This is a great way to introduce a child to one of the famous Greek myths. The retelling of the mess Pandora gets herself into because of too much curiosity is simply done to hold the new reader's interest. The illustrations are very good as well. Over all, this is an excellent, inexpensive package that will be fun to read and hopefully make your child want to learn more about Greek mythology.

An Excellent Book on Liferay Portal Performance
By Xinsheng Chen
Summary

This book talks about optimizing the performance of your Liferay portal based application through design, coding and system configuration. In the first section, the author talks about aspects in architecture for a better performing site. Then he explains how to cluster multiple Liferay portal instances for a quickly-responding web application. He talks about how to improve performance by configuring the Liferay portal, the application server and the Apache web server. Then he elaborates on the best practices in coding for a fast-running web site. In the last section, the author explains how to do load testing and optimize the number of database connections and cache settings.

Opinion

Samir Bhatt, the author, has been in the IT industry for 12 years. He has hands-on experience in designing Liferay portal based web applications with excellent performance. He has personally fixed performance issues on web application projects. He is the co-author of a Liferay Beginners Guide book. Samir Bhatt is the right person to write this book.
This book is the first book on performance tuning for the Liferay portal based projects. You may have attended Liferay symposiums or seminars. You may have read Portable Document Format (PDF) documents about Liferay portal performance adjustment. But those are scattered information. This book provides you systematic ways to configure and deliver a Liferay portal project.
The book is a comprehensive book on delivering a Liferay portal project with good performance. It covers the performance topics in architecture, coding and testing. It provides instructions about configuring the Liferay portal, the application server and the Apache web server for better performance. When it talks about caching, it elaborates on cache settings, cache APIs like JGroups and the integration of Terracotta with the Liferay portal.
The book contains much original content. When people configure a cluster environment of Liferay portal instances, they usually use mod_jk or mod_proxy_ajp. This book provides the third way of cluster configuration: using mod_proxy_http. It also contains other Liferay portal configurations that may not be known to many Liferay portal fans.
The author is insightful to put project architecture for performance in Chapter 1 - good performance starts at project design. The author talks about multiple options for designing a quickly-responding web site. For an optimized sizing of the web site, the author asks about the number of concurrent users at the web site. Chapter 1 also mentions that log-in is the most resource-consuming use case in the Liferay portal.
The book has many practical tips for architects, developers and system administrators. Do you know how to merge all the CSS files in a custom Liferay theme before they are delivered to the browser? This is talked about in Chapter 5. How many database connection objects should you keep in your database connection pool? You can get that optimized value through load testing, which is explained in Chapter 6.
The book is written in simple English. The narration is smooth, making it easy for readers to follow the instructions. The instructions are accompanied with screenshots.
On an overall basis, I strongly recommend this book to web application developers, Liferay portal fans and Java lovers.

Who should read this book

A Liferay portal architect should read this book before he does his next Liferay portal project. When his project is a large-scale project or his project involves complicated permission rules, performance becomes a top priority item in his list of tasks. This book will tell him what hardware to use, which technologies to adopt and how the production environment should be set up - this book has provided comprehensive information to help him make such decisions.
A Liferay portal developer should read this book. To write good code for performance, an excellent developer should avoid memory leak, strive to use less memory and access the application server and database server less. He can improve his code quality for performance by taking the advice in this book.
A system administrator for Liferay should read this book. This book contains explicit configuration settings he can copy and paste in his Apache web server, application server and Liferay portal instance.

By Sebastián Filippini
It is a great book that every architect or developer should read before install a Liferay-based solution, especially if it is a solution with many users. All key points are compiled in one place and there are various tips that can be applied to many general Java applications.

