"FINALLY"???????

I pre-ordered GLORIOUS WAR many moons ago and was truly and anxiously looking forward to it. I couldn't wait to read it! Unfortunately, after having now done so, I must say how severely disappointed I am. Perhaps the lead-off in the Advance Praise on the back cover should have been a red flag to me. Yes, Larry McMurtry (author of arguably the worst book ever written about Custer, his risible, should-never-have-been-published CUSTER) leads the blurb charge. Then there is a paragraph by a New York Times bestselling author who writes "Finally,...we are treated to a wide-angle portrait of Custer the Civil War hero." "Finally"? It seems many writers' memories are often short, perhaps conveniently so when pushing hot off-the-press books by their brethren. "Finally"???

First published in 1983 and still in print is CUSTER VICTORIOUS by Gregory Urwin. If you want to learn about the Civil War Custer I cannot recommend this earlier book enough. GLORIOUS WAR - instead of being an educated extension of that earlier volume - is simply a diluted distillation, a pale imitation of Urwin's grand and epic work.

Apart from Urwin's book being fantastically illustrated with myriad photos, maps, period drawings of battles - compared to the current work's trifling photo insert - the book itself is rich in detail and scope. Two examples of what I am talking about should suffice. In the new book we are told of Private Huff's being the man who fired the fatal shot that brought down the "Invincible" Jeb Stuart. By contrast, in Urwin's much more in-depth treatment, we learn that things aren't as cut and dry as to who actually brought down Old Beauty. Three possibilities are discussed. Another example of a sparsity of detail in Thom Hatch's approach: on page 257 we learn that the Rebels had mined a road that the Union needed to use. It reads: "The Rebels had mined the road, and Sheridan ordered twenty-five prisoners to crawl on hands and knees in front of the column to alleviate the threat." In reading that one might think the prisoners were being used by Sheridan to trip their own booby-traps. Talk about Total War! I had to refer back to Urwin's text to learn more of this seemingly horrendous use of prisoners-of-war. Firstly, I discovered that they were "trip-wire torpedoes" and then that "Sheridan put twenty-five of his prisoners on hands and knees in front of the van and forced them to crawl over his projected line of march and remove the rest of the bombs." Very informative! And quite a different picture!

There are other troubles. On page 221, in wondering on Custer's "dark moments", Thom Hatch tells us that "No clinical explanation has ever been given for the dark moments in Custer's life." Au contraire, Charles Hofling wrote a "Psychobiographical Inquiry" entitled CUSTER AND THE LITTLE BIG HORN in 1981 and it makes for very interesting reading. It goes into those "dark moments" in detail. Also, for some reason, Hatch is hell-bent on calling Front Royal...Fort Royal. Once might be a typo. Many times is...simple ignorance. Front Royal, Virginia was where six of Mosby's Rangers were supposedly executed by order of Custer. In all probability Custer didn't order the executions - but the story deserved much more detail than the blink-and-miss it approach found in this book.

Actually, that is a big problem with Hatch's book: it seems writ in a whirlwind hurry. Speed works in a cavalry charge - but not in a written historical work. Stylistically the writing is also quite blase. Names and places are trotted out for our edification with little or no enthusiasm or color or panache. Much of the book reads like matter-of-fact, extended wikipedia entries. Another thing: how many times did this author need to write out the entire "Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer" or "George Armstrong Custer" as the beginning to an overwhelming number of paragraphs? If - as has been said of Dickens - our author were being paid by the word this repetitiveness might be understandable, if not entirely excusable. But as it is now, the overuse becomes rapidly tedious and tiresome.

Anyway, "Finally" happened back in 1983 with the publication of Gregory Urwin's in depth and richly illustrated CUSTER VICTORIOUS, subtitled THE CIVIL WAR BATTLES OF GENERAL GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER. Thankfully, it is still in print for those seeking a much fuller accounting of the Boy General's true glory days!

Glorious War

One has only to watch Bill Hader's performance as General George Armstrong Custer to understand the stereotypic legacy that dogs the memory of this career army officer and cavalry commander, but is that legacy deserved? Author Thom Hatch doesn't think so and makes a compelling argument the that affect in his latest release, Glorious War.

