girl all along; the shrewd and skillful art implies sly underlying affection even when the cat’s nonplussed, worried or asleep.

Dressed in a ginger cat costume, young Matilda tries to engage her pet cat in a variety of activities to no avail. Despite the narrative insistence that it’s her pet who likes these things (“Matilda’s cat likes playing with wool”), illustrations show the ginger tabby cat cowering at the ball of yarn lobbed at him by Matilda, running in fear from the bike, and watching, nonplussed, as Matilda clambers about in a couple of cardboard boxes. A fed-up Matilda eventually trades her cat suit for pajamas and heads for bed in a huff, but luckily, there is one thing that Matilda’s cat does like: Matilda. The final pages show Matilda and the cat snuggling in bed (followed by the cat savaging Matilda’s dog-shaped slippers). The listlike narrative is carefully and crisply structured, with activities satisfyingly listed in groups of three, save for the final reveal of the cat’s actual desire. Gravett’s simply composed pictures feature a blank white backdrop and keep the focus on the soft-edged but strong figures of the cat and Matilda, who resembles Sendak’s Max both in her furry outfit and clamorous demeanor. The contradiction between the text and the put-upon cat’s comical expressions is the real hoot here, and young pet owners will particularly relate to Matilda’s desire to have her cat behave according to her whims. This would partner well with the similarly themed Duncan and Dolores by Barbara Samuels (BCCB 3/87) or, for a contrasting portrait of activities favored by felines, with Schwartz’s There Are Cats in This Book (BCCB 12/08). The interplay between Emily Gravett's text and artwork are as humorous as the interactions of Matilda and her cat. Matilda, the girl heroine, dresses like her tabby in a costume bearing identical stripes, tail and ears. She clearly adores her pet. "Matilda's cat likes playing with wool," the text claims in penciled handwriting. The cat ducks behind a bin as the girl, tangled in multi-colored strands of yarn, lobs a ball of wool in her pet's direction. On the next page, the phrase "playing with wool" is crossed out and replaced with "boxes." The cat gazes nonchalantly at the girl as she peeks out of a two-story corrugated fortress. So begins Matilda's wish list of shared activities for her and her cat. The feline looks downright terrified of "riding bikes!" (having escaped from the trike's rear cargo box), and one of the funniest images shows the cat staring at a banana at Matilda's tea party (a smear of chocolate on the hostess's face indicates that she's having a fine time). While Matilda is off "fighting foes," her feline naps; her "bedtime stories" (Gravett's Dogs) make the cat hiss. But there is one thing they enjoy doing together: cuddling at bedtime. Gravett keeps her compositions spare; she uses only enough pattern or color to illustrate the item on Matilda's list. The focus remains entirely on the relationship between Matilda and her cat. Outfitted in her cat suit, Matilda entices her cat to play. She holds a tea party, climbs a tree, reads a storybook, and attempts other cat-centric activities. The cat is indifferent, disgusted, and even horrified. The text names each new activity in sentences beginning with “Matilda’s cat likes,” but as the cat demurs or protests, each item is crossed off. In spreads, the cat is on the left, sometimes almost running out of the book, thus reinforcing feline independence. It is not until the final spread that we see Matilda and her cat cuddling, and we learn there is one thing Matilda’s cat does like, Matilda! Gravett’s use of cat and dog motifs in the illustrations, and details such as the cat using the storybook as a platform for preening, enhance the unconditional relationship between Matilda and her tabby. Had been looking for a book for my granddaughter Matilda for a long time. This book was perfect and so was the price. Matilda enjoyed receiving this book about her cat!

