Scholarship That's Meant To Be Read

It's difficult to imagine the time and effort that Jane Ridley devoted to her book The Heir Apparent, a long and painstakingly detailed biography of King Edward VII of England. The author has a career-long commitment to studying the history of Great Britain and its monarchs, and delving into archives that had been untouched for a century or more must have been extremely exciting. The author, I'm sure, found her work especially satisfying since discovery of new documentation was due, in good part, to her efforts to make the biography as accurate and complete as possible. When the portrait that emerged from her decade-long study of this massive collection of forgotten or previously ignored sources came to constitute a substantial revision of long-standing assumptions about the role and importance of Edward VII, I'm certain that Ridley was thrilled. She had created something genuinely new: a picture of early 20th Century England that differed significantly from other interpretations.

The eldest son of long-reigning Queen Victoria, the youthful Edward VII, then known as the Prince of Wales and nicknamed Bertie, showed little promise as a prospective British monarch. Insofar as his future required disciplined intelligence and scholarly cultivation, the transition from the high-sounding but devoid-of-duties Prince of Wales to the demanding role of King in a constitutional monarchy seemed a move that Bertie was sure to bungle. Ignorant and ineffectual monarchs are commonplace throughout European history, but the proud Victoria had hoped to produce something much better.

Ironically, the length of Victoria's reign and her lack of confidence in Bertie both contributed to turning him into a womanizer, hard-luck gambler, world-class glutton, and general purpose do-nothing. After all, there were no obligations, whether legally prescribed or traditionally observed, to impose purposeful activity on the Prince of Wales. In the absence of special talents to develop, interests to pursue, or the Queen's request for his assistance, becoming a royal playboy seemed a predictable way to go. The fact that Victoria inexplicably blamed her beloved husband's death on his knowledge of Bertie's first sexual misadventure only made matters worse. Victoria went into permanent mourning, withdrawing from public life, but refused to step aside for Bertie's ascendance to the throne. Without purpose, Bertie drifted into a pattern of dissipation that endured even after he married Princess Alexandra of Denmark.

Bertie's redemption, as Ridley sees it, came after Victoria's death, during his relatively brief time as King. Though he persisted in his sexual adventurism and otherwise gave pride of place to pleasure, his social and political skill in working with others in comparably high positions finally came to the fore. While the King had little power in a constitutional monarchy, especially after Victoria's long and reclusive reign, the author lauds him for the personal persuasive force that he exerted at the highest levels both at home and abroad. Ridley credits Edward VII with with providing the decisive influence that led to the joining of Great Britain, France, and Russia in the entente cordiale, a united front that soon faced the evermore bellicose Germany in World War I. As Ridley sees it, had it not been for the social aptitude, natural charm, and instinctive political acumen of Edward VII, Europe might have become a very different and hostile place, with implications for today that might have been profound.

It is with regard to these latter developments that Ridley parts company with other scholars in that she gives what she judges to be long overdue credit to Edward VII for his behind-the-scenes diplomatic accomplishments. Other observers have noted little difference between the sybaritic Prince of Wales and King Edward VII. Whether or not Ridley is right, she makes a strong case that the playboy Prince became a dutiful and hardworking King, in spite of his continued self-indulgence.

Inevitably, a biography of Edward VII will be loaded with titillating gossip. Sometimes, I think, Ridley includes too much of this, and the reader's attention begins to wane. Nevertheless, her descriptions of how the Prince and then King spent his spare time are historically illuminating. The accounts of shooting vacations bespeak an unacknowledged cruelty and perversion of sportsmanship beyond anything I've previously imagined. Now I know why members of the aristocracy often owned enormous tracts of wooded land and employed game keepers. On a typical shooting day, it was not at all uncommon for ten or twenty blue-bloods armed with shotguns to kill more than a thousand pheasants or grouse, driven towards them as they waited in their stands to shoot indiscriminately at a veritable cloud of birds. The disposition of the products of such a slaughter is not told.

Whether or not one construes such a grotesque activity as sport, it speaks volumes as to the resources available to the high born and wealthy. Edward VII's one reported glimpse of the condition of the poor in England left him shaken and horrified. Clearly, he had never imagined such misery and degradation, and to his credit, as King he devoted a good deal of effort to charitable ventures. Nevertheless, the gluttony, bed-hopping, and high-priced cruises and vacations taken for granted by Edward VII and his kind stood in the sharpest possible contrast to the lives of most of the population of Great Britain. This is well known, but Ridley displays it so graphically that it takes on new meaning.

