Boys and girls will flock to Warren, a quirky chicken who wants to find his inner greatness.

Warren, a bespectacled chicken, is bored with the everyday chicken routine: peck, cluck, feed; peck, cluck, feed. Same old, same old. There must be more to life, no? And there must be more to Warren. He leaves the farm to discover what makes him special—and with the help of an unhatched egg and a snarky, hungry rat, he just might get some answers.

Filled with simple text, speech balloons, and engaging illustrations, this easy-to-follow story is a blend between a picture book and a chapter book, making it an ideal bridge for independent readers.

    From Booklist
Bespectacled Warren is bored by his fellow chicks, who only peck chick feed and peep. He strikes out looking for adventure to prove how extraordinary he really is, and in the course of six chapters, he finds a conniving rat, an egg he adopts as his superhero sidekick, and definitive proof that he is no ordinary chicken at all. Dillard allows her clever tale to unfold in both sentences and cartoon panels. This combined approach amplifies Warren’s wry observations of his surroundings and peers, such as the egg, the rat, a duck, and a hungry fox. The brightly hued illustrations depict a wide variety of emotion and clever props, like the fox’s suspicious chicken cookbook and the duck’s coaching whistle, which looks remarkably like his own hat. There’s even a bilingual pun, along with a handful of silly food jokes. The simple text, usually only appearing in one or two sentences, is easy enough for beginning readers. Warren has all the imagination of Rebecca Purcell’s Super Chicken! (2013) but with some added sly sophistication, too. Grades 2-4. --Francisca Goldsmith

    Review
Warren, the self-important chicken of the title, doesn’t realize that Millard the rat is flattering him because he’s considering eating Warren for dinner. “I think I might be a special chicken!” Warren confides. Millard gushes right back: “It is possible you could even be... Chicken Supreme!” Fortunately, Warren spots Millard’s cookbook, 1001 Recipes for Chicken, and when he discovers that Millard has plans for the rest of the flock, he gets to be the superhero he’s always dreamed of being. Dillard (Perfectly Arugula) has a solid grasp of the possibilities of sequential art, drawing panels that break up physical processes like learning to fly (where Warren runs into some trouble) and following Warren as he trudges over a hill, ruminating about his failure to warn the flock. Warren’s sidekick, an egg who eventually hatches, is the story’s sweetest surprise: “Is this farm the whole world or is there more?” the chick asks. “Did you know that I’d be so yellow and fuzzy?” A good-humored story that nicely blends picture book, chapter book, and graphic novel elements. Ages 6–9. Agent: Lori Nowicki, Painted Words. (Feb.) (Publishers Weekly)

This is a story that keeps interrupting itself.

A few pages into the comic, the narration is drowned out by sound effects. A flock of chicks keeps squawking for two pages straight. It happens right in the middle of a sentence: “They pecked all day long. EVERY SINGLE DAY. It drove Warren…Peep! Peck! Peck! Peck! / CRAZY.” (Eight nearly identical panels labeled Sunday through Sunday show four chicks peeping and pecking, as Warren looks on with increasing exasperation.) This is, presumably, supposed to be an amusing, postmodern device, but mostly it’s just an annoyance. In fairness, it’s supposed to be annoying. Warren hates the daily routine on the farm. He says, “I’ve had enough pecking and peeping….I am MORE than just an ORDINARY CHICKEN.” Warren becomes a sort of poultry superhero, rescuing the others from Millard the rat, who has invited them all to a barbecue. Large sections of the plot may feel familiar. The book feels much like the film Chicken Run, for example. But the story isn’t the point. The point is the jokes, which are terrible and brilliant in equal measure. When Warren bumps into an egg, he says, “OEUF!”

The simple line drawings are charming. The text is a matter of taste. It will be a hit with fans of borscht-belt humor. Everyone else may be driven…CRAZY. (Graphic fiction. 6-9) (Kirkus)

Life on the farm stifles Warren, who tires of all the repetitive pecking day after day and declares himself “more than just an ordinary chicken!” His dreams are aided and abetted by sinister Millard the rat, who’s licking his chops as he dubs Warren “Chicken Supreme.” When Warren realizes that Millard’s celebratory chicken barbecue is going to feature the coop members as entrees rather than guests, Warren tries to warn them and heroically—and accidentally—saves the day. Dillard has a light hand in this easy reader, touching with gentle absurdity on the desire to be extraordinary and adding in some amusing details (Warren, for instance, befriends an egg). Unfortunately, the plot meanders off into strange directions (chicken flying lessons suddenly appear) and loses momentum, and the dénouement involves too many devices and not enough punch. The digital illustrations have a tidy perkiness, with trim lines and simple backgrounds; with its frequent panel sequences and speech bubbles, the layout resembles an airy graphic novel. The easygoing layout and friendly charm of the dialogue may still appeal to early readers, who may appreciate the hint that subsequent adventures are to come. DS

