Shoe Dog, by Megan McDonald

Shoe Dog loves to chew…well, shoes! But when his choice of chewables leads to trouble, a feline friend has a purr-fect solution.

Shoe Dog likes to chew. And chew and chew. But he doesn’t chew a boring old bone. Not a squeaky old toy. Not a smelly old sock. Nope. Shoe Dogs chews…well, take a guess!

Chewing shoes poses a problem, however, and Shoe Dog needs help to solve it. Good thing there’s...Shoe Cat!

With illustrations so lively that Shoe Dog nearly scurries off the page, this is an irresistibly adorable read-aloud ideal for pet owners and animal lovers alike.

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—A shoe-loving pup that lives in an animal shelter and dreams of having a real home with things to chew is adopted by a shoe-loving older woman. As the newcomer chews up his first pairs of boots, sneakers, and flip-flops, his person calls out, "Shoe Dog…You're so cute, but…." When he is well behaved, his world is full of nose kisses, ear scratches, and head pats. But when he transgresses, there are no "Cozy Covers," "Big Bed," or "Land of Upstairs" for him; instead, he is sent to the lightless basement-"the Land of Sad Puppies." Rich language carries readers through this superbly paced story of successful puppy training (with the aid of a new member of the household, Shoe Cat). Movement is key in the page layout and the kid-friendly illustrations in crayon and charcoal are digitally collaged.—Sara Lissa Paulson, The American Sign Language and English Lower School, New York City

From Booklist
Dog is excited when the lady chooses him from an animal shelter. At last he can graduate to “a place full of hundreds of nose kisses, dozens of tummy rubs.” But a problem asserts itself: Dog likes to chew shoes—in fact, “five high heels, four flip-flops, three sneakers, two boots, one wing tip” in a single day. The lady buys more; they get eaten. More; eaten. The otherwise lovable mutt—now dubbed “Shoe Dog”—simply cannot restrain himself, regardless of his degraded living conditions (now he’s in the basement “with only a mop for a friend”). The lady solves the problem by bringing home slippers that look like cats. Shoe Dog, meet Shoe Cat! McDonald’s lively word choices inject plenty of life into the repetitive storyline, and Tillotson’s crayon, charcoal, and digital illustrations give it a goofy spark, depicting Shoe Dog as a zig-zag pattern that looks drawn from a single, thick line. This cool canine creation cavorts through an Escher-like home abstracted into furniture floating amid white space. Simple to relate to and easy to love. Preschool-Grade 1. --Daniel Kraus

Review
Shoe Dog has a big problem: his new owner (referred to as “She, Herself”) is a shoe lover, and he’s an incorrigible shoe eater. He’s barely settled in from the animal shelter, when “Shoe Dog chewed through five high heels, four flip-flops, three sneakers, two boots, one wing tip,” reports Judy Moody author McDonald, who last collaborated with Tillotson on It’s School Picture Day! Neither his owner’s repeated cries of “BAD DOG!” nor the thought of being sent back to “the Land of Sad Puppies and Scratched-Up Cats and One-Eared Bunnies” can discourage Shoe Dog’s gleefully relentless footwear search-and-destroy missions. But what if Shoe Dog discovered a shoe of his own—one that brought out his best, kindest instincts? Tillotson’s canine hero is a marvelous creation, conjured up out of swiftly crayoned, coiled black lines and filled in with charcoal smudges; he looks like a tangled Slinky that’s sprouted bright eyes and pink triangle ears. Anyone who’s ever loved a goodhearted but ill-behaved dog will want to eagerly adopt this book. Ages 4–8. (Mar.) (Publishers Weekly)

An irrepressible dog can’t resist falling into the same type of mischief over and over again, until something surprising changes his pattern.

This small, wiggly pup bounces upward as a silhouetted woman enters the animal shelter. He longs for a home “warm as soup / and cozy as pie,” full of nose kisses and tummy rubs. And oh, how exciting—the woman takes him home! “That very day, / Shoe Dog chewed through / five high heels, / four flip-flops, / three sneakers, / two boots, / one wing tip.” Scolding—“ ‘BAD DOG!’ / She, Herself said”—and punishment—no petting or access to the Big Bed—see him lying forlornly in a gray-blue space, subdued. But each time new shoes arrive, he tracks down and rips into the fresh box, chomping every shoe with gusto. Consequences ratchet up mildly, but Shoe Dog never learns impulse control as such; instead, unexpectedly, he meets a shoe he’d never, ever chew. Finally he’s welcome “on the Big Bed / in the Land of Upstairs,” curling up blissfully with his new shoe-love. Tillotson uses thick black lines for Shoe Dog’s scribbly, coiled-spring body, smudging charcoal inside his shape to give him substance; scraps of pink and beige mark his pointy ears and muzzle. Motion lines show how he scampers and bounds. The visual angle varies, and shoe-box tissue paper flies through the air.

