Totally Wicked Awesome!!!!!!!
By Lacey Chapman
Very well written & exciting for adults & kids! If you loved the Magic Tree House Series you will definitely enjoy these (too bad they are only two books in the series currently!)! Full of action and way more action (differet not repetitive (they all start out way differently; not the same) in my opinion) than the Magic Tree House Series! These are way worth the $7 per book............I was hesitant at first; that seemed kind of pricy..............for some book I hadn't heard anything about (if h know what I mean because there was only a few/or no reviews on it! I can't remember! Lol) I would definatly recommend this serries! ;D For adults & kids alike! You will be hooked before you finish the first paragraph!!!!!!!! A must read for all ages!!!!!!!!!!!!

Greek Mythology

Greece Is the Word
Every day we forget stories. I saw a funny video about a cat on the Internet this morning, but when I tried to tell a friend about it, I suddenly had no idea how it ended. A list of best-selling books from ten years ago would have authors on it that I don’t even remember. The thing you have to realize about Greek myths is that these are stories so good that we’ve managed to remember them for more than three thousand years.

Three thousand years! When these stories were first told around a banquet table or a campfire, paper hadn’t even been invented yet to write them down on. The entire world probably had only forty million people in it—roughly the population of the state of California today. Two of those people were your great-great-great-great- . . . great-grandparents.

Today kids still love Greek myths, but they aren’t just fairy tales for children—they’ve become woven into our everyday life. Have you ever heard anyone say that someone has “the Midas touch” or “an Achilles’ heel”? If references like that are all Greek to you, don’t worry. It just means that today you’re going to hear some great stories for the very first time.
Best of the West
Greek mythology is still important today because so much of Western civilization was born in ancient Greece. Here’s a list of some of the things we still use today that the Greeks invented. (Note that some of these inventions cropped up elsewhere—India, China, the Middle East—around the same time.)

• DEMOCRACY

• AN ALPHABET with both consonants and vowels (our word “alphabet” even comes from the first two Greek letters, alpha and beta)

• LOGIC

• COMEDY AND DRAMA

• GEOMETRY

• WIND POWER

Not too shabby for a handful of small city-states founded by sheepherders! The Greeks even invented pizza . . . sort of. One of their favorite snacks was an ancestor of pizza called plakous: a delicious flatbread sprinkled with herbs, onion, and garlic. (Canadian bacon and pineapple hadn’t been invented yet.)

Hero Worship

The greatest Greek inventor was Hero of Alexandria, sometimes called Heron. Around AD 40 he invented the world’s first steam engine—but, not realizing the machine’s potential, only used it as a toy. For Greek temples, Hero invented the world’s first automatically opening doors and even a vending machine! (By inserting a coin into a slot, temple visitors could buy a specific amount of holy water.)

Ancient Greek buildings sometimes had showers and even central heating. Around 600 BC, the Greeks dug a two-thirds-mile tunnel on the island of Samos to supply the capital with water. And the Greek explorer Pytheas sailed as far north as Scandinavia!

Around 1960, scientists discovered that this ancient Greek device found in a ship-wreck was actually an early computer! Astronomers designed it to calculate positions of the sun, moon, and planets.

Greek scientists were not perfect, of course. Even bright guys like Aristotle thought that the Earth was the center of the universe, and that the heart was the center of human intelligence. (The brain, he said, was just a big cooling organ.) The great Greek mathematician Pythagoras refused to eat (or even touch) beans: He and his followers were sure that beans had souls!

But in general, the Greeks reached heights of scientific knowledge that wouldn’t be surpassed in Europe for almost two thousand years.

Myth Information
But apart from their scientific thinking, the Greeks also had a rich tradition of storytelling about gods and goddesses, brave heroes, and hideous monsters.

What we think of as ancient Greek civilization was actually a big clash of cultures: a series of migrations from the north into the prehistoric civilizations of the Greek isles. Each of these tribes brought their own oral traditions with them, and Greek mythology was what they created from this mishmash of different stories.