    A Great Read!
    By Wendy A. Durocher
A one night fun read for a skilled second grader or average third grader. Also, a good read for advanced first graders.
Warren is one lovable chicken who can't help but want to stand out from the rest of the chickens in yard. He is so eager to be special that it takes a while for him to realize the true intent of the rat. Warren isn't so easily fooled by a Fox who comes along at the end of the story. Written in a graphic novel style and with chapters, the book is sure to make young readers feel big. A great book for tracking text, using expression and making inferences. Also a great example of a character changing. Enjoy this fun book in the classroom or at home. My son closed the book and said, is there a second book about Warren?

    Love Warren!
    By L. K. Messner
I still remember when my daughter and I read our first graphic novel in Jennifer and Matthew Holmes’ BABYMOUSE series six or seven years ago. We read all of them together, passed them back and forth, and laughed like crazy. There are just a handful of other graphic novels for this age group that share that kind of specialness (Jarrett Krosoczka’s LUNCH LADY series among them) so I was thrilled to see a charming newcomer – Sarah Dillard’s spunky EXTRAORDINARY WARREN: A SUPER CHICKEN.

I’d seen some of Sarah’s early art for this book at a retreat we both attended a while back, so when she asked if I’d like to review the final version, I jumped at the chance, and I’m so glad that I did.

Warren is a chicken who’s tired of the same old clucking and scratching and pecking. But none of the other chickens understand why. (As a kid who grew up in a small town, boy could I relate to this!). So he sets off to find something more, and like so many of us small-town kids with big dreams, finds himself in a bit of danger, even though he doesn’t realize right away that the hungry, double-speaking rat he meets intends to have chicken for dinner. (“Chicken SUPREME!” Warren says proudly.) The young chicken also finds a mysterious egg, too, and along the way discovers that he really is an extraordinary friend.

I love the way this book balances the playful art of a picture book with the character development and story arc of a chapter book. Its bright illustrations blended with just the right amount of text will have great appeal for kids who still love picture books but also want to start tackling chapters. Hand it to your BABYMOUSE and LUNCH LADY fans who need another great character to love.

“Kovach and Rosenstiel’s essays on each [element] are concise gems, filled with insights worthy of becoming axiomatic. . . . The book should become essential reading for journalism professionals and students and for the citizens they aim to serve.” —Carl Sessions Stepp, American Journalism Review

“If you think journalists have no idea what you want . . . here is a book that agrees with you. Better—it has solutions. The Elements of Journalism is written for journalists, but any citizen who wonders why the news seems trivial or uninspiring should read it.” —Marta Salij, Detroit Free Press

    The elements of journalism are:
    * Journalism’s first obligation is to the truth.
    * Its first loyalty is to citizens.
    * Its essence is a discipline of verification.
    * Its practitioners must maintain an independence from those they cover.
    * It must serve as an independent monitor of power.
    * It must provide a forum for public criticism and compromise.
    * It must strive to make the significant interesting and relevant.
    * It must keep the news comprehensive and proportional.
    * Its practitioners must be allowed to exercise their personal conscience.

    Review
"At a time when technological and financial forces are creating formidable challenges to journalism's traditional values, Kovach and Rosenstiel have written an immensely valuable primer on who we are, what we do, and how we should do it."
    -- David Halberstam

"The Elements of Journalism is a remarkable book that does a superb job of describing the problems, articulating the values, outlining the risks, and offering understandable and practical ways to respond to the difficulties of the present state of journalism. The Elements of Journalism ought to become required reading for every institution (and individual) engaged in journalism."
    — Neil Rudenstine, President, Harvard University

"Of the many books that have been written about reporting the news, this one best captures the shortcomings, subtleties, and possibilities of modern journalism. It deserves to become as indispensable to journalists and journalism students as The Elements of Style."
    — Tom Goldstein, Dean, Graduate School of Journalism, Columbia University

"In an age when partisan rancor and ratings-driven showmanship have crowded out the more subtle virtues of solid journalism, Tom Rosenstiel and Bill Kovach provide a timely refresher course in the importance of press fundamentals. They remind us that at its best, journalism is a high public calling, and all those who practice it have a deeper obligation to their readers and viewers than to the demands of the market."
    — David Talbot, editor-in-chief, Salon.com

    What Is Journalism For?