Though listed in the nation's history books for his disastrous defeat at Little Big Horn, his career with the Union Army was marked almost exclusively by victory. Graduating West Point in June 1861 his first assignment found him on the field at the first battle of Bull Run (or first Manassas). Time and again he proved himself a capable if unconventional commander who kept his head under pressure and held the admiration and trust of his men. By the time he collected the first flag of truce from the Confederates at Appomattox, the exploits that had propelled him up the ranks had also earned him a fair amount of celebrity.

Hatch's carefully researched civil war biography chronicles Custer's early life and military career, shedding light on the man Custer was both on and off the battlefield. What is surprising though is how objective the author is despite his rather obvious agenda. Rather than ignore his failings (real or imagined) Hatch answers each accusation fairly, allowing his readers to come to their own conclusions about his subject.

All told, a well-written and thought-provoking mini biography of a controversial American legend.

One of the best biographies on Custer

I read a lot of biographies and to me they are really hit or miss. While the subject is important in getting me interested in a biography it is really the tone the author uses that makes or breaks it for me. In Glorious War Thom Hatch uses a flowing narrative style that does an excellent job of combining the need to relay information about the subject’s life while still making it an enjoyable read. For me this is one of the most enjoyable biographies I have read and joins a small group of similar books that I would consider reading again. That is even higher praise considering I only had a passing interest in the man prior to reading this book.

The battle scenes were especially well described and reading it I could not help but liken it to the work of Shelby Foote, who for me is the most enjoyable author to read on the Civil War era. The battles and Custer’s place in them was high paced and exciting to read. Again not something that is found in most biographies.

The research is well done and, while some things might have been left out, I felt no holes or deficiencies in my understanding of Custer’s life and actions during the war. I had always known he had notable exploits during the war years and that his future placement leading the soldiers at Little Big Horn was in no small part to his legacy from the war.

The book is informative but not very helpful

The book has rich information, covering logistics, accommodation, food, shopping...However it didn't help me much when I was in Brazil.The major problem is that it has almost no photos or pictures for the places it recommends and the recommendations are all listed in Portuguese.
It's hard for me to match the places I have been to the recommendation list in this book. And when I was looking for some attractions, I didn't how the architecture looks like.

Another children's book for parents....

This book is so charming. I absolutely love it and I'm an adult, Oh, sure. I read it with my three-year old. He loves it too, but let's be honest here. We aren't going to read books to our kids that we don't enjoy ourselves. The horrible books get "accidentally" dropped behind the bookcase or carelessly kicked under the bed or simply thrown out in the garbage. Not Monkey and Robot though. The stories are genuinely funny and smart. Highly recommended. We get both M&R books for all of our friends who are new parents. Parenthood doesn't have to be full of tedious and dull books about fairies and crap. Monkey & Robot prove that you can tell a compelling story (or four) with heart and humor.

My 6 year old loved Monkey & Robot when we borrowed it from the library so much that when we couldn't find More of Monkey & Robot at our library I decided to buy it for him. The stories are cute and funny and perfect for my 1st grader to read by himself (or to me).

Brimsby (a proper name for a hatter!) could be any number of animals, really, with his black stubby nose, nubby ears, pea-soup–colored body and bowler hat. A bear? A mole? Inset scenes, arresting compositional choices and conversation bubbles direct eyes across pages of computer-generated artwork. While flat, these illustrations carry powerful poignancy. The badger relays his seafaring dreams to Brimsby as ships, pirates, telescopes and dragons hover over their heads, encapsulated in a row of neat ovals. Twelve small, sequential studies reveal Brimsby’s mounting loneliness with painful clarity. He sits at his work table, by the window, sewing different hats on different days in different seasons, in boxy isolation—a lonely portrait that changes little, repeating again and again across a double-page spread. Readers may sniffle before turning the page to find him trudging across a sweeping snowscape, waist-high in a drift. Brimsby is a hat maker and he lives in a cottage in the country. Every day Brimsby’s friend visits, and while Brimsby works on his splendid hats, his friend makes some delicious tea and they talk about all kinds of fascinating subjects. This special friendship lasts for years and then one morning Brimsby’s friend announces that he is going to leave soon. He wants to become a sea captain.

Brimsby makes his friend a wonderful hat and then he sees him off, wishing him “the best of luck.” Now Brimsby works on his own and his days a quiet. He finally gets to the point when he realizes that his days are too quiet and that he is “awfully lonely.” So, on a cold snowy day Brimsby sets off to make some new friends. He soon comes to a tree that is filled with little birds. The poor little creatures are have a terrible time “shoveling the snow out of their nests and keeping the cold wind from blowing out their fires.” The birds are far too busy to take the time to make friends with Brimsby. Still friendless, Brimsby walks home.

