A Garden of Marvels: How We Discovered that Flowers Have Sex, Leaves Eat Air, and Other Secrets of Plants, by Ruth Kassinger

In the tradition of The Botany of Desire and Wicked Plants, a witty and engaging history of the first botanists interwoven with stories of today’s extraordinary plants found in the garden and the lab.

In Paradise Under Glass, Ruth Kassinger recounted with grace and humor her journey from brown thumb to green, sharing lessons she learned from building a home conservatory in the wake of a devastating personal crisis.

In A Garden of Marvels, she extends the story. Frustrated by plants that fail to thrive, she sets out to understand the basics of botany in order to become a better gardener. She retraces the progress of the first botanists who banished myths and misunderstandings and discovered that flowers have sex, leaves eat air, roots choose their food, and hormones make morning glories climb fence posts. She also visits modern gardens, farms, and labs to discover the science behind extraordinary plants like one-ton pumpkins, a truly black petunia, a biofuel grass that grows twelve feet tall, and the world's only photosynthesizing animal. Transferring her insights to her own garden, she nurtures a "cocktail" tree that bears five kinds of fruit, cures a Buddha's Hand plant with beneficial fungi, and gets a tree to text her when it's thirsty.

Intertwining personal anecdote, accessible science, and untold history, the ever-engaging author takes us on an eye-opening journey into her garden—and yours.

From Booklist
Whether debunking the myth of the “vegetable lamb” borametz plant or cooing over the rippling lettuce-like appearance of the green sea slug, Kassinger proves that it truly is a jungle out there. A self-taught, infectiously enthusiastic home gardener, Kassinger nevertheless realized that a more formal understanding of botany would be necessary if she were to prevent turning her horticultural hits into misses. But who said such a pursuit had to be boring? There were all manner of great stories hidden in the cabbage patch, from the daredevil biographies of botanists of yore to the mysterious manifestations of plant sex. An intrepid journalist and indefatigable plants woman, Kassinger ferrets out the most entertaining and educational aspects of plant science with a researcher’s fervor and a collector’s zeal. From instructions on how to grow a giant pumpkin and then convert it into a regatta-worthy sailing vessel (along with discovering why someone would even want to), Kassinger has a knack for uncovering horticulture’s quirky side. --Carol Haggas

From the Back Cover

"This book was born of a murder, a murder I committed," Ruth Kassinger begins. The victim was a beloved kumquat tree that she decided to prune. The result? The tree turned brittle and brown. Why did the kumquat die when a rose bush and a crape myrtle similarly clipped had thrived? While she knew the basic rules of caring for indoor plants, Kassinger realized that she understood very little about plant physiology—how roots, stems, leaves, and flowers actually function. Determined not to repeat her failure, she set out to learn the fundamentals of botany in order to become a better gardener. A Garden of Marvels is the story of her wise and enchanting odyssey to discover the secret life of plants.

Kassinger retraces the progress of the first botanists, including Charles Darwin, who banished myths and misunderstandings and discovered that flowers have sex, leaves eat air, roots choose their food, and hormones make morning glories climb fence posts. She goes out into the world as well, visiting modern gardens, farms, and labs to discover the science behind extraordinary plants like one-ton pumpkins, truly black petunias, ferns that eat the arsenic in contaminated soil, biofuel grass that grows twelve feet tall, and the world's only photosynthesizing animal. Kassinger also introduces us to modern scientific research that offers hope for combatting climate change and alleviating world hunger. She then transfers her insights to her own garden.

Intertwining personal anecdotes, accessible science, and little-known history, A Garden of Marvels takes us on an eye-opening journey into Kassinger's garden—and yours—offering us a new appreciation of this exquisite gift of nature.

Wonderful writing and an informationally exciting book.
By Hvst125
This was one of the most engaging books I have read in a LONG time! Truth be told, I found it much more interesting that most so-called 'suspense novels'. I will admit to a certain fascination with plants and especially, the genomics of plants, but to find an author who can make a botany course literally sing is wonderful. I am in awe!