Emily Gravett, winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal, is a fantastic author and illustrator for children. This charming picture book investigates the relationship betwen a young girl and her cat - as Matilda tries to discover what her cat really likes doing. Does she like to play with wool, boxes or funky hats? Her attempts to get her cat to join in playtime is not very successful, but the illustrations are engaging and will make your little one laugh. One of the things I love about Gravett's artwork is that she leaves much of the page blank, making it easy for children to concentrate on the illustrations - especially when you are reading the book aloud to a group of small children. Matilda gets a little exasperated in this story but, by the end, both Matilda and her cat have agreed on one thing that her pet really does like. This is a warm and sweet story, ideal for bedtime or storytime.

Cat lovers of all ages will like this picture book. The little girl featured here (her name is Matilda) is all decked out in a cute kitty costume and she makes a list of things that she thinks her cat likes to do. Really, these are things Matilda enjoys doing but not her cat. But no matter...there is one thing that Matilda's cat does like but you'll have to wait until the final page to discover what that "something" is.

Emily Gravett's minimalist approach works nicely in this book because she is a wizard at capturing the cat's facial expressions. This is one cool kitty and Matilda is cute as well. So, if you are a feline fancier and your child shares that love too, this is a must purchase. This book definitely goes in my granddaughter's future birthday box. Oh dear, the secret's out now !

Too Much Filler

Paul Auster has admitted in interviews that in the past few years he has found it harder and harder to come up with ideas for novels. So given this lack of ideas for fiction he seems to be churning out non-fiction of late, 'Winter Journal' in August 2012 and just 9 months ago 'Here and Now', a collection of his not very interesting correspondence with novelist J.M. Coetzee. Now we have 'Report from the Interior'. Where in 'Winter Journal' he examined his life through his physical self, he here examines his life through his interior life - his memories. For the most part I found the results lackluster. The first section of the book about his childhood, spent in middle class, suburban New Jersey is filled with memories of school, summer camp, school dances and girls, not any different from the memories of other suburban boys. Nothing makes this material rise about the ordinary, although there are occasional flashes of humor as when a family friend arrives with baseball legend Whitey Ford in tow to introduce to the young, baseball loving Auster. Is it Whitey or an imposter? Fifty years later he still doesn't know.There is an occasional flash of brillance when early in the book he describes his experience as a youngster floating outside himself, 'a phantom without weight', a dissassociatve feeling that still comes back to haunt him so many years later. But such instances are few and far between here.

The third section of the book is relatively interesting. While writing this book his first wife author, Lydia Davis, offered to provide him with copies of his correspondence to her, written while in their twenties. He focuses here on the earliest ones written to her between the ages of 19-22. These letters tell of his time at Columbia University and then in Paris doing some translation work, and his agonizing over whether to complete his junior year abroad or drop out of Columbia making him eligible for the draft during the Vietnam War. In these letters we catch glimpses of the superb writer that Auster will become. Unfortunately this section which ends the book ends with a lengthly letter to Davis describing apartment hunting in NYC, drunkenness and carousing - a touch of the juvenile. To me it was mere filler which is the main problem with this book. To be honest this book is chock full of filler. In the second section of the book Auster spends seventy pages describing in excruciating detail the plots of two films that impacted his childhood - 'The Incredible Shrinking Man' and 'I am a Fugitve from a Chain Gang'. It's easy to understand the emotional impact of these films on a young boy, but I can't explain his need to fill so many pages on them, far more pages then he gives to any books that may have influenced him as a child, which are barely mentioned at all.

Then there is the final section of filler entitled 'Album', grainy black and white photos that illustrate his text - photos from the two movies, as well as news events, and baseball and entertainment figures mentioned in the text, all unneccessary and added to fatten the otherwise slim content of this book. All in all I found it disappointing.

One Writer's Beginnings

While all of REPORT FROM THE INTERIOR is interesting, the first section is in a word simply brilliant as Paul Auster remembers the first years of his life. (The section ends with an event that happened when the writer was in seventh grade and he was born in 1947.) The opening paragraph is stunning and one I reread again and again: "In the beginning, everything was alive. The smallest objects were endowed with beating hearts and even the clouds had names. Scissors could walk, telephones and teapots were first cousins, eyes and eyeglasses were brothers. . . The branches of trees were arms. Stones could think, and God was everywhere."

