From Publishers Weekly
The professional becomes personal in Agatha-winner McPherson&'s slow-moving seventh 1920s mystery featuring Edinburgh PI Dandy Gilver (after 2012&'s Dandy Gilver and an Unsuitable Day for a Murder). Now one half of the detective agency Gilver and Osborne, Dandy is horrified to learn that girlhood friend Fleur Lipscott, the youngest of three sisters of a family Dandy has always admired, might be in deep trouble. Older sisters Pearl and Aurora fear that Fleur is about to bolt from St. Columba&'s, the Wigtownshire school where she teaches. Dandy travels to St. Columba&'s, where her being mistaken for a new teacher allows her to infiltrate the school. Dandy soon realizes that instructors are quitting, being fired, or disappearing at an alarming rate. The discovery of an unidentified woman&'s body raises the stakes. Dandy&'s droll conversations with her charmingly stuffy husband provide some needed levity in this overly convoluted cozy. Lisa Moylett, Coombs Moylett Literary Agency. (Nov.)

From Booklist
Upper-class Scottish sleuth Dandy Gilver recalls a perfect summer in her teens spent in the bosom of the Lipscott family—the widowed mother and her golden daughters, Aurora, Pearl, and Fleur—when decades later a worried Pearl asks Dandy to see what has gone wrong with Fleur, the adored youngest. Fleur, an imaginative child who became a wild teenager, is now a fearful English teacher at a girls’ school who tells Dandy she’s killed four people. When a woman’s body washes up on a nearby beach, Fleur proclaims this number five, then disappears. As Alec Osborne, Dandy’s detective colleague, looks into the recent departures of several of the school’s instructors, Dandy investigates from her new position on the school staff, and together they try to account for Fleur’s four previous corpses. Dandy’s reminiscences of the Lipscotts cast a lovely patina on the seventh in this fine series, which moves between lighthearted and deadly serious, with intuitive, no-nonsense Dandy dealing with flighty girls and despairing adults with equal aplomb and showing increasing assurance in her professional and personal life. --Michele Leber

Review
This is a beguiling book whose 1920s setting, light tone, and beautifully developed main characters draw you ever deeper into the central puzzle, or perhaps puzzles, which take on an increasingly dark tone as the story progresses. The background is utterly convincing, and there is a considerable amount of pleasure in simply learning more about Scotland in the 1920s. Most important of all, however, is that this is a thoroughly enjoyable read whose whose twists and turns are genuinely intriguing. An absolutely outstanding murder mystery... UndiscoveredScotland.co.uk 1930s lady detective Dandy Gilver lands a sleuthing gig in a setting straight out of Enid Blyton. Cosier than a pair of WI-knitted mittens, 'Corpses' serves up murder most foul - and is also good for several giggles. Time Out Dandy Gilver is: - Brisk, baffled, heroic, kindly, scandalised and - above all- very funny. Another Dandy Gilver triumph!
By andiesenji
Dandy Gilver is a terrific character for the heroine in a cozy mystery. She is smart, self-sufficient and sometimes a little too reckless but always thinking ahead and conscious of her place in society.
I am a big fan of mysteries set in the 1920s and '30s because I grew up in a family where stories about those times were not that long ago.
I like the descriptions of the places in which the stories about Dandy take place, her comments and asides reminding herself of important clues and certainly the pace of the stories. The comments about the various characters both one-off and continuing from the earlier stories are illuminating and make the stories more interesting.
I feel that I know Hugh and how he will react to the various escapades in which Dandy finds herself and I certainly enjoy the adventures with Alec. I can just see the expression on the face of Dandy's maid when she finds Dandy has done something that "ruins" her clothing and shoes and I can imagine the exasperation of the police who find themselves indebted to Dandy for finding important clues.
These are fun to read and I eagerly look forward to the next.

Dandy Gilver Investigates Murder and Mayhem at a Private Boarding School for Girls
By J. B. Hoyos
A childhood friend, Pearl Lipscott, asks Dandy Gilver to investigate her sister Fleur. When she was a child, the rambunctious Fleur was the proverbial "life of the party." Now she lives like a cloistered nun, working as a schoolmistress at St. Columba's in Portpatrick, Scotland. When Dandy and her sleuthing partner, Alec Osbourne, arrive at St. Columba's, they find a foreboding mansion sitting on the edge of a sea cliff; it is a hotbed of corruption among its students and staff. When the body of a drowned woman washes ashore, Fleur swears she murdered her and flees. Dandy and Alec learn that Fleur may be responsible for a series of gruesome deaths spanning decades.