The Greeks were polytheists (“pah-lee-THEE-ists”), meaning they believed in many gods. They worshipped these gods by making offerings at stone altars. At home their courtyard would have an altar to a household god. Their village or city would have temples with larger altars and statues of different gods. Before a family meal, you might sacrifice to Hestia, the goddess of the hearth, with an offering of burned meat. Before beginning a journey, you might travel to a temple of Hermes, the god of travelers, to pray and leave a votive offering (an object like a coin or a small statue) in his sacred grove.

We Found Love

In 1970 a long-lost temple to Aphrodite was unearthed at Knidos, in modern-day Turkey. Aphrodite was the Greek goddess of love, and one of her messengers was the rainbow goddess Iris. Weirdly, the archaeologist who rediscovered the temple was a New York socialite named Iris Love!

When they needed special guidance from the gods, Greeks would go to specific temples and consult oracles. Oracles were priests or (usually) priestesses who spoke on behalf of the gods. At the temple of Apollo at Delphi, the oracle would offer prophecies on the seventh day of every month. She would chew leaves from a sacred laurel tree and inhale volcanic fumes. In a frenzied state, she would then begin to utter strange sounds and words, which priests would translate to visitors.

In myth, the advice from oracles isn’t like a weather forecast—it’s always 100 percent accurate, no matter what you do to avoid your fate. For example, an oracle once told King Acrisius of Argos that his grandson would kill him one day—and even though he tried to abandon the grandson at sea, the baby survived and grew up to be Perseus, a great hero. Many years later, while Perseus was competing in an athletic contest, he accidentally threw a discus into the crowd—and killed his grandpa.

King Croesus of Lydia once asked the oracle at Delphi if he should go to war with the Persians. The oracle told him, “If you attack Persia, you will destroy a great empire.” Croesus was thrilled and marched his men to war, but lost badly. The empire he destroyed turned out to be his own!

School’s Out!

At larger religious feasts and festivals, whole cities would worship the gods together. Athens, the greatest of the ancient Greek mini-kingdoms, had more than one hundred of these festivals every year, so Athenian kids must have had it easy: that’s a different holiday every three days or so!

The Greek World

The Greeks believed that Apollo’s oracle at Delphi was the center of the world. In one myth Zeus had two birds fly from opposite edges of the world, and a big rock at Delphi called the omphalos marked the exact spot where the birds met. Omphalos is Greek for “navel”—they thought of this stone as the earth’s belly button! (The earth has an “outie.”)

Many Greek scientists, especially in later periods, believed that the earth was round, but in mythology, the earth is a flat disk divided into three continents: Europe, Asia (Asia Minor and the Near East), and Libya (Africa). These lands were surrounded on all sides by Oceanus, the source of all water. Oceanus was a Titan with six thousand children—can you imagine all the parent-teacher conferences that poor guy had to go to? His three thousand sons were the earth’s rivers and his three thousand daughters were ponds and springs.

Mountains were holy places where the gods were known to walk—like Mount Ida, where Zeus was raised, or Mount Helicon, where the Muses sang.

Riding High
The tallest mountain in Greece was Olympus, and because it was often shrouded in clouds, the Greeks believed their gods lived and ruled there. It was said that the mountain was so high that a bronze anvil falling from Olympus to earth would take nine full days and nights to land! (Depending on your math, that means the gods could live as high as 300,000 miles above the world—almost as high as the moon!)

The sky was a dome held up in the west by the Titan Atlas, and many gods traveled across it. The sun was Helios, who kept herds of cattle and sheep—one each for every day of the year—on a faraway island in the east. Every day he drove his fiery chariot across the sky, seeing and hearing everything, like a spy satellite, until he landed in the west at sunset. Then he would sail back home in a great golden cup and feast until dawn.

The moon goddess was Selene, who watched over the earth by night from her silver chariot. Eos, the rosy-fingered goddess of dawn, lived in the east, and the morning dew was her tears after her son Memnon died at Troy.

The Perks of Being a Small Flower
Lots of Greek myths are stories to explain the origin of things in nature, like lightning being the anger of Zeus, or dew being the tears of Eos. Here are three you might not know about.