Making new friends is not easy at the best of times and poor Brimsby finds that his quest to find some new friends is going to be rather challenging. Readers will be charmed when they see how Brimsby uses his gift for making hats in a very creative way. Brimsby’s delightful story is accompanied by wonderfully expressive artwork. The illustrations take us into Brimsby’s world to such great effect that we rather wish we could jump into the page and visit. (Through the Looking Glass Reviews )

A joy to read over and over

Our two-year old son loves this book and asks over and over for "Brimsby." It is a fun story to read and just the right length and tone for bedtime. It's especially good on a cold or snowy day.

But perhaps most important, as a parent, it never gets old for the reader. The story is told as much through the artwork as through the words. The illustrations are truly beautiful and very different from what you usually see in a children's book. This is a real work of art and there is an impressive variance of perspective and composition that draws you in and shows you something new every time you read it. The simplicity of the illustrations is deceptive-- at first glance they are very approachable animations, but every time you read it you notice a new detail.

This is now our go-to gift for friends with young kids, and we've ordered a stack of them.

The jacket says this is Prahin's first book-- hope he writes and illustrates a lot more.

One of the founders of the modern Republican Party in Texas, Marjorie Meyer Arsht served as a state party committeewoman and was the first Jewish woman to run as a Republican for the state legislature. Becoming active in politics in the 1950s, she was closely involved in the early career of George H. W. Bush.

A member of the prominent Texas family (Meyer, Cohen) that owned Foley Brothers department store and gave Cohen House to Rice University, she recalls the contentious mid-century division in the Jewish community over the issue of Zionism that split congregations and turned friends into bitter antagonists. Formerly president of the Temple Beth Israel Sisterhood, Arsht served as a national spokesperson for a major American anti-Zionist organization.

When she turned seventy, Arsht was working as a speechwriter and high-level assistant in the Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington while also serving as a regent of Texas Southern University, where she spearheaded a number of important reforms. In addition, she continued to run the small, independent energy development and investment company founded by her late husband.

From her childhood as a member of one of the few Jewish families in small-town Yoakum, Texas, to her years of political activism and social involvement, she offers a moving account of an indomitable spirit, one that will provide both inspiration and an understanding of how the Republican Party came to be the dominant force in Texas politics.

One person making a difference

My mother, Elaine Kuper, and I enjoyed the book from our different perspectives---hers, from her active involvement at Beth Israel having taught Sunday School for 25 years (and my grandmother, Lorraine Hofeller having taught for 40 years!) My family's membership of Temple Beth Israel goes back to 1934--My interest focused on the amazing history of Texas politics! This book truly underscores the fact that one person can make a difference!

Marvelous historical document

"All The Way From Yoakum" is a marvelous book about an extraordinary woman. It is an historical document as well--about Jewish life in small-town Texas, the rise of the Texas Republican Party and the evolution of race relations in the South. By any standard, Marjorie Arsht is an unforgettable person and this book brings her vividly alive.

A Valuable and Interesting History of a Living Legend

Marjorie Meyer Arsht has written one of the most valuable histories of a rare breed of Texan who is considered by a former President to be a true legend in her own time. Born in Yoakum, a small town in Texas with an unusual name, Marjorie, a tiny Jewish girl, set forth on a very uncommon path in life. As you read her fascinating story you will follow her childhood in Yoakum to Rice University where she was accepted as a fourteen year old student. Finishing her studies at Rice, she immediately set forth on grand adventure when she enrolled at the Sorbonne in France. Mrs. Arsht is a talented writer who makes the reader see and enjoy her climb from a rural community to the highest levels in this country. Outspoken, intelligent, funny, and with courage enough to make us all take notice, now in her nineties, she has written a jewel of a story. Read this book. Marjorie Meyer Arsht is a incredible wonder!

Dr. Samuel I. Zeveloff is a professor of zoology at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. He is the author of the book "Mammals of the Intermountain West" (University of Utah Press, 1988) and the senior editor of two other volumes on wilderness issues. He received a Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Wyoming.

Excellent for natural history buff/environmentalist, but...