Much needed book - well written and focussed
By David A. Weitzel
Liferay Portal Performance Best Practices is a book that has been missing for along time. It fills the gap between developing and administering Liferay Portal installations by focusing on how to configure the system for best performance.
The book achieves this high rating by being well structured and extremely easy to follow. When alternatives are available he covers this without being sidetracked from a particular chapter or section focus, usually then covering the details of the alternative in a later section. One good example of this is the use of SOLR search engine instead of the default and included Lucene.
This is the first book that I have been able to read and comprehend easily in terms of how to set up load balancing and clustering and all the relevant connections needed to ensure cache and content is updated, once again covering the popular alternatives to standard out of the box Liferay.
In chapter 3 the author covers many of the standard Liferay property settings and describes why they are there and hot to configure or turn them off if not needed, in order to get better performance. Settings such as the auto logins, url filters and so on. This chapter by itself is worth the money in that it serves as a check list of your portal.properties file for operational running and not development.
The final chapter covers performance monitoring especially when doing load testing using scripted test engines but also to help identify bottlenecks in live operation. It is by no means an in depth instruction on the tools used but give the reader enough to get started and then look up individual reference books for more options and interpretation.

In summary this should be essential reading for all staff responsible for deploying and supporting live Liferay installations.

Book description is Misleading
By Bubbles
The book description: "When they encounter another group of dogs who survived the Big Growl, Lucky hopes that they can work together as allies—but this new Pack may be their most dangerous enemy yet." Is incredibly misleading! This pack has hardly anything to do in the book other than posing a threat. Never, not once did any of the dogs think they could work together with this new pack. Almost from the first meeting everyone knew that this pack would tear them to shreds because of their mad, crazy Alpha and that there would be no way to talk things out!

I enjoyed this book much more than the others. Probably because Lick started taking a bigger role in the books. Her personality seemed a bit strange though, she seems to act aggressive at seemingly random times when the rest of the time she is a level headed pup. I still am not a fan of Alpha's new personality, it's still fractured and unusual - he doesn't seem to be at all what he was portrayed as in the first books. In fact in this book he has really embraced that sense of paranoia, distrust and the inability to make decisions for his pack on his own; all while being bundled up in a blanket of anger and frustration.

best book so far
By Joseph K.
I love this series soooooo much and this is the best book so far! ( spoiler review) The now united pack has come to an abandon longpaw (human) town and is temporarily sheltering in a longpaw place. Lucky's street smarts are very useful in a place simalar to where he used to live. He got food out from a food house(resturant) and found a nest of rats to hunt. Squirm, Nose, and Lick get their true names Beetle (Squirm) Thorn (Nose) and Storm (Lick). They also encounter a pack of dogs that is scared into submission by their insane leader Terror who follows the so called "Fear-dog". Twitch is back and his bad leg is completely gone so he is a three legged dog now. Fiery challenges Alpha for his position but never begins it because he was kidnaped by the yellow longpaws that the dogs have been watching out for. Lucky and a group of dogs including Twitch, Lick, and Moon go to rescue him. They do save him but they are attacked by Terror's pack and Fiery is killed. Lick fights Terror and some how kills him so Lucky gives Lick her naming ceramony and she choses the name Storm before returning to the pack. I wonder if Alpha would approve.....?

But when the scarlet dragon gets sick, the only cure is a potion made with vixberries that grow deep in the forest of Burth (the land of trolls). Lucas and Clara set out to find these special berries, but the task is harder than they expected. Will they be able to find the berries and save the scarlet dragon?

With easy-to-read language and illustrations on almost every page, The Kingdom of Wrenly chapter books are perfect for beginning readers.

Good book and series
By Steven R. McEvoy
This was the second book in the Secrets of Wrenly series that we have read as a family. My oldest daughter and I took turn's reading it to the younger children. All of us thoroughly enjoyed the book. This is one of a few series we are reading currently together. The children really enjoy the illustrations. The reading level is such that my grade 4 can read it easily, and yet the story is entertaining enough that all the way down to kindergarten love reading it.

The illustrations by Robert McPhillips really help make the story. We have been reading these books electronically and the kids love expanding the pictures and zooming in to see all the details. The pen and ink or line sketches really do contain a lot of details. The children love going back and forth to the pictures as we read.

As the second book in the series there is less set up and background compared to the first story. Therefore we jump right into the adventure. In this story a Scarlet dragon egg is found, but soon after hatching it becomes Ill. Lucas and Clara go on an adventure to find special berries, vixberries to be specific, that will help cure the dragonling.

Overall this was better than book one. And it sets up lots of promising future reading with 8 more books already out in the series. We are looking forward to seeing what Clara and Lucas get up to next. These books are great for young readers and those who read to them. So go for an adventure in Wrenly I am sure you will enjoy the quest.