1. THE HYACINTH FLOWER Hyacinthus was tossing a discus around with the god Apollo when Zephyrus, the mean west wind, blew Apollo’s throw off course. Hyacinthus was killed. A bright red hyacinth flower rose from his spilled blood, and the leaves were marked with a pattern like the letters AI AI, the sound of Apollo’s grief.

2. THE ROOSTER The gods Ares and Aphrodite asked young Alectryon to warn them when the sun came up, so that Helios wouldn’t catch them together. Alectryon fell asleep, so an angry Ares turned him into a rooster, which is why roosters always remember to announce the sunrise.

3. THE MILKY WAY The hero Heracles was incredibly strong, even as a baby. The first time he was given milk as a newborn, he sucked up so much that he coughed violently, spattering the milk on the heavens, which we can still see today as the Milky Way.

Rolling in the Deep
Beneath the earth was the land of the dead, sometimes called Hades (after the Greek god of the dead) or Erebus. It was a dark and gloomy place. The god Hermes led dead souls there, crossing five rivers:

ACHERON: the river of sorrow

COCYTUS: the river of lamentation

PHLEGETHON: the river of fire

LETHE: the river of forgetfulness

STYX: the river of hate

Greeks would put a coin in a corpse’s mouth before it was buried, so that the dead person could use it to pay the ferryman, Charon, to take him across the River Styx.

Three mythical kings—Rhadamanthus, Aeacus, and Minos—would then judge every soul.
Go to Hades! (A Helpful Guide)
ARE YOU BREATHING?

Yes STAY OUT!

No Welcome to Hades!

DID YOU LIVE A GOOD LIFE?

Yes The Elysian Fields. A paradise of cool west winds, sports, and music. The soil bears three crops a year, and earth’s dead heroes live in peace.

Sometimes The Asphodel Meadows. A vast, flowered plain, ghostly and boring. No one remembers their name—all memories of life have been wiped away by the River Lethe.

Nope Tartarus. A pit of terrible winds, surrounded by three layers of night and locked by Poseidon’s great bronze doors. It’s full of imprisoned monsters as well as mortals who deserved special punishment.

The Buttless Wonder

The hero Theseus sat down on a magic bench in Hades to rest and found himself trapped in the dark for years. Eventually Heracles passed by and managed to pull him up—but Theseus’s bottom stayed stuck to the rock! For the rest of his life he was called Theseus Hypolipsos, meaning “rear end rubbed smooth.”

When in Rome . . .
Greek mythology got a second lease on life centuries later, when Rome became the world’s most powerful empire. The Romans admired the ancient Greeks and borrowed their myths, adapting them to their own gods. Even though the names changed—Zeus became Jupiter, Aphrodite became Venus—the stories stayed the same. (We’ll see a full list of the Greek and Roman gods during third period.)

Pop Quiz!

All the planets of our solar system are named after Roman (or Greek) gods—except one. Which one?

The Greek religion didn’t survive the spread of Christianity, but its stories have lived on. Our vocabulary has hundreds of words drawn from Greek myth: “hyacinth,” from Hyacinthus, whose blood bore the bright red flower, for example, or “ocean” from the waters of Oceanus. You can’t even go to the mall without seeing dozens of names and symbols from mythology:

Name

In Mythology

Today

Ajax

a Greek hero of the Trojan War

a cleaning powder

Amazon

a tribe of warrior women

an online retailer

Mercury

the Roman name for Hermes

a car

Midas

a king with a “golden touch”

a muffler shop

Nike

the goddess of victory

a shoe

Olympus

Even three thousand years later, if you don’t know these stories, you’re really myth-ing out.

Brilliant
By Heather
Thanks Ken Jennings. High level information formatted so that a curious 9 year old can dig right in, have some fun doing it (entertaingly written). My son was very sad that he had to sit through 60 minutes of his little sister's gymnastics practice without an "electronic device" but I pulled this out and when practice was over I had to literally stick my hand between his face and the book to get his attention back from it. Awesome, and he's going to kick butt at cocktail party conversation in a decade or so.