Botany!
By J. Hartley
Ruth Kassinger has done a great job of exploring the mysterious internal workings of plants in a way that is both engaging and entertaining.

I received it as a gift from my local library and was skeptical at first as to how much I'd get out of it. I'm an educator for a public garden, so I rather arrogantly assumed most of what I would find here would be old news to me. I can, after all, correctly use words like xylem and phloem in a sentence; if this book is the laymen's first peek into botany, I fully expected to be bored.

I was clearly due for a serious humbling, which is probably obvious. Ms. Kassinger was just the woman for the job. She hooked me immediately with an exploration of botanical myths and an overview of why botany -- which mankind has at least understood to be fundamental to all life on some level for centuries -- went largely misunderstood and under-explored for a long time. She weaves wonderful personal accounts in and out of her exploration of plant tissues and their workings, and touches on issues that may not have yet fully hit the public consciousness -- like the use of perennial crops instead of annuals -- but should and hopefully will very soon.

I highly recommend this book to everyone -- even if it means I'm no longer the only one in the room who knows the difference between collenchyma and sclerenchyma and I lose my Look-How-Plant-Smart-I-Am edge in cocktail party smalltalk. This was a fun read, full of great stories and information worth thinking about.

Fun book to read
By D.Landon.Felix
I'm a landscape architect student who was looking for a book to read why taking a plant identification course. I'd saved a sample of this book after reading a New York Times book review a year or more ago. The time was right so I downloaded and read it. Kissinger kept me interested in plants and their scientific history; thus, even keeping my class more interesting. She sometimes rambles on about her life history in trying to introduce some concepts - I skipped these chapters, but otherwise the book is very easy to read while packed with a lot of information I didn't know. If you're a botanist or a plant geek, this book isn't for you (too basic), but if you're looking to start increasing you knowledge of plants, this is a decent place to start.

Apollo and the Battle of the Birds

CHAPTER ONE Strange Tracks
Ready, set, grow!”

Ten-year-old Demeter threw one magical glittering, oval-shaped yellow seed into the air. It landed in a field of brown dirt and withered weeds.

Suddenly the field began to glow and glimmer. Rows of golden wheat sprang up next to rows of green, leafy vegetables and trees bearing figs and apples.

Six other Olympians, who were all her same age, stood behind her and watched with wide eyes. They had seen Demeter do this before, but it was still amazing every time.

Blond, blue-eyed Apollo strummed on his lyre, singing:

“A field that once was brown and lean

Is now so healthy and so green!”

Hestia’s brown eyes sparkled, and she clapped her hands together. “Demeter, it’s beautiful!”

Demeter smiled, pleased, and blushed a little.

Behind them the residents of the small village began to clap and cheer. Young children ran into the field, staring at the plants in wonder.

The village elder, a small, gray-haired woman, approached the Olympian god’s young leader, Zeus. She grabbed his hands in her strong grip.

“Thank you,” she said, her pale eyes glistening with tears of joy. “We have suffered greatly since that horrible Titan Hyperion burned our fields so we could not grow crops. But you have brought us rain and water, and now this. For the first time in many days, I feel hopeful that we will survive. You are our hero.”

Zeus grinned. “Well, it wasn’t just me. It was all of us working together.” He nodded toward the other Olympians. “And now Demeter’s Magic Seeds are growing new crops.”

Poseidon stepped over to Zeus and slung an arm around his shoulders. He waved the long-handled, three-pronged golden trident he’d gotten when he’d discovered he was god of the sea. “And my boltbrain bro and I combined our powers to whip up a nice rainy storm to fill your wells. ‘Zap! Bam! Sizzle!’ ”

“Who are you calling ‘boltbrain,’ Fishlips?” Zeus demanded with a grin.

Laughing, Poseidon lunged toward him with the trident, mock-fighting. Zeus held up Bolt, the magical lightning bolt he carried.

“Bolt, large!” Zeus commanded. Instantly it sprang from dagger-size to the size of Zeus. Zing! Zeus pretended to fend Poseidon off with it.