Edward VII was a man of his time. I think the author may have unwittingly exaggerated his accomplishments as King, but she does show us forcefully that he was a wounded soul who had been treated with inexcusable, neurotic cruelty by his mother, and that was something that stayed with him.

There is so much information in this well written book that a review can give it only a cursory gloss. Whether intended or not, the author's treatment of Edward VII's life leaves the reader with a renewed and sobering appreciation of the finite nature of our time on earth, and the eventful and changing character of a fairly long life course. The Heir Apparent is long and extremely detailed, but I found reading it well worth the time and effort.

Polacco (Clara and Davie) adds to her library of autobiographical stories with this tale about her Irish forebear Fiona, who learns lace making when her mother’s once-expert hands are stricken with arthritis. Fiona’s father, Mick, tells his children about finding his way to their mother’s house for the first time by following scraps of lace. Not long after they leave Ireland for Chicago, the chaos of the Great Chicago Fire separates Fiona and her sister Annie from their parents, and Fiona helps her parents find them by cutting up her own precious lace to leave a similar trail. While the story occasionally bogs down in detail and the Irish dialect can be a bit over the top (“Such talk, Mick.... You’ve been kissin’ the Blarney”), Polacco’s valuable portrait of hardship in Ireland and her descriptions of the unjust working conditions that émigrés encountered in the U.S. (“Remember, they are chargin’ us rent for the rattrap we live in—they own it! And they’ll be levying for your uniform as well”) supplies a gritty picture of the immigrant experience. The prestige Fiona’s precious skill brings her is a revelation, too. Ages 4–8. (Aug.) When the textile mill in Glen Kerry, Ireland, is closed, Fiona’s family accepts passage to Chicago to work as servants for the family who paid their fares.

Fiona spends the endless journey making lace as her mother taught her. She and her sister, Ailish, love the oft-told story of how their father met their mother, when she tied bits of her lace in a trail from the mill to her home so he could be introduced properly. Since the family gets no wages until they pay off their passages, the parents must take other jobs after hours, but Fiona’s lace finds a market, and the family is able to save toward buying land in Michigan. But one evening, when Fiona is making lace and her parents are out working, a fire (the great Chicago fire of 1871) breaks out near their tenement. Fiona and Ailish escape with the lace, which Fiona uses to mark a path so their parents can find them, just as their father found their mother. Polacco weaves her themes well: immigrant history, family lore, poverty and oppression, and hope for the future. The greens of Ireland are beautifully pictured, and the dun and gray of the Chicago tenements are brightened by the sweetness of the lace patterns and the girls’ red hair.

The most compelling feature of this well-crafted immigrants’ story is how it might inspire adults to share

their own family stories with their kids. Polacco, who is of Russian Ukrainian and Irish descent, uses the

experiences of her Irish ancestors to tell this story of a poor lace-making family in Ireland who, after the

closing of the local mill, decide they must journey to America. It is a familiar immigrant story of expecting

riches but meeting hardship, but told with admirable economy and effectiveness, especially at showing the

Irish women as indentured servants of a wealthy family in Chicago. The climax is the Great Chicago Fire,

which we see from the perspective of Fiona and her little sister, who are alone at home. Fiona grabs some

precious lace, executing a nifty reunion of the scattered family, leading to a wonderful resolution. There is

quite a lot happening here, and Polacco handles it with aplomb, offering up clear, detailed prose and

hardscrabble watercolor illustrations that drive home both rural and urban struggles. (Booklist September 1, 2014)

Patricia Polacco belongs to a family of storytellers, poets, farmers, teachers, and artists. They came from many parts of the world, but mainly Russia. Okay, this one made me cry! An endearing Irish story.

It is not very often a children's book brings tears to my eyes, but this one did. This is an Irish story. First dad tells the story about how mom's trail of lace led him to her door. Then the story is about how the family had to leave Ireland for America and how poor the conditions were once they arrived. But Fiona, the daughter, has learned how to make fine Irish lace from her mother. She is able to sell it to help her family. But tragedy strikes when fire comes to their town and the children become separated. Fiona uses her mom's idea when their dad courted her. She cuts pieces of the lace and leaves a trail for mom and dad to find them. Inside the back cover is the final story of those pieces of lace and how they were passed down in the family as cherished family keepsakes.