To those of us of his generation, Mr. Auster brings that time vividly back to our remembrance: the polio scare, the unsuccessful campaign of Stevenson for President in 1952, Hopalong Cassidy, the Long Ranger and Tonto, "The Twilight Zone" and literally dozens of other references to what was happening in the U. S. Mr. Auster cannot remember learning how to read. "At some point in your adolescence, your mother told you that you could identify the letters of the alphabet by the time you were three or four." He isn't sure this is a true statement since his mother "tended to exaggerate" about the accomplishments of her son. (Sound familiar?) At any rate Mr. Auster fell in love with reading and books,-- although he says there were few books in his home-- purchasing the Modern Library edition of Poe's complete poems and stories when he was only nine-- he didn't understand all that he was reading but loved the sounds of the words -- and later becoming enamored with O. Henry and purchasing in 1958 DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, another book way too difficult for an eleven year old to understand.

Mr. Auster of course was taught by his teachers that "no country could compare to the paradise you lived in" and that every boy [no girl certainly] could grow up to dream of becoming president; but nothing was said about the plight of poor black people or the Indians. He also learned that his father had worked briefly for Thomas Edison, one of Mr. Auster's heroes, and had lost the job only because he was Jewish as Edison was rabidly Anti-Semitic. The writer is not sure exactly when he understood he was a Jew, but it probably came sometime after he realized he was an American. "By the time you were seven or eight, you were beginning to catch on. Jews were invisible, they had no part to play in American life, and they never appeared as heroes in books or films or television shows."

This book would have been incredible if it consisted of only the first section. But we have more although nothing in the rest of the book is quite as good as this part. In the second section "Two Blows to the Head" Mr. Auster remembers two films from his youth that left indelible impressions on him: "The Incredible Shrinking Man" and "I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang." The third section "Tim Capsule" consists of letters he wrote to his first wife Lydia Davis when he was a first young man while a student at Columbia, living both in New York and Paris. We get inside the head of a young man in love who is against the war in Vietnam and anxious about being called up for the draft. Finally he writes to Ms. Davis of his early attempts at becoming a writer.

original approach to an autobiography from a writer who excels in fiction

It occurs to me that I should state that I read almost every book Paul Auster ever written. In fact, I first stumbled on him as a writer when I picked up a copy of "Timbuktu" browsing through library stacks in college. "Timbuktu" was the book I had planned to write post graduation, only Auster had better plot, writing, and execution.

I proceeded to read every book he wrote up until "Timbuktu". I kept revising Auster's characters, some of whom stayed with me (particularly, the protagonist of "In The Country of Last Things").

I remember reading in an interview with Auster when he stated that the characters take over him brain and make him tell their stories. When he sits down to write he doesn't know what will happen, he just lets his characters develop and progress.

Auster is one of the best contemporary novelists today, but in recent years his work has turned even more autobiographical than before. It was one thing to write novels that had elements of his life, It's all-together different to write an autobiography.

For that is what Auster does in his latest book, "Report from the Interior." In his latest book, Auster continues to explore themes that are important to him - his childhood, his loves, his relationship with his parents. Auster has always been huge on self-identity and self-exploration. In this novel, he looks upon himself in the second-person. The book ends with intimate letters to the woman who would become his first wife.

This is probably the most original viewpoint one can give his readers in an autobiography. The "you do this, you feel this," draws the reader in. There is a lot of buy-in; a reader must determine fairly quickly whether he is willing to put the time investment to read it.

Out of the previous ten Auster novels I read, each took me hours, several days at the most, to read. "Report from the Interior" took me weeks. Why the discrepancy? Although it is a unique approach to retelling your story, the second-person usage is often cumbersome to read.

Because I judge books by how engaging they are, I can't give this book its full five stars.