Hera stepped up to them, her blue eyes snapping with annoyance as she flipped her long blond hair back over her shoulder. “Those are magical objects, not toys,” she scolded. Then she turned to Poseidon. “And since when do you call Zeus ‘bro’?” she asked.

“Since I found out we were brothers, duh,” Poseidon said, beginning to twirl his trident. “We’re almost like twins.”

Zeus and Poseidon did look alike, both with the same wavy hair, but Zeus’s eyes were the color of the sky he commanded, and Poseidon’s were turquoise, like the sea.

Humpf. “Well, you better not start calling me ‘sis,’ ” Hera warned.

Just two weeks before, six of the Olympians—Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Hades, Hestia, and Demeter—had learned that they all had the same mother. Her name was Rhea and they hadn’t seen her since they were born. Zeus had been raised away from the others by a nymph, a goat, and a bee. And suddenly discovering he had brothers and sisters had been a delicious feeling.

“You can call me ‘bro’ all you want, Bro,” Zeus told Poseidon.

The village elder spread her arms wide and spoke again. “We thank all of you! Please take anything you need for your journey from our fields. We have some bread and cheese we can give you too. Is there anything else you might need?”

Demeter looked down at her tunic, which was torn and stained after their recent encounter with a giant beanstalk. The other Olympians were looking pretty ragged too after weeks on the road.

“Um, do you guys have any spare clothes?” she asked.

The woman nodded. “Of course. I’m sure we can find something for each of you.”

“Thanks,” Zeus said. “I think we’re all set, then. Clothes, food, and weapons.”

Zeus shaded his eyes against the sun. In the distance a flock of birds slowly flew in a circle. When the sun hit them, they sparkled. Weird. He had been seeing them for days. Those sparkly birds had him a little worried.

At the word “weapons” some of the villagers came closer. “ ‘Weapons’? Why would you need weapons?” asked one grizzled farmer.

“King Cronus doesn’t exactly like the fact that we’re going around fixing what his giant Titan buddies are messing up around the Earth,” Zeus replied. “His Crony soldiers are always after us, and then we usually end up running into monsters, and, well . . . we need weapons to fight them and protect ourselves. Some of us have magical objects that can be used in fights. But not all of us do.”

Hera folded her arms across her chest and glared at Zeus when he said this. She was one of the Olympians without a magical object. Apollo didn’t have one either, but he didn’t seem to mind, the way she did. At the moment he was happily strumming his lyre, singing a tune while some of the village children danced.

The old man nodded. “King Cronus is no friend to anyone here. He and his henchmen Cronies are always stomping on our fields and stealing whatever they like from us. Not to mention trying to take over the world.”

Hades stuck out one arm and pulled back his other, pretending to cock a bow and then shoot an arrow from it. “Not if we can help it! If we run into those Cronies, I can put on my helmet, turn invisible, and shoot at our enemies with my bow and arrows. They’ll never know what hit them!”

“It’s lucky we found those bows and arrows in that abandoned hunting cabin,” Hera said, glaring at Zeus, “seeing as not all of us are lucky enough to have magical objects of our own! Now at least all of us have weapons, even if they aren’t magical.”

“Here is something you should know: I am excellent with a bow,” Apollo said, using rhyme-speak, as he often did.

“I just hope we won’t have to use them,” Demeter added.

The villagers scattered to gather cheese and bread while the Olympians happily filled the packs they were given with fruit and vegetables from the field. Before long they were back on the road to the town of Corinth, dressed in new tunics and carrying packs of food.

“Hey,” Poseidon complained, glancing at Apollo as they walked along, “how come I didn’t get the blue tunic, instead of this orange one? I’m the ruler of the sea, after all. And blue is the color of the sea.”

“It’s true that you are ruler of the sea, but this blue tunic fits great on me,” Apollo replied.

“Stop complaining and just be glad that we haven’t seen a sign of the Cronies in days,” Hades said to Poseidon.

“Maybe we’ve lost them,” said Demeter.