This is a wonderful piece of Irish history. It includes the Irish emigration to America as well as a bit about Irish lace. They talk with an Irish brogue so you get a real sense of their world. This book would be an asset to any classroom for the history piece. It also talks about how the lace was passed down through generations. There is not as much passing down of things anymore. I hope this book inspires this tradition once again.

The illustrations are colorful and detailed. I love how the inside cover shows a piece of Irish lace. Handmade Lace making is also a tradition that I hope grows again.

Lovely Illustrations and Well Written Story

I purchased this book because my granddaughter's name is Fiona. And for many years she lived in Ireland. But I didn't know what the story-line would be until I received my copy yesterday. The story is about Fiona's family--parents and younger sister--coming to America and how Fiona's lace-making saved them from a disaster in Chicago. The illustrations are absolutely wonderful. I highly recommend it as a great book for children.

A lovely story about a talented Irish lass.

Here's a lovely picture book about a young determined girl and her gift as a lace maker. Not only does she help out her family but the lace making comes in handy when the Chicago fire strikes and the family is separated. Perfect for St. Patrick's Day or any day for that matter.

He doesn't win, but instead becomes a local hero when his lounge-chair-turned-sled takes a death-defying tumble. Mary is not impressed, but the new kid Bruce Littledood notices and threatens to reveal a dark secret about Mary and Ferrell's families. Set in a fictional town, Gill's novel uses real events and people from Colorado history as the foundation for this modern story. In 1874, Alfred Packer was accused of murdering and eating his five traveling companions while stuck in a snowstorm. In this story, Ferrell is Packer's great-great-great-nephew, while Mary is the great-great-great-granddaughter of one of the cannibalized men. The historical connection is intriguing, but the unrealistic plot and unbelievable characters are not. Told from Ferrell's perspective, the narration and dialogue often feel forced, and the undeveloped characters lack dimension while navigating improbable situations. Littledood's sudden change of heart and the heavy-handed delivery of the moral makes for a trite ending. The back matter includes a bit of information about the historical characters, but lacks a bibliography. As we meet 12-year-old Ferrell, he is reluctantly building a sled to use in the upcoming day-after-Christmas Big Sled Race on Golden Hill. Mary, his best friend and, lately, his heartthrob, has convinced him to compete. His homemade sled (a lawn chair superglued to mismatched skis) does well until he hits a bump; Ferrell flies through the air, turns flips, lands at the bottom of the hill, and becomes a hero for his daring exploits. However, it is Bruce Littledood who has actually won the race, and now he is out to get revenge because Ferrell stole the spotlight. A rematch is scheduled after Ferrell and Mary realize that classmate Bruce (a master genealogist) knows their deep dark secret (it involves a bit of cannibalism in the family history). The outcome is predictable, but the action, suspense, and pure fun of getting down the hill is worth the trip. A brilliant find - kids will eat it up!

Kids in upper-elementary and lower-middle school will love this book. It is a perfect blend of elements that will keep boys and girls engaged. Weaving historical allusions, an unpredictable plot, unusual themes (Cannibalism??? What kid can resist that?), and amazing words - it kept me smiling and my kids laughing out loud (both the male 10-year-old and female 12-year-old). As a middle school teacher, I'm excited to add it to my shelves.

I found this book to be humorous, educational and unusual in the topics of the plot. Ferrell has many thoughts common to a young man but with a less serious focus than most. All this and you might learn new words, too! I am a Ferrell fan!

Disclaimer: I know the author, who is a wonderfully lovely person. However, my sons (ages 9 and 12 and big fans of the Wimpy Kid books) do NOT know the author and they LOVED this book. They ate it up (pun intended!) In fact, yesterday while riding in the car, my 12 year old said, out of the blue, "Hey Mom, that Ferrell Savage Book is cool." You can't get a better review than that!

