Dr. Joseph Harris, author of the "Get Ready!" books for Grades 1, 2, and 4, holds a Ph.D. in psychology from the Graduate Training Program in School Psychology at the University of South Carolina. He is an adjunct professor in psychology at Converse College.Carol Turkington, series editor, specializes in developmental psychology. Her articles on parenting and health have appeared in "Parents", "Psychology Today", and the "New York Times".

Harris has extensive postdoctoral training in pediatric neuropsychology and learning disabilities and has worked as a school district psycholgist,, special education director, psychological researcher, child and adolescent psychotherapist, crisis intervention specialist, and behavior management consultant for more than 25 years. Within 25 pages, 18-year-old Vivi's parents have been viciously murdered, with her father's heart ripped from his body by what Vivi and her aunt Juliana can only assume was one of their own kind. Vivi has spent the majority of her life denying her heritage, but with the mystery shrouding her parents' deaths and her newfound family in New Orleans, immersing herself in the Haguari way of the life may be the only way to solve the murders. The narrative moves swiftly, engaging readers with a rich backstory of the Haguari people and the omnipresent fear and apprehension that accompanies Vivi throughout the story. This is no Shiver(Scholastic, 2009) by Maggie Stiefvater, although the writing is equally strong. Darkest Fear is not a paranormal romance. Rather, this is about family, self-discovery, and accepting one's differences whether they are inherited or self-determined. Those looking for interspecies love will likely be disappointed, though the groundwork is certainly there for a love interest or two in the next installment. Slow but still fun; more like what I want from NA

The sole reason I wanted Darkest Fear can be summed up in one word: jaguars. I'm a huuuuge fan of the admittedly sucktacular American football team the Jacksonville Jaguars, so once I heard about this novel and the jaguar people in it, I knew I needed it. This is poor methodology for picking out books and I don't recommend it, but you know what? It worked this time. Darkest Fear is a great start to a new series and something YA readers--maybe even NA readers--will find refreshing.

Honestly, Darkest Fear is less YA, more NA, but not because of anything steamy. The romantic elements are actually very low-key, limited to two guys who would like to get in bed with Vivi and one of those guys getting a swoony kissing scene or two with her. It's NA as it should be: the story of someone figuring out their life when high school ended so recently. Vivi's parents are murdered on her eighteenth birthday and she moves from Florida to New Orleans so she can find some long-lost family, figure stuff out, and blaze her own trail. It just so happens that the whole she's-a-jaguar-person thing is among the stuff she has to figure out.

Readers get to know Vivi and her newfound family very well over the course of the book, but it can get a little boring at times. The cast gets a little too large to keep track of outside the main characters and there's less jaguaring, more job-searching, working, and everyday stuff at times. The slow pacing is usually forgivable since Vivi's resistance to her own nature is why there's not much jaguaring on her end. If I wanted to complain about that, I'd be saying I want Vivi to not be who she is and that's nothing close to what I want. Vivi as she is in this novel is a great main character and she's only going to get better!

So for the most part, Vivi's living her life as she comes to accept her heritage among one a cast with diverse sexual orientations and racial/ethnic identities will satisfy. Darkest Fear's only major issue is how it's too much set-up and feels incomplete. So many conflicts are introduced and other than Vivi's resistance to her nature, not a single one is resolved. This sounds like a strange complaint for the first book in a series, but when you turn the last page in a book and feel like there are at least three chapters missing to help resolve, there's something wrong.

The second book is definitely close to the top of my 2015 TBR now. The wait will be long, but I can finally give Tiernan's highly-praised Immortal Beloved books in the meantime! I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who would like a YA novel where the paranormal element isn't overpowering or an NA novel that isn't a contemporary romance with questionable love interests--or someone who wants something that borders on both. Darkest Fear is just that much of an enjoyable, versatile read.

This series revolves around 18 year old Vivi, who was left to fend for herself after her parents were murdered on her birthday. Like many girls her age, Vivi struggles with self confidence, self-worth, and her heritage. Although Vivi's heritage is a super natural one (human/Jaguar hybrid), anyone can relate to not being able to accept all aspects of their heritage. In an attempt to figure out how to put herself back together after her parents death, she moves to New Orleans to look for a long lost aunt. Here she unravels a bit more about the mystery around her parents death, makes new friends, gains new family and even finds a bit of romance. In my opinion, Vivi is a very believable and relatable character. I know that if I were to discover that I can turn into a jaguar at will at age 13 I would be thrilled like many other kids. However, Vivi's reluctance makes her the exception, which is why she is so interesting to read about. I agree that it would be nice to see her get a grip sometimes, but that is not really realistic. I know that if I were in her situation I would be crying just as much as she did ( maybe even more.)
Like many of Cate's other series, she keeps you wanting more. There were a couple of hot and steamy moments I would love to see more of. This books is very similar to Cate's immortal series, where she gives you just enough to hook you. I could not put this book down. I can't wait until the next book!

