This is an excellent book for someone who already knows the basics of playing guitar, or for a guitar teacher who has taken a young student up to a reasonable general level but the student wants to learn Rock techniques.
The book includes many licks, riffs and cuts from songs from the 60's to the early 2000's. Versions of most of the songs used are available on uTube so the student can put the examples into context if required.

Chapter One
THE DARKNESS TOWARD THE EAST was thinning now. Still the owl’s cry drifted down the pathways of the forest, pale stars glimmered in the farthest gloom; but fox and marten paused from hunting, belly-deep in mist, and sniffed the coming dawn.

Trees, unwilling to awake, turned restless leaves; the birds that roosted in their branches opened round and sleepy eyes. A twig snapped suddenly.

“Who’s that?” a startled magpie cried. “Who’s that moving there?”

Her mate drew a sleepy head from under his wing.

“No one! Who could it be?” he chided her crossly. “Just worry, worry, worry, and it’s hardly dawn . . . !”

“We heard it, too, we did! There’s surely something coming!” the tomtits in the bushes whispered fearfully.

A blackbird tried a fluty note. A jay, inquisitive and unafraid, screeched cheerfully:

“It’s Faline, the roe-deer! Faline and her children!”

Crows came flapping from their nests.

“Faline!” they echoed disapprovingly. “She spoils her children. They have their own way in everything. Disgraceful!”

Faline turned her quiet brown eyes upward to the treetops.

“You see, Geno,” she said, “what they think of me? Now, be a good boy and stop whining.”

“But I’m tired. I want to lie down,” Geno complained.

“He’s not a bit tired!” His sister Gurri trotted close to her mother’s red-brown flanks. “It’s just because I ran faster than he did when I played his stupid old game. He’s an old sorehead!”

“I’m not a sorehead, and you can’t run as fast as I can! You’re just a girl, that’s all you are . . . !”

“I’d like to know what that’s got to do with it!” Gurri tossed her head and a shower of dewdrops fell gleaming from a low-hanging bush.

“Children!” Faline remonstrated soothingly.

“Well, Mother, if he wasn’t such a spoilsport! Boso and Lana wanted to go on playing, but he,” she mimicked him disparagingly, “he was so tired!”

Angrily Geno drummed his small hoofs on the winding path.

“You’ll see! I won’t show you any more games!”

“All right, I’ll make up my own!”

“You will!”

“All right, Boso will! He’s cleverer than you are and he’s nice!”

The crows flew away with great flapping of black wings.

“You see? What did we tell you!” they croaked scornfully. “Just listen to those children!”

“Nasty black things!” Geno scoffed. “If my father, Bambi, were here, he’d show you!”

“Ho, ho, ho!” chortled the crows. “Teach him manners, Faline!”

A woodpecker paused in his drumming at an old oak tree.

“That’s it, Faline,” he cried shrilly; “otherwise he’ll have no friends when he needs them.”

“The woodpecker’s giving good advice,” Faline told her son; but Geno interrupted her. He leaped away from the path-side, jostling his sister.

“Something’s coming through the bushes!” Black nostrils trembled; ears peaked toward the sound.

Faline regarded him placidly. “It’s only the polecat,” she told him. “He won’t hurt you. Don’t be frightened.”

“The polecat smells awful!” Gurri shied a little, nostrils closed.

“That’s how he protects himself. It’s good protection. He doesn’t have to run fast, or to watch forever, even in the most dangerous place.”

Bambi's story continues...

I had been looking forward to reading this for a long time after being blown away Felix Salten's previous book, Bambi. I understood from the Goodreads reviews and the premise that this was not going to be the soul-searing, powerful, sobering read I got from Bambi, so I prepared myself for a pleasant, reassuring little venture to rest my mind in between sections of The Lord of the Rings.

To a certain extent, I got what I expected. The mood of this book is much closer to Disney's actually pretty decent sequel (one of the very rare few to boast of such praise) Bambi 2 than to the original Bambi novel. It's occasionally melancholy, though generally hopeful and optimistic. It had been implied at the end of the first book that Bambi was going to become like his father, an often cold and distant figure who only comes into his children's lives after they had "come of age" and needed to learn the subtler ways of the forest. Here in Bambi's Children, Bambi is a very warm and caring father, taking on a much more present and active role in the rearing of his children besides just "watching from a distance". It's not very realistic for deer behavior, and it conflicts with the tone and message of the first book, but it's reassuring and heart-warming all the same.

The philosophical tone from the previous book is still somewhat present here, and the meaning of Man's role in Nature is thoughtfully discussed. While the heart-stopping "big reveal" at the conclusion of the previous book was much more of a poignant commentary on not only Man's role in Nature but the nature of Life and Death itself, Salten still has some wise things to say about his own species.

There is some "domestic drama" here, something about a misunderstanding between Faline and her stepsister that escalates to some needless spite and grudge-holding more suitable for a human soap opera than a story about a herd of deer. For the love of Pete! You're deer, not The Real Housewives! Get the hell over it and go graze in a meadow or something. I would have enjoyed this book much more if this unnecessary drama had been left out.

All the same, I enjoyed this and I'm happy to have finally gotten my hands on a copy of Bambi's Children. If you're a fan of all things Bambi, philosophical children's books, or just xenofiction/talking animal fantasy in general, definitely give this a read.

This was my favorite book when I was first learning to read

This was my favorite book when I was first learning to read, which is why I purchased it for a neighbor's child, who is having reading difficulties. I counted on the illustrations to capture her interest. Unfortunately, the edition I purchased didn't have the coveted illustrations, but only small black and white graphics, which is why I lopped off a star. While the story is the same as during my youth, it was the pictures that drew me in. From the book description I expected more in the way of the illustrations. Fair to say, I expected to much for such a small price.

