The book Skyfire was a very good children's book to read. The book is considered to be a good childeren's book because it is an interesting story for little childeren. It let's them explore their imagination. Skyfire is also a very good childeren's book because it uses words that little kids will understand. When I was younger I loved this book, I would read Skyfire over and over again. As a little kid, I always wondered if I could put out a rainbow by throwing water on it....

We lost our copy so I have to buy another one!

We haven't read this book in a while but my 20 month old daughter saw a picture of herself reading it and has been asking about it since. We can't find it anywhere, so we have to buy another copy! It's a lovely book and must have for anyone's library.

"One day bear looked out his window and saw a rainbow. He had never seen a rainbow before." Bear Tried to convince his friend little bird that the sky was on fire but little bird knew it was just a rainbow. So. the two friends went on an adventure to find "a pot of gold, and to put the fire out." This book is an awsome way to teach kids about the myth of the "Pot of gold at the end of the rainbow," and its a good way to have fun with two diffrent voices it's a wonderful story however I feel that the Author who is also the illistrater could have put a little more detail into the pictures but the less detail did not take away from the story.

In the summer of 1998, Jenny Bowen looked out her kitchen window onto her garden, and her life changed forever. Wish You Happy Forever tells the story of China's momentous progress in its treatment of orphaned and abandoned children. When Bowen began Half the Sky in 1998 determined to bring a caring adult into the life of every orphaned child, it seemed impossible that China would allow a foreigner to work inside government orphanages, let alone try to bring meaningful change. Jenny Would Not Take No for an Answer Her Love won out

My family and I have supported Jenny and the Half the Sky Team since their beginnings in the late 90s. This book is a story of love that ending up changing the face of not just the orphanage system in China but the hearts and minds of the Chinese themselves. As a Caucasian father with a Chinese wife and two adopted children from China; a daughter adopted in 1994 (who is now 21) and yes a son adopted in 1995 (who is now 19) we saw first hand the neglect in the Chinese adoption area years before Jenny and Half the Sky started changing hearts and minds. One day in the late 90s in what I believe was Jenny's first mailing to solicit support and funds her story and dreams showed up in our mail. We had been supporting our local Families with Children from China (FCC) group since our first adoption trip to China in 94 but just sending money to help did not seem enough, Jenny's dreams and her love, nurture and stimulation ideas seemed to be what was needed. We jumped on board as we had seen how love, nurture and stimulation had made a difference in the early lives our Children especially our Special Needs Developmentally Delayed son. My Chinese wife said what Jenny was doing was what was needed but the Chinese officials would not like it and she would get a lot of polite "no's". Thankfully as you read Jenny did not seem to understand the meaning of no and the children are the ones who have reaped the success of that pathway. Sometimes people are drawn by a higher calling to make a difference in this world in spite of stereotype and opposition but as this story shows Love tends to win out if the love is based from the heart and is unconditional. You will find over and over in Jenny's story different and diverse Chinese officials and just normal people asking her what she wanted from them if they agreed to her demands. She continually just said I am her to give to the Children not take anything. This time and again sort of stumped the Chinese not many people especially westerners acted this way. She was and has always been genuine and authentic in her view and plan and said early on to us her supporters that her goal was to lift up the Chinese themselves to take over and affect changes in how they treated orphans and the handicapped. Half the Sky is well on its way to this goal moving toward more of a training group engaging in educating and empowering the Chinese themselves with western successful techniques of early child education. There are two photos in the book that say it all, one a scene with children strapped to chairs cribs in the background (common scene in the 90s in most orphanages) and one after Half the Sky came thru with children playing with staff in a colorful stimulating room. Maybe for most a simple scene difference but for those who understand and have been there a truly remarkable transformation. Love after all wins out.

I first met Jenny Bowen five years ago and as she was giving me a little history of Half the Sky Foundation, she asked me to, “…imagine a couple of women from Japan turning up in Washington and telling the office of Health and Human Services that the way America was taking care of its orphans was all wrong.” That’s the journey Jenny and her team has been on in China for the last 14 years. When she began her quest, China was doing almost everything wrong for its orphans. Neither an expert in child welfare or institutional care, Jenny researched everything she could about the horribly debilitating effects of neglect. She met experts, some of whom immediately understood her vision and offered their support. When she traveled to China to see what could be done, in a cosmic turn of karma, Jenny met Zhang Zhirong, the woman who would become her guide, mentor, and partner. Together they took the first steps towards improving the lives of all of China’s orphans forever.