Loved by kids and teachers, too!
By ABC911
This is so well written for young intermediate readers. I bought a set of them to use with my third grade class. The kids love the style of writing and the drawings in each chapter. It makes a superb book for kids who love mythology, but could use a little tweaking for us teachers. :)

I wish each chapter of his books were more descriptive so while previewing we could see what topics were discussed (Ken Jennings titles each chapter after a class period- 'period 1', 'period 2', 'period 3', lunch, etc.).

He has a great "trading card" format for the major gods for kids wanting to find out specifics about a favorite god (powers, symbols, family members, interesting facts) and I wish he would do the same for a large portion of the minor gods as well.

Lastly, I really wish he had an index! The kids who wish to find out about Prometheus, for example, have a really hard time finding it with both the nondescript chapter titles and the lack of an index.

I realize Ken Jennings probably wasn't intending for his books to be used by classroom teachers, but I LOVE how he writes for kids. His style is entertaining and fact-filled. Kids love them!

And if Ken Jennings were ever to read this review- I wish he'd write a book summarizing the Greek myth stories for kids. I've bought many written by other authors...some are hard for third graders to read, others leave out too many details and yet most only have a select few myths.

These books are phenomenal for 8-12 year olds. I find even those who shy away from nonfiction are eager to read these!

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—These titles are sure to whet the appetites of animal-loving children and maybe even some adults. Each book starts off with a few basic facts in the form of questions, such as "Did you know female chickens are called hens and male chickens are called roosters?" After that, things take off. Cool and intriguing facts about different animals (except household pets) are highlighted in two-page spreads. The transition between animals is smooth, and the authors do a commendable job of connecting or contrasting a fact or attribute of one animal to the next. For example, in Hippos Can't Swim, it is mentioned that jellyfish can produce light in their bodies, which is used to scare off predators. The next animals to be discussed are fireflies, whose light is used to communicate and to attract mates. In addition to the collection of interesting facts, the illustrations are comical and entertaining, though average in quality. Young readers are sure to be amused by these zany looking animals. These lively books are great choices for general purchase.—Jeanette Lambert, Nashville-Davidson County Schools, TN

From Booklist
Fascinating facts about mammals combine with irreverent, exaggerated cartoon illustrations to engage children about the peculiarity of the animal kingdom. Some of the facts are of the need-to-know variety, while others are simply curious tidbits that will lead readers to seek further information elsewhere. (Some adults may feel the need to verify some of the more unbelievable factoids.) The authors connect each animal to the next one discussed and even link the last back to the first. This entry in the Did You Know? series closes with one additional fact about each of the animals—and this would have been an appropriate place to insert an actual photo of the animal. A source page would have added credibility, too. Meanwhile, the brief text, in either black or white, is superimposed over Oswald’s colorful, full-page illustrations. Pair with Buffy Silverman’s Do You Know about Mammals? (2009). Preschool-Grade 3. --J. B. Petty

Hild: A Novel, by Nicola Griffith

A brilliant, lush, sweeping historical novel about the rise of one of the most powerful woman of the Middle Ages: Hild

In seventh-century Britain, small kingdoms are merging, frequently and violently. A new religion is coming ashore; the old gods are struggling, their priests worrying. Hild is the king's youngest niece, and she has a glimmering mind and a natural, noble authority. She will become a fascinating woman and one of the pivotal figures of the Middle Ages: Saint Hilda of Whitby.

But now she has only the powerful curiosity of a bright child, a will of adamant, and a way of seeing the world--of studying nature, of matching cause with effect, of observing her surroundings closely and predicting what will happen next--that can seem uncanny, even supernatural, to those around her.

Her uncle, Edwin of Northumbria, plots to become overking of the Angles, ruthlessly using every tool at his disposal: blood, bribery, belief. Hild establishes a place for herself at his side as the king's seer. And she is indispensable--unless she should ever lead the king astray. The stakes are life and death: for Hild, for her family, for her loved ones, and for the increasing numbers who seek the protection of the strange girl who can read the world and see the future.