If the reader has patience, they will fine Catriona McPherson's latest novel, "Dandy Gilver and a Bothersome Number of Corpses," a very intriguing, bizarre mystery. The setting is superb: an enormous, creepy mansion, with a maze of rooms, which sits precariously on a cliff, overlooking a treacherous ocean. The girls school reminded me of Collinwood on the classic gothic soap opera, "Dark Shadows." There is also the secluded, quaint fishing village of Portpatrick where the superstitious, gossipy peasants are accustomed to discovering drowned bodies. The creepy mansion, jagged cliffs, crashing waves, and cold ocean combine to create an ominous atmosphere.

There is also an unusual assortment of characters. It is obvious that Fleur Lipscott is mentally unbalanced due to the death of her father, the Major, during WWI; she suffers from delusions. Another strange bird is the bipolar Ivy Shanks, the head mistress; one moment she is speaking merrily in silly rhymes and the next she is cold, blunt and harsh. The students lounge around as though at a resort while the overtaxed schoolmistresses labor as though at a prison. Fleur's family is an extremely wealthy, but eccentric, one consisting mostly of ladies who are well past the bloom of their youth and dwell too much, like many of us, in a rose-tinted past.

Set in the 1920's, "Dandy Gilver and a Bothersome Number of Corpses" is an historical mystery. With its archaic, antiquated language, it reads like one of the classics I had to study in high school and college. Nevertheless, I must applaud McPherson in having undergone extensive research in making me feel as though I am reading a British mystery that was written in the 1920's. The details given to dress, social etiquette and technology, or lack of, are extraordinary. I found it laughable that the girls at St. Columba's detested reading "Silas Marner." I, on the other hand, found it extremely entertaining when I read it at their age. To each his own.

Fans of historical mysteries and old-fashioned whodunits will enjoy "Dandy Gilver and a Bothersome Number of Corpses" [following "Dandy Gilver and an Unsuitable Day for a Murder" (Dandy Gilver and an Unsuitable Day for a Murder (Dandy Gilver Mysteries (Minotaur Books))) and "Dandy Gilver and the Proper Treatment of Bloodstains" (By Catriona McPherson:Dandy Gilver and the Proper Treatment of Bloodstains [Hardcover])]. The pacing could have been faster if there had been more corpses discovered during the present day. Most of the suspicious deaths occur in the past. The title made me hope for a high body count mystery thriller involving a vicious serial killer. I was sorely mistaken. Nevertheless, I was rewarded with a very satisfying whodunit that was both intriguing and creepy. Friends Dandy Gilver and Alec Osbourne make a likeable sleuthing pair. I hope to see them together in future installments of Catriona McPherson's popular series.

Lots of activity but a plot that moves really S---L---O---W...
By Amazon Customer PatH
I couldn't believe that I was almost done with the book and still didn't have a clue as to what was going on! One missing friend becomes a missing friend and a dead body on the shore, then two missing people and a dead body on the shore, then MAYBE there are 5 murders that a missing friend may have committed, and mysterious goings-on at a Scottish girl's boarding school where the teachers work harder on the lessons than the students. Lot of misunderstandings that become outright lies, but only for the right reasons. (Is there a right reason to let people think things that aren't true?)
A little too convoluted to enjoy, and there never really seemed to be any drama to the mystery. I never got the impression that anyone was actually in any danger. If I were Dandy's husband I'd lock her in a closet and tell her to stop acting so silly. "Bothersome" would be a good description for the wife turned self-described detective.

A Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising (New York Review Books Classics), by Miron Bialoszewski

On August 1, 1944, Miron Białoszewski, later to gain renown as one of Poland’s most innovative poets, went out to run an errand for his mother and ran into history. With Soviet forces on the outskirts of Warsaw, the Polish capital revolted against five years of Nazi occupation, an uprising that began in a spirit of heroic optimism. Sixty-three days later it came to a tragic end. The Nazis suppressed the insurgents ruthlessly, reducing Warsaw to rubble while slaughtering some 200,000 people, mostly through mass executions. The Red Army simply looked on.

