A Galactic Easter! Chapter 1 Eggs and Bags
Zack Nelson stared into his hyperphone. On the screen he saw Bert, his best friend from Earth. Zack and his family used to live on Earth. Now they lived on the planet Nebulon.

“What are you doing today, Bert?” asked Zack.

“We’re painting Easter eggs,” Bert replied.



In the background Zack could see Roberta and Darlene, Bert’s two younger sisters. The girls ran into the room carrying a painting set and a basket full of eggs. “Remember when we used to decorate eggs together?” Zack asked.



“That was pretty cool,” said Bert. “Remember doing the egg toss?”

“Totally!” replied Zack. “Especially the year I missed the catch and the egg landed on my new shoes!”

“And what about the sack races?”



“Oh, they were funny. Hop, hop, hop . . . fall! Hop, hop, hop . . . fall!”

Zack and Bert both started laughing hysterically.

“So how do they celebrate Easter there on Nebulon?” asked Bert.

Zack thought for a moment.



“You know, Bert, I’m not really sure,” he replied. “This is our first Easter here.”

“Are there eggs on Nebulon?” Bert asked.

“I know there aren’t any chickens here,” Zack explained. “When we eat eggs, they’re the eggs of the rondo bird. And those eggs are big and round like softballs.”



“Excuse me, Master Just Zack,” said a voice from a speaker just above Zack.

“What’s up, Ira?” Zack asked.

Ira was the Nelson family’s Indoor Robotic Assistant. Although he was a machine, Ira had quickly become a part of the Nelson family.



“Dinner will be ready in five minutes,” Ira explained.

“Thanks, Ira. I’ll be right down,” said Zack. “Gotta go, Bert. Happy Easter! Let’s vid-chat again soon.”

“See ya, Zack.”

How will we celebrate Easter? Zack wondered as he left his room and headed downstairs for dinner.

Going to the Candy Planet!

In the seventh book of the Galaxy Zack series, A Galactic Easter, Zack is going to Gluco for Easter with his family and best friend, Drake. Gluco is a planet made of candy! The flowers are lollipops, marshmallows, and bubble gum. There are jelly bean plants and licorice trees. There’s a river made of caramel with a peppermint bridge.
This is an easy chapter book with cute and funny illustrations on every page. I think that the age range should be 4-9. It’s a huge range but little kids will love the book and older kids who read beyond this level will still like it because it’s fun.
There’s an egg decorating workshop where you call out colors then trace a pattern with your finger on a metal machine with a real egg inside. When you are done, you press a button and an egg comes out decorated exactly like you painted on the machine. In the Easter race course games, Zack and Drake use findex devices to locate metal eggs in a maze. The findex devices shoot a red laser to detect where eggs are. Zack and Drake won an Easter egg-shaped machine that gives you whatever candy you ask for. After Zack got candy for himself and Drake, he shared the candy-giving egg with the other contestants. There is also a message for children in the book. When the final event comes up, Zack wants to cheat to win. His best friend Drake is surprised and a little angry. He tells Zack, “cheating…is worse than losing.” Zack decides that that Drake is right. They don’t cheat but they win and they feel proud.
This is a 5 star book! It is awesome! I wish I could go to Gluco!

Cancelled but

Ordered the kindle version and cancelled as there are so many little things on Laurie's pages that you need to have the book in hand. Arnie the Donut was recommended to me and I have purchased most of Laurie Keller's other books. My grandson, 7, loves funny books and hers are the best hands down!

Penelope Fitzgerald wanted to call her 1990 novel Mistakes Made by Scientists. On the other hand, she laughingly likened it to a Harlequin doctor-nurse romance. The truth about The Gate of Angels is somewhere in between. The doctor, Fred Fairly, is indeed a young Cambridge scientist, and the nurse, Daisy Saunders, has been ejected from a London hospital. If Fred is to win her love, he must make an appropriately melodramatic sacrifice--leaving the academic sanctum of St. Angelicus, a college where all females, even pussycats, are banished ("though the starlings couldn't altogether be regulated").