He’s barely settled in from the animal shelter, when “Shoe Dog chewed through five high heels, four flip-flops, three sneakers, two boots, one wing tip,” reports Judy Moody author McDonald, who last collaborated with Tillotson on It’s School Picture Day! Neither his owner’s repeated cries of “BAD DOG!” nor the thought of being sent back to “the Land of Sad Puppies and Scratched-Up Cats and One-Eared Bunnies” can discourage Shoe Dog’s gleefully relentless footwear search-and-destroy missions. But what if Shoe Dog discovered a shoe of his own—one that brought out his best, kindest instincts? An irrepressible dog can’t resist falling into the same type of mischief over and over again, until something surprising changes his pattern.

This small, wiggly pup bounces upward as a silhouetted woman enters the animal shelter. He longs for a home “warm as soup / and cozy as pie,” full of nose kisses and tummy rubs. And oh, how exciting—the woman takes him home! “That very day, / Shoe Dog chewed through / five high heels, / four flip-flops, / three sneakers, / two boots, / one wing tip.” Scolding—“ ‘BAD DOG!’ / She, Herself said”—and punishment—no petting or access to the Big Bed—see him lying forlornly in a gray-blue space, subdued. But each time new shoes arrive, he tracks down and rips into the fresh box, chomping every shoe with gusto. Consequences ratchet up mildly, but Shoe Dog never learns impulse control as such; instead, unexpectedly, he meets a shoe he’d never, ever chew. Finally he’s welcome “on the Big Bed / in the Land of Upstairs,” curling up blissfully with his new shoe-love. Tillotson uses thick black lines for Shoe Dog’s scribbly, coiled-spring body, smudging charcoal inside his shape to give him substance; scraps of pink and beige mark his pointy ears and muzzle. Motion lines show how he scampers and bounds. The visual angle varies, and shoe-box tissue paper flies through the air.

Unusual art and cool story make Shoe Dog a fun read.

You'll discover that this book is lots of fun to read out loud. That fact along with an unusual artistic rendering of the central character (see book cover) make SHOE DOG a memorable bedtime story. If the child is too young he or she may not totally understand the way the artist presents the puppy so I'd suggest you try this picture book with a slightly older child...say one four or five.

Another approach is to have your child look at the cover of the book on line and ask if he/she knows what that is. If the answer is "a puppy" then ask, "Do you want to read about that little puppy?" At that point you'll know if this would be a good purchase. I think it is but let your child provide a little guidance.

Gr 3-5–Inaccurate illustrations and oversimplified text make this a poor choice for either assignments or leisure reading. Attempting to cover all Native American history from the first inhabitants onward results in unfortunate generalizations, and in many places the author characterizes all Native Americans as a group rather than providing information about specific people or nations. While the tone is sympathetic, Kavin occasionally uses dated stereotypes. Similarly, the interior images include black-and-white cartoons that border on caricature, as in the illustration of long-haired, feather-headdress-wearing, mostly shirtless men sitting outside teepees. Clothing and hairstyles in the sketchy drawings appear to conflate dissimilar cultures and time periods, and most lack explanatory captions. The 15 projects range from silly (watching ice cream melt in order to understand the ice age) to highly unlikely, at least for most urban children (making a life-size travois with poles twice as long as a child is tall). a lot of material

I started to read through the entire book but had to go back and 'digest each little piece, bit by bit, in order to fully learn and take in each part. This book is so chocked full of enriching exercises that build upon each other, that you must practice and learn each piece before moving to the next to fully assimilate what you have read. The 'color meditation' is so simple yet effective that I faithfully practice it morning and night. After a short period of time doing the color meditation, my once-high blood pressure has returned to normal levels without medication! The 'unan pattern' is a simple yet highly effective way to ramp up the techniques learned in the first Quantum Touch book. I highly recommend this book to everyone that has been practicing basic QT.

Awesome!

I've attended this workshop in person a few years ago, led by Alain Herriott, and it was just amazing. I learned so much. This book helps to jog my memory about the different Quantum Touch techniques. Quantum Touch is about using your breath to send your love/energy to another person/animal for healing. It works! Anything coming from Alain Herriott is going to be awesome. He's the most gentle, compassionate, wise soul I've ever known. Yes, I guess I'm quite a fan! Pick up this book, it's worth it. I suggest reading the first book Quantum-Touch by Richard Gordon (another loving precious soul) first. Then, reading this book.