Jenny’s highly readable and engaging memoir is one of those rare opportunities to get an insider’s glimpse of what it takes to change the world. (Hint: you won’t do it alone and you have to be willing to give yourself to your cause unconditionally.) This book takes us from the moment of Jenny’s inspiration, through the formation of Half the Sky Foundation, an organization that has touched the lives of over 100,000 children, and up to the present day. An inspiring story of how all of us can make a difference

This is a beautifully written, inspiring story written by a former screenwriter turned social enterpreneur. Jenny's story demonstrates how humility, a desire to learn and a drive to help others can accomplish anything. While she believes she isn't an expert, Jenny is a teacher for all of us on how to listen, connect with people from different cultures, keep your head down (when possible), and accomplish the impossible.

Arden Shakespeare Hamlet

I am currently working on my MFA/Directing. I directed Hamlet and am now writing my defense of it. I have two thoughts on this third edition.

After going through this edition, from a point of view of the script, I'm not sure I understand the need to update Harold Jenkins's 2d edition. The script itself was easier to navigate in the 2d edition and I thought Jenkins's notes were more helpful. I also disagree with some of what Thompson and Taylor have to say in their editorial notes below the script. That said, I am biased because I used the 2d edition as a sort of "Hamlet Bible" as I directed the piece. Jenkins's notes were extremely insightful and useful. I became very comfortable with it.

On the other hand, this third edition has some different insight into the play in performance than does the second edition, as well as information on casting and music that was not included in Jenkins. Obviously there is much written about William Shakespeare in the world, and this 3rd edition of Arden is probably the most up-to-date resource for bibliographic material (as well as some photos of past productions of the play). Jenkins edition is 24 years old, ancient in the scholastic world's "what's new" when it comes to sifting the vast quantity of material written on Shakespeare and Hamlet.

Obviously, the needs of the theatrical world for playing Hamlet are different than that of the scholastic world (of which I am currently stuck in both). I think Jenkins is more user-friendly for the theatrician while Thompson & Taylor suit the needs of the scholastic better. My final thought is that a scholar/student of Shakespeare will want to have both the second and third editions for the differences they have to offer.

Middle aged and finally able to read Shakespeare

I cannot more highly recommend this particular book, No Fear Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I am approaching 50 years old and my only real experience trying to read Shakespeare was in high school where we were assigned roles in class and made to read, without comprehension, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar. In the interim, I tried watching a few plays and dragged my kids to see the play Taming of the Shrew, which they hated because they couldn't understand the language nor the plot. Rather than becoming a Shakespeare hater, I've always felt inadequate and dumb for this huge hole in my education.

My current inspiration to try Shakespeare again was my desire to try and help my high school aged son become more educated and cultured than I have been.

I tried first with the Folger annotated editions of Shakespeare. They look excellent and define the unfamiliar words, but I still could not make sense of a substantial portion of the dialogue. I guess maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know.

Anyway, I saw good reviews about this No Fear series, and I ordered several. So far I have read the modern English translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. While I feel a bit like I'm 'cheating', I actually have really enjoyed all the plays and at least now I know the plots and the characters and even some of the more subtle themes. I can't answer the complaints that the translations don't adequately translate Shakespeare's meanings. There are a few side notes that point out double meanings and things like that, though there are not extensive footnotes or sidenotes.

To answer those who rate these books one or two stars, my answer is that they are at least a door into the world of Shakespeare for those of us unable to navigate the originals on our own. And they only take a couple of hours to read. It's not like this is a lifetime commitment or anything. The book only costs five bucks, so why not invest a couple of hours and read it? And, for me, I liked the plays so much that I AM now going to dig out the Folger editions and read the originals, with the No Fear books available in case I get in trouble. These modalities of trying to appreciate Shakespeare are not mutually exclusive.

Well, hopefully that's helpful to someone. I wanted to write this so that people would know that these books are not just for lazy students hoping to avoid reading the originals or somehow 'cheat' in their English classes. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar or teacher and never will be, just an ordinary guy, but for me, these books were the window of opportunity that I had been searching for. Two thumbs up, most definitely.

Best Shakespeare Edition Available: Arden

The Arden editions of Shakespeare are the best available. While they cost a lot more than the standard cheap editions, they have so much more. The Folger editions (probably the most widely available editions of Shakespeare) have footnotes that are quite general and never do they have enough. In addition, they really don't have that much extra information on the play--only a small essay analyzing the modern issues of the play. The Arden editions are truly the scholarly editions of Shakespeare. Ninety percent of the time that I have a question on the text, a footnote provides more information. In addition, a lengthy introduction is included. Everything is documented. While at this point I don't care that much about how the quarto version of Hamlet said "no", when the folio version said "so", it's nice to know that if I have a specific question, the answers in there. My thoughts on Hamlet: Don't fret about understanding the material, just dive in. Shakespeare offers interesting plots to the beginners and vivid prose to pick over to the advanced scholar.