This book fulfills its promise to provide information for those among us wanting to know as much as possible about the bandit. The only shortcoming is the sparcity of photos and the absence of even a single color print. I blame not the author for his writing is impeccable.
Still, this book is well worth the money!

A delightful yet rigorous book about delightful creatures

This is a very nicely written book, which covers everything from the systematics to the life cycle and habits of raccoons. It answered all of my questions spurred by meeting (and becoming enchanted by) a nearly tame raccoon. It is the quality of book one had come to expect from the now defunct Smithsonian Institution Press.

Crawling into a porthole for safety, she finds herself in a cage with a pair of bonobos who care for her and hide her from Noah and his family. But in the midst of the hopelessness of the deluge, Sebah also delights in the playfulness of her animal friends and the affections of a handsome fellow stowaway, and she resolves to look forward to the future, despite the grief for the life she left behind. Napoli (Skin, 2013) draws from the book of Genesis for a basic outline, but she takes ample liberties with the rest of the story, presenting an obstinate, guilt-ridden Noah and an angry family resentful over their wretched circumstances, all through the eyes of a clever, headstrong young girl who learns to thrive on hope. The rain starts like any other rain with a dark cloud and a few drops, but then the deluge relentlessly continues. By the third day, sixteen-year-old Sebah has lost her brothers and her home to the flooding; by the second week, she is starving and stranded in a tree until a boy from her village finds her, they build a raft, and he claims her, with her consent, as his wife. By the end of the month, however, he too has been swept away and, before meeting the same fate herself, she manages to climb aboard a giant ark. Yes, it is indeed Noah's ark and since she's aware that her status as a stowaway on the ship defies Noah's plan, Sebah decides her best bet is to hide with the animals below. As the rains continue, however, and Sebah's belly grows heavy with a baby, her survival may depend on revealing herself. Napoli mines the Biblical story--one of the original apocalyptic tales--to find a different spiritual subtext, transforming it from a tale not about obeying the will of God but about how the very act of survival is sometimes the greatest leap of faith of all. The book depicts Noah as a man struggling with an enormous burden, and his strict reliance on his faith acts as a direct foil to the non-religious Sebah, whose reasons for living are bound both literally and figuratively to the fertile earth (she's a gardener in addition to being pregnant). There is room, and perhaps requirement, for both types of faith in Napoli's interpretation, and the ultimate survival of Sebah's and Noah's families underscores that message. Fans of Life of Pi will find a similar blend of gritty survivalism and spiritual contemplation in this maelstrom of a tale. KQG--BCCB, March 2014

Puts the reader smack in the middle of a terrifying disaster. Great read.

This is a spell-binding imagining of what life might really have been like on Noah's Ark during the flood. Napoli skillfully blends a teen adventure story with lots of fascinating, well-researched detail that make for a compelling read.

Where We've Always Wanted to Be

We all know the broad Biblical strokes: Noah builds an ark; Noah loads the ark with animals; God floods the earth; earth starts over. Donna Jo Napoli, bless her, adds the details, the humanity, that make STORM a story that could float an ark. We keep the company of two creatures Noah left uncounted, a pair of stowaways who remind us in every page of the human side of this tale we thought we knew. We're where we've always wanted to be, on the ark, in the ark, rolling in the deluge with the clamor and the smells and the terror of a planet's worth of life packed into a boat. The girl Sheba, destined to mother a new world, cowers in a cage of bonomos and wrings fresh water from the organs of caught fish. She loses one lover in the flood, only to find she is not left alone. It seemed so tidy in the broad strokes: dry to wet to dry, everything to nothing and back, bad gone, good on deck. Clean slate. But not so simple in the foul, rolling, clamorous decks of the boat itself. Not so simple in the starving, desperate, endless days and months that compel the girl Sheba to do more than survive, that wring from her the indomitable spirit that, Noah or not, will place her race's foot once more onto the dry land. STORM honors the epic tale with the insights and surprises of a great storyteller.

A great start and a then a horrible downward spiral of rubbish.

The first third of this book was great and really impressed me. I was actually enjoying it, but then it got weird. Portraying Noah's family as a very dis-functional and slightly crazy. A 16 year old pregnant girl sneaks onto the ark and hides for quite some time in the apes cage before giving birth to her child aboard the ark. Then she finds another stowaway on board as well. A very interesting premise went down hill quick and totally ruined what could have been a great story.