Hild is a young woman at the heart of the violence, subtlety, and mysticism of the early Middle Ages--all of it brilliantly and accurately evoked by Nicola Griffith's luminous prose. Working from what little historical record is extant, Griffith has brought a beautiful, brutal world to vivid, absorbing life.

Hild is a knock out read!
By MusingCrow
I don't know where to start. I read a lot, generally at least two books a week. I love large, thick books that can take awhile to read. When I love a book, the longer it lasts the better it is! I read with enjoyment. I don't spend my reading time with anything that I don't enjoy, which is why I seldom give books less than 3 stars here or on any other site on which I post my reviews. Actually, most of my reviews are 4-5 stars. This one should have at last 7 stars by that reckoning. Some books, very few actually, are finished but stay with me, like the after taste of a particularly fine something .. wine, chocolate, a favorite dessert or meal. This book is staying with me, and I am wishing that the sequel was already available so that I could continue to savor the reading.

Ms. Griffith is a master at prose. This book, in places, reads more like poetry, each word so finely tuned that they sing like a finely tuned violin or as the voices in a perfectly pitched acapella.

I have to admit to having a few issues with the uniqueness of names and places in this seventh century world that we enter when we open this book, but it did not take long for me to fall into the book and become one with the pages and the story.

We step into the story of St. Hilda, but this story gives so very much more. We walk in the life of the seventh century. We go to the dairy house and help make butter, we smell the torches, hearth lights and the blood of war. We feel the tensions of King and thegns, the stress as the old, polytheistic, religions give way to the new, Christ, religion. As a female I weigh the place of women in this ancient society; the withering work of simply 'being' in this cold, calculating, somewhat viscious time, the offering of wine and mead - and sometimes of something more.

This book is lyrically written, each moment poignant. Hild, the daughter of a would-have-been king is a person who is patient, who sees and hears things and uses knowledge to uphold her position as the King's trusted seer. Her mother, a women, the widow of the 'would-have-been-king' has not standing, no property. She who is a healer and she uses nothing more than her wits to preserve the life of her children.

This is a book that takes hold of you and transports you. I simply could not put this book down! Well done Nicola Griffth! Let there be more ! I can't wait!

This book should appeal to everyone because of how well it is written, but it will hold special interest for those of us who have an affinity for historical fiction and, more than that, anyone who appreciates perfectly wrought fiction.

"Quiet mouth, bright mind."
By Amelia Gremelspacher
This novel, based in seventh century England, is well worth braving the intimidating names and language of that era. The names for people and and things were based on a bewildering blend of Irish, Ancient British, Latin, and Old English. I would advise the reader to allow oneself to coast a bit and have faith that the bewilderment will clear. Many of the unfamiliar terms can be taken in context successfully. As can often be the case, the extra effort is well worth it.

Hild is an extraordinary girl based on a real historic figure who went on to be venerated as a saint. In this volume, she has lost her father to poisoning. Her mother is a woman who uses nature, herbs, and instinct to survive in the court of her brother, the king. In stunning sequences, Hild uses her mother's teachings and her own skills to meld her mind into the world around her to detect the rhythms and meanings held there. Daughters are regarded as natural peace singers, and the added skills of the gifted woman are treasured. Witchcraft and ancient skills and religions are assumed. Hild rises to be a royal advisor at a dizzyingly young age.

Britain was a land swept by scourges of war. A civilization lives within the strength if its king, and peace is dearly won. With the bands of rulers travel the conflicting religions, including the new religion of "Christ." Griffin achieves a breathtaking view of life in this land of treacherous currents. This writer has been able to take the reader into a framework in which the ancient language and the rhythm of the days become familiar and immediate. "Hild" is a saga in the true tradition of the heroic journey, well worth the trip.