Totally ebullient. (Picture book. 3-7) (Kirkus Reviews)

A SHOE-LOVING PUP THAT LIVES IN AN ANIMAL SHELTER AND DREAMS OF HAVING A REAL HOME WITH THINGS TO CHEW IS ADOPTED BY A SHOE-LOVING OLDER WOMAN. AS THE NEWCOMER CHEWS UP HIS FIRST PAIRS OF BOOTS, SNEAKERS, AND FLIP-FLOPS, HIS PERSON CALLS OUT, “SHOE DOG…YOU’RE SO CUTE, BUT….” WHEN HE IS WELL BEHAVED, HIS WORLD IS FULL OF NOSE KISSES, EAR SCRATCHES, AND HEAD PATS. BUT WHEN HE TRANSGRESSES, THERE ARE NO “COZY COVERS,” “BIG BED,” OR “LAND OF UPSTAIRS” FOR HIM; INSTEAD, HE IS SENT TO THE LIGHTLESS BASEMENT–“THE LAND OF SAD PUPPIES.” RICH LANGUAGE CARRIES READERS THROUGH THIS SUPERBLY PACED STORY OF SUCCESSFUL PUPPY TRAINING (WITH THE AID OF A NEW MEMBER OF THE HOUSEHOLD, SHOE CAT). MOVEMENT IS KEY IN THE PAGE LAYOUT AND THE KID-FRIENDLY ILLUSTRATIONS IN CRAYON AND CHARCOAL ARE DIGITALLY COLLAGED. (School Library Journal)

“ ‘Dog wanted a home. A real home. A place full of hundreds of nose kisses, dozens of tummy rubs.’ Adopted by ‘Herself,’ Dog couldn’t be happier, until he is banished to the basement for chewing up shoes. In Tillotson’s charcoal-and-crayon drawings, the scribbly dog’s desires are at odds with the owner’s elegant wardrobe. McDonald – of the Judy Moody books – knows how to tell this story from the puppy’s perspective; young readers may find they share his sensibility, if not (we hope!) his habits. ” (New York Times Book Review )

“Shoe Dog is a great American story about luck, grit, know-how, and the magic alchemy of a handful of eccentric characters who came together to build Nike. That it happened at all is a miracle, because as I learned from this book, though we are a nation that extols free enterprise, we also excel at thwarting it. This is Phil Knight, one on one, no holds barred. The lessons he imparts about entrepreneurship and the obstacles one faces in trying to create something, are priceless. The pages I folded down are too many to mention.”—Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting for Stone

"I’ve known Phil Knight since I was a kid, but I didn’t really know him until I opened this beautiful, startling, intimate book. And the same goes for Nike. I’ve worn the gear, with pride, but I didn’t realize the remarkable saga of innovation and survival and triumph that stood behind every swoosh. Candid, funny, suspenseful, literary—this is a memoir for people who love sport, but above all it’s a memoir for people who love memoirs."—Andre Agassi, New York Times bestselling author of Open

"Shoe Dog is an extraordinary hero's journey, an epic tale of faith, unparalleled determination, excellence, failure, triumph, hard-earned wisdom, and love. It's nothing short of a miracle that Nike exists. I finished the last sentence in complete awe, inspired and grateful for the experience."--Lisa Genova, New York Times bestselling author of Still Alice and Inside the O'Briens

"A touching, highly entertaining adventure odyssey, with much to teach about innovation and creativity. Phil Knight takes us back to the Big Bang of the swoosh, recalls how he first begged and borrowed from reluctant banks, how he assembled a crew of eccentric but brilliant misfits, how they all worked together to build something unique and paradigm-changing. An inspiration for everyone with an unconventional dream."—Michael Spence, Nobel-prize winning economist

"A fresh historical prospective on one of the most profiled companies in the world...[Shoe Dog] builds characters of the people behind the brand, many of whom we've never heard of."--ESPN.com

"Loaded with hard-earned wisdom...Want a simple recommendation? Go get a copy."--Portland Business Journal Review