On a gray December morning in 1981, Anna Semborska woke up and flipped on the radio to hear her favorite program, Sixty Minutes Per Hour. Semborska, who was seventeen, loved the way the comedy revue pushed the boundaries of what people in Poland could say out loud. Though it had been on the air for some years, with the rise of the labor union Solidarity, 60MPH had become much more bold. Sketches like one about a dim-witted Communist doctor looking vainly to find a cure for extremism were an inspiration to Anna and her teenage friends in Warsaw. The program showed her that other people felt about the world the way she did, but had never dared express. "We felt that if things like these can be said on the radio then we are free," she would remember nearly twenty years later. (1)

But when Anna ran to the radio to tune in the show on December 13, 1981, she heard only static. She tried another station, then another. Nothing. She tried to call a friend and found no dial tone. Her mother called her to the window. Tanks were rolling by. The Polish military government had declared martial law, outlawed Solidarity, and put the clamps back on the media and on speech. The Polish experiment with liberalization was over.

Within hours, Anna and her friends began to hear stories that suggested something this time was different. In a little town called 'Swidnik near the Czech border, there were the dogwalkers. Every night at 7:30, when the state-run television news came on, nearly everyone in 'Swidnik went out and walked his dog in a little park in the center of town.

It became a daily silent act of protest and solidarity. We refuse to watch. We reject your version of truth.

In Gdansk, there were the black TV screens. People there began moving their television sets to the windows-with the screens pointed out to the street. They were sending a sign to one another, and the government. We, too, refuse to watch. We also reject your version of truth.

An underground press began to grow, on ancient hand-crank equipment. People began carrying video cameras and making private documentaries, which they showed secretly in church basements. Soon, Poland's leaders acknowledged they were facing a new phenomenon, something they had to go west to name. It was the rise of Polish public opinion. In 1983, the government created the first of several institutes to study it. It mostly conducted public opinion surveys. Others would sprout up throughout Eastern Europe as well. This new phenomenon was something totalitarian officials could not dictate. At best, they could try to understand it and then manipulate it, not unlike Western democratic politicians. They would not succeed.

Afterward, leaders of the movement toward freedom would look back and think the end of Communism owed a good deal to the coming of new information technology and the effect it had on human souls. In the winter of 1989, the man who shortly would be elected Poland's new president visited with journalists in Washington. "Is it possible for a new Stalin to appear today who could murder people?" Lech Walesa asked rhetorically. No, he answered himself. In the age of computers, satellites, faxes, VCRs, "it's impossible." Technology now made information available to too many people, too quickly. And information created democracy. (2)

    What is journalism for?

For the Poles and others in emerging democracies the question was answered with action. Journalism was for building community. Journalism was for citizenship. Journalism was for democracy. Millions of people, empowered by a free flow of information, became directly involved in creating a new government and new rules for the political, social, and economic life of their country. Is that always journalism's purpose? Or was that true for one moment, in one place?

In the United States for the last half century or so the question "What is journalism for?" has rarely been asked, by citizens or journalists. You owned a printing press or a broadcasting license and you produced journalism. In the United States journalism has been reduced to a simple tautology: It was whatever journalists said it was. As Maxwell King, the former editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer, has said, "We let our work speak for itself." Or, when pressed, journalists take it as a given that they work in the public interest. (3)

This simplistic answer is no longer sufficient — if it ever really was to an increasingly skeptical public. Not now that the new communications technology with which anyone with a modem and a computer can claim to be "doing journalism." Not now that the technology has created a new economic organization of journalism in which the norms of journalism are being pulled and redefined, and sometimes abandoned.

Perhaps, some suggest, the definition of journalism has been exploded by technology, so now anything is seen as journalism.

But on closer examination, as the people of Poland demonstrated, the purpose of journalism is not defined by technology, or by journalists or the techniques they employ. As we will show, the principles and purpose of journalism are defined by something more basic — the function news plays in the lives of people.

For all that the face of journalism has changed, indeed, its purpose has remained remarkably constant, if not always well served, since the notion of "a press" first evolved more than three hundred years ago. And for all that the speed, techniques, and character of news delivery have changed, there already exists a clear theory and philosophy of journalism that flows out of the function of news.

The primary purpose of journalism is to provide citizens with the information they need to be free and self-governing.