A Very Poor Sequel, Unfortunately

Elsewhere I praised Salten's Bambi as "the greatest allegory ever written." I found Bambi's Children, not at Amazon, but at the local used book store and eagerly snatched it. I was greatly disappointed. About the only allegorical reference came at the end of the book when Faline had to send her children away, this just being the way of life. Other than that there wasn't much to the book except maybe Bambi trampling a kid hunter attempting to shoot as many deer as possible. It makes you feel good to see evil doers suffer.

Here's a supposition, partially borrowed from other reviewers. Bambi's Children was published about the time Disney was making his Bambi movie. Perhaps Salten just wanted to cash in with another book. Anyway if the dear reader is looking for more of the great insight into human affairs found in Bambi it ain't here. The original Bambi, not the Disney version, is so dang good it's almost unbelievable. Bambi's Children doesn't come close to the 1928 book. Save your money. I really wish it had been better.

Fossil Frenzy

1 Bad News
Joe Hardy’s clawlike fingers crept across the kitchen table and grabbed the helpless hot dog.

“ Roar!” he growled in his best dinosaur voice. He chomped down on the hot dog with his teeth and tore a piece off.

His brother, Frank, raised his eyebrows. “Uh, what are you supposed to be, exactly?”

“An ultrasaurus. Can’t you tell?” Joe said.

“Ultrasauruses are herbivores, remember? They only eat plants,” Frank pointed out.

“Oh.” Joe considered this. “I’m a T. rex, then. They’re carnivores, right?”

“Right. T. rex loves meat. Except they didn’t have hot dogs back then,” Frank joked.

Joe grinned. “Ha-ha.”

The two brothers had talked about nothing but dinosaurs all weekend. The next day they were going on a field trip to the Bayport Natural History Museum with their school’s science club. The museum was famous for its huge brachiosaur skeleton, and a bunch of other dinosaur artifacts too. The boys couldn’t wait!



Joe and Frank really liked the science club, which was led by science teacher Mr. Wachowski. Their good friends Phil Cohen and Chet Morton were in it. The other members were Tico Sanchez and Aisha Mehta from Frank’s fourth-grade class and Isobel Kaltman from Joe’s third-grade class. The club was pretty new, but they’d already done some cool activities—like growing bacteria in petri dishes and seeing who could turn bananas brown and yucky the fastest.

Joe took a sip of his lemonade. “Hey, Frank? What are the dinosaurs that eat everything? Om . . . Omni . . .”

“Omnivores. They eat plants and meat,” Frank said.

“Yeah, that’s me. I’m an omnivore! I’m going to hunt down hot dogs and french fries!” Joe reached for Frank’s plate. “ Roar!”

“Hey, those are my fries!” Frank protested.

Just then Aunt Gertrude strolled into the kitchen holding a basket of clean, folded laundry. “You dinosaurs need to goof around less and eat more,” she scolded. “Your mother needs your help in the yard, remember?”

Joe and Frank groaned. They had almost forgotten about spring cleanup. Leave it to Aunt Gertrude to remind them of something not fun.

Still, Aunt Gertrude wasn’t always the Queen of Chores. And she had been a big help to Mr. and Mrs. Hardy since moving in with them. She lived in a big room over the garage that Mr. Hardy had fixed up.

“Afterward can we go over to Chet’s house?” Frank pleaded. “He invited us to come over and check out his new Dinosaur Rampage video game.”

“Yes. Did you make up your beds?” Aunt Gertrude asked.

“Uh . . .” Joe and Frank exchanged a glance.

“Yard work, then make your beds, and then you may go,” Aunt Gertrude said.

The brothers nodded and quickly scarfed down the rest of their lunches.

When they had finished, they put their plates and cups in the dishwasher and headed outside. The early spring air was cool and smelled like wet leaves. In a shady spot near the driveway, the last mound of snow from winter had almost melted away. Squirrels bounded across the lawn.

Laura Hardy was busy raking one of the flower beds. She wiped her brow and smiled at her sons. “You’re just in time. Can you start pulling up weeds and making a pile over there?” She pointed to a spot on the grass.

“Sure, Mom,” Frank said.

“Where’s Dad?” Joe asked.

“He had a meeting with Officer Heller,” Mrs. Hardy replied. Fenton Hardy was a private investigator who often worked with the Bayport Police. He used to be a member of the NYPD, a.k.a. the New York Police Department.

Like their father, Joe and Frank were detectives. They had solved more than a dozen mysteries in Bayport—everything from finding a missing dog to chasing down zombies. They weren’t in the middle of a case at the moment, though. In fact, things had been unusually quiet in Bayport.

A little too quiet.

“You two must be very excited about your field trip tomorrow,” Mrs. Hardy remarked.

“Yeah! Mr. W. said we get to do a dinosaur dig while we’re there,” Joe said eagerly.

“And we get to take home whatever we find,” Frank added.

“Hey, guys!”

Joe and Frank turned. Chet was running down the sidewalk toward the Hardys’ house.

“Hey, Chet! We’re supposed to go to your house, remember?” Frank called out.

Chet stopped in their front yard. “I just heard some bad news, and I couldn’t wait,” he said, panting for breath.

“What news?” Joe demanded.

“It’s about Adam Ackerman,” Chet announced. “He just joined the science club. And he’ll be going on the field trip with us tomorrow!”

Great and super fun adventures !!

Our 5 year old little girl loves dinosaurs and Geronimo Stilton, so this was absolutely perfect for her. She has been reading for several months and the graphic novels are fun for in between. We own several different ones now , and I am always surprised how many great facts are actually covered in the Geronimi books. We are a homeschool family and own lots and lots of books and Geronimo is one of their favorites series ! It's great when reading can be so much fun !