Daisy, however, suffers from a very non-Harlequin malady, the sort found only in Fitzgerald: "All her life she had been at a great disadvantage in finding it so much more easy to give than to take. Hating to see anyone in want, she would part without a thought with money or possessions, but she could accept only with the caution of a half-tamed animal." Self-protection is certainly not this young woman's strong suit, but we admire her endurance. At one moment, Fred points out that "women like to live on their imagination." Daisy's response? "It's all they can afford, most of them."

Set in Cambridge and London in 1912, The Gate of Angels, then, is a love story and a novel of ideas. Fred, a rector's son, has abandoned religion for observable truths, whereas the undereducated Daisy is a Christian for whom the truth is entirely relative. The novel's strengths lie in what we have come to expect from Fitzgerald: a blend of the hilarious, the out-of-kilter, and the intellectually and emotionally provocative. She confronts her characters with chaos (theoretical and magical), women's suffrage, and seemingly impossible choices, and we can by no means be assured of a happy outcome. "They looked at each other in despair, and now there seemed to be another law or regulation by which they were obliged to say to each other what they did not mean and to attack what they wished to defend."

Fitzgerald's novel also records the onslaught of the modern on traditions and beliefs it will fail to obliterate entirely: women as second-class citizens and a class-ridden society in which the poor suffer deep financial and moral humiliation. The author sees the present pleasures--Cambridge jousts in which debaters must argue not what they believe but its exact opposite--and is often charmed by them. But under the light surface, she proffers an elegant meditation on body and soul, science and imagination, choice and chance. Her characters, as ever, are originals, and even the minor players are memorable: one of Fred's fellows, the deeply incompetent Skippey, is "loved for his anxiety," because he makes others feel comparatively calm.

Fitzgerald fills all of her period novels with odd, charming, and disturbing facts and descriptions. Some, like the catalog of killing medicines Daisy administers, are strictly researched and wittily conveyed: "Over-prescriptions brought drama to the patients' tedious day. Too much antimony made them faint, too much quinine caused buzzing in the ears, too much salicylic acid brought on delirium..." Others are the product of microscopic observation, that is, imagination. Fred's family home is in hyperfertile Blow Halt, a place where no one thinks to buy vegetables, so free are they for the taking. But within this paradise, his mother and sisters are sewing banners for women's suffrage, and nature launches a quiet threat: "Twigs snapped and dropped from above, sticky threads drifted across from nowhere, there seemed to be something like an assassination, on a small scale, taking place in the tranquil heart of summer." --Kerry Fried

English writer Fitzgerald ( The Beginning of Spring ; Innocence ) displays a grace and wit that put her on equal footing with such better-known peers as Muriel Spark. Her own novel, shortlisted for the 1990 Booker prize, is set in the mannered quaintness of pre-WW I Cambridge, yet it goes far beyond the usual Wodehousean scenario of brittle dialogue and eccentric dons in flapping robes. The eccentric dons are by no means absent, but Fitzgerald's writing has a depth, resonance and delicacy that create a sense of genuine comedy rather than of farce. Fred Fairly, a junior fellow at St. Angelicus College, wakes from a bicycle accident to discover that, owing to the misjudgment of a good Samaritan, he has been put in a sickroom bed next to the young woman with whom he has collided. Having made the acquaintance of mysterious Daisy Saunders in this unlikely way, Fairly promptly falls in love with her, though as a St. Angelicus fellow he has pledged himself to a life of celibacy. One can count on Fitzgerald to resolve his dilemma in an unexpected fashion, and she is true to form as the novel swerves toward its satisfying conclusion.

British author Fitzgerald ( The Beginning of Spring , LJ 4/15/89) has concocted another deft comedy of manners, this time set in 1912 Cambridge. A bicycle accident brings about the unlikely pairing of Fred Fairly, a junior fellow of physics at St. Angelicus College, and the enigmatic Daisy Saunders, unfairly dismissed from her place as a nursing probationer. By pursuing his love for Daisy, Fred jeopardizes his career, since St. Angelicus fellows must be celibate. The subsequent investigation into the bicycle accident reveals Daisy's questionable background, and she and Fred are devastated. But the deliberately ambiguous ending seems to hold out a second chance for their happiness. Fitzgerald's elegant prose shines with intelligence and subtle wit as, within this framework, she uses physics as a starting point to examine the existence of both God and the atom. Her flair for well-drawn eccentric characters will appeal to fans of Muriel Spark and Barbara Pym.