...the child begets the woman, cleft to her wyrd
By eyes.2c
Hild the child that would become Saint Hilda of Whitby. Griffith's novel illuminates the person Hild might have been in her earliest years. The known is cleverly interwoven into the storyline. Hild's father, Prince Hereric, was nephew to King Edwin of Northumbria. He was poisoned. Hild was brought up in the court of King Edwin.
Hild's wyrd (personal destiny) is her path. She is 'Light of the World'. She carries a seax, a type of dagger, and she stands tall.
Her sister Herewith's wyrd is different. She will be a queen.
I found it hard to resolve the description of Hild in her very young years. She is marked as special from birth. A child heavy with her future wrapped around her. Even as young as three, Hild's clarity of thought and perception is prodigious, and later as still a child not yet come into her womanhood, her wisdom is more like that of a mature woman. After all wisdom is what Hilda of Whitby will become renowned for, along with having contributed in the christianizing of Britain.
In this fictional account of Hild's life, just as the Irish priest Fursey did, I found it sad that Hild was never allowed to be a maid, young and carefree. Her feet are set on her path from birth, thrust there by her wyrd and kept there by her mother, Breguswith.
Seer to a King, a prophet, Hild learns early to watch and understand many aspects of her world, be it nature, animals, the wind, the season for plants, the stars, the flow of the rivers. She studied behaviour, carefully watching people and identifying their tell-tail tags, gauging their interactions and reactions. Hild studies the languages of the various peoples of her land, including the roman priests. She learns to read and values the gift of communication it is. This all helps in her reaching to understand portents and possibilities.
Everywhere is the struggle for power by kings and their priests. The struggle for kingdoms, lost and gained, and of the old gods destroyed and a new god rising. Hild is ever concerned with wars and the business of kingdoms, their waxing and waning.
And always there is the mystery of her childhood companion Cian. Cian who is always more.
The difficult path she weaves between the various courtly interests, waring princes and her mother's intrigue is fascinating. Life at this time, especially for women, is relayed so realistically you feel like you are there. The role of women is clearly defined, yet as the King's seer Hild rides beyond that place. Later she becomes the King's Fist, at great emotional cost. And for Hild there is the waxing and waning as times change, and old enemies become new, old threats are revisited. Her search for her true self is painful. For Hild 'there were patterns everywhere.'
'Tumult in the river mouth', Hild sang to herself when but a child. Words that were a promise of the path her wyrd will take her down.
The more I read, the more I was drawn in.

Fly Away, by Patricia MacLachlan

From the Newbery Award–winning author of Sarah, Plain and Tall comes a story about one brave girl who saves her family from losing everything. In a starred review, Publishers Weekly calls this lyrical tale “melodic, poetic, and enchanting.”

Everyone in Lucy’s family sings. Opera. Rap. Lullabies. Everyone, except Lucy. Lucy can’t sing; her voice won’t come out.

Just like singing, helping Aunt Frankie prepare for flooding season is a family tradition—even if Frankie doesn’t want the help. And this year, when the flood arrives and danger finds its way into the heart of Lucy’s family, Lucy will need to find her voice to save her brother.

“Filled with little moments of quiet wisdom and gentle humor, Newbery winner MacLachlan's story about family love soars” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

From Booklist
Lucy and her family make their annual trip to visit Aunt Frankie in North Dakota just as floodwaters rise, threatening her home. Meanwhile, Lucy shares a secret with her little brother, Teddy: though the rest of the family thinks that he can’t talk yet, she knows that he can. He climbs into bed every evening and sings to her. While they’re at Aunt Frankie’s house, Teddy coaxes Lucy, the one person in their musical family who “can’t sing,” to sing to him. When Teddy goes missing near the swollen river, her voice is the only sound that might save him. Author of the Newbery Medal–winning Sarah Plain and Tall (1985), MacLachlan writes with simplicity and clarity, weaving adults and children into a close-knit circle of caring. While Lucy’s warm, supportive family will be comforting to some readers, others may find the idealized characters off-putting at times. The appealing jacket art, large type, and wide-spaced lines of text make this volume an inviting choice for readers who are beginning to read longer chapter books. Grades 2-4. --Carolyn Phelan

Speaks to the soul
By KidsReads
Secrets. Everybody has one. And talents. Everyone has one of those, too. Discovering your talents and learning about secrets (when/who to tell and what happens when you do/don’t tell) are both part of growing up.