Others argue that British polymath Henry Fox Talbot’s 1835 calotype should be listed as the first preservation of a camera image. Two Men Who Changed The World

The nineteenth century was the heyday of the Industrial Revolution and a time of rapid change, with new inventions seemingly being announced every day. One of the most far reaching inventions was the development of photography. Until now photography's beginnings were obscure and difficult to determine, but Roger Watson and Helen Rappaport's excellent new account tells the story clearly.

People had dreamed of being able to obtain clear, accurate photographic images for years, but the process seemed hopelessly complicated and doomed to failure, despite numerous attempts. Then in the early nineteenth century two very different men, without knowing anything about the other's existence, began to make progress. In France Louis Daguerre, from an humble background and with limited education, began to experiment as part of his employment as an illustrator and creator of large displays called panoramas. In England Henry Fox Talbot, scion of a noble family, began to investigate the possibilities of creating permanent images at about the same time. Watson and Rappaport do a fine job of creating a dual biography of the two men, describing the laborious experiments, repeated time and again with different, sometimes hazardous, materials over many years before each began to produce shadowy images. Inventors are often perceived as hidden away from the world with few human contacts, but both Daguerre and Talbot had many friends and associates and very supportive families. Indeed, Talbot likely would not have succeeded without the encouragement of his strong minded mother.

While Daguerre's process became highly popular and widely used, Talbot's process, which had some advantages over his French rivals, was never as well known. Within a few years of the first photographs other inventors and entrepreneurs had enhanced the process, and the support of prominent people like Prince Albert and the widespread use of photographs in the Crimean War and the US Civil War made photography universally accepted. Daguerre was widely remembered as the photographic pioneer, while Talbot was all but forgotten.

I thoroughly enjoyed this well written account. It was fascinating to read about the many changes brought about by photography and the ways in which photographs were used: to memorialize the dead or to help track down criminals, for example. I was also interested to learn that many women were active photographers. Appropriately, the book ends with an epilogue describing the massive changes in photography due to the advent of digital cameras. This is a story of technological change and of the human genius and ingenuity that made that change possible.

A detailed and interesting account of the three inventors of Photography- Niepce , Daguerre and Talbot.

This is an excellent book that takes you through the rather convoluted partnership of Niepce and Daguerre in their quest to create the world's first practical photographic method- the Daguerreoptype. Henry Talbot is also given his due as inventing the Calotype paper negative process which is shown to lead to Frederick Scott Archer's wet plate negative process.
The book is written to an eye toward the social and political history of the day and takes what would be a dry subject for most- especially if merely presenting the technical steps taken in these mens' quest into a portrait of the men, their families and their unique personalities and genius.

Flat Stanley is actually a funny person when he's flying. Also he went in a spaceship once in a different book.

A great book that young kids will love!

Meet Flat Stanley, boy adventurer, who, due to an unfortunate incident with a falling bulletin board, had been reduced to only two dimensions. But being 1/2″ thick can have it’s advantages, too!

In the 10th book of the Worldwide Adventures series, Flat Stanley and his friends explore the state of Texas, and have more than a few adventures along the way. . .

This is a very cute book that teaches kids not only geographical and historical facts, but also grammar and the importance of friendships and helping each other. What better way to teach kids than with a funny character like Flat Stanley, who gets into the most ridiculous predicaments due to his unfortunate circumstances.

I chose to give this book only 3.5 stars, however, because I felt there were more than a few places where the author got a little off-track from the story line, where parts of the book just don’t seem to “fit” or seem a little disjointed. I feel like better editing would have solved this problem, or perhaps adding in a few more pages with smoother transitions. Over all, however, this is a great book that young kids would love!

remember the alamo stanley

The 10th Flat Stanley World Wide Adventures book "Showdown at the Alamo" by Jeff Brown follows Stanley on vacation to Texas with his brother Arthur to see his friends, Carlos and Eduardo. The book not only follows him on adventures in Texas and teaches the reader about Texas, but also shares Stanley's feelings about becoming famous and all that goes with it. This book is written by a different author that the creator of Flat Stanley. The writing is in a simpler form aimed at readers between the ages of 6-10. I read this with by 9 year old and it was at about her reading level as well as her understanding. She liked the book fine. She had done the Flat Stanley thing where you mail him to someone during the school year. So she was already familiar with him. She gave it 3 stars.