A small miracle

Penelope Fitzgerald is truly amazing. This novel is short, easy to read, and often very funny; at the end, you think "How charming!" and put it down. But it keeps echoing in your mind: no detail in the book is insignificant, and everything is subtly linked together to support its central themes. (Compare Pope Benedict's grace, the inscription on Aunt Effie's ring, and the angels on the college gate; or consider Fred's mother and sisters against Professor Matthews' seemingly irrelevant ghost story. And note Professor Flowerdew's qualms about the new atomic theory, which relies on the "unobservable" ... ) The book is far more moving than most novels five times its length, and leaves an indelible impression on the reader.

Nobody does it better

The hero of this novel, a young don, thinks that science will offer certainty and refuge from the vagaries of the spiritual. On the other hand--after he finds himself naked in bed with an unknown woman--the vagaries of the physical threaten to undo him quite. (Remember, this wild novel is set at Cambridge University in 1912, in a college which very much doesn't allow women.) I love and fear each new Fitzgerald novel--love because she's so great, fear because, well, what if I don't like it as much as all the others? I'm finally beginning to learn that fear is unnecessary--enjoyment (not to mention, relativity) is all!

�I don�t say I won�t Fred�
By taking a rest
That declarative double negative is about as definitive as the various parts of this story ever seem to be. When I reviewed "The Blue Flower" I said Ms. Fitzgerald didn't hand the story to you. In "The Gate Of Angels" I'm still trying to decide what the reader was supposed to find, what resolution we were supposed to arrive at. One Commercial Review suggested the end was left for us to decide, and while that may sound like an easy out from a wraith like ending, it is quite reasonable.
Ms. Fitzgerald is meticulous in what she writes, or perhaps what she only implies in this story. A portion of the story centers on debating, with the participants arguing that position which they personally do not believe. Good deeds are punished, perception though erroneous, too is punished, and when one character falls ill and while being helped exclaims "Surely it can't be...?" again it is a negative, not because the help is proffered, but because of the makeup of the individual who has walked on the grass.
I believe as with "The Bookshop" Ms. Fitzgerald unfolds her story much as it would happen were it true. Sometimes we fear a confrontation, only to find it existed in our minds only. Family that we feel we should know better than all others can surprise and shock. Her books are not all neatly tied up with contrivance like most, not everything is resolved, mistakes and wrongs remain, and all is not fixed.
For anyone who has not yet had the pleasure of reading one of this lady's works, a clarification is important. Comparing anything she writes to commercial supermarket checkout romance novels is patently absurd. This Authoress writes at a level that is universally admired by her peers and Professional Critics alike. To make the earlier comparison of her work can be described most charitably, by hoping that someone who never opened one of this lady's books made the comment. Were this to appear at the cinema it would be a stretch to get much past PG. This lady is a writer of distinction, not a purveyor of mindless trash.

Some classics for sure, with arrangements playable by intermediates or even advanced beginners.
The tunes mostly represent Mancini's "greatest" hits, but there are some lesser known ones as well, like "A Shot in the Dark" from the Pink Panther movies.