Codename Zero (Codename Conspiracy), by Chris Rylander

From Chris Rylander, author of the breakout hit Fourth Stall saga, comes an incredibly funny and clever mash-up of middle grade school story and spy adventure.

There are places in the world where heroes are born. There are places where brave men and women fight a never-ending battle against evil in order to keep our country and all other countries safe. There are places where the fate of our planet is being decided, even at this very moment, the consequences of which will echo through history.

None of these places is in North Dakota.

Carson Fender, seventh grader and notorious prankster, knows this. He's lived in North Dakota for his entire life, going to the same boring school every day, the same boring movie theater every week, the same boring state fair every year. Nothing ever changes, and nothing ever happens. That is, until today. Because today a desperate man hands him a package with a dire set of instructions. And that package is going to lead Carson to discover that there's a secret government agency operating in his small, quiet North Dakota hometown. And that this agency needs his help.

From School Library Journal
Gr 6–8—Carson is a perpetually bored seventh grader who satisfies his craving for action by orchestrating increasingly elaborate pranks at school. One day, he is handed a mysterious package and told he must deliver it—but not open it under any circumstances!—and suddenly life becomes anything but boring. The package is connected to a top-secret government agency, which recruits Carson to protect one of his classmates and foil the plans of a terrorist organization. Excitement builds as Carson—codename Zero—and his quirky friends put together the puzzle as only a team of plucky, imaginative kids can. Carson and his friends are funny and likable, and the pacing of the story is just right. The action steadily builds to a climax that satisfies, yet also whets the appetite for a sequel. Good for reluctant readers, and for any kid who likes tales of action, mischief, and friendship.—Emma Burkhart, Springside School, Philadelphia, PA

From Booklist
Seventh-grader Carson Fender pulls pranks to liven up the most boring school in the most boring city in the most boring state. But when a stranger gives him a mysterious package, Carson discovers that there is a supersecret government agency in town, and it wants his help. That plot produces an initially fast-paced and energetic story, and although part of the book’s appeal is its humor, it can fall flat at times. The supporting cast is a bit one-dimensional but entertaining. The mysterious-package countdown gives a lot of tension to the first part of the story, which then slows toward the end. But now that the series has a setup, further adventures should be able to move forward; enough dangling threads remain to support what comes next. Grades 4-7. --Peggy Hailey

AWESOME!
By This Kid Reviews Books
Everything was going as planned for Carson Fender. The goats were distracting everyone at school. Now, he and his friends, could glue down everything in the school’s classrooms (and the principal’s office). This practical joke would be his finest!

Suddenly, he found himself being handed a box by a guy in a black suit and dark sunglasses. The guy told him not to open the box and deliver it to Mr. Jensen. The problem is, Carson opened it and now it will self-destruct in 48 hours unless he finds the correct Mr. Jensen (there are two in school). Carson soon realizes that his boring home town is home to a secret government agency and he’s the newest recruit.

I found this book not to be the typical spy story (which I thought it was going to be at first)- Carson has to help a kid in a witness protection program “fit in” so he wouldn’t be noticed. I liked that this story had a different plot idea. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story. It was funny, exciting and fast-paced. Carson was a great main character. I loved his personality. The book had a great ending -almost too good. I would love to read another book about Carson (I don’t think this is a series). I would have liked to know more about the kid in the witness protection program, but it wasn’t necessary for the story to be complete. Mr. Rylander’s writes a great book!
*NOTE I got an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review

This book was awesome from the start, really, who would have thought of putting fainting goats in a kids book? It was action filled from the start and kept going. The humor, oh my gosh, it had me laughing so hard at times. The characters were well rounded and believable. It was a book I just kept reading. Awesome book Mr. Rylander, I hope you make into a series so my N.E.R.D.S. fans have another series to read, and, I really want to find out about Nineteen.

Hearts and Minds: A People's History of Counterinsurgency (New Press People's History)From The New Press

The first book of its kind, Hearts and Minds is a scathing response to the grand narrative of U.S. counterinsurgency, in which warfare is defined not by military might alone but by winning the "hearts and minds" of civilians. Dormant as a tactic since the days of the Vietnam War, in 2006 the U.S. Army drafted a new field manual heralding the resurrection of counterinsurgency as a primary military engagement strategy; counterinsurgency campaigns followed in Iraq and Afghanistan, despite the fact that counterinsurgency had utterly failed to account for the actual lived experiences of the people whose hearts and minds America had sought to win.