Białoszewski’s blow-by-blow account of the uprising brings it alive in all its desperate urgency. Here we are in the shoes of a young man slipping back and forth under German fire, dodging sniper bullets, collapsing with exhaustion, rescuing the wounded, burying the dead. An indispensable and unforgettable act of witness, A Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising is also a major work of literature. Białoszewski writes in short, stabbing, splintered, breathless sentences attuned to “the glaring identity of ‘now.’” His pages are full of a white-knuckled poetry that resists the very destruction it records.

Madeline G. Levine has extensively revised her 1977 translation, and passages that were unpublishable in Communist Poland have been restored.

Review
"Probably the finest book about the insurrection of 1944. . . . Białoszewski’s book was about the city and its people; in the course of his narration, the two become interchangeable.” —John Carpenter

“A Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising is a faithful, antiheroic, and nonpathetic description of disintegration: bombed houses, whole streets, human bodies disintegrate, as do objects of everyday use and human perceptions of the world.” —Czesław Miłosz

"In a country in which writers were supposed to uphold the moral conscience, Białoszewski was the opposite, a champion of insignificance…When the moment came, he filled page after page with details about life amid the rubble — about what it was like to pick dust and debris out of one’s soup, to visit a barber, to attend a Chopin concert with guns and bombs going off all around, or to use a latrine…” —Daniel Lazare, Jacobin

“A master of grammatical games, puns, and colloquial speech patterns, this dark-minded, philosophically inclined scrutinizer of the humblest objects of daily life is enjoying more popularity and critical attention a quarter century after his death than during his lifetime. Outside of Poland, he remains best known for his Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising.” —The Iowa Review

“Białoszewski very quickly emerged, surfaced for me as the most exciting and most intriguing Polish writer of what now would be the second half of the century.” —Chicago Review

“Białoszewski demonstrates that each loss also offers a new way of seeing and something new to see, even if what comes into view is only a ‘grey naked hole.’ He manages to generate a new form from absence and emptiness as the ‘greynakedhole’ takes on a life of its own. Seen this way, the world’s inescapable losses generate not only pain, but also creative possibility and even perhaps ‘inexhaustible joy.’ ” —Clare Cavanaugh, Partisan Review

“This most ‘private’ author of postwar Polish literature disregards discourses of history so deeply embedded in the Polish literary tradition; rather he focuses on the mundane aspects of the everyday life, usually from an autobiographical perspective and using an overtly colloquial language. Although Białoszewski’s works have stirred many discussions, most of these have focused on his treatment of genres and language.” —Joanna Nizynska, professor of Polish, Harvard University

“Poems of Miron Białoszewski is the book I hope to one day hold in my hands. A great post-war Polish poet, Białoszewski wrote work radically different from that of his contemporaries—Miłosz, Świr, Kamieńska, Herbert, and Szymborska—but his poetry was just as powerful and important to the development of the contemporary European lyric.... When I mentioned [him] to Tomaž Šalamun in a recent conversation, Tomaž’s face lit up: ‘Białoszewski, when he is translated and available in English, will cause an explosion in American poetry!’ One hopes so.” —Ilya Kaminsky, poetry editor, Words Without Borders

About the Author
Miron Białoszewski (1922–1983) was born in Warsaw, the son of a postal clerk. During the German occupation of Poland in World War II, he studied Polish literature in an underground school, though he never obtained any kind of degree. Not a combatant, he was deported to a German work camp following the Warsaw Uprising, escaped after a month and, as the war drew to its end, returned to his devastated city. Białoszewski worked as a journalist, writing poetry at night, though it was not until 1956 that his first volume of poetry, Obroty rzeczy (The Revolution of Things), appeared to great acclaim. Additional volumes of poetry and short prose texts followed, while Białoszewski also wrote plays for and acted with the collaborative and experimental Tarczyńska Street Theater. A Memoir of the Warsaw Uprising came out in 1970.

Madeline G. Levine is Kenan Professor of Slavic Literatures Emerita at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her translations from the Polish include The Woman from Hamburg and Other True Stories by Hanna Krall, Bread for the Departed by Bogdan Wojdowski, four volumes of prose by Czesław Miłosz including Beginning with My Streets: Essays and Recollections and Miłosz’s ABC’s, and a new English version of the collected stories of Bruno Schulz (forthcoming).