Rattle!,” and “Whoosh-Whoosh!” fill the air from early morning to late at night when “Shuffle. Shuffle. Whisper-whisper-yawn” takes over. Although such a noisy place could be an assault to the senses, all the residents of this city, especially the broadly smiling vehicles, seem to be remarkably happy as they go about their business. Perhaps it’s Burleigh’s cheerful, rhyming text, which counterbalances the noises that swirl across the chunky, retro backdrops in rich reds, blues, and yellows. “Wake up, city!” booms Burleigh in this companion to 2009’s Clang! Clang! Beep! Beep! In an imaginary metropolis (where coffee is still just five cents a cup), all the vehicles—from bikes to subways—spring to life, most of them with eager smiles and bright headlight eyes. Each spread is snapshot of people happily in motion at a particular time of day, from the early morning garbage pickup to the time when late-night revelers call it quits (“Tired dancers/ slowly walking./ Subway riders/ softly talking”). Mid-afternoon finds school kids on a public bus eager to get home and hit the streets on wheels of their own: “Step on it, Driver./ Show some speed./ Rock it. Roll it./ Take the lead./ School’s out city!” reads one of Burleigh’s clipped couplets. Carpenter’s (Sad Santa) carefree scenes, digitally rendered and saturated in primary colors, are the very picture of urban hustle and bustle, with a jaunty look of 1960s animation. A cheerful sun awakens a sleeping metropolis, and garbage trucks and joggers take to the streets. With each spread, the day progresses. Rhyming text, jam-packed with action, propels the day forward, as each refrain announces the inhabitants’ intentions: “Work time,” “Lunch time,” “Play time,” “Party time.” Exuberant onomatopoeia incorporated into the artwork follows the refrains, as trucks vroom, vans dash, and firetrucks flash. The frenetic pace finally slows at day’s end, as stores close, parties come to an end, and revelers walk home. Hushed tones denote the need for sleep. Carpenter’s retro-styled computer illustrations have a simple charm. Each spread offers something of interest, whether in pattern, composition or character. Done in a simple palette primarily of yellow, blue and red, with a base tone reminiscent of newsprint, the cheery artwork also captures the activity and grit of the city.

“Finally, we have another onomatopoetic read-aloud in “Zoom! Zoom! Sounds of Things that Go in the City,” which takes us through a day’s worth of urban cacophony. Tad Carpenter’s angular, primary-colored illustrations are a perfect visual counterpart to the rattles, bangs, and whooshes in Robert Burleigh’s text; any child obsessed with trucks or backhoes or trains or steam shovels should get a jolt of pleasure from the vehicular energy on display here. “Zoom! Zoom!” seems as if it must be set in New York – until, contrary to the famous Frank Sinatra song, the city goes to sleep. New Yorkers, openhearted and not at all myopic when it comes to pride of place, will forgive Burleigh that snub, while comforting themselves with the knowledge that no one ever says: “Wow…Phoenix! Just like I pictured it.”

Sounds of the city and the vehicles that make them.

When the city wakes up there's plenty of noise as all the cars, buses, trucks, trains, and motorcycles zoom back and forth going about their business. Colorful action illustrations with the accompanying sounds (Rattle and roll - rumble, rumble) provide the action that children, who love looking at various types of cars, truck and trains, will be fascinated by. The rhymed text is perfect for read aloud sessions and let you child chime in with the sound effects.

There's a lot happening on each page thus this is the type of picture book that will draw a child back again and again. So, ZOOM, ZOOM enjoy the sound of the city !

beautiful book for the vehicle-loving toddler in your life

This is a really beautifully written and illustrated book about the vehicles, sounds, and movement of the city. This book is sort of in the spirit of Cars, Trucks, and Things that Go, in the cheerfulness and enthusiasm with which the author and illustrator approach the subject of vehicles. I only wish it came as a board book to prevent my young son from ripping the pages with his enthusiasm (especially for the el train).

(The only comment I have is that this is some mismatch between the color scheme (all primary colors in slightly muted tones, blue, red, yellow, with black and tan accents), and the writing about the bright oranges and other colors. I found that a little jarring. My kid didn't seem to notice, though.)

Cute book!

This is an adorable book about a city's day. All the different kinds of transportation and vehicles that drive throughout all done in a rhyming way. My 3 year old loves this book. He loves it so much I could read it to him all day. I would definitely recommend to any little kid that has any interest in cars.

Investigative Journalism At Its Best

If you have ever wondered why newspaper reporters continue to work for low pay, under terrible conditions, and in an industry that is reportedly on hospice, then this excellent book will tell you. Especially one line on page 72. "Barbara (Laker) began to feel the endorphins of a reporter's high, a blend of panic attack, sugar rush, too much caffeine, and great sex."

Ms. Laker and her "slime sista" colleague, Wendy Ruderman, demonstrate while we need newspapers willing to commit to investigative reporting. This fast paced, easy to read book shows that some times the only thing protecting the public from corrupt officials is reporters willing to take risks, absorb physical and mental abuse, and make sacrifices that can damage their personal lives.