Drawing on leading thinkers in the field and using key examples from Malaya, the Philippines, Vietnam, El Salvador, Iraq, and Afghanistan, Hearts and Minds brings a long-overdue focus on the many civilians caught up in these conflicts. Both urgent and timely, this important book challenges the idea of a neat divide between insurgents and the populations from which they emerge—and should be required reading for anyone engaged in the most important contemporary debates over U.S. military policy.

From Publishers Weekly
N.Y.U. Professor Gurman compiles essays on counterinsurgency (COIN), defined as efforts to eliminate an uprising against a government and whose chief aim is to separate the insurgents from the population. COIN is traced from the Kennedy administration all the way back to Lawrence of Arabia. Contributing authors appraise COIN in countries from Malaya (Malaysia), the Philippines, and Vietnam, to El Salvador, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and discuss various intimidating and punitive COIN tactics, including psychological warfare, night raids, police sweeps, targeted assassinations, scorched-earth campaigns, and softer techniques like the use of state-of-the-art technologies and close cooperation between military and civilian intelligence agencies. Emphasis is placed on the fact that, historically, COIN operations often worsen the climate of misery in war-torn nations, yet their effects are sometimes downplayed to conceal the grisly reality on the ground. Less attention, notably, is given to COIN successes, leading one to wonder if there have been any. Overall, the book leaves readers with a distinct impression of the difficulties of quelling insurrection when rebels, in Mao&'s words, move amongst the people as a fish swims in the sea. (Oct.)

From Booklist
In December 2006, amidst protracted conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the U.S. military released FM 3-24, a new field manual on counterinsurgency (or COIN, in military-speak). Coauthored by David Petraeus and built in part upon his dissertation on Vietnam, its stated purpose was to help prepare U.S. Army and Marine Corps leaders to conduct COIN operations anywhere in the world by collecting and codifying the accumulated lessons of several generations of U.S. counterinsurgency warfare around the world. FM 3-24 and other procounterinsurgency articles that emerged around the same time gave rise to what New York University scholar Gurman describes as a grand narrative of COIN that was used to indoctrinate military personnel, as well as the public, into the COIN paradigm. Collecting eight scholarly papers on the history, theory, and practice of counterinsurgency warfare, this selection aims to counter this grand narrative by identifying the limitations, contradictions, and outright failures of COIN warfare and emphasizing its consequences for the people living in places where COIN is used. Gurman herself writes on Vietnam; other commentators cover actions in Malaya, the Philippines, El Salvador, Iraq, and Afghanistan. One of several recent works criticizing COIN (see also Colonel Gian Gentile’s Wrong Turn, 2013), readers looking for a multi-vocal survey of the issue will appreciate this selection. --Brendan Driscoll

Review
"Counterinsurgency is a tactical phoenix, dying only to rise again, ever-ready to win hearts and minds for the American empire. This essential volume makes it possible to understand the past and prepare for the next time the siren song of counterinsurgency is sung."
—Marilyn Young

"Hannah Gurman has assembled a groundbreaking volume filled with fresh perspectives and revealing insights. If you want to understand America’s recent debacles in Iraq and Afghanistan, Hearts and Minds is essential reading.”
—Nick Turse, author of Kill Anything That Moves: The Real American War in Vietnam

"Essential reading for anyone who wants to see beyond the illusions about counterinsurgency warfare that the U.S. and British governments and media have sold their people. These histories show that, despite decades of occupations and well-funded and well-lauded strategic thinking, the hearts and minds of the occupied have remained beyond their militaries’ ken and control."
—Catherine Lutz, author of The Bases of Empire and a contributor to The Counter-Counterinsurgency Manual

"With America creeping toward military intervention in the Syrian civil war, Hannah Gurman’s volume comes at an opportune time. While generals offer up moralistic bromides about protecting foreign populations at the barrel of an American gun, Hearts and Minds lays bare the brutal and destructive truth behind American military activism in the world."
—Colonel Gian Gentile

Important book for scholars of counterinsurgency warfare
By Nicholas Lloyd
An interesting collection of opinions on various conflicts of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, this books seeks to question the popular consensus of counterinsurgency theory. Important reading for all contemporary scholars of warfare.