A Personal Account of the Warsaw Uprising
By Jan Peczkis
This was originally written in Polish in 1970. Owing to the fact that the author uses somewhat unorganized narrative, the reader of this book may find it difficult to follow it. There is, however, a helpful glossary (pp. 233-234) of Polish-related allusions.

Bialoszewski commonly compares the carnage of the Uprising with that of the original German siege of Warsaw in September 1939. For instance: "When on one day--the 23rd, I think--18,000 shells fell on Warsaw. September 25--that was the decisive day--from morning to night, for twelve hours, Warsaw was bombarded." (p. 80).

In common with many authors describing the Warsaw Uprising, Bialoszewski elaborates on the deadly weapons which the Germans had--and against which the Poles had no defense. This includes the Nebelwerfer ("roaring cow", "bellowing cow", "wardrobe", etc.). He comments: "I saw apartment houses which had been uprooted by the `cows', narrow ones, but sometimes four stories high." (pp. 164-165). There were also the giant German artillery pieces: "The `berthas' were the worst. They were, as far as I can remember, three-quarter ton bombs. Three quarters of a ton isn't too bad. Only it was three quarters of a ton of bomb, and straight from the sky, at a slant. I think that was the decisive factor...I'm talking only about the toll among the cellars." (p. 165)

Bialoszewski also discusses the evacuation of Warsaw following the capitulation of the Uprising on October 2, 1944. There was astonishment that so many civilians were still alive.

In 1946, after the Uprising and the war itself, Bialoszewski personally observed the cremated remains of tens of thousands of Polish civilians who had been murdered by the Germans and their collaborators at Wola (p. 35)

Warsaw Ghetto Uprising: Chaos and Loss
By dolgag
The book is a stirring montage of chaos, destruction, fear, and camaraderie.
It is to be skimmed for full effect. There is no real pretense of precise chronology;. and that's a good thing. A swirling nightmarish experience has left the young man's head spinning with events.

Some of the most touching scenes are of churches and nunneries and monasteries destroyed, but not before they pitched in to help their fellow Poles --even an order of nuns never before outside the convent walls. The images are vivid. It will become a film.

A humorous and charming investigation into what it really means to have proper manners

Most of us know a bit about what passes for good manners—holding doors open, sending thank-you notes, no elbows on the table—and we certainly know bad manners when we see them. But where has this patchwork of beliefs and behaviors come from? How did manners develop? How do they change? And why do they matter so much? In examining English manners, Henry Hitchings delves into the English character and investigates what it means to be English.
Sorry! presents an amusing, illuminating, and quirky audit of British manners. From basic table manners to appropriate sexual conduct, via hospitality, chivalry, faux pas, and online etiquette, Hitchings traces the history of England's customs and courtesies. Putting some of the most astute observers of humanity—including Jane Austen and Samuel Pepys—under the microscope, he uses their lives and writings to pry open the often downright peculiar secrets of the English character. Hitchings's blend of history, anthropology, and personal journey helps us understand the bizarre and contested cultural baggage that goes along with our understanding of what it means to have good manners.

From Booklist
Although most people have some idea of what good (or bad) manners are, it’s less likely they know where they come from. Hitchings addresses that through a comprehensive historical review, with some fun tidbits along the way. He brings the perspectives of the past to bear on customs of the present, using examples from writers such as Samuel Pepys, Lord Chesterfield, and Fanny Trollope. This rambling examination is concerned only with English manners, not those of other British countries. Hitchings is affectionate toward typically English mannerisms such as tactfully saying one thing, when meaning another—when told, “We really must have lunch sometime,” does anyone believe it’ll actually happen? The book contains some illuminating examples of how manners are a social construct and can vary widely across cultures. The tour of manners encompasses living conditions, language, social structures, innovations, and philosophy throughout centuries. This is not a book of etiquette instruction, but deconstruction. For those who wish to dig deeper into the myriad forces at work behind polite customs, large and small, the book is sure to please. --Bridget Thoreson