As we listened to citizens and journalists, we heard that this obligation to citizens encompasses several elements. The news media help us define our communities, and help us create a common language and common knowledge rooted in reality. Journalism also helps identify a community's goals, heroes, and villains. "I've felt strongly for a long time that we proceed best as a society if we have a common base of information," NBC anchorman Tom Brokaw told our academic research partners. (4) The news media serve as a watchdog, push people beyond complacency, and offer a voice to the forgotten. "I want to give voices to people who need the voice . . . people who are powerless," said Yuen Tying Chan, a former reporter for the New York Daily News who has created a journalism training program in Hong Kong.5 James Carey, one of the founders of our committee, has put it this way in his own writing: Perhaps in the end journalism simply means carrying on and amplifying the conversation of people themselves. (6)

This definition has held so consistent through history, and proven so deeply ingrained in the thinking of those who produce news through the ages, that it is in little doubt. It is difficult, in looking back, even to separate the concept of journalism from the concept of creating community and later democracy. Journalism is so fundamental to that purpose that, as we will see, societies that want to suppress freedom must first suppress the press. They do not, interestingly, have to suppress capitalism. At its best, as we will also show, journalism reflects a subtle understanding of how citizens behave, an understanding that we call the Theory of the Interlocking Public.

Yet the longstanding theory and purpose of journalism are being challenged today in ways not seen before, at least in the United States. Technology is shaping a new economic organization of information companies, which is subsuming journalism inside it. The threat is no longer simply from government censorship. The new danger is that independent journalism may be dissolved in the solvent of commercial communication and synergistic self-promotion. The real meaning of the First Amendment — that a free press is an independent institution — is threatened for the first time in our history even without government meddling.

There are some who will contend that defining journalism is dangerous. To define journalism, they argue, is to limit it. Maybe doing so violates the spirit of the First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law . . . abridging the freedom of speech or of the press." This is why journalists have avoided licensing, like doctors and lawyers, they note. They also worry that defining journalism will only make it resistant to changing with the times, which probably will run it out of business.

Actually, the resistance to definition in journalism is not a deeply held principle but a fairly recent and largely commercial impulse. Publishers a century ago routinely championed their news values in front-page editorials, opinion pages, and company slogans, and just as often publicly assailed the journalistic values of their rivals. This was marketing. Citizens chose which publications to read based on their style and their approach to news. It was only as the press began to assume a more corporate and monopolistic form that it became more reticent. Lawyers also advised news companies against codifying their principles in writing for fear that they would be used against them in court. Avoiding definition was a commercial strategy. It was not born of the meaning of the First Amendment.

On the other side, some will argue that not only should journalism's purpose be unchanging, but its form should be constant as well. They see changes in the way journalism looks from when they were young, and fear that, in the memorable phrase of Neil Postman, we are "amusing ourselves to death." They miss another fact. Every generation creates its own journalism.

But the purpose, we have found, is the same.

Though journalists are uncomfortable defining what they do, they do fundamentally agree on their purpose. When we set out in 1997 to chart the common ground of newspeople, this was the first answer we heard: "The central purpose of journalism is to tell the truth so that people will have the information that they need to be sovereign." It came from Jack Fuller, an author, novelist, lawyer, and president of the Tribune Publishing Company, which produces the Chicago Tribune. (7)

Even people who resist the label of journalist, who work on the Web, offer a similar goal. Omar Wasow, a self-described "garage entrepreneur" who founded a website called New York Online, told us at one committee forum that his aim, in part, was helping to create citizens who are "consumers, devourers and debunkers of media . . . an audience who have engaged with the product and can respond carefully." (8)

Were these just disparate voices? Not really. In collaboration with the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press, we asked journalists what they considered the distinguishing feature of journalism. Those working in news volunteered this democratic function by nearly two to one over any other answer. (9) Open-ended in-depth interviews with a hundred more journalists conducted by developmental psychologists at Stanford, Harvard, and the University of Chicago with whom we collaborated came to the same conclusion. "News professionals at every level . . . express an adamant allegiance to a set of core standards that are striking in their commonality and in their linkage to the public information mission," they write. (10)

Ethics codes and journalism mission statements bear the same witness. The goal is "to serve the general welfare by informing the people," says the code of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, the largest association of print newsroom managers in North America. "Give light and the people will find their own way," reads the masthead of Scripps Company newspapers. Indeed, every newspaper mission statement on file with the American Society of Newspaper Editors names advancing self-government as the primary goal of the news organization. (11)

Those outside journalism, too, understand a broader social and moral obligation for journalism. Listen to Pope John Paul II in June 2000: "With its vast and direct influence on public opinion, journalism cannot be guided only by economic forces, profit, and special interest. It must instead be felt as a mission in a certain sense sacred, carried out in the knowledge that the powerful means of communication have been entrusted to you for the good of all." (12)

This democratic mission is not just a modern idea. The concept of creating sovereignty has run through every major statement and argument about the press for centuries, not only from journalists but from the revolutionaries who fought for democratic principles, both in America and in virtually every developing democracy since.