By Ross Caputi
Military doctrine and theory often exists as an isolated discourse that only experts, specialists, and veterans have access to. Hearts and Minds: A people's History of Counterinsurgency opens up the theory and doctrine of counterinsurgency to outside critique and makes it accessible to those not familiarized with the jargon-filled discourse of military thinkers. In my mind, its most valuable contributions are: 1) making military theory and doctrine interdisciplinary, and 2) measuring the humanistic rhetoric of counterinsurgency against the history of how it has effected ordinary people. This book is a sorely needed intervention, especially as our country reengages militarily in Iraq with so poor a public understanding of our military history in that country.

A poorly edited and unprofessionally executed mess
By Roger FitzAlan
I purchased this book because the idea of a "people's history" of counterinsurgency is a noble one. COIN (military code for the counter-insurgency doctrine of separating the 'hearts and minds' of regular people from the rebels among them) has a checkered history in the U.S. We failed at counterinsurgency in Vietnam, seemingly left Iraq with a large question mark, and seem also to be failing in Afghanistan. It is high time we examine the reasons why we fail to win over foreign populations in our attempts to rebuild them during/after major war. Unfortunately, this collection of essays on the subject is a poorly edited and horrifically executed mess.
Gurman's premise is promising: fusing several pieces from several different kinds of scholars together, with the overarching theme of challenging General Petraeus's optimism over the re-introduction of COIN into American military practice. While I was puzzled with her assertion that there is a "grand narrative" (going beyond military brass) about successful American counter-insurgency that she needs to challenge (Was anyone in late 2013, when this book was published, really arguing that our counterinsurgency in Afghanistan had been successful?), I was encouraged at the breadth and diversity of the examples the book would use. Unfortunately, my optimism went off the rails pretty quickly.
The essays were either not intended for this project originally, and thus poorly edited for this 'history,' or many of them were poorly conceived or poorly written. The first entry on British counterinsurgency in Malaya lacks any historical context to the setting whatsoever. A general knowledge of Malaya's demographics, history during World War Two that led to tension with British colonial authorities, and economic situation is assumed or simply not explained. The author also fails to link British Malayan policy with later American policy. Joaquin Chavez's essay takes twenty pages before explicitly linking any American policy with the brutality of El Salvador's military government. Gurman refers to the "National Liberation Front" (the proper name for what was popularly known in America as the Viet Cong) almost exclusively, without explaining that they and the Viet Cong are the same. I would interpret this as a principled (if explanation-worthy) attempt to call this group by the name they prefer, except she later uses the terms "VC" and Viet Cong, also without explanation. Gurman refers to "My Lai" (a gruesome massacre perpetrated by American soldiers) multiple times without context or explanation. It's just assumed that the reader knows. "Iraq: Part 1" is pseudo-journalistic with dramatic literary introductions to its sub-chapters. The piece on the Filipino Huk women is ridiculous: full of metaphoric tripe about women's bodies and gender sterotyping. The author sees fit to mention as an afterthought that the Huks were crushed and the American counterinsurgency was a success. I can relate to concerns about ethnocentric stereotyping and sexism, but that is not why I bought this book, nor does it serve the stated purpose of the book. This piece should have been left in the files of the academic gender studies convention from which it was undoubtedly unearthed. For each essay to truly serve the book's stated premise, it must answer these questions: How does this disprove that American counterinsurgency can accomplish our national foreign policy goals? Why does American counterinsurgency fail? For too much of the writing in "Hearts and Minds," the connections to the theme of the collection and its prospective reader are tenuous and lack the context necessary to truly educate the reader.
The scholarship is unprofessional as well. There are numerous typos, even in photo captions (really?), and although those are inevitable in large works, I expect better from individual scholarly articles. The problems run far deeper than the surface. Mr. Chavez cites "American CIA counterinsurgency doctrine" more than once in reference to dictators in El Salvador over the course of three decades, without bothering to prove it. Was the CIA involved, or is Mr. Chavez just implying that the dictators learned their worst tricks from watching American policy? If so, what policy in particular? Sources, please. Sources: the end notes and sourcing of the pieces in this book are confusing and (deliberately?) hard to penetrate. One author makes four or five completely different assertions in one paragraph, and ends the paragraph with an end note. In the corresponding note at the back, three or four different works are haphazardly listed, with wide page ranges. Another directly quotes American overseer of Iraq, L. Paul Bremer, in a suspiciously controversial way, and the citation leads the reader to an entire book by Cockburn, with no specific page number. Direct quotes should always be linked to a specific page. It's hard not to imagine this omission as deliberate. If so, why? Multiple examples are given of incidents in which Iraqi "protestors" are "shot down in the street." The word 'protestor' evokes first amendment-style assembly and demonstration. Check the citations and you'll see that most of them actually refer to violent rioting: a very different animal indeed. A single 'protestor' killed during a violent riot in a large and dangerous city like Baghdad is hardly an indictment of American military behavior. It might even be the opposite.
The unprofessionalism doesn't stop there. Communism looms large in the early pieces, and is often cryptically presented. Government "crackdowns" against communists are often portrayed (without a hint of irony) as repression against "students," "teachers," "intellectuals," or "democratic reform." This smacks of a manipulative game being played with the reader. Repression is never a good "look," but when we step outside of ourselves, can we truly mention these "crackdowns" without noting the greater historical context, which is that communist revolts had produced some of the most brutal, repressive, and murderous regimes at that time? Is anyone suggesting that given the nightmare of Stalin's Russia and Mao's China, no one at the time had a right to be paranoid about communist power? Perhaps not, but this context should be addressed. In discussing Bremer's attempt to crush the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's armed group, the Iraq pieces cite Muqtada's popularity with his religious compatriots, and his security efforts in his neighborhood, but ignore the fact that he was wanted for ordering the murder of a prominent rival cleric. Why is this? It can be difficult not to perceive an anti-American axe to grind running through the essays in this book, to which scholarly professionalism is taking a back seat. This is disheartening, especially given how hard it is to find truly professional writing on American affairs. There are kernels of real insight, including the "softer counterinsurgency" late in our involvement in Vietnam that actually produced more bloodshed and cruelty than the "harder" one, and the idiocy of American night raids in Afghanistan that offend Afghans on a far deeper cultural level than most of us understand. These bright spots are too few and far between to save this book, however.
I expect a higher standard to be upheld, academia. This is not how we learned to write history as undergraduates, from "the people's" perspective or otherwise.