Highly enjoyable and recommended

Collection includes several compositions generally found only separately--such as 'Street of Dreams'. Further, arrangements are definitely intermediate skill level, not requiring advanced training or technique. The only reason I even hesitate on 'Five Stars' is that some arrangements are not the original, and not credited as arrangements--for example, 'Summertime' (Gershwin, from 'Porgy and Bess') is in key of A minor, where a longtime friend who is an authority on Gershwin assures me the original is in B minor , and tells me this accompaniment is somewhat simplified from original version. I found these standards very enjoyable even if not necessarily all original. This item continues my respect for the Hal Leonard corporation and their publications.

Given the current reliance on smartphones, readers will have no trouble believing that virtual escape is addictive. Orexis falsifying data and endangering users to protect their bottom line is sadly also realistic. These elements, combined with the teen romance, ground the book's more fantastical aspects, such as Patrick's redesigned trippy escapes and Regan's experiences within upgraded Elusion. Unfortunately, the young scientist's characteristics and actions take on a cartoonish quality. The occasional use of swear words makes this better suited for older readers. Pithy dialogue and a cliffhanger ending will leave fans in high anticipation for the sequel. Plot, Where Are You?!

An Open Letter To Elusion,

Okay, so this letter isn't going to be one of those warm and fuzzy love fests, I just thought I'd let you know that right now. For a book, you didn't have much of a plot. Honestly, I felt like a two year old at Easter, trying to find an egg and no one would stop what they were doing to help me get my hands on one. That's how hard it was to find your plot. I just don't know where it was. And in the end I didn't even get candy out of it. Major party foul book, party foul!

I wanted to like this one, but alas that didn't end up being the case. Gabel and Klam actually managed to build a decently interesting world, but a book can't survive on that alone. Both writers seem like they are tech savvy ladies and that showed in how they wrote the book. This will be a wonderful thing for some people. I have to admit that even though I am a nerd at heart, all the tech talked bogged down the little bit of story that filled this book. Sure it was well detailed, but it just didn't flow right (IMO).

The descriptions of the world were also detailed, even if they were a bit flowery. Stepping inside of Elusion was fun. I enjoyed those bits of the book. I also liked how dark Detroit was when the characters weren't in the virtual world. The contrast really worked for me.

That being said, there was almost no plot in this book. It felt like I was just reading about tech building, seeing what Elusion looked like and following Regan around her daily life. The same bits of plot kept being brought up over and over again. But the book didn't really go anywhere until the last 20% (I was reading an eARC) and even then, it didn't really blow me away and I saw the ending coming a mile away. Also, I'm not sure if this is a series, but the book didn't really end. So, I'm hoping that the fans of this one get to finish the story and that wasn't the actual conclusion.

Oh, there was also this really weird love triangle. Now, don't get me wrong, I love a good love triangle when it's executed right and the thing is that this one wasn't. It felt like a plot point and too much of the book rested on these two boys. Josh and Patrick themselves had some good character traits, but seeing them through Regan's eyes didn't work for me. Which, I guess, means that Regan wasn't my favorite character. She felt too stereotypical to me. There wasn't anything that made her stand out to me.

In the end, I think that this book had a great foundation, but the execution and lack of plot took what could have been epic and turned into something that won't be sticking around in my mind for long.

Elusion

I loved the concept of Elusion and could easily visualize a world where every train ride, every cafe, and every home is filled with people who have abandoned human interaction in exchange for a virtual escape. With Elusion, you can spend your lunch break skiing in the mountains or soaking up the sun by the beach. This idea becomes even more appealing in a world where O2 shields are needed due to the poor air quality and oil-proof vinyl umbrellas protect you from the acid rain.

I enjoyed Elusion's storyline and the mystery involved. The protagonist, Regan, is the daughter of the man responsible for creating Elusion. When it's discovered that Elusion has the potential to be dangerous, Regan's initial reaction is to defend her deceased father's work. But when strange things begin happening to her and she starts to suspect that she is being told more lies than truths, Regan decides to discover the answers for herself.