Grandma Frankie lives in a house in North Dakota, and her daughter, Maggie is worried about her --- it’s been raining for days and Maggie remembers the dangers of floods from her own childhood. Therefore, Maggie and her daughter, Lucy, go to visit Grandma Frankie --- even though she says she doesn’t need or want their help.

Lucy has a secret about her brother, Teddy, but nobody knows it. She also has a talent, but she doesn’t know it --- yet. Her experiences at Grandma Frankie’s teach her about the importance of secrets and how to discover her talents. Lucy also learns about the importance of family: “Family means offering help when it’s not asked for, accepting help when you think you don’t need it, sharing joys, keeping secrets, and singing your song."

Patricia MacLachlan is the author of many novels and picture books. Her book, SARAH, PLAIN AND TALL was a Newbery Medal award-winner. I have read of couple of MacLachlan’s books. Her stories always speak to the soul. This one was no exception. Her writing is powerful. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though I was choking back tears near the end. I hope you enjoy the story as much as I did.

Everyone is unique with something to offer. Everyone has secret dreams and hopes and this book gets that.
By M. Fuller
Oh this book. This Gigantic-fonted 100 paged innocent looking thing. I read it in just an hour or so but it will stick with me for a long time. Patricia MacLachlan is talented. I haven't read her other works yet (but definitely will) but she writes complex ideas with minimal words. This is a book a young child could read easily, but it is not a simple boring story.

It's about family (I suspect most of this author's works are) and how one messy family came together when a flood was threatening their house. Frankie lives in the house her sister and she grew up in, but now, the river is coming and the family wants to help. "That river. She's a her in my book. She's been a friend most of these years, bringing boaters who deliver groceries. Bringing birds and beauty. We've lived through storms and sunrises and sunsets. Winter Squalls. I want to see how far she's going to crawl up my hill. I want to know if she'll come into my house. Sometimes I talk to her at night. She's great company."

So the river flood is happening, but as in real life so are a million other things too. Our main character, a child named Lucy secretly wants to be a poet, lives in a family of singers and cannot carry a tune. Her sister is an amazing artist but no one quite knows yet, and it turns out Lucy is the only one who knows her 2 year old brother Teddy can sing like an angel. He doesn't use words, but every night he sings just to his big sister. The adults have their problems too, but they are all through the lens of a child so it is felt, but not explained. The mother I related to more than I wanted to. Her youngest hasn't bonded with her as well, and she feels guilt over it. She also wants to be or do something more with her life but can't quite put her finger on it.

"No, it isn't you. Mama needs something all her own, that's all," he [Dad] says.
He goes out to where Mama is.
"Mama needs more than us," I say.
"Not really," says Frankie. "she just doesn't quite know what she has. She never did. She'll find that out one day. I promise."

If you are a mom, you know exactly how that feels, if you aren't there are other things in the story for you to relate to, and that's the brilliancy of it all. The whole book reads almost like a long poem, while still being accessible to anyone. More happens, secrets come out and the family comes together. I laugh because the little 2 year old is brilliant but quite. It reminded me so much of my little girl. We were so worried about her because she was a late talker, only to have her bust out counting to over ten shortly after she began saying "Mama."

Everyone is unique with something to offer. Everyone has secret dreams and hopes and this book gets that.

Great and memorable characters in the story
By Debnance at Readerbuzz
Lucy and her family are headed to help her aunt. It is flooding around her aunt's house and Lucy's family wants to help. Great and memorable characters in the story, all with a bit of a stubborn Midwestern quality that makes them endearing. Lucy's brother is two but doesn't talk yet...or so her parents think. Lucy's mother has aspirations that have not been met and is a little disappointed with how life has turned out. Lucy herself doesn't sing and that's another sadness for her mother. A complex story perfect for a young reader.