Helpful and Uplifting

My son gave us this book as a gift and I was sure I didn't need it. Then I picked it up and got hooked. It's not your typical book. It is made up of hundreds of tips, stories and advice from many other "normal" people who have been through this same stage of life.

This book is special because it's readable, is not focused on "golden years," but the next vibrant stage in our lives, and it's practical. I walked away from a quick read with many good ideas, approaches to consider and tricks to try. It was a great gift and is an excellent book.

Looking ahead -- and back
By R. Post
"How to LOVE Your Retirement" is the kind of self-help book I can really enjoy. Divided into topics such as timing, finances, health issues, selection of domicile, hobbies, and adjustments at home, it is a series of vignettes, from one-liners to paragraphs, submitted by those in the business of retirement -- the retirees, themselves. The book's success is a product of the personal quality of those thoughts, many funny, some cautionary, but all insightful and enjoyable to browse. It gives those of us in retirement good ideas to mull over, and for the pre-retirement folk it offers inspiration.

Not Just for Boomers--for late bloomers, too! Stimulating!
By A Customer
This lively book will rev up the creative energy of anyone who wants to do "something else." The best of the "How to Survive" series, it's grounded by interviews with hundreds of folks who probably could not qualify to author a "How I Failed Retirement" article like the one published in "Fortune" magazine by former Chrysler CEO, Lee Iacocca. I can attest that "How to Love Your Retirement" can kick-start creation of an exciting retirement plan. I pressed this book on my attorney husband, 72, who had expected to follow in his father's footsteps and maintain a vigorous practice until he was 93. Seriously. Nonetheless, he has been quietly musing about retiring from complex criminal defense to do "something else." Major hurdle? Could he find anything equally engaging that did not include solving other people's very big problems. He found "How to Love Your Retirement" fun to read and loaded with solid, specific information, ideas and inspired advice, including timing, new work, money, travel, domestic adjustments, moving, new activities, and staying in shape. This book energized and focused his plans for himself-- and us.