Review

“Henry Hitchings, the author of Sorry! The English and Their Manners has his work cut out for him. Thankfully, he seems to relish ripping the vanities and entitlements of self-proclaimed behavioral experts to shreds. Hitchings . . . has earned a reputation as that rare nonfiction author who suffuses his rigorous (and at times slightly eccentric) scholarly research with enough wit and lively skepticism to render otherwise dull passages entertaining. This reputation proves accurate: as the author embarks on his colorful, rambling, and critically exacting exploration of the evolution of English rules of behavior, it becomes obvious that he could make a detailed history of the canned food industry sing like a coloratura . . . He comes across more as a scattered but lovable history professor whose classes are legendarily entertaining . . . Not only does Hitchings charm us with illustrative details straight out of the gate, but, as he advances from medieval mores through the Renaissance and on to the Victorian era, he never loses sight of the conflicts inherent in the regulation of human behavior . . . The sharpness of Hitchings's analysis and the intensity of his passion for his subject shine through on every page.” ―Heather Havrilesky, The Barnes and Noble Review

“In this terrifically entertaining, surprisingly thoughtful book about manners and Englishness, Hitchings describes his own country's culture as a paradox: simultaneously rude and polite . . . Like a good conversation, [Sorry!] allows for many fruitful digressions . . . Hitchings is a lively guide through these thickets, pointing out the bizarre while inviting us to take another look at just how our conventional manners, so inevitable to us now, arose from history, circumstance, and luck.” ―Kate Tuttle, The Boston Globe

“[Sorry! is an] entertaining and informative survey of English manners past and present.” ―Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post

“Part social history, part cultural critique, the book moves humorously from the ancient to the modern with pithy anecdotes and amusing factoids. In the medieval court of Henry II, ‘One shouldn't attack an enemy while he is defecating, should avoid sharing secrets with one's wife, and ought to look towards the ceiling when belching.' . . . This seriously amusing and illuminating book goes a long way toward explaining to Anglophobe, Anglophile, and the just plain puzzled why ‘the average Briton says "Sorry" eight times a day.'” ―Publishers Weekly

“Hitchings clearly has fun with his subject(s), both the English themselves and the code of conduct that has evolved since the Middle Ages--when, he notes, someone commodiously counseled that ‘one should not attack an enemy while he is at stool.' Evolve is a useful term here, since, as Hitchings notes, manners are not static . . . Hitchings' book . . . [is] a pleasure to read.” ―Kirkus

A disappointment
By Stephen W. McKeever
The subject matter appears almost random. The flow of the text is rambling and the reader is left searching for a consistent theme. There are a few bright spots in which the reader is a has a "that's interesting" moment, but these are all too few and mostly the consistent question the reader has in mind while reading is "where is this heading?". The prose is pleasant, but overall the book is disappointing.

This volume in the Writers Lives series offers a reassessment of Shakespeare and his creative output from his earliest work through his ‘mature' drama and the late plays, taking into account our current knowledge of Shakespeare's biography and consensus on key textual, critical and theatrical issues.

William Baker offers a comprehensive but accessible introduction to Shakespeare's work and places it in the contexts of what is known of his life and activities. Avoiding speculation of a biographical, critical or textual nature, he focuses instead on an account of what is known of Shakespeare and his achievement at the end of the first decade of the twenty-first century.

The Law of TUPE Transfers, by Charles Wynn-Evans

The UK's transfer of undertakings legislation has historically been one of the most complex, unpredictable, and commercially significant aspects of the employment law regime. It has far-reaching financial, human resource, and practical significance in the private and public sectors, in relation to a wide range of transactions such as outsourcing, contract tenders, and asset disposals. Notwithstanding the reforms made to the TUPE legislation in 2006, the area has
continued to develop, and the significant volume of case law since 2006 has explored the detailed operation of the legislation in relation to issues such as service provision changes, the operation of TUPE in insolvency situations and the treatment of pension rights on a TUPE transfer.

The successor to the best-selling Blackstone's Guide to the New Transfer of Undertakings Legislation, this new title expertly explains all aspects of TUPE law and practice, covering issues such as when the regulations apply, the legal effects of a transfer, the information and consultation requirements of the legislation, and claims arising from transfer related dismissals. Alongside a comprehensive analysis of the legislation and all subsequent amendments, the author looks in detail
at recent developments, as well as analysing the operation of the legislation in the specific contexts of pensions and insolvency.

