Rudy’s carefully composed scenes feature clever components and unexpected details, including felted figures, repurposed household objects, torn paper and objects from the natural world. The straightforward text begins by speaking directly to the small, pensive-looking mouse who appears on the first page: “Do you wish sometimes… / that you had a pet?” Many of the following spreads (a mix of single- and double-page) have only one or two simple declarative sentences or phrases, giving the text a staccato feel. All are useful suggestions: “Pick a pet that suits your style,” or “Pick a pet you’ll like to exercise.” The illustrations, meanwhile, provide offbeat extensions of the simple text—a fuzzy yellow caterpillar worn like a feather boa or a pair of bees flying on leashes. Most scenes have an old-fashioned feel, featuring antique toys, fancy miniature furniture, bits of lace, old letters and postage stamps—details that will resonate more with adults than young listeners. The few instances of mild humor are also likely to go over children’s heads. An unseen narrator voices the wish of a little mouse to obtain a pet (in mouse world, an insect) of her very own and offers multiple nuggets of useful advice to would-be pet owners along the way (“A pet is not a doll. It might not like to play dress-up”). Although this gently humorous guide works well as a readaloud selec- tion, the succinct, straightforward text will also make it accessible to primary-grade readers unafraid to tackle a few larger vocabulary words. It’s the illustrations that take center stage here, however, with digital photos capturing the three-dimensional handmade cloth mice in action with their creepy-crawly critters against a backdrop of found and created objects that will have miniature enthusiasts drooling with delight. Some scenes are simple, such as the group of mouse children offering “Free Roly-polies” from a cardboard carton, while others are more ornate: amidst sumptuous Victorian-looking surroundings, a rococo mouse drapes a fuzzy yellow caterpillar around her neck like a feather boa. Humorous touches add to the fun: for example, “And when your pet makes a mess, clean up after it” is accompanied by a picture of a mouse holding his nose while picking up his caterpillar’s frass with a baggy-covered paw. Readers will be fascinated by the imaginative tableaux and by the “how did she make that?” aspect. Picture Book Gold

I'm a sucker for miniatures, and Maggie Rudy's beautifully illustrated teeny tinies got me right where I focus. There's a moony, introspective quality to this book, as the young mouse girl yearns for the right pet to complete her young lifestyle, but of course... she's a mouse. On the surface, this book can be read very quickly for its gentle humor over the difficulties of a mouse finding just the right pet, not too big, not too scary, etc. But there is plenty of humor in the details on each page. I laughed out loud on the page about keeping your pet clean: Mouse was washing her turtle, and in the corner of the picture is a can of Turtle Wax.

After you read the book through the first time, you can go back to the beginning and pay attention to the box of roly polies, the critter that the mouse child ends up with, those strange little pill bugs that every child I know fancies as their first backyard discovery. Real magic mining there.

Utterly charming

I cannot say enough nice things about this book. My family & I are utterly charmed. Maggie Rudy and her mice touch on practical matters of pet care and also capture the excitement of owning a pet. There are comical mishaps and a sweet narrative which follows a little mouse child, dressed in yellow, who herself seeks the perfect pet.

I highly recommend this book -- for grandparents, aunts, uncles, parents & children; for pet-lovers & mouse-lovers, too.

ADORABLE BOOK!

"I Wish I Had a Pet" book is absolutely ADORABLE! Children and adults alike will be unable to read this exceptional book without huge smiles on their faces. After reading the book children will give a lot of thought and second thoughts to choosing the right pet for themselves. The mice characters, which author/artist Maggie Rudy handmade for the book, are VERY creative, artistic, expressive and oh so cute! Readers automatically fall in love with them and their background scenery.

I collect children's mouse stories and have many, but this is my favorite for subject matter and creativity. Definitely a 5 star book!

"DELIGHTFUL, FUN-FILLED, AND ENTERTAINING!"

I purchased this book for a special friend, who has a five-year-old daughter, who loves this inspiring children's series as much as my own daughter has for many years, and still does. This enjoyable installment to the popular classical series is easy-to-read for beginners. The sentences are short, and the colorful illustrations are inviting as they compliment the fun-filled story, bringing it to life.

It's a hot day in Bear country, and the Berenstain Bears certainly know how to cool down the neighborhood. It begins with Mama bringing out lemonade to the cubs, who are grateful to quench their thirst with delicious lemonade. Brother, Sister, and Honey Bear decide to make a lemonade stand, after Mailbear offers them twenty-five cents for a cup of lemonade.

Before they know it, Lawn Bears Buy it, then several neighbors, until almost all the lemonade is gone. However, The neighbors chip-in, and a block party begins. Delicious food is cooked, there is plenty of drinks, and Farmer Ben sells fruit, and goodies. Everyone has fun, and Grizzly Bear lights up the dark sky with fireworks, before the party ends.

This wonderful children's book is fun, easy to read, will make young readers giggle, and is enjoyable. It teaches children about teamwork, and responsibility. In addition, they learn the value of money. Educational and highly recommended to teachers, parents, and child-care providers.