Shopping and F***ing is...
Falling in love with your best friend - if you can get the right mix of Es and whizz...
Passion buried beneath layers of bubble and wrap and cellophane
A world where microwaves are the only source of heat
A place where Shopping is sexy and F***ing is a job...
And if you killed someone what would it feel like? Or maybe there are no feelings left...
Shopping and F***ing is a witty and shocking look at a corrosive disposable world whose values have been determined by a disinherited generation.

absolutely extraordinary play
By Derrick Jensen
I read this play, and then recently saw the version put on by Vortex, in Austin, TX, directed by Barry Pineo. The play is absolutely extraordinary. I couldn't stop crying through the next to last scene. It's an extremely powerful indictment of the emptiness of modern culture. A must see.

This is a funny, funny, funny, (did I mention funny) book.
By A Customer
The title was a little frightening, and not exactly recommended reading for grandma and the kids. Ravenhill presents a very warped and funny reality that we all live in and never wish to admitt to. Even to ourselves. Very funny.

House of Secrets: Battle of the Beasts (House of Secrets series Book 2), by Chris Columbus, Ned Vizzini

The sequel to the New York Times bestselling House of Secrets—hailed by J. K. Rowling as "a breakneck, jam-packed roller coaster of an adventure"—this second installment by Hollywood director Chris Columbus (of Harry Potter fame) and bestselling author Ned Vizzini (It's Kind of a Funny Story) is full of even more explosive twists and turns.

Since the siblings' last adventure, life in the Walker household is much improved—the family is rich and the Wind Witch is banished. But no Walker will be safe until she is found. Summoning her to San Francisco brings all the danger that comes with her, and puts the Walkers in the crosshairs of a mysterious journey through Denver Kristoff's books. As the Walkers travel from ancient Rome to World War II to Tibet, they are tested in ways that cut deeper than before—by Denver Kristoff, the Wind Witch, and one another.

Fantasy fiction fans who enjoy Rick Riordan will find much to love in this thrilling and action-packed novel.

Amazon.com Review

Behind the Scenes of House of Secrets: Battle of the Beasts By Chris Columbus & Ned Vizzini, illustrated by Greg Call

The evolution of Fat Jagger. Fat Jagger went through many revisions—He needed to look more consistent with the way he did in House of Secrets, but he also needed to have the correct number of figures in his hand. The right version is the final one.

The monks of Batan Chekrat cast shadows on the wall of the monastery, showing the Walker siblings their powers. Chris and Ned first saw the sketch on the left and liked it, but they liked the composition better in the middle sketch. The right version is the final one.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4–8—The action-packed adventures of the Walker siblings ramp up in this sequel. This time, the family travels to Ancient Rome, battles Nazis during World War II, and treks through the Himalayas.

Very appropriate for the age group and it'll teach them quite a bit if you can get them to keep reading
By Rob Slaven
Firstly and as usual I received this book for free in exchange for a review. Despite that kind consideration I give my scrupulously honest opinions below.

To begin, this is a children's book so I judge by different criteria than I would an adult novel. The first point of judgment, and one that has been known to blow a book out of the water by itself, is the presence of inappropriate content for children. I have absolutely no tolerance for sex, drugs and other such topics in kid's books. This book is safe on that account though it does have quite a bit of violence. It's nothing profoundly graphic but it will get young readers attention and might arouse a question or two.

The second criterion is basically an answer to the question of whether the reader will learn anything or gain anything positive from the book. In this case, the book scores pretty highly. This is a rather broad romp through history and the author isn't afraid to throw out solid historical terms from Roman times through the P-51 mustang. These factoids are woven very skillfully through the narrative in such a way that the little ones might not actually be aware they're learning much of anything. So in this case the book is likely to cause more than a few questions and Wikipedia searches. I'm forty years old and I ended up doing some searches of my own throughout the course of the book so kids will get plenty of new tidbits.

