Throwing Mud at a Classic

Theodore Dreiser was a fine writer and "Sister Carrie" was his masterpiece. This novel was one of the first, if not the first, to deal with the subject of psychological depression, and is a pioneering work of American realism.
That being said, Dreiser deserves better than the inane, babbling, obscene "annotations" which have been inseerted at random into his text.

Tim Federle on the Story Behind the Story: Better Nate Than Ever

Contrary to the very popular opinion of my more prominent childhood bullies: Broadway is not for sissies.

Growing up in Pittsburgh, I was the only kid who’d cut class to read Stephen Sondheim’s unauthorized biography in the library stacks. I was a black sheep, sure, but also a lost one—and I found myself when I found theater. “It gets better” wasn’t part of the lexicon when I was in school, but I somehow knew that it would get better—if only I could get to New York City.

And I got there, arriving a hopelessly hopeful teen, trading college for a shot at the big time. After ten years and five Broadway shows (plus a stint as a Christina Aguilera backup dancer), “it” had definitely gotten better, but it had also gotten . . . familiar. I was in a creative rut.

At age thirty, I landed a job as an associate choreographer on Billy Elliot. The show starred several young boys who alternated in the title role, and they’d grow up quickly from high-pitched Billys to lower-pitched Williams. Thus, the dance team would constantly scour the country, searching for Billy replacements. After a while, these cattle calls would become a blur of shiny showbiz kids.

But then, one day, Billy hopeful #8,420 appeared. The kid who changed my life.

This kid was pudgy, freckled, straight out of a fifties comic strip. When it was time for #8,420 to sing, he stood there with one arm wrenched behind his back. We were accustomed to all kinds of nervous behavior, but this boy was especially quirky. He wasn’t polished or slick. He finished his short song, thanked us, and turned to leave.

That’s when I saw it: the rabbit’s foot.

He was gripping it so tightly, he’d probably rubbed the green dye right into his sweaty palm. And in that strange moment—knowing he’d never be cast in Billy Elliot but that he was the most memorable kid I’d seen in ages—I found my new dream. I wanted to write a story about kids like him, for kids like him.

In the four weeks it took me to write the first draft of Better Nate Than Ever, I became that daydreaming mini-Tim again. I’d wake up at seven every morning, type till my fingers ached the way a dancer’s legs might, then dash to yet another ten-hour rehearsal. I didn’t eat, I didn’t pay bills. It was magic. Rehearsals suddenly crackled with possible plotlines—watching these kids gave me all the inspiration an author could want. And in the process of writing about their dreams, I rewrote my own. Telling stories in a bigger way than I ever could as a dancer.

There was never any doubt that I wanted this book to be for middle schoolers. Because? They’re not jaded. Because they’re still earnest enough to walk into an audition with a rabbit’s foot. And because it’s important to be told, when you need to hear it most, that the thing that might get you picked on in one town might get you paid in another. Imagine!

Deserves many, many standing ovations!

Last year, author Tim Federle exploded onto the middle-grade stage with his debut, Better Nate Than Ever...a book I lovelovelove...well, Federle is back with his debut’s sequel- Five, Six, Seven, Nate- and Federle has once again charmed, entertained, moved, and awed me with his stellar, sparkling storytelling! Broadway musical loving Nate Foster’s wildest dreams are coming true as he heads to NYC to begin rehearsals for E.T.: The Musical! But, Nate soon finds that his wildest dreams may not be exactly how he imagined them to be as he must deal with pushy co-stars, intimidating superiors, his own self-doubt, and the confusing world of first crushes and first kisses.

I’m SO in love with Federle’s pitch-perfect middle-grade voice and this achingly real, endlessly amusing world he has created. Everything I loved about Better Nate Than Ever (the laugh-out-loud humor, poignant honesty, superb characters, etc) is seamlessly carried over into this sequel. In Five, Six, Seven, Nate, we the readers and Nate are plopped into unfamiliar, yet exciting territory: the world of Broadway musical rehearsals. This is a fast-past, whirlwind kind of world and Federle brings his immense first hand experience to the story, creating a wonderfully authentic setting. Like Nate, I was dazzled and mesmerized by this larger than life world, but also intrigued by the many unexpected facets of it. This musical world isn’t all shining lights, shimmering costumes, and lovely voices though, and Federle holds nothing back when exploring the heavily competitive, sometimes deceptive side of this world.