“I wouldn’t be so sure,” Hera said darkly. “They always seem to turn up, no matter how hard we try to throw them off our trail.”

“But we’re in the middle of nowhere,” Poseidon said, looking around. The path to Corinth was taking them across a wide, mountainous area. They tried to stick to the foothills, but there were steep climbs along the trail. “Why is Pythia sending us all the way to Lake Stymphalia to find a shield, anyway?”

“Stymphalia . . . ,” Apollo repeated. “I swear I’ve heard of that somewhere before. Stymphalia . . . Stymphalia . . .”

“It’s not just any shield. It’s an aegis,” Zeus reminded Poseidon, pronouncing it “EE-jiss.” “It must be super-special, or she wouldn’t make us go to all this trouble to find it.”

“It had better be,” Apollo said, his usually bright eyes growing dark. “I really wanted to go off on my own to find my twin sister, Artemis, but I promised Pythia we’d all stick together.”

Pythia, the Oracle of Delphi, had been sending the Olympians on quests ever since they’d gotten together. The guests had three goals: to find more Olympians; to gather magical objects; and finally, to defeat the evil King Cronus. When they last saw Pythia, she told them to win the aegis through battle.

“Hera, are we still on course?” Zeus asked.

Hera looked at the stone amulet that hung around her neck. It was named Chip and belonged to Zeus. He’d gotten it in Delphi when he’d found Bolt, his magical object. He felt bad that Hera didn’t have her own object yet, so he let her wear Chip, an oval-shaped smooth, gray stone.

Chip was very useful. It could talk when it wanted to, in its own language (Chip Latin). Also, if you asked it a question, writing would appear to give you the answer. It even showed them maps sometimes.

“Which way to Lake Stymphalia, Chip?” Hera asked. Instantly a glowing arrow appeared on the surface of the stone, pointing straight ahead. She grinned. “Looks like we’re good.”

“If you call being hungry and tired and stuck in an orange tunic ‘good,’ then yes, we’re good,” Poseidon grumbled.

They walked on for a while longer, crossing a desertlike plain with mountains rising all around. But as they got closer to Corinth, the land was greener, with thick forest all surrounding them. The ground under their feet was damp and muddy.

Suddenly Hera stopped walking. “That’s a strange track,” she said, kneeling to stare at the ground. “It looks like a human foot. But there’s only one. See? And there’s another track a few feet ahead.”

“A few feet? I thought you said it was one foot,” Poseidon joked.

Feeds the ravenous book fever of my granddaughter
By Jennifer J. Mckinney
I let my 11 year old granddaughter buy books on my account so I see everything she reads. These books have been her favorites but she gets mad when she has to wait for the next in the series to come out, lol. When kids are reading it is very necessary to feed their habit so, yes, I love these books.

Great series
By Jennifer G
These books are great for early readers. They are usually only a little over 100 pages. They have a basis in Greek mythology but do create a new storyline. Each book a new hero is added. They are great stories and fun to read. Highly recommend.

Renewable: The World-Changing Power of Alternative Energy, by Jeremy Shere

Where does the energy we use come from? It's absolutely vital to every single thing we do every day, but for most people, it is utterly invisible. Flick a switch and the lights go on. It might as well be magic.

Science writer Jeremy Shere shows us in Renewable: The World-Changing Power of Alternative Energy that energy is anything but magical. Producing it in fossil fuel form is a dirty, expensive—but also hugely profitable— enterprise, with enormous but largely hidden costs to the entire planet. The cold, hard fact is that at some point we will have wrung the planet dry of easily accessible sources of fossil fuel. And when that time comes, humankind will have no choice but to turn—or, more accurately, return—to other, cleaner, renewable energy sources. What will those sources be? How far have we come to realizing the technologies that will make these sources available?

To find the answers, Shere began his journey with a tour of a traditional coal-fueled power plant in his home state of Indiana. He then continued on, traveling from coast to coast as he spoke to scientists, scholars and innovators. He immersed himself in the green energy world: visiting a solar farm at Denver's airport, attending the Wind Power Expo and a wind farm tour in Texas, investigating turbines deep in New York City's East River, and much more.