Lastly, I ponder whether kids will enjoy the book. Here's where I think the book may have problems. It is a wild and unpredictable ride to be sure but at times it's just utterly preposterous and openly defiant of logic. In general I'm OK with some of that, especially for a book aimed at very young children, but the reading level of this feels like it's more in the 10-13 range and that's the age where children start to question plausibility, when those exclamations of "cool!" started turning into "what?!" instead. To put is simply, I think the kids who can read it won't buy into it and the kids who are young enough to buy into it can't read it.

In summary, this is a solid "maybe" in my book. It's great on many points but the last third of the book just wobbles too violently and I think readers will get lost in it. You'll need to be the judge of just how much your kids will tolerate wacky madcap zaniness in their magical adventure novels and make your decision from there.

A Great Sequel
By Dayla F.M.
I received a copy via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review!

Battle of the Beasts is the sequel to the middle grade novel, House of Secrets, written by Chris Columbus and the late Ned Vizzini. Though I entered this book with a few doubts, I ended up liking it a lot more than its predecessor. The action was more fluid and the characters were more realistic (with a few exceptions). I also felt like the pacing was a lot better, making it a much faster read--and if you look at the print edition of this book, it's not a little book. More addicting, more exciting, and more gruesome, Battle of the Beasts serves up an awesome adventure.

One of the main issues I had with the previous installment in this series was how immature the narrating felt. I'm one of those readers that reads whatever age group of fiction that I want to, but reading House of Secrets was tough because it felt so young (despite the content). Imagine my surprise when I began reading Battle of the Beasts and seeing a much more mature narrator. I know that some time passed since the last adventure the Walker kids had, but it had only been a few weeks, so I attribute it to a better writing style. I felt like the narrating in this one was more welcoming for an older audience.
I also liked the Walkers a lot more this time around. The character growth was a lot greater in this one for the two older children, Cordelia and Bren. I love the idea of this book teaching kids how some of their selfish choices can not only affect the people around them, but also the children themselves.

The one character that was slightly disappointing was Eleanor. Other than the fact that the name Eleanor is old-fashioned and often alludes to a person full of wisdom, this character is only eight years-old. A reviewer of the first book stated that it seemed a bit unrealistic that a child with dyslexia could nearly read a full adult novel on her own, and I have to agree. In the short time between the first book and the second book, Eleanor has become a much better reader and though this is a fantastic boost of self-esteem for other children in similar situations when it comes to reading, it's also unrealistic. Plus, there were instances where she acted like a mini adult in Battle of the Beasts, but then regressed to acting like a child again. This discontinuity made Eleanor a bit intolerable at times.

If it weren’t for the gore and slightly disturbing cinematic moments, this could almost be read as a hallmark movie book adaptation. Especially when the children share their love and teach each other life lessons through mistakes and dangerous situations.

I would recommend this one to kids who are on the cusp of teenage-hood. The descriptions and situations in this installment are a lot darker than the first novel, making it a bit too old for the 9-12 age group. If you like adventure, quirky characters, and a story that doesn't revolve around romance, then you'll enjoy this one!

Much better than the first book
By Kayla's Reads and Reviews
If you've been following my reviews for a few years, you know that I absolutely hated the first House of Secrets book. There were very few redeeming qualities in it. At first, I was very iffy about whether I wanted to continue the series or not. When I got a chance to read the second book on Edelweiss, I figured that I didn't have much else to read, so I would give it a try. I'm so glad I did.

Battle of the Beasts was a welcome change from the first House of Secrets book. The character's seemed like they had a lot of character development that the reader didn't get to see between the first and second books. They were more mature, which made reading the book a lot more enjoyable. I didn't want to pull my hair out at some of the things that they did. I also loved that the author brought back some of the minor characters. I wasn't expecting that at all, and it was a pleasant surprise.

The plot was action packed. There was never a dull moment. At times, it was so tense that I wanted to jump up and down and tell at the characters that they could survive this, and that's a feeling that I've only ever gotten a few times while reading. It comes with the feeling that you know you're reading a really good book. My favorite scene was the one with the pirates. It was action packed and kept me on the edge of my seat. I had no idea what was going to happen.

Battle of the Beasts ends on a surprising cliffhanger. I was not expecting it at all. It should be interesting to see where the story goes from here. I will definitely be reading the final book in the trilogy as soon as it is released. Even though I was hesitant in the beginning, I'm so glad I continued on with this trilogy.