The characters in this story weren't among the unique variety. They're characters that blend in with the rest of those in the YA genre so I'm finding that there really isn't much to say about them. There is a love triangle of sorts, but feelings aren't reciprocated on one end so you don't have to deal with reading about the typical back and forth thoughts on which boy is "the one".

Elusion is a unique young adult debut that should appeal to fans of both science fiction and fantasy. The ending is left wide open for a sequel and I'm definitely interested in finding out what happens next.

I know that they say you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but that is exactly what I did with this book. I saw it and I wanted it, not only because of the beautiful cover but I really liked the title and the concept of the book. The idea of having mental "escapes" isn't anything new, there have been quite a few YA books that features something like it, although always in different forms which makes reading them more exciting.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. As much as I loved her name, I couldn't connect with Regan, she was a little bit too polar for me to really feel her internal struggle because it didn't feel like there was one. She jumps from fiercely protecting her father's work to pulling a Benedict Arnold and switching sides at the last minute. I felt like she didn't struggle with it enough to warrant her just saying "Okay, this looks a little like proof, I'm on your side."

While the escapes were well built and interesting, I felt that the world that this book wasn't. We're told that the air quality is really bad, and it's hinted at some corporation, but there isn't much more than that. We know this is the future USA, and I know some authors will leave a date off to give the illusion that it is sooner than you thing, but there was nothing explaining how we got to this point and why the names of things were somewhat different, and how we started using tablets, and there was just nothing to support it.

There was naturally a love triangle that reared its ugly head, and I think Instalove was started to make an appearance, but then it backed down. I did appreciate how at one point one rival guy was like "YOU'VE KNOWN HIM FOR FOUR DAYS!" when she was picking a stranger over the guy she claimed was her best friend. The relationships weren't well developed, we saw that Patrick was Regan's best friend, but there wasn't too much of that going on. Then Josh comes out of nowhere and she's got all these fuzzy feelings for him.

This book was clearly left it open for another book, which I wouldn't be surprised if this turned out to be a trilogy. Also the love triangle was never resolved. So there is that, I haven't decided if I'm going to check the second book out since I was less than in love with this one, it's going to depend entirely on the cover and synopsis. This one is still worth checking out. It was a really quick read, so if you're interested and think you might like it check it out for sure.

Merridale, a specialist in Russian and Soviet history who teaches at Queen Mary University in London, shows how much of Russia’s often tortured, bloody history was due to top-down decisions by rulers from Ivan the Terrible to Stalin. She does an excellent job of integrating that history, the actions of the rulers, and the building and rebuilding of the Kremlin. From the inception of the complex, it seemed to reflect the desire of Russian rulers to convey a sense of both centralized power and stability. About the Author

Catherine Merridale is the author of the critically acclaimed Ivan's War: Life and Death in the Red Army, 1939–1945, and Night of Stone: Death and Memory in Twentieth-Century Russia. Disappointed

I bought this book after reading several glowing reviews. I live in Moscow very near the Kremlin, so expected to learn many interesting facts about the place.

Unfortunately, in this I was disappointed. My main gripes:

1) at least in the kindle version, there are virtually no maps or pictures (other than on illegible map of the kremlin at the beginning). At least half the book (more on that later) consists of descriptions of the features, locations, and appearance of the Kremlin and many of the buildings constructed within it, but all of that is left to our imagination, and there are no pictures, drawings, etc. to illustrate what the author is talking about. It is possible that the print version has these illustrations, and if so, this criticism would not apply to it.

2) In addition to a history of the Kremlin, the book presents a rather episodic and uneven history of Russia. While this is unavoidable to a certain extent, much of this content really has nothing to do with the Kremlin and seems to have been inserted as a sort of primer on Russian history, in which role it falls short. In my view, much of this material should have either been excluded altogether or expanded to be more comprehensive.