A MUST READ SERIES!

What an amazing second book to one of the most original series I'm read in a long time. Do be sure and read the first book in the series, Midnight City, before reading The Severed Tower. I've not been a young adult in many years but I have loved this series. It's complex, imaginative, the characters grab at your emotions. I was freaking out so many times throughout the book and not able to turn the pages fast enough for wanting to discover how the heck they were going save themselves again. Just a note, this book does end on a cliffhanger but it's not really a problem since the series is complete and the last book, Valley of Fires, is available. And I can't wait to get my hands on that last book!

Highly Recommend to anyone over the age of 13, all the way to the age of 113. Don't pass this series up because you think it's for kids.

Great Series!

I am really enjoying this entire series. Yes, it's a young adult novel, but the story moves along at a rapid pace and not always in the direction you expect. Character development is actually pretty good and they are all delightfully flawed individuals for the most part. The pace of the book is really fast and reads in your head like you are watching a blockbuster movie. Very fun, fast paced, and clear.

OUTSTANDING!

There is so much about this story that I love. It’s hard to believe how many plot lines are running through this and never does it feel mired, instead the plot is always amazing!

I always hear people say that a book is action-packed but I don’t think that most can hold up to this type of book. Every page has something tearing out of it ready to be devoured by the imagination. I also find it amazing how many characters J. Barton Mitchell has managed to get into this book but it never feels overwhelming. And what is finally learned about the tower, and about ourselves while reading, is simply genius. Again, never does this information feel cumbersome, nor does it bog the story down. Instead everything lifts the story up and I found that I wanted to read faster to know what was going to happen and yet I wanted to read slower so I didn’t miss a thing!

My favorite characters are back and ready for action from the first in the series. The Max! My favorite puppy of all time. I love the way he is always ready for action and will do anything to save the one he loves.

Zoey is just amazing in this, of course. She is still very young but I could tell she’s learned from her powers. She is the pentacle of everything and watching what this young girl has to go through just makes me love her all the more.

And then there is Holt and Mira, and their love square. It’s interesting because I normally do not enjoy reading about love triangles but this particular case, involving not only three but four people, is amazingly well crafted and beautifully done. Each step towards or away from one another is understandable and it doesn’t take up a lot of the story, it just all makes total sense! It’s also a nice break from all of the chaos that the assembly has created. Although this particular love square has its own chaos.

And my two favorite new characters, Ravan (love the spelling) and Gideon. Gideon is simply amazing. He’s the type of person that everyone should have around. He always knows what to say to make someone feel good about themselves and it’s no wonder The White Helix follows him. Ravan on the other hand is totally sarcastic, strong, intelligent and kind of crazy. Her edginess brings something completely different to the other characters and it seems like she is her own Gideon, making the people around her stronger because of her edge.

Simply said… I could not put this book down. I am so amazed at the craftiness that J. Barton Mitchell has achieved. This story is fabulous and begs to be read over and over again. I know each time I read this I will find something that I didn’t see before.

“Compassion comes in all kinds of flavors,” Ravan said tightly. There was pain in her voice. “But they don’t all taste like pumpkin pie.”

She looked up and saw Holt. He was awake, staring at her with that look he had when he’d decided to do something dangerous and altogether not smart.

“Is… that your girl?” Ravan asked.

“Yeah,” Holt said, smiling. “that’s my girl.”

Even if you do not enjoy sci fi this is a story that I think everyone could read. The feelings it summons are reminiscent of the movie Independence Day. I found myself upset, happy, mad, sad, and joyous all from one plot and fabulous characters! Already the hubby and I have bought both books on Audible and plan to listen to them together. I know he’s going to love this just as much as I do!

About the Author

Average general purpose photography book

I purchased this book based on the many positive reviews, but was underwhelmed by the generalized content and lack of detailed instruction. The book has some beautiful photographs and the text is well-written, but I expected more depth considering the subtitle is "Essential Habits for Stronger Compositions." This book covers everything from light and color theory to camera types, lenses, filters and software – all of which can be found in greater detail in other photography books. Most of the sections fit on one or two pages, which severely limits in-depth discussion of the subject. Many sections seem like filler, and others just barely touch on important photographic elements (e.g., spirals — the author introduces Fibonacci spirals but provides no real application other than to "look for spirals"). As well, there are typos and technical errors like pg 243, where deep depth of field is stated as f/2.8 and shallow depth of field for the same image as f/7.1. While there are some fantastic images in the book, others are curious like pg 82, where the trident is not even in sharp focus. I think more experienced photographers will be disappointed by the generic content and lack of deeper discussion around composition.

A must read series.

It was amazing. The ending really pulled at my heart strings. All the memories of Artie's adventures I really never forget it all. In fact, this series inspired me to start writing stories of my own. To start creating my own adventures, mysteries and memories just as the otherworld chronicles has.