Tim Federle so deftly and awesomely creates and explores this world, that it is impossible to walk away from Nate’s story NOT loving this magical musical world as much as him! But, what I love most about this sequel, and its predecessor, is, that at their core, they are about one special young boy’s coming of age and journey to find out just who he is. The refreshing honesty with which Federle writes, his perfectly delivered sharp wit, and his refusal to shy away from the complex, hard topics (extreme bullying, sexuality, alcoholism, etc), are what make his books stand out among other modern middle-grade books. And, of course, his fantabulous, unforgettable characters help too!

I’m not sure I can fully stress how much I loveadoreamcrazyabout Nate and his BFF, Libby! These characters are so well-written and given such fantastic real layers and just feel so genuine. They no longer feel like book characters, but like long lost friends and kindred spirits. Awkwardly charming, always endearing, and truly unique Nate is such a relatable young character, but also one that is worthy of looking up to. His courage, compassion, and refusal to be untrue to himself are admirable, while his unexpected humorous observations, honest perspective, and contagious excitement at the world, make him amusing and utterly impossible to love. And my girl, Libby?! Oh I love and want to be this spectacular girl! You couldn’t ask for a funnier, stronger, truer friend than this lovely girl. Nate and Libby’s friendship is one of the best written and most genuine and entertaining that I’ve come across in a long time. I really enjoyed the way this friendship organically grew and evolved in Five, Six, Seven, Nate.

There’s so much about the end of this book that gave me the warmest of warm fuzzies and put the biggest smile on my face for hours!

MY FINAL THOUGHTS: I loved Better Nate Than Ever SO much that I was worried the sequel wouldn’t be able to live up to it, but it SO does! With its excellent characters, marvelous storytelling, and big heart, Five, Six, Seven, Nate is simply superb and deserves many standing ovations!

I loved Better Nate Than Ever, and was so excited to read Five, Six, Seven, Nate! This sequel delivers in a big way. By turns hilarious and touching, you follow Nate's journey as he starts rehearsals for his first Broadway show. But the road to success on the stage, like the road to finding yourself, is full of potholes. Nate makes his way through the highs and lows with a cast of unforgettable characters. You can't help loving this kid--determined, creative,self-effacing, eager, and kind to others even when it's against his self-interest. My whole family adores Nate, and we love this second book as much if not more than the first.

El autor no solamente aclara sus afirmaciones fundamentales sino que examina la validez de dicho movimiento a través de una crítica histórica, hermenéutica y teológica. Richard Stone is Professor of Law at the University of Lincoln, where he was Head of the Law School between 2003 and 2009. Over the past 30 years he has taught at a variety of higher education institutions, including Leicester University (where he held the positions of Head of Department and Dean), Nottingham Trent University (where he was Dean of the Law School), and the Inns of Court School of Law (where he was Principal). Richard's main research interests lie in the areas of civil liberties and human rights.

Does one person have the right to enter another person's premises against his or her will and take that person's goods and property? The answer, as practitioners are aware, is yes -- whenever the law allows.

The circumstances under which entry, search and seizure are allowed - and under which laws they are permitted - constitute the subject matter of this well-known and definitive legal text, recently published in a new fifth edition by the Oxford University Press.

The book's usefulness is unquestionable following the government's announcement of its intention to re-examine the current law pertaining to entry, seizure and distraint, with a view to drafting and enacting new legislation to curb what are seen as the excessive powers taken advantage of by bailiffs -- to cite only one example -- including powers, allegedly, to kick down doors in certain instances.

Following concern about the proliferation of such powers, the practitioner is well advised to get hold of this latest edition of this authoritative text. This is an extremely valuable contribution to the continuing debate on the extent of the powers of the state to interfere with the personal affairs, not to mention the privacy of the private citizen.

If anything, the book certainly reveals the many and varied grey areas which currently loom over and inform (or misinform) just about any discussion of entry, search and seizure issues: the use of force, for example.

What is force exactly? When may it be used? As there is no absolutely unequivocal answer, the rights and wrongs involved remain arguable. Current laws, therefore, are in need of reform, which it is anticipated will be imminent and which will no doubt be examined in the next and sixth edition, we hope, of this excellent book.

Covering any number of issues from the human rights context and remedies, to criminal investigations, civil procedures and revenue customs and excise, the book examines the significant changes in the law that have occurred since publication of the previous edition in 2005.

The chief examples include the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 which came into force in 2006 and the provisions contained in the Protection of Freedom Act 2012 and its associated code of practice.

Research tools abound, including copious footnoting, and at least fifty pages consisting of tables of cases, primary legislation, secondary legislation and international instruments as well as a list of abbreviations and detailed index.

Certainly the book will update you authoritatively on developments in this complicated area of law. As author Richard Stone has stated, the main text of this edition was completed as of September 2012 with further material added in December 2012.