For some great class discussions, pair it with these books
    By CoMan1993
This is essential reading for journalism students, but for some really interesting discussions, I recommend pairing it with Campbell, LeDuff, Jenkins, & Brown's Race and News: Critical Perspectives. That book offers a number of contemporary case studies that highlight the inherent conflicts that emerge in Kovach and Rosensteil's "elements." Also, see Gonzalez & Torres' News for all the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media on how structural racism has distorted the information we've received from our news media over the years.Race and News: Critical PerspectivesNews for All the People: The Epic Story of Race and the American Media

    Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, June 2011: “In spite of the manners he often forgot, he would not say, “I’m sorry.” Oh no, he would not.” With these memorable words we get to know Tumford, a well-meaning but stubborn kitty, who has a habit of hiding when his mischievous ways call for an apology. Tumford’s owners' love for him never wavers, and after an incident with the Queen of the Fair he finds the courage to say, “I’m sorry.” In true Tillman style, Tumford the Terrible is beautifully illustrated and reassuring for little ones, reminding them that “love isn’t measured in muddy galoshes, broken tea dishes, or trampled on squashes.” --Seira Wilson

    Tillman Continues to Shine
    By Mary Kate
I've been a fan of Nancy Tillman since I came across On the Night You Were Born while browsing at my local bookstore. Its celebration of the uniqueness of every child, told in lovely language, has made it the gift I choose most often for expectant or adoptive parents. I also share it regularly with my own grandchildren and talk with them about how special they are. Tillman feels that the most important message for children to receive is simply, "You are loved." That message is core to my other favorite from Tillman's published works, Wherever You Are: My Love Will Find You. It its pages, children are assured that, no matter how far from home they go or what they do, they will be loved.

In Tumford the Terrible, Tillman goes in a slightly different direction. The message of unconditional love remains, but the story is more humorous, focusing on Tumford Stoutt, the beloved cat of Georgy and Violet Stoutt. Tumford seems to possess a certain carelessness - or perhaps he simply jumps into situations without considering the consequences. Either way, a trail of muddy footprints, broken dishes and spilled paint are likely to follow in his wake. The mishaps can't shake Georgy and Violet's love for their cat (because "love isn't measured in muddy galoshes or broken tea dishes or trampled-on squashes. No, love is a thing that just happens, you see... like the way I love you and the way you love me"). But the Stoutts are saddened by Tummy's inability to apologize when his actions cause destruction of one sort or another. Tummy would rather hide than say he's sorry - that most difficult word. The Stoutts hope that a special treat, offered on the condition that Tummy promises to apologize should the need arise, may get him past his inability to face the music. Tummy gives his promise, but will he keep it?

Tumford the Terrible is a sweet story told in rhyming verse that many young children may identify with. (My guess is that there are plenty of adults that will identify with Tumford as well.) :-) Apologizing can be difficult and there are many people who try to avoid it when possible. But learning to accept responsibility for one's actions or to tell someone you've wronged that you regret your actions is an important lesson. In Tumford the Terrible, Tillman remembers to assure readers that love remains, even when behavior is less than perfect. And making certain that children understand that as well is even more important.

As always, Tillman's lovely artwork is as appealing as her words, making the book a visual pleasure for children and adults. My favorite pieces in Tumford the Terrible are those showing the large black and white cat hiding among teddy bears on a bedroom shelf and strutting to town in his yellow boots.

Nancy Tillman continues to create books that I absolutely love having in my collection. Sharing them with my grandchildren and enjoying them on my own is sheer joy.

    Very highly recommended.

When Forgiveness Doesn't Make Sense, by Robert Jeffress

Forgiveness Is Always Difficult and Often Illogical. But It's the Only Remedy God Offers to  Heal Our Hearts.
With the experience of more than two decades in the ministry, Dr. Robert Jeffress has come to the conclusion that forgiveness is the bottom-line issue of life. Failure to receive God's forgiveness results in eternal hell; failure to grant forgiveness to those who have hurt us results in a living hell.
While most people - especially Christians - esteem the concept of forgiveness in theory, few have mastered what one person has called "the art of forgiveness." As C.S. Lewis once said, "Forgiveness is a beautiful word, until you have something to forgive."
When Forgiveness Doesn't Make Sense is an intensely biblical yet extremely practical approach to this crucial issue.