Arranged in five parts—Green Gas, Sun, Wind, Earth, and Water—Renewable tells the stories of the most interesting and promising types of renewable energy: namely, biofuel, solar, wind, geothermal, and hydropower. But unlike many books about alternative energy, Renewable is not obsessed with megawatts and tips for building home solar panels. Instead, Shere digs into the rich, surprisingly long histories of these technologies, bringing to life the pioneering scientists, inventors, and visionaries who blazed the way for solar, wind, hydro, and other forms of renewable power, and unearthing the curious involvement of great thinkers like Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and Nicola Tesla.
We are at an important crossroads in the history of renewable technologies. The possibilities are endless and enticing, and it has become increasingly clear that renewable energy is the way of the future. In Renewable, Jeremy Shere's natural curiosity and serious research come together in an entertaining and informative guide to where renewable energy has been, where it is today, and where it's heading.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In this rigorous, impassioned, and nonpartisan study, science writer Shere blends first-person reportage and anecdotal history, bringing the state of renewable energy vibrantly alive. A quick glimpse of Henry Ford and Thomas Edison riding together in a Model T through the Florida Everglades in search of land to grow ethanol-producing crops gives way to Shere, standing in the pouring rain, looking over a field of swaying Chinese silver grass—the best choice to replace corn as the basis for ethanol. A description of elegantly attired British colonialists sipping champagne and marveling excitedly at a solar-powered irrigation system in early 20th-century Egypt transitions to an account of researchers at Purdue University and MIT who are making unprecedented advances in solar energy efficiency using nanotechnology. Unfailingly positive, never speculating about entrenched interests, profit margins, or global greed, the stories nevertheless generate provocative contrasts. The fascination, awe, and excitement with which our forbearers viewed advances in alternative energy contrasts markedly with the skepticism, cynicism, and outright hostility that colors the conversation today. While the debate over renewable energy remains mired in politics, Shere's approach provides a refreshingly optimistic outlook, grounded, but not suffocating, in technical detail, and confirming that, while the relatively low price of oil keeps advances on the margins, the work necessary to wean ourselves off fossil fuels is ongoing. From Booklist
With the emerging worldwide consensus that humanity needs to reduce greenhouse gases and prepare for the depletion of oil reserves, more and more books are appearing on alternative-energy schemes. Most of them present how-to or where-and-when approaches. In a change of focus, this lively and informative overview by prolific radio science reporter Shere looks at green energy from another angle, highlighting its surprising history, dynamic contemporary development, and looming probable future. Readers may be astonished to learn, for instance, that solar power devices have been around for almost a century and that the earth’s abundant hot rocks, if properly tapped, could easily supply all the world’s energy needs. Beyond interesting facts, however, Shere also gives an in-depth report on each major renewable energy source, including green gas, solar, wind, water, and geothermal, demonstrating how engineers are overcoming the limitations of each. In contrast to many of alternative energy’s status quo–supporting critics, Shere provides many sound reasons for optimism about a future in which power generation causes minimal damage to the environment. --Carl Hays

Review

“A bright, accessible account of renewable energy and its role in our lives.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“A refreshing yet serious look at alternative energy sources...[Shere] invites readers to tag along on his journey of discovery as he visits particular locales, interviews today's experts, and tours renewable energy facilities...Shere does all this without getting bogged down in scientific details an djargon. Shere's use of abundant current and historical anecdotes provides general readers with a clearer picture of renewable energy technologies than a more scholarly treatise would. recommended for all readers interested in a deeper understanding of this subject.” ―Library Journal

Alternative review
By Ken Kardash
As someone with no connection to or bias regarding the author, I wondered why my rating differs from the previous, uniformly glowing reviews. But then I noticed that in every case of the preceding five-star ratings, this is the only book to be reviewed by the contributor. Just saying.