The narration is somewhat meandering; the compositions, while eye-catching and vibrant, are crammed into a small trim size, and some of the pictures would have benefited from further explanation. This succinct memoir is just right for a five-year-old, yet meaty enough to inspire adults. Caldecott Honor artist Lois Ehlert reveals the sources of her ideas, her planning stages and her wonderful collections of words, photos, paints and fabric swatches.

"When I was little, I read all the books on the library shelf, and I thought maybe someday I could make a book," she begins. A collage butterfly alights on a black-and-white photo of herself as a child of perhaps four or five. A collage image of a banded bunch of asparagus (from Eating the Alphabet) acts as a picket fence between a photo of Ehlert's parents ("returning home after hunting for wild asparagus") and a picture of the house where she grew up. Her mother sewed, her father had a basement workshop and, in a corner of the house, he set up a folding table for young Lois: "It was my spot, a place to work and dream." Ehlert shows her "spot" then and now, with more similarities than differences; she draws a linear progression from childhood play to adulthood creativity.

Ideas are everywhere, she tells children. Her sister's cat brushing her ankles inspired Feathers for Lunch. A walk is an opportunity to go "looking for good stuff" (such as seedpods, crab apples and pumpkin seeds, all of which made their way into her books). Ehlert offers scraps of art materials, images, techniques, and memories to create an autobiographical picture book that allows readers to peer into her creative development from a child to an adult. When Ehlert was a child, she would go to the library and think that she could write a book when she grew up. This spark of a thought begins her love of art. From the start, she uses a collage technique to adorn each and every page with images, beginning with herself as a baby with her mother, who was a seamstress. Her father generously shared his basement workshop with her, as to provide a source for supplies when she was young. After school everyday, she came home to create anything that she could imagine and dream of creating. Throughout the book, Ehlert shows images of the tools, workspace, and people that encouraged her love for collage art. Images include flowers, people, art supplies, animals, pictures of her family, et cetera. Ehlert expresses her gratitude towards her parents for pushing her to make things with her hands, such as they did. Readers will find artwork from her other books throughout this piece. This book encourages young children to follow their dreams no matter what they may be. This book would be a fitting resource for an author/artist study in a classroom as encouragement for imaginative readers.

An inspiring new novel from Ehlert

The inspiration behind picture books.

Where does Lois Ehlert get her ideas for her picture books? You'll find the answer in this informative little book. Each page is a riot of color and offers a bit of insight into how this creative person works. Art teachers and those interested in the creative process will find this book very useful.

Although the age group is five and up I really think an older reader will find this book most helpful. There's a lot of really great information here but you need to be mature enough to know what you are reading and be able to understand how to apply some of these artistic tips.

good for beginners, but too wordy for experienced investors

If you are just starting to get into investing, or perhaps you have come upon a large sum of money through inheritance, work or the lottery and you need to learn some basics, then this book is for you. For others, including myself, who already understand the differences between property and stocks, there are better books on investing.

Property vs Shares was written by an Australian and so at times, it reads very Aussie-centric, great if you're in Australia, but some info may not be relevant if you are in a different country. The title was compelling, but I found the actual read overly academic/simplistic, not so practical and plain inaccurate in some cases. The first several chapters discusses the 4 asset classes: cash, fixed income, real estate and stocks, and explains the differences. And the basic conclusion is that there's these two assets, real estate and stocks, that vary according to risk and return. I was just frustrated how long it took to get to this basic information and never really went into strategies (even though the title is "discover your knockout investment strategies".

But the share section completely ignores value investment theory, and takes an inaccurate approach to risk analysis, hardly a fair comparison.

Most wonderful Bible!

What can i say~ this Bible is the most wonderful thing ever! I have an old KJV from when i was a teen that has the E. G. White study helps & LOVE it. But i really like the NKJV best so when i saw this Bible i knew it was for me & it hasn't disappointed at all. I got myself the regular size black leather one, & got my Mom the large print lavender one. They are exactly the same except the size of the letters & the color of the outside. They are both just beautiful. The softness of the real black leather is amazing and the imitation leather of the lavender one is about the same. It has a lot of Mrs. White quotes which are in light blue boxes, words of Christ of red, otherwise black writing. It has a thick back section of extras like a nice concordance, the whole plan of the sanctuary with pictures, the prophesy of Daniel with pictures. Extras like Bible weights & measures, how to read the Bible in a year, & a section on how to use the Bible study system that is in there. The little chains on the side show that particular Bible study verses etc. I know if you get this Bible you will not be sorry! GOD's blessings to your time with HIM.