"Shoe Dog is, at its heart, an origin story, of both a global brand and a footwear lifer...it reads like pure adventure story, boys facing steeper and steeper challenges and finding ways through, often by the skin of their teeth. As Knight collects the misfits and oddballs who become the core of his growing company, Shoe Dog is more like The Lord of the Rings than a typical mogul memoir."--Complex

“A rare and revealing look at the notoriously media-shy man behind the swoosh.”--Booklist STARRED review

Unusual art and cool story make Shoe Dog a fun read.
By Bob Walch
You'll discover that this book is lots of fun to read out loud. That fact along with an unusual artistic rendering of the central character (see book cover) make SHOE DOG a memorable bedtime story. If the child is too young he or she may not totally understand the way the artist presents the puppy so I'd suggest you try this picture book with a slightly older child...say one four or five.

Another approach is to have your child look at the cover of the book on line and ask if he/she knows what that is. If the answer is "a puppy" then ask, "Do you want to read about that little puppy?" At that point you'll know if this would be a good purchase. I think it is but let your child provide a little guidance.

My daughter and her family just got a puppy so Shoe Dog seemed like an obvious choice. The kids enjoyed it, although toys seem to be their main concern, not shoes : )

Gr 3-5–Inaccurate illustrations and oversimplified text make this a poor choice for either assignments or leisure reading. Attempting to cover all Native American history from the first inhabitants onward results in unfortunate generalizations, and in many places the author characterizes all Native Americans as a group rather than providing information about specific people or nations. While the tone is sympathetic, Kavin occasionally uses dated stereotypes. Similarly, the interior images include black-and-white cartoons that border on caricature, as in the illustration of long-haired, feather-headdress-wearing, mostly shirtless men sitting outside teepees. Clothing and hairstyles in the sketchy drawings appear to conflate dissimilar cultures and time periods, and most lack explanatory captions. The 15 projects range from silly (watching ice cream melt in order to understand the ice age) to highly unlikely, at least for most urban children (making a life-size travois with poles twice as long as a child is tall). Yvonne Wakim Dennis's A Kid's Guide to Native American History (Chicago Review Press, 2009) covers similar ground in a more thoughtful manner.–Sarah Stone, San Francisco Public Libraryα(c) Copyright 2013. a lot of material
By Lightseeker1
I started to read through the entire book but had to go back and 'digest each little piece, bit by bit, in order to fully learn and take in each part. This book is so chocked full of enriching exercises that build upon each other, that you must practice and learn each piece before moving to the next to fully assimilate what you have read. The 'color meditation' is so simple yet effective that I faithfully practice it morning and night. After a short period of time doing the color meditation, my once-high blood pressure has returned to normal levels without medication! The 'unan pattern' is a simple yet highly effective way to ramp up the techniques learned in the first Quantum Touch book. I highly recommend this book to everyone that has been practicing basic QT.

Awesome!
By Dawn C. Moreno
I've attended this workshop in person a few years ago, led by Alain Herriott, and it was just amazing. I learned so much. This book helps to jog my memory about the different Quantum Touch techniques. Quantum Touch is about using your breath to send your love/energy to another person/animal for healing. It works! Anything coming from Alain Herriott is going to be awesome. He's the most gentle, compassionate, wise soul I've ever known. Yes, I guess I'm quite a fan! Pick up this book, it's worth it. I suggest reading the first book Quantum-Touch by Richard Gordon (another loving precious soul) first. Then, reading this book.

Exciting New Methods
By Unique Interests
I read the basic book (Quantum-Touch: The Power to Heal by Richard Gordon) and attended a basic Quantum Touch class, in addition to some training in another method. I'd also read energy medicine books, on other modalities, and was ready for the next step. So I ordered this book.

As I work my way though this book, I've found it to be of great assistance. I had started exploring energy medicine as a way to assist my pets with several health issues. To date, I have had phenomenal (documented) success. However, doing treatments, on multiple pets, on a daily basis is very time consuming. This book outlines methods that provide energy medicine assistance in a longer-lasting format.

I highly recommend it for any student or practitioner of energy medicine.

The Young Desire It: Text Classics, by Kenneth Mackenzie

A masterful and vivid portrayal of a young boy's awakening to true love in the sensual landscape of Western Australia. Winner of the Australian Literature Society Gold Medal, 1937.