If you’re looking for a superficial overview of the historical context for alternatives fossil fuel, this will be fine. But be warned that rather than focusing on the current state of alternative energy technologies, a large part of each chapter deals with their historical background. I admit that these stories were often interesting, but I don’t think it’s what most readers would expect form the title and description. For example, most people curious about the current state of solar power are probably expecting to read about silicon panels, not Leonardo da Vinci’s mirror designs.

Another consistent feature I found distracting was the embedding of reporting into personal context. This seems to be a hallmark of the current crop of popular science writing. But I’m not really interested in how much snow was on the ground where he was driving, or what his kids were doing in the back seat. Do we really need to know that the main reason he wrote the book was as an excuse to see wind turbines up close, or that he finds geothermal energy boring? Maybe he finds fuel cell technology boring, too. This would explain why a book on alternative energy sources does not address this subject, even in passing. And after supposedly spending three years researching such an admittedly complex field, why could he not throw in at least a selective bibliography?

For a relatively short review, it is remarkably repetitive between and within chapters. In one sense, this is effective. Almost every energy modality discussed ends with a real-world demonstration of how progress is impossible without committed government support. But then there is the thrumming insistence, as if it were an epiphany, that the world will eventually run out of oil. We get it. Just like the petroleum industry, those interested in this subject will be forced to dig a little deeper.

A great book on alternative energy
By Eugene Katz
RENEWABLE, THE WORLD CHANGING POWER OF ALTERNATIVE ENERGY, by Jeremy Shere is a fascinating book dealing with both the history and current efforts at developing various alternative energy sources. As soon as I got the book I sat down to read it and in one night I finished about 2/3 of it. I really enjoyed it. It was readable, clear and the best thing about, I thought, was the way in which Shere described each renewable energy source in the form of stories about its originators as well as those who are working to develop those sources. The book covers green gas, sun, wind, earth and water sources and the efforts ongoing to bring renewable energy into the world’s energy future. I recommend the book to everyone interested in the need to find sustainable sources of energy to fuel the world into the future.

This was a reasonably good basic summary of the main renewable energy options
By Steven W. Robinson
This was a reasonably good basic summary of the main renewable energy options, but left me with a mixed reaction to the coverage of historical approaches to these technologies -- coverage that at times was interesting and at times seemed like filler. The interjection of personal accounts of writing the book also felt like filler; Shere would have better used these pages to focus on promising future advances leading to a stronger conclusion as to which are most likely to dominate our energy future.

Great Travel Guide
By Sally Michaels
This is now my husbands and my go to brand of travel guides when we travel. We first bought one when we went to Grand Cayman and when traveling back to the Caribbean we knew exactly what to get. We particularly like the dining aspect and how it rates them on price; not only do you know what you can budget for but you also know they type of food to expect. The sites the guide provides are definitely the hot spots, don;t be afraid to venture out on your own.
This guide is broken down by island depending on where you are traveling and offers the same breakdown per island. Overall this is a great travel companion for any traveler.

It's a good choice for a multi island travel guide
By Sasha
It's a good choice for a multi island travel guide. It is nicely organized with an island culture intro. Answers good questions about currency, time, transportation and more. As I am only treacle in to one island (New Providence) that is the only section I reviewed and I am pleased with it. Good selection of things to do ( free and of cost), beaches, places to stay, places to eat, etc. I'm glad I made the choice I did. Oh and it's small enough to slip in my purse for taking it out and about!

Typical Fodor's guide. It served its purpose, but I always find these to be repetitive and irritatingly written by multiple authors who have different writing styles. I did find a typo in this one too. That said, I did pick up several tips and locations that greatly enhanced our vacation. Keep in mind that the Bahamas is a huge collection of islands and this book covers all of them. If you're only visiting one island, you may only be interested in a few pages of this publication.

Black Horizon (Jack Swyteck Book 11), by James Grippando

In Black Horizon, a riveting and timely thriller drawn from tomorrow's headlines, New York Times bestselling author James Grippando brings back popular Miami criminal defense attorney Jack Swyteck in an international case involving a devastating oil spill that pits him against his most villainous adversaries yet.