Remarque nailed it early on...

There seems to be a plethora of both novels and non-fiction books now about the ravages of war and its aftermath, describing both the physical and emotional scars, now that the world has gone through World War II, Vietnam, and scores of other wars. However, when Remarque was writing, there was very little literature of this sort. He nailed it early on, when the Allies were still celebrating their triumphs after the War to End All Wars, and no one outside Germany really cared what happened there. In the West, even today, we have been conditioned to think of Germany during the World Wars as an army of emotionless automatons who blindly followed orders and suffered no moral apprehension. This novel, and others by Remarque, show this to be untrue. The Germans died, cried, loved, lost, and suffered, both physically and emotionally, as much as any soldier of any army. This is the fitting sequel to "All Quiet on the Western Front" (Paul Baumer even gets a passing mention as the protagonists remember lost comrades), and while it lacks the grit and guts of Remarque's wartime novel, it shows the sense of loss, grief, and hopelessness felt by many on both sides after the Great War, and other wars as well.

One Soldiers Dream...

The Road Back, sequel to All Quiet on the Western Front, is a incredibly touching story of comrades returning from years at war to a society that neither wants to accept nor help them in their search for a meaningful life after war. This lost generation goes through life seeing no more purpose in living.
Remarque's incredible descriptive style leads the reader through turmoil in Germany, from food shortages, to political unrest, suicide, and murder, and yet at the same time he makes pauses to simply show some of the beauty left in the world. The characters are incredible and after putting down the book I felt that I had bonded with people I had only known for a couple of hundred pages and yet had been through so much with. Follow the comrades through tough times and their realizations about their own meanings of life.

What a Gem!

A wonderful mix of poetic and politics, idealism and romanticism, beautiful scenery and horrible flashbacks. You are never completely sure what is going to happen and you are not allowed to be led by any single event in the novel except life itself. Remarque hits on our own senses and emotions and gives us a rare opportunity to follow the affairs and thoughts of another being. Amazing

About the Author
Dr Bryn Caless is Senior Lecturer in Policing at Canterbury Christ Church University and author of, or contributor to, a number of Blackstone's texts, including on police practice and PCSOs. After an active military career, Bryn was appointed Head of HR for Kent Police and Director of the Kent Police College, where he served for eight years before returning to academic work and researching the roles and opinions of chief police officers in UK and in Europe. He is editor of Blackstone's PCSO Handbook and a contributor to Blackstone's Police Operational Handbook: Practice and Procedure. Patricia (Trish) McCormack was a police inspector in charge of training for Special Constables in Kent Police until 2012 when she became an Associate Tutor at Canterbury Christ Church University. Barry Spruce is the Head of the Extended Policing Family department at Kent Police, which includes the Special Constabulary and he has co-authored a number of Blackstone's texts with Bryn Caless. Barry is currently studying for a PhD in Criminology at Canterbury Christ Church University, focusing on the extended policing family and the voluntary sector. Robert (Bob) Underwood is a Lecturer in Policing in the Department of Law and Criminal Justice Studies at Canterbury Christ Church University and a former Kent Police officer. Together with colleagues from both organizations he was responsible for the design of the Foundation Degree in Policing which formed the basis of initial police training and education in Kent. He contributes to several other books in the Blackstone's series, including Blackstone's Handbook for Policing Students and Blackstone's Police Operational Handbook: Practice and Procedure.

Lamentablemente no parece un libro serio que busque ayudar realmente a las personas que se pueden enfrentar a personas que utilizan el maltrato frecuentemente. Mas allá de describir abundantemente las características de una persona que maltrata (para lo cual utiliza terminos que me generan dudas con respecto a su verdadero significado), es falto de elementos practicos que puedan ser utilizados para abordar a estas personas. La verdad no pude ir mas allá de su primer capítulo, ya que me pareció una perdida de tiempo el continuar con su lectura.

Un libro con buenos consejos más de acuerdo con el discurso de algún pastor que con el de un sicólogo. De todas maneras resulta útil. Por momentos parece ser un collage de otros libros porque se ve alterado un poco el hilo de la narración.