Exciting New Methods

I read the basic book (Quantum-Touch: The Power to Heal by Richard Gordon) and attended a basic Quantum Touch class, in addition to some training in another method. I'd also read energy medicine books, on other modalities, and was ready for the next step. So I ordered this book.

As I work my way though this book, I've found it to be of great assistance. I had started exploring energy medicine as a way to assist my pets with several health issues. To date, I have had phenomenal (documented) success. However, doing treatments, on multiple pets, on a daily basis is very time consuming. This book outlines methods that provide energy medicine assistance in a longer-lasting format.

I highly recommend it for any student or practitioner of energy medicine.

About the Author
Kenneth Mackenzie was born in 1913 in South Perth. His parents divorced in 1919, and
thereafter he lived with his mother and maternal grandfather. A sensitive child, he developed a
love of nature and dislike of noise during time spent at Pinjarra, in rural Western Australia.

Unhappy years boarding at Guildford Grammar School were the basis for his highly acclaimed
first novel, The Young Desire It, which was published in London in 1937. By that time Mackenzie had studied law, worked as a journalist and moved from Perth to Sydney, where he was employed as a reviewer, met the leading lights of the literary scene and married.

Mackenzie's subsequent novels were The Chosen (1938), Dead Men Rising (1951), based partly on his experience of the Cowra breakout — he was deemed unfit for active service in the war — and The Refuge (1954); he also produced two volumes of poetry. He received a number of grants and awards, including the Australian Literary Society Gold Medal.

His last years were spent alone, in declining health and succumbing to drink, at Kurrajong, near
the Blue Mountains. In 1955 he died accidentally while bathing in a creek.

The 11-page introduction by David Malouf is both very insightful and quite informative about the author. At fifteen, Charles Fox, serious, intense, sensitive and introspective, is sent to boarding school in the city where he meets, for the first time, other boys of his own age, is taught by young English Masters and lives an unfamiliar, regimented existence. During a longed-for break back home, he encounters Margaret, spending her school break on a neighbouring farm, and falls passionately in love. On the surface, it may seem that not much happens in this novel, but a great deal occurs within, as Charles matures and realises "a mind continually awakening to its own innocence." The narration lies mostly with Charles, but also jumps between a fellow student, Mawley, the young Master who befriends Charles, Penworth, Charles's mother, and Mr Jolly, and this can sometimes lead to confusion until the context or content clarifies the matter. While this novel touches on paedophilia, masturbation and sex between minors, as befits a novel written in the 1930's, these aspects are merely hinted at, so some reading between the lines is required, and here Malouf's introduction is helpful also. This novel's great strength is the wonderful prose. Mackenzie captures the West Australian summer with consummate ease: "The whole earth and all nature sank into a still swoon beneath the eternal ravishment of the sun, and the ceaseless, passionate susurrus of the insects gave sound to the heat, as already mirage was giving it a shaking visibility, clear and refractory like water." and his prose has universal appeal. His descriptions are sometimes verbose, sometimes beautifully succinct: "They smiled with the sincerity of cats." His descriptions of characters, too, are marvellous: "It was a humorous and kindly face, mobile from much talking and an inexhaustible ability to express surprise; the lines around the sly keenness of the eyes showed how often laughter closed them." This edition has gorgeous cover art by W.H. Chong. Text do well to include this beautiful novel under their Classics banner: it was the Winner of the 1937Australian Literature Society Gold Medal and is indeed a timeless Australian classic.

The rich mother of a sheltered, Australian teen, abruptly decides to end his home-tutoring and plunges the boy into an in-country English-style boarding school. His hazing is harsh but a lonely British teacher, noticing the boy's vulnerability, "lends a hand" while fighting his own homeric proclivities. When a girl enters the boy's life, there is fight for his soul. The author based the novel on his own experiences and expresses his teen angst well, but the long passages of description show its dated form.

A treasure from from the 1930's.

This is a novel written by an author in the 1903's who is almost forgotten these days. It was recommended for republishing in the 'Text Classics' . It is a beautifully written novel about the coming of age of a young lad in rural Australia. It is unusual that it is set in a country setting. It describes the boys experiences at his home on a remote property and at a fashionable private school. The usual teenage angst and bewilderment and exploration of relationships at school and his first romantic experience have been very sensitively dealt with. It is well worth the read.