Fifteen-year-old Charles Fox is sent away to boarding school, innocent, alone and afraid. There one of his masters develops an intense attachment to him. But when Charles meets Margaret, a girl staying at a nearby farm for the holidays, he is besotted, and a passionate, unforgettable romance begins.

Published in London in 1937 to wide acclaim, The Young Desire It is a stunning debut novel about coming of age: an intimate and lyrical account of first love, and a rich evocation of rural Western Australia. This edition includes a new introduction by David Malouf.

Kenneth Mackenzie was born in 1913 in South Perth. His parents divorced in 1919, and thereafter he lived with his mother and maternal grandfather. Unhappy years boarding at Guildford Grammar School were the basis for his highly acclaimed first novel, The Young Desire It, which was published in London in 1937. Mackenzie's subsequent novels were The Chosen (1938), Dead Men Rising (1951), based partly on his experience of the Cowra breakout and The Refuge (1954); he also produced two volumes of poetry. He received a number of grants and awards, including the Australian Literature Society Gold Medal.

'The Young Desire It is a revelation: a coming-of-age novel from 1937 that deserves a place alongside the classics in this genre. It's a feverish, fascinating, and surprising look into the mind of an adolescent discovering a sense of self in his quest for love. It's also a remarkably nuanced and moving portrait of the struggles of those around him to come to terms with their own lives and longings.' Will Schwalbe, author of The End of Your Life Book Club

'A hymn to youth, to life, to sexual freedom and moral independence.' David Malouf

'A beautifully written story of a sensitive boy's movement towards adult love.' Sydney Morning Herald

'The Young Desire It is an extraordinary novel, dazzling in its texture, wholly original in its vision, and heartbreaking in the power and freshness of the story it tells.' Peter Craven, Australian Book Review

'The Young Desire It is one of the most brilliant, confident and unusual instances of a Bildungsroman in Australian literature.' Peter Pierce, Sydney Review of Books

'The Young Desire It reminds us there is more than a single line of descent in Australian literature...Mackenzie, who died, penniless and forgotten in his 50s, turns out to be a missing link in our literary tradition. The family tree burgeons at his return.' Weekend Australian

'Mackenzie's prose is at its most sparkling and most sensuous in this novel, and he evokes the hot Western Australian landscape with rare force...[The Young Desire It] is a pastoral charged with the awakening of desire, like spring.' Douglas Stewart

'Sensitive, vital and erotic.' Veronica Brady, Australian Dictionary of Biography

'The Young Desire It presents the adolescent boy's view with power and poignancy.' The Times

‘The revelation of the year was the republication of Kenneth Mackenzie's 1937 novel, THE YOUNG DESIRE IT, an erotic Australian coming-of-age story masterfully told, with compelling lyricism in an idiosyncratic voice. How could it have faded from literary view in the intervening years?’ Miriam Cosic in ABR’s Best Books of the Year

About the Author
Kenneth Mackenzie was born in 1913 in South Perth. His parents divorced in 1919, and
thereafter he lived with his mother and maternal grandfather. A sensitive child, he developed a
love of nature and dislike of noise during time spent at Pinjarra, in rural Western Australia.

Unhappy years boarding at Guildford Grammar School were the basis for his highly acclaimed
first novel, The Young Desire It, which was published in London in 1937. By that time Mackenzie had studied law, worked as a journalist and moved from Perth to Sydney, where he was employed as a reviewer, met the leading lights of the literary scene and married.

Mackenzie's subsequent novels were The Chosen (1938), Dead Men Rising (1951), based partly on his experience of the Cowra breakout — he was deemed unfit for active service in the war — and The Refuge (1954); he also produced two volumes of poetry. He received a number of grants and awards, including the Australian Literary Society Gold Medal.

His last years were spent alone, in declining health and succumbing to drink, at Kurrajong, near
the Blue Mountains. In 1955 he died accidentally while bathing in a creek.