Here is a book that's meticulously crafted, its prose evocative and lyrical-and almost excruciating to read. The eponymous protagonist and sometime narrator, an outsize boy considered simple, is the lone incorruptible character, an innocent adrift in a 20th-century Rake's Progress. Everyone else-from his drunken floozy of a mother and his drunken floozy of a sister (already a negligent mother at 17) to his shadowy father, Sneaky Pete-is, despite flashes of decency, irredeemably venal, selfish and manipulative. Lynch (Shadow Boxer) describes in unflinching detail a squalid, urban scene of mean-spirited ignorance, poverty, violence and offhand sex. Davey's heartrending closing vow, to "find somebody who's gonna love me and we're gonna have some babies and I'm gonna love 'em like hell to pieces like nobody ever loved babies before," magnifies the bleakness of the surrounding darkness. Grade 9 Up-Spanning the first 12 years of Davey's life, this book skillfully portrays the subject of childhood neglect and deprivation. Relegated to the care of his older sister, Davey spends hours in front of the television or riding aimlessly through the city on the mountain bike given to him by his deadbeat dad. Occasionally he accompanies his sister to the porch hangout of her dope-smoking friends or is dumped at a bar by his mom, where he is left in the charge of the bartender. Davey lives on macaroni and cheese and he rarely talks. His only friend (if you can call him that) is a local drug dealer who nicknames him Gypsy Davey. One day the friend is gone from the street with only the chalk outline of his dead body left. To complete this depressing cycle, Davey, before he is a teenager, becomes the caretaker of his sister's new baby. The characters are well drawn and elicit readers' concern. The dialogue crackles with realism including sporadic profanities. But the masterful prose is often overwhelmed by the brutal reality and the gloomy hopelessness of Davey's situation. Unlike his acclaimed novel, Shadow Boxer (HarperCollins, 1993), Lynch here gives us little to cheer about. Davey's father does return, but just for the warm months. And the rainbow in this story is found in an oily puddle of rainwater along the street gutter. In terms of literary quality, this work is outstanding. The book would inspire serious discussions in English classes, and, particularly with the guidance of a good teacher, will give worthwhile insights into parenting and family issues.

Gr. 9-12. Lynch's Shadow Boxer (1993) and Iceman can easily be labeled as coming-of-age novels. Such categorizing isn't quite as accurate for his latest, which has the distinct feel of adult fiction. Although filtered, in part, through the eyes of a young, "retarded" boy, Davey (2 years old at the outset and 12 at the close), the book is much more than a growing-up story. In fact, it's the wrangling within Davey's dysfunctional family, particularly between his needy, irresponsible mother, Lois, and his angry sister, Joanne, that holds readers fast. Davey, alternately loved and emotionally abused, is simply caught between the woman and the girl, a catalyst and an observer of their vitriolic relationship. That his mother and sister actually love him in their odd, selfish ways helps Davey develop an innate sense of the way things ought to be for his baby nephew, Dennis. His devotion to the child, whom he loves "like nobody ever loved babies before," is his way of speaking out against his own dreadful home life. Many questions go unanswered in the story, the plot is episodic, awkwardly so at times, and Davey's occasional stream-of-consciousness interjections seem forced. Yet the characters are finely drawn, and Lynch creates some fascinating parallels between Lois and Joanne who at the outset, seem so different. The depiction of Davey's surroundings is harsh and hauntingly realistic (casual sex, alcohol abuse, and street language are givens); loneliness and frustration seem, at first glance, the only things people can count on. It's Davey's surprising, artless ability to rise above it all and keep on going that proves first impressions wrong. Stephanie Zvirin

Told in various voices “Gypsy Davey” is the story of a dysfunctional family and one voice that rises up like a beacon of hope from the darkness in which it finds itself. That voice belongs to twelve-year-old Davey who is a special needs child. As a child, he barely talked and nothing seemed to bother him, including his mother’s bad habit of leaving him home alone at the age of two. By the time his sister Joanne was 7 years old, she had become his surrogate mother.

Joanne and Davey’s father doesn’t live with them but pops in for visits and sends money semi regularly. He claims to love them, berates their mother for beating them, is still desperately still in love with her, and yet can’t bring himself to live at home. He has itchy feet, spending time in Florida and various motels and doesn’t want to be tied down.

“Gypsy Davey” takes us through the sadness of their lives as Joanne changes into a mini version of her mother having her own child, Dennis, by age 17 who she proceeds to abuse. Dennis is the joy of Davey’s heart and, through his ministrations of love for this poor uncared for child, readers see Davey’s growth and maturity that far exceeds every member of his family.

Recommended for readers aged 14 and older who will feel their heart warming towards Davey, as did mine. (Previously published in 1994, “Gypsy Davey” is celebrating its 10th anniversary with this 2014 version.)

An Adolescent Adventure

Many middle-school students wish their parents would just leave them alone to make their own decisions. After reading the story of Davey's life, a student might think again. The freedom and neglect Davey lives with prevent him from doing well in school, forming good friendships and enjoying 'normal' activities. The adventures Davey experiences are interesting, funny and can help a reader to appreciate all that he/she has been given. Readers who enjoy reading about the realities of life, or think they have it tough may want to read this book. If a person liked Forest Gump, he/she will probably enjoy this novel.

Gypsy Davey was a pretty good book about a kid named Davey and how hard his life was. His dad isn't around and his mom drinks a lot and has a lot of boyfriends. His sister takes care of him mostly when he is little, but then when she is a teenager she has a baby. This story talks a lot about all the responsibilities that Davey has during his life, but it also talks about how the way he was raised helps him know how he wants to be as an adult. He wants to be a good father and have a good life.