Review
Reviews of Blackstone's Guide to the New Transfer of Undertakings Legislation:

"Quite simply, it reads well. The discussion of the case law is of a particularly high standard ... this is an excellent work, of which the author should be proud, and which is easy to recommend to those dealing with the subject." --Professor Ian Smith, New Law Journal, 4 August 2006

"It is without doubt the best analysis of either the new TUPE regulations or the pre-existing law that the reviewer has read ... this timely and accessible work is worth appreciably more than it costs to buy." --Geoffrey Mead, Employment Law Journal, September 2006

Indispensable for Employment Lawyers....
By Phillip Taylor MBE
[[VIDEOID:moTA9MJAG9SPVR]]A NEW TITLE ON TUPE

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

A new title from the Oxford University Press, this useful book covers a number of issues that have merged in the wake of the TUPE regulations which came into force in 2006.

TUPE in case you can't remember, refers to Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment).

As it came into force originally in 1982, TUPE has had a significant impact on employment law, with massive implications for employers and employees in both the private and public sectors.

Both employers and employees therefore need to be punctilious about its correct interpretation and aware of the possible pitfalls and certainly financial consequences that may result if it is misunderstood.

Although the 2006 TUPE sought to make the regulations clearer, many issues remain somewhat opaque, hence the usefulness of this book which examines and analyses the legislation and the many developments which have emerged since 2006 in case law.

It is interesting to note that the TUPE legislation from the outset was not without its critics, some of whom claimed that it restricted the ability of contractors to restructure their workforces, thus undermining efficiency. In a TUPE case of 1981, the TUPE legislation was referred to as `a Pandora's box of ambiguities.'

The European Commission, however, predictably took the view that `the Directive has proved to be an invaluable instrument for the protection of workers in the event of the reorganization of an undertaking by ensuring peaceful and consensual economic and technological restructuring....' And so forth.

In short, as Wynn-Evans explains, a central objective of TUPE is `as to protect employees from the consequences at common law of a disposal or other transfer by their employer of the business in which they work.'

Focusing primarily on the private sector and, in the author's words, `finalized in the shadow of potential TUPE reform,' the book elaborates on all aspects of TUPE, covering a range of issues, from the legal effects of a transfer to consultation requirements and claims arising from transfer related dismissals.

Much to the advantage of the practitioner, as well as the general reader, the text itself as well as the organisation of the book is clear, logical and accessible. Those doing further research will appreciate the detailed table of contents and the extensive index which certainly aids navigation. Also note the almost fifteen pages containing tables of cases, and legislation as well as a table of abbreviations and terms.

Anyone involved in employment law, lawyer or non-lawyer, should acquire this important book. The law is stated to be as at 21 December 2012.

Gr 4–6—Rosemary Bliss thought it was bad enough that her family's magical bakery had been forced to close but now she's been kidnapped. Taken to the Mostess Corporation compound (the biggest industrial bakery in the country), she must perfect five recipes for the owner, Mr. Butter, if she ever wants to see her family again. Rose soon finds out that the recipes contain evil magic that makes people crave more and more of Mostess's mediocre creations, with dangerous consequences. Scared about losing her family, Rose dutifully creates the recipes for Glo-Balls, Mooney Pyes, Dinky Doodle Donuts, King Things, and The Dinky, all the while secretly creating antidotes for the vile effects they cause. With the help of her talking cat, the chefs under her control in the Mostess kitchen, and her less-than-serious brothers, Rose attempts to disrupt the nefarious plot of Mr. Butter and the International Society of the Rolling Pin to take over the world through mass-produced baked goods. Though, predictably, good magic triumphs over evil, it is not clear until the very end that Rose's plan will succeed. Sure to entice aspiring chefs as well as lovers of sweets and stirring adventures, readers should start with the first book in the series to get the true flavor of the characters, while those who have already taken a bite will enjoy another delightful treat in this third installment. Like a good cup of hot chocolate, this book will leave readers satisfied, but with the hope of another cup soon.—Clare A. Dombrowski, Amesbury Public Library, MA

From Booklist
Two books on and Rosemary is still cleaning up the mess created in Bliss (2012). Just weeks before her thirteenth birthday, she is kidnapped by representatives of the Mostess Corporation. Aunt Lily, who vanished after losing the Gala des Gâteaux Grands, had been working with them to create recipes for mass-produced cakes and cookies, and now they want Rosemary to finish the job so they can take over the world with their magically enhanced pastries. There is a certain amount of predictability at play as clever Rosemary, with help from her impulsive brothers and a talking cat, outsmarts villains who are not so much evil as cartoonishly nefarious. But fans of the series won’t mind, since the book follows a winning recipe: a well-meaning heroine and lots of cake. Grades 4-7. --Kara Dean

Another Slice Please!
By Dena
The only problem with the Bliss series is that every time I read one of the books, I have an uncontrollable urge to eat cake. And cookies. Or any other baked dessert.