3) I walk through Red Square on an almost daily basis, but after reading this book don't feel that I have any better understanding of the various buildings on the square. What's the story behind the construction of GUM, the massive department store opposite the Kremlin on Red Square? Not addressed... Similarly, what renovations have been done to the various towers over the centuries, and what specific role have they played, what significant events have occurred in them? Addressed, sort of, but not in a very user-friendly or comprehensive way. Maybe I was expecting something more like a tour guide on steroids, but this book is not it.

4) a good portion of the book is dedicated to arcane religious issues and disputes. While I fully expected this, and indeed it is pretty much unavoidable when writing a history of the Kremlin, I found these sections extremely tedious. This is not a criticism of the author--you can only make some issues so interesting--but I did want to point it out to other potential readers.

To be fair, this is not a bad book as long as people come into it with the right expectations , so for that reason I've tried to be pretty specific about why I didn't care much for it, so that other readers can make their own judgments.

Red Fortress is a detailed popular history of Moscow's famous Kremlin by an expert on Russia

"Kremlin" is the Red Fortress sitting on the Moscow River. For over eight hundred years the citadel has stood at the very heart of Russian's lengthy and bloody history of ruthless terror, persecution and dictatorship. The Kremlin has seen rulers come and go from Ivan the Terrible to Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, the Romanov Tsars (the first Romanov ruler began to rule Russia in 1613;l the dynasty lasted until the murder of Tsar Nicholas II and his entire family at the hand of the Bolsheviks in 1918). The most interesting part of the book, to this reviewer, was the last part of the long book in which the author deals with the rule of Stalin, Khruschev, Andropov, and the last Soviet ruler Gorbachev. She also has important points to make about Boris Yeltsin and his corrupt government and the autocratic present day rule of Putin.
Dr. Catherine Merridale is a British Scholar who has written extensively on Russia. I have read her earlier book "Ivan's War" concerning Soviet troops in World War II which I found of great historical interest. This interest led me to this new volume. It is presented in a dry and academic style. Many pages are devoted to the various churches, cathedrals, palaces and meeting rooms included within the wide and forbidding Kremlin walls. Much of this material will be new to Western readers with many finding the information to be dull and quickly forgotten!
To tell the story of the Kremlin is to tell the story of Russia that enigma wrapped inside a mystery. The book though dry contains valuable material for anyone interested in Russia, the Kremlin and the leaders of this large and important country.

Having spent my share of time under my school desk waiting for the powers of the Kremlin to send an atomic bomb, I have a deep seated curiosity for the stories of the Red Fortress. "The Kremlin is one of the most famous structures in the world." It has ever been a place designed to suggest historically rooted power. This book traces its inception in the earliest days of the rude, swampy Moscow to the present time. It is a landmark that has endured multiple incarnations, burning almost to the ground more than once. Lasting monuments have been wrecked to make room for other buildings fated to fall. This book traces both the structure of the Kremlin and the historic context of its changing legend.

The book has a slow start with the discussion of early Russia and it's swiftly changing rulers. The list of buildings and the sweep of change becomes a blur of names and construction. Somewhere around the emergence of the early Tsars, the story takes a more engaging shape and pulls the reader into the romance of a fortress and its people. I admit the book became truly bewitching to me with the entrance of the Soviets, and ironically their demolition of much its precious history. The stories from behind the scenes of Stalin's windswept end granite fort make for a clear dissertation on the intersection of the image and the building. This is the beginning of era of the iron tipped parades of May Day projected to the Western World.

This book has undertaken a huge task with the vagaries of a vast history and its mythologies. This book is intricate in its record of the entwining of the Kremlin and its people. In its turn, it beguiles the reader and delivers an encompassing history with graceful commentary and an author's clear affection for her subject. Past the collapse of the Soviet, Russia remains a source of foreign mystique, and its star still rest in the Red Fortress.