Dr. Jeffress deals with the major misunderstandings about forgiveness: believing you cannot forgive those who never ask for it, confusing forgiveness with forgetting or with reconciliation, and believing that forgiveness automatically erases the consequences of harmful actions. Dr. Jeffress explains the process of our forgiveness by God, as well as the power of our forgiveness of others.
Readers will also learn questions to ask themselves before they seek forgiveness from another, essentials of an effective apology, reasons others may refuse to forgive them, action steps for dealing with painful memories, a check-list to determine whether they have genuinely forgiven another, and much more.
Forgiveness is difficult and often illogical. But When Forgiveness Doesn't Make Sense will equip and encourage readers to become more forgiving-and to experience God's forgiveness more deeply.
At some time in our lives we will be hurt deeply by another person. It may be a family member who mistreats us, a business associate who cheats us, a child who rebels against us, a friend who betrays us, a mate who deserts us, or a God who disappoints us. While we can't control the hurts that come into our lives, we can choose what to do with those hurts. We can let them make us bitter, or we can release them through forgiveness. While forgiveness doesn't always seem to make sense, as Dr. Robert Jeffress explains in his important new book, it is the only way God has given us to effectively resolve the pain of our past. More importantly, it's the obligation of every Christian.

    From Publishers Weekly
Jeffress, pastor of a Baptist megachurch in Wichita Falls, Tex., approaches the familiar subject of forgiveness from a new angle. He stresses that the reason "many people find it difficult to forgive is that they don't understand what true forgiveness is and what it isn't." Jeffress notes that sin is ultimately an offense against God, and that it is hard for those who haven't experienced forgiveness to grant forgiveness to others. He compares God's forgiveness to people's forgiveness of others and gives detailed steps for the reader to know when and how to both seek and grant forgiveness. Forgiveness, according to Jeffress, is more for the victim than the offender, to prevent the festering of bitterness in the heart of the person wronged. Jeffress explores various possible responses from all parties involved, discussing forgiveness as it is related to forgetting (it is not the same as forgetting, he emphasizes), consequences, repentance and reconciliation. This engaging, accessible book is written in an easy style and supplemented with numerous anecdotes. Jeffress has taken what some would deem a touchy topic and made it palatable, offering a concrete process for extending--and receiving--forgiveness. (Apr.)

    Review
"Like the skilled surgeon of the Scriptures that he is, Robert Jeffress lays bare the cancerous tumor of unforgiveness and walks his reader through the confusing and sometimes thorny path to peace."
-Howard G. Hendricks, Distinguished professor and chairman, Center for Christian Leadership, Dallas Theological Seminary

"Anger, hurt feelings, and even betrayal can emotionally and spiritually tie us in knots. Robert Jeffress shows us biblically and practically how to 'untie the knots.' If you've struggled with forgiving others, or even God, this is your book."
-John Trent, PhD, author and speaker; President, Encouraging Words and StrongFamilies.com

"Dr. Jeffress makes sense out of giving forgiveness when it sometimes seems so senseless. With each page of this book, he opens the door to healing and grace."
-Lew Parrott III, PhD, Seattle Pacific University; Author of The Control Freak

    From the Inside Flap
WHY DO WE HAVE DIFFICULTY ACCEPTING GOD'S UNCONDITIONAL FORGIVENESS?
AND WHY DO WE FIND IT SO IMPOSSIBLE TO GRANT THAT SAME FORGIVENESS TO OTHERS?

The bottom-line issue of life is forgiveness—that's the conclusion of Dr. Robert Jeffress after more than two decades in Christian ministry, and most of us would agree. Yet few of us have mastered the art of implementing forgiveness in our daily lives.

Combining rich, biblical insights with practical, real-life situations, When Forgiveness Doesn't Make Sense effectively answers your burning questions regarding this critical issue, giving you not only the "why's," but also the elusive "how's" of choosing to forgive.

    Pain Relief Made Possible
    By David Sinclair, Ph.D.
My office is just a stone's throw from Columbine High, where my daughter will be a cheerleader next year. We've had a lot of pain in our community. I've read lots of books and we've had lots of advice on how to forgive. This book provides solid answers to the questions that we've all been asking. It really stands out from the pack. It's not full of psychological pap. (We've had our fill of that, quite frankly). Jeffress' has an uncanny ability to apply the Bible's ancient wisdom to modern realities. Even before Columbine, like most of us, I had felt the pain of betrayal--and struggled with how to get over it. This book showed me how to rise above it. I recommend it as very accessible, knowing counsel for those struggling with hurt of any kind. It is a balanced, realistic look at what the Bible teaches on the most relevant subject imaginable. The chapter on "Forgiving God" is worth the price of the book all by itself. That's a concept I have found no where else. Get this book for someone you love who is hurting (maybe you!). You'll be glad you did. I checked Jeffress' other books, too, and he seems to have a real gift for motivating his readers on the path of successful living that pleases God.