a timeless Australian classic.
By Cloggie Downunder
The Young Desire It is the first novel by Australian author, Kenneth Mackenzie, and this volume has been published under the Text Classics banner. The 11-page introduction by David Malouf is both very insightful and quite informative about the author. At fifteen, Charles Fox, serious, intense, sensitive and introspective, is sent to boarding school in the city where he meets, for the first time, other boys of his own age, is taught by young English Masters and lives an unfamiliar, regimented existence. During a longed-for break back home, he encounters Margaret, spending her school break on a neighbouring farm, and falls passionately in love. On the surface, it may seem that not much happens in this novel, but a great deal occurs within, as Charles matures and realises "a mind continually awakening to its own innocence." The narration lies mostly with Charles, but also jumps between a fellow student, Mawley, the young Master who befriends Charles, Penworth, Charles's mother, and Mr Jolly, and this can sometimes lead to confusion until the context or content clarifies the matter. While this novel touches on paedophilia, masturbation and sex between minors, as befits a novel written in the 1930's, these aspects are merely hinted at, so some reading between the lines is required, and here Malouf's introduction is helpful also. This novel's great strength is the wonderful prose. Mackenzie captures the West Australian summer with consummate ease: "The whole earth and all nature sank into a still swoon beneath the eternal ravishment of the sun, and the ceaseless, passionate susurrus of the insects gave sound to the heat, as already mirage was giving it a shaking visibility, clear and refractory like water." and his prose has universal appeal. His descriptions are sometimes verbose, sometimes beautifully succinct: "They smiled with the sincerity of cats." His descriptions of characters, too, are marvellous: "It was a humorous and kindly face, mobile from much talking and an inexhaustible ability to express surprise; the lines around the sly keenness of the eyes showed how often laughter closed them." This edition has gorgeous cover art by W.H. Chong. Text do well to include this beautiful novel under their Classics banner: it was the Winner of the 1937Australian Literature Society Gold Medal and is indeed a timeless Australian classic.

The rich mother of a sheltered, Australian teen, ...
By Skylark
The rich mother of a sheltered, Australian teen, abruptly decides to end his home-tutoring and plunges the boy into an in-country English-style boarding school. His hazing is harsh but a lonely British teacher, noticing the boy's vulnerability, "lends a hand" while fighting his own homeric proclivities. When a girl enters the boy's life, there is fight for his soul. The author based the novel on his own experiences and expresses his teen angst well, but the long passages of description show its dated form.

A treasure from from the 1930's.
By Peter Howard
This is a novel written by an author in the 1903's who is almost forgotten these days. It was recommended for republishing in the 'Text Classics' . It is a beautifully written novel about the coming of age of a young lad in rural Australia. It is unusual that it is set in a country setting. It describes the boys experiences at his home on a remote property and at a fashionable private school. The usual teenage angst and bewilderment and exploration of relationships at school and his first romantic experience have been very sensitively dealt with. It is well worth the read.

la promesa de un beso
By MONICA

Great Reading for my 1st Grader!
By hsgragg
My son has built a lot of confidence reading Nate the Great books. He knows all the characters and their traits after reading about 12 from the series. We bought this particular one for his homeschool group book club. He chose this as the book he wanted to review. My only dislike of the series is there are sometimes fragments used which with him learning grammar at the same time confused him a bit. Amazon's quick delivery was also very helpful!

Museum Governance: Mission, Ethics, Policy, by Marie Malaro

In Museum Governance, Marie Malaro addresses a range of issues facing museum administrators and trustees, arguing they can handle their duties intelligently only if they understand two points—why our country sustains a nonprofit sector and what constitutes trusteeship. Armed with this knowledge, trustees can sort out knotty problems relating to corporate sponsorship, entrepreneurial activities, and fundraising in ways that preserve the integrity of the nonprofit.

Malaro first explores the principles of nonprofit governance. She explains the purpose and use of professional codes of ethics and offers practical advice about board education and its role in fostering the long-term health of an organization. She then applies these principles to situations frequently confronting trustees, discussing how to set collection strategies, balance mission and entreprenurial ventures, handle deaccessioning, maintain effective board oversight, approach automation, and deal with repatriation requests.

Review
“Museum Governance is an important . . . discussion of the major issues facing America’s museums . . . . Malaro’s points and recommendations provide a sound foundation on which to advance the discussion and debate about the mission, ethics, and policies of the country’s museums, their governing authorities, and the professionals who manage them.”—Curator

“A very pure distillation of critical ideas concerning museum missions, the obligations of trustees (prudence, loyalty, and obedience to the law), and the need to provide a firm foundation of policy under a diverse range of museum activities.”—Stephen E. Weil, scholar emeritus, Smithsonian Institution's Center for Education and Museum Studies

“Malaro raises important issues that face museums today. She consistently reminds trustees and other museum professionals to consider museums' educational missions and to remember that public faith is crucial to the sector. . . . Her book should be required reading for everyone involved with museums.”—Southern Historian