Ms. Laker and Ms. Ruderman are reporters for the Philadelphia Daily News, a feisty tabloid proud to be known as The People Paper. The Daily News, and its sister broadsheet,The Philadelphia Inquirer, are struggling financially like all other big city papers. As the two work on their "Tainted Justice" series of stories, rumors abound that the papers will be sold or the Daily News shuttered or some other disaster awaits just after the next edition. They must put aside this daily dose of despair and focus on what they know how to do; follow a story wherever it takes them. And this is quite a story indeed.

It is filled with real life characters right out of Damon Runyon. There is Benny Martinez, the whining, drug-addicted police informant who garners little sympathy; Jeff Cujdik, a cop willing to bend and break the rules to raise his arrest scores; Lady Gonzalez and Dagma Rodriquez, two brave women willing to put it on the line to stop a serial sexual molester with a badge, Tom Tolstoy; and Brian Tierney, CEO of the Inquirer and Daily News, who strives to maintain local ownership of the papers. (Full disclosure, Tierney is a long-time personal friend.)

There are villians on both sides of the law in this story. Low-life drug dealers selling their merchandise near school yards and cops willing to steal from innocent shop keepers who are trying to eke out a living in some the city's worst neighborhoods.

The villains here will most likely infuriate readers, but there are heroes who will inspire.

There is Gar Joseph, who reminds me of the first city editor I had at a newspaper now long gone. There is Michael Day, Daily News editor, who is willing to commit the resources to Laker and Ruderman's work. There is "Ray," a great Philadelphia cop who despises what bad cops can do to the reputations of all police officers. There is Laker's protective neighbor Dutch, who knows the dangers she faces. And there is "Seven," Laker's dog who has to endure late feedings as she works countless hours.

The story is even more interesting as Laker and Ruderman write about the damage that journalism can do to their personal lives. Laker is recovering from the end of her 25-year-old marriage and Ruderman's husband and two sons question her priorities. (In an afterward, Ruderman notes that her marriage did end, in no small way because of her commitment to her career.)

Newspapers are wonderful places to work. I spent 17 of my younger years as a reporter and editor. Thomas Wolfe once wrote that to be a reporter on the trail of a great story is to feel rush to the cerebral cortex that is orgasmic.

The real hero of the story isThe Daily News and papers like it across the country. If our nation's newspapers die we will lose an important protection many take for granted. Without the work these two women did, a few Philadelphia cops would still be putting innocent people in jail and stealing from hard-working shopkeeprs trying to get by in the rough neighborhoods of the Philadelphia Badlands. No one would know of women sexually assaulted by a cop during drug busts.

In 2010 Laker and Ruderman won the coveted Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Journalism. It was only the third time in the paper's history that it won the highest journalistic honor. No one familiar with the challenges of journalism would deny that they deserved the award.

Today they both still work at adjoining desks at The Daily News, although Ruderman did spend a year as a police reporter for The New York Times before returning to her roots in Philadelphia. They still deal with the rumors that their paper is on the verge of joining others in the newspaper graveyard. And they are still doing what they love. Being damn good newspaper reporters.

I Only Stopped to Pee

Need I say more??? I honestly don't remember the last time I read an entire book in one day. My wife left for a craft show and I was in the same chair and wearing the same clothes as she did when she left 7 hours earlier. If there was one positive thing about the local golf courses being closed (due to snow), it was the fact I wouldn't have to put this book down. It is extremely rare that a book grabs and pulls me in. Fantastic story. Real life Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys action. This book is told in such a personal way, you'd swear Wendy and Barbara were sitting next to you describing the whole scene and the going-ons in there lives. It doesn't matter that I read the Philadelphia Daily News every day or the fact I live in the western Philadelphia suburbs but work in Center City. You could live in Tibet and still feels the essence of this treasured book. You'd swear this was fiction but the fact that this is real life drama playing out makes this story even more compelling. Simply Put: it's the best damn book I've read in a long, long time.

Busted is a homerun for Barbara Laker and Wendy Ruderman.

It took me three sittings to read Busted, and each time I had to force myself to put it down. Wendy and Barbara's story about uncovering police corruption and misdeeds is riveting. You feel their anxiety as they knock on doors or wander down streets in the heart Philadelphia's worst neighborhoods. Balanced against their intense investigative work is the plight of the Daily News and their personal lives. I am very tempted to read it all over again. Outstanding!