    Book Review
By Brian Eby, LPC, LMFT, NCC, SWA,DABFC
I found this book to be incredibly helpful in addressing the forgiveness issue. As a professional counselor, I believe that forgiveness is the central issue for healing and productive living. Jeffress addresses forgiveness in a biblical and straightforward manner. This book is unique in that Jeffress raises the question that all honest strugglers face, "Where is God and does He care?" Jeffress also reveals his pastors heart by providing real life illustrations in a clear, easy to read manner. This book will challenge your presuppositions about forgiveness and strenghthen your faith in God. This is a must read for everyone, especially pastors, counselors, and people-helpers.

    The basis for healthy relationships
    By Randy
I have read several books about forgiveness. This book is the best I have ever read. Author Jeffress walks you through all the reasons why you shouldn't forgive (what YOU think) and then makes it clear that what YOU think is wrong. I have loaned several of these books to people that are going through divorce. I never get them back!!!!

If you are struggling with anger, bitterness, and resentment you are suffering the affects of unforgiveness. Until you make the decision to forgive and free yourself from the control of others you will not have great relationships.

A must read for those that counsel others toward forgiveness.

    Jinx's Magic, by Sage Blackwood

Jinx's Magic is the second book in Sage Blackwood's highly acclaimed fantasy-adventure series, Jinx. This humorous and smart tween trilogy set in a magical forest is perfect for fans of Angie Sage's Septimus Heap, Michael Buckley's the Sisters Grimm, and Brandon Mull's Fablehaven.

"Readers will thrill to journey with Jinx" (Jinx, School Library Journal, starred review), a daring young wizard's apprentice, as he travels from his home in the Urwald to an unfamiliar desert land in search of ancient magic. He needs that magic badly—there are forces threatening the Urwald from all sides.

The more he learns, however, the clearer it becomes that this quest will require more than the magic of a solitary wizard's apprentice, and soon he'll have to call upon all of the Urwald—witches, werewolves, wizards, and trees—for help.

Gr 4-8-The middle book of a trilogy must be the hardest to write: the thrill of the first book's creation of setting and characters is over and the satisfaction of tying every loose end together is yet to come. In this sequel to Jinx (HarperCollins, 2013), Blackwood succeeds in keeping readers' interests piqued without completely frustrating them. Jinx travels beyond the borders of his beloved Urwald and learns that it must be saved from the greedy depredations of invading foreigners from Keyland. He insinuates himself into the school at the Temple in Samara so he can explore the history of magic. As Blackwood extends Jinx's experiences to other lands, she adds layers of complexity that hint at future developments. Jinx's magical powers are strengthening, but he doesn't fully understand their source or their extent. He's still finding out how to use his gifts. The result of these uncertainties is that readers are left feeling as unsettled and unbalanced as he is. The next installment can't come along soon enough.-Miriam Lang Budin, Chappaqua Library, NYα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journal. LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. *Starred Review* Blackwood’s now nearly 13-year-old wizard apprentice demonstrates both the pluck and smarts to cope with a series of misadventures as he sets about to save Simon, his master, from the evil Bonemaster. To locate an important and powerful book of lost magic wisdom and rescue Simon’s missing wife, who has the power to save him, Jinx treks through the magical woodlands, studded with trolls, werewolves, and other menacing creatures, to enroll as a would-be scholar in the hostile country of Samara. Meanwhile, land-grabbing Keyland lumberjacks threaten the trees of the Urwald, who Jinx alone can hear, and his allegiances with his friends Reven and Elfwyn are tested when they are at odds with the desires of the Urwald. Blackwood’s invented languages are seamlessly believable, and the compelling moral questions facing Jinx—how far is he willing to go to rescue the people important to him?—will snag readers.Unlike many second volumes in fantasy series, this one delivers all the grace and spark of Jinx (2013) while still allowing the characters to gain depth and complexity and expanding on the already richly dynamic world. This series deserves a permanent place in the children’s fantasy pantheon, with Narnia and Earthsea. Grades 4-8. --Francisca Goldsmith

    Marvelous second act
    By Emmet
The only thing better than the world Blackwood has created is the characters who live in it. And they do live there; you feel as though if you could only get to the Urwald you'd find them somewhere on The Path. This installment introduces some great new ones (the scholarly werewolf and the pedantic witch are unforgettable), and follows Jinx, Elfwyn and Reven as they take very different paths. Like JINX, JINX'S MAGIC is laugh-out-loud funny at some points, unputdownably exciting at others, and moving at times, particularly a devastating scene of clear cutting at the perilous border between the Urwald and Reven's land, and Jinx's reaction to it.