This is the third installment of the Bliss series, and I sincerely hope that it won't be the last! The ending left me hopeful that there will be more books. Although Bite-Sized Magic is part of a series, it can be read on its own. In this book, Rose is abducted by a sinister man looking to take over the world through the use of evil baked goods. He forces Rose to perfect the recipes until they are as evil as he is.

Packed with light-hearted humor, Bite-Sized Magic is a delicious confection just begging to be devoured. Readers of all ages will love this delectable tale of cake-like proportions. It is funny, quick to read, and an all around treat! Kids will fall in love with Rose, her brothers (Ty will be happy!), and the comical team of assisting bakers. If you are looking for a great family read, give this series a try.

Verdict: Another slice please!

Rose is kidnapped by a man named Mr.Butter, and is [at first] stuck with Gus, the old Scottish Fold we all love. Mr.Butter is making his Mostess company (an evil baking company that plans to use magicc to get people to buy their things) expanded by using Rose to make the snacks seem irresistible and so Mr.Butter will get lots of money (blah blah blah blah). How will Rose find her family and get back? How should I know? should be the questions running through your head. To the first one: read the book!!! For the second: who says you should?

A grand look through fiction at the lives touched by the movement from agragian to factory history in Scotland.
By MARILYN G. DERIGHT
A grand look, through 3 connected long novels, of the movement from the little rented Scots farms to the towns and then to the cities. Following one character through all the changes works well as the socio-economic and religious changes register clearly in her life. He's a writer of dozens of books about Scotland.

Timeless, flowing story
By Lehua of Pacifica
This is a beautiful book and also a must for writers. Each chapter succeeds as a stand-alone story, yet those stories are woven skillfully into an even more meaningful whole. It's not a book I pick up often, but I do come back to it again and again over time.

Murder and Moonshine: A Mystery (Moonshine Mystery Series Book 1), by Carol Miller

All small towns have secrets---and plenty of them---as every small-town waitress knows. Daisy is no different. A young, recently separated waitress at H & P's Diner in sleepy southwestern Virginia, she hears more than her fair share of neighborhood gossip while serving plates of hash and peach cobbler. But when a reclusive old man shows up at the diner one day, only to drop dead a few minutes later, Daisy quickly learns that some secrets are more dangerous to keep than others---especially when there are money and moonshine involved.

The man's death was suspicious, and no longer sure who she can trust, Daisy turns sleuth while also seeking to protect her sick mother and keeping a handle on Aunt Emily, her goading, trigger-happy landlord. Caught between whiskey and guns, a handsome ATF agent and a moonshine-brewing sweet talker, and a painful past and a dangerous present, Daisy has her work cut out for her. There's trouble brewing in her small town, and before it passes, many secrets will come to light.

Carol Miller makes a memorable debut in Murder and Moonshine, the first of an intriguing new mystery series.

After a fire took her father, the government took her family’s land. Struggling to take care of herself and her ailing mother, Daisy McGovern makes ends meet as a small-town waitress. When a local recluse drops dead in H&P’s Diner, a telltale jelly-jar lid suggests that a bad batch of moonshine might be to blame. ATF agent Ethan Kinney soon arrives on the scene and picks Daisy as his tour guide through the unnamed roads of rural Virginia. Daisy also runs interference between Ethan and the “shoot first” Balsam brothers—thanks to Rick Balsam’s long-standing crush on Daisy. Down on her luck but still plenty plucky, Daisy is a sweet southern gal with a loyal heart and a long memory. Readers will enjoy watching the love triangle between Daisy, the local bad boy, and the federal agent unfold. The second book in the series, Mayhem and Moonshine, is coming next year. --Karen Keefe

Review
"The surprising denouement of this impressive debut along with the excellent narrator makes the total package an entertaining performance." --AudioFile Magazine on Murder and Moonshine (audiobook version)

“With an ordinary heroine ensnared in extraordinary events, a colorful rendering of southern Virginia and a terrifying climax, 'Murder and Moonshine' marks the beginning of a potent series.” ―The Richmond Times-Dispatch

“Miller's debut amuses but also slices into the heart of a proud region...Easy to read, shot with romance, and full of country aphorisms, this book succeeds both at puzzling and moving readers emotionally.” ―Library Journal (starred debut of the month)