I think middle-grade readers will particularly appreciate Jinx's frustration at being repeatedly underestimated due to his age and size; his growing understanding of Simon and Sophie's ( i.e. adult) relationship; and his realization that allies don't always share your values.

    Solid and Rich Fantasy
    By Talvi
Jinx's Magic is a solid, well written, intelligent sequel, smoothly continuing the story from the eponymous first book. Sage Blackwood's strength as a storyteller is her ability to weave very realistic and complex character studies but put them in a wholly realized magical world.

In this volume 2 of Jinx's story, the boy is now 13 and helping Reven and Elfywyn (the prince in hiding and the girl who cannot lie) out of the Urwald and back to Reven's country to regain his throne. But the trees are unhappy, civilization is consistently removing the forest, and Simon's spell on the Bonemaster may not hold. Simon and Jinx must separate to different goals as Jinx must learn more about ancient languages, Listeners, and how to control the power of the Urwald as a scholar in Samara. Along the way, he will deal with talking werewolves, magicians, puppy love, confusing messages, and new friends.

Through the course of the book, you really start to feel for Jinx. His loneliness, desire to make sense of his world, and deal with so many personalities (each with their own motivations) are palpable and well written. From the confusing talk of the trees to the frustrating condescension from the adults. He's not perfect, isn't really a hero character, but just tries to do the best he can with the cards he's dealt and his current sensibilities. That grounded nature is what keeps it interesting.

For me, the best part of book really has to be the pithy commentary and snappy dialogue. This is an extremely well written story, with subtleties and clues really rewarding the aware reader. Jinx is never too smart for his age but also his practical nature grounds him into being so much smarter than many of the adults around him.

In all, I'm very much enjoying this series. Received as an ARC from the publisher.

Well done middle grade fantasy novel!
    By Karissa Eckert
I got a copy of this book to review through Edelweiss. This was even better than the first book in this series. It’s a well done middle grade fantasy novel and I enjoyed it. There will be a third book in this series.

Jinx knows he can do magic but he doesn’t know why. Jinx is being followed by a werewolf with a notebook and the trees keep telling him that he is a Listener and needs to learn how to be a Listener to save the Urwald. When Simon goes to confront the Bonemaster and doesn’t come back Jinx is forced to journey into Samara to find the answers he seeks. Jinx wants to save the Urwald, he just doesn't know how and he can’t figure out what the Bonemaster and the mysterious elves have to do with everything.

I enjoyed Jinx a lot more as a character in this book than the first. In the beginning he is given the responsibility of getting Reven and Elfywyn (the prince in hiding and the girl who cannot lie) out of the Urwald. On this journey Jinx is also trying to deal with the angry trees that want Reven gone. Jinx is trying to take on all of this responsibility and understand what the trees, Simon, Reven, and Elfywyn are all asking of him. I really felt for him at times...he has a lot to deal with and no one is being very helpful. Jinx isn’t a hero, but he’s practical and fairly smart and I enjoyed that.

Jinx ends up spending some time at a school in Samara (where magic is forbidden and he is supposed to learn KnIP). KnIP means “knowledge is power” and if you know something is there it is...it’s a kind of magic all it’s own. I enjoyed it, there is a lot of humor here and it’s fun to watch Jinx master KnIP as well as the power of the Urwald. I also enjoyed the new characters added in from the school in Samara; they were well done and entertaining.

There is a lot of adventure, a bit of intrigue, and some humor in here. It all amounts to a well done story. The story is complex enough to make you think, but not confusing. It’s just a perfect level for middle grade readers (and I think older readers and adults who love fantasy will enjoy it too).

Overall I really enjoyed the story and can’t wait to see how things wrap up in the third and final book. This book is fast-paced, has some fun characters, adventure and magic. It’s a fun fantasy read that I think adults and kids both will enjoy. Recommended to fans of fantasy and magic.

The Stewart Earls of Orkney, by Peter Anderson

For almost a century the islands of Orkney and Shetland were under the rule of the Stewart earls, father and son, a rule remarkable for its infamous reputation in island history. Robert Stewart was an illegitimate son of James V, king of Scots, who seized power in Orkney in the 1560s and was created earl of Shetland in 1581. Robert's son was the extraordinary and ill-starred Earl Patrick, 'Black Patie', whose execution for treason in 1615 brought the era to a close. This book has its foundations in two previous books by Peter Anderson, one on each character.