“Appealing debut...Miller has produced a story full of intriguing clues and misdirection, liberally laced with Southern charm.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Small-town shenanigans in the Appalachians pit a waitress against a furtive murderer and an even deadlier foe....Daisy is both strong and vulnerable....Miller's debut uses a light touch and a gift for scene painting in its skillful balance of people and puzzle.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Down on her luck but still plenty plucky, Daisy is a sweet southern gal with a loyal heart and a long memory. Readers will enjoy watching the love triangle between Daisy, the local bad boy, and the federal agent unfold.” ―Booklist

“[A] lively debut. Miller keeps the tone light in Murder and Moonshine while delivering an incisive look at Southwestern Virginia….Moonshine, land deals, and family grudges are folded into the entertaining plot. Miller elevates her debut with a likable heroine, whose involvement…comes from her personal connection with the land and its people. Murder and Moonshine is long on Southern charm, but doesn't succumb to stereotypes about country life. The characters are a bit eccentric...but they are realistically and thoughtfully explored by Miller.” ―Oline H. Cogdill, Mystery Scene Magazine

Mystery Read with Wide Appeal
By James M. Robinson
Whether you are a "mystery" fan or not, you'll probably enjoy reading this tale. From the very beginning, the author draws you into the characters, the locale, and the story. I think most readers would find this a very easy read, but don't let that mislead you, because the writer's style incorporates wonderful descriptions that transport you to a part of the country most people are not familiar with. I would fully expect this to be only the first in a line of successful books from Ms. Miller. Very enjoyable! Congratulations to this new author and to readers: enjoy the experience!

Mystery debut
By Shelleyrae
There is a touch of humour, romance and moments of high tension in Murder and Moonshine. The story has more authenticity than I usually expect from a cozy mystery and the plot is well thought out, twisting in unexpected directions. While I found the pace a bit slow initially, the story does gather momentum as it unfolds and I was surprised by the denouement. At its heart lies family secrets, murder and a conspiracy of greed.

Daisy proves to be feisty and resourceful with a history of tragedy - from the death of her father and the loss of her family home, to being abandoned by her husband, and to now coping with her mother's prolonged illness. Her motivation to become involved in the mystery makes sense, the murders are linked to her old homestead and both she and her mother are in danger.

Of course, no southern murder mystery would be complete without a cast of quirky characters from the gun toting Aunt Emily to the moonshine brothers, Rick and Bobby.

I enjoyed Murder and Moonshine, and I look forward to seeing how the series develops.

Murder and Moonshine
By K. Branfield
Carol Miller serves up a big dose of Southern hospitality in her debut novel, Murder and Moonshine. This murder mystery is quite puzzling but it is the delightfully appealing cast of quirky characters that kept me glued to the pages of this compelling story.

Daisy McGovern has her hands full with her ill mother and gun-toting honorary Aunt Emily when local recluse Fred Dickerson unexpectedly passes away in the diner where she is a waitress. This spunky independent young woman is struggling financially in the wake of her husband’s disappearance and the unfair seizure of the family farm by the ATF. So she is not all happy when ATF agent Ethan Kinney shows up to investigate Fred’s death. Deciding there is some truth to the old adage “keep your friends close and enemies closer”, Daisy reluctantly joins forces with Ethan to uncover the truth behind Fred’s demise. A second death hits close to home and puts Daisy in danger as she and Ethan close in on the killer.

A series of misdirects and lack of clear motive keep the plot of Murder and Moonshine moving at a brisk pace as Daisy and Ethan investigate Fred’s death. Inside information about the intricacies of the moonshining business provides valuable insight into how Fred was murdered but they are left wondering why anyone would kill the elderly man. The pair are equally mystified by the sudden interest in who owns Daisy’s old family homestead. But it is Daisy’s preoccupation with new owner’s identity that obscures a vital clue and puts Daisy, her mom and Ethan in harm’s way.

Murder and Moonshine has an interesting and well-developed storyline that is full of twists and turns. The eclectic cast of characters is three-dimensional and quite entertaining. Carol Miller perfectly captures all of the complicated nuances of Southern living and she brings the small town vividly to life. While most of the novel’s mysteries are solved, I am desperately hoping the next installment will answer the question of what happened to Daisy’s husband!

I received a complimentary copy for review.