Three summers after the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe, oil is again spewing into the ocean—from a drilling explosion in Cuban waters sixty miles off the Florida Keys, creating a politically complex and volatile situation. Representing an American woman whose Cuban husband was killed on the rig, Jack finds himself in dangerous waters when he discovers that his incendiary case may be lethally connected to his new wife Andi's undercover assignment for the FBI . . . and that the looming environmental catastrophe may have been no "accident" at all.

From Booklist
The eleventh Jack Swyteck novel opens with the attorney and his new wife, FBI agent Andi Henning, honeymooning in the Florida Keys. The honeymoon is cut short, though, by an offshore disaster: an oil-drilling platform in Cuban waters has exploded, pumping oil into the ocean. Almost immediately, Jack is asked to represent a woman whose husband died in the explosion in a wrongful-death suit against the platform’s owners (it’s owned by the Venezuelan government but was manufactured by a Chinese company). Meanwhile Andi is sent off on an undercover assignment. Jack knows only that it involves the Chinese, but it quickly turns out that Andi’s case could be closely connected to Jack’s own. With a story that’s ripped from the recent headlines (remember the 2010 BP oil spill?), this is a solid legal thriller that should appeal to the author’s fans. --David Pitt

“With a story that’s ripped from the recent headlines (remember the 2010 BP oil spill?), this is a solid legal thriller that should appeal to the author’s fans.” (Booklist on BLACK HORIZON)

“James Grippando is a master of the legal thriller.” (Robert K. Massie, New York Times bestselling author)

A briskly paced thriller…The complex plot points combined with the breezy narrative--not to mention the Florida Keys setting--make for a solid beach read that will no doubt leave longtime fans looking forward adventures of Jack Swyteck.” (Houston Chronicle on Black Horizon)

From the Back Cover

Three summers after the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe—the biggest man-made environmental disaster in history—oil is again spewing into the ocean, from a drilling explosion in Cuban waters just fifty miles away from the Florida Keys. The situation is politically complex, involving a state-run consortium tied to the Venezuelan, Chinese, and Russian governments, and highly volatile. The Cubans not only refuse offers of American assistance, but threaten to fire on "hostile" U.S. vessels that enter their waters.

Attorney Jack Swyteck and his new wife, Andie, an operative for the CIA, are honeymooning in the Keys when Andie is called away on an undercover assignment. Jack, too, is soon back at work—representing a client whose husband was on the rig. Though the spill occurred in foreign territory, the widow wants Jack to file a wrongful death suit in a U.S. court. Pursuing the unimaginably complicated case plunges Jack into a dangerous world filled with treacherous twists that lead him to a shocking realization . . . his case and Andie's assignment may be lethally connected.

Not one of Grippando's best
By Brian Baker
I'm not going to write a deep story synopsis here; you can get that on the book's Product Page.

I've enjoyed most of the Swytek books, but have to say that I don't think this is one of the best of the series.

In it, Grippando is trying to take on current political issues (a massive oil spill, the Cuban embargo, environmentalism, federal national security practice), a who-done-it, and the signature Swytek courtroom drama.

This is probably a good example of what happens when you try to force ten pounds of "stuff" into a five pound bag. It came across to me as frenetic yet unfocused. Is this a courtroom drama? A murder mystery? A political thriller? What?

Another problem, as others have noted, is that sidekick Theo - usually a wry character who provides the needed muscle to Swytek's brains - comes across as an annoyingly juvenile wiseacre, constantly cracking lame and childish jokes. I felt like I wanted to smack the back of his head and tell him to grow up.

The who-done-it part didn't work very well at all. The "surprise" ending wasn't so much a "surprise" as it was a cheat of the audience. For it to work properly, a "mystery" has to give you SOME clues during the story so that you can look back on what you've read, once you get to the denoument, and say to yourself, "Ah! That was clever! The clues were there all along, and I missed them!".

That certainly wasn't the case in this book. The big reveal came, and I was saying to myself: "What!?!? Where the heck did THAT come from?"

Anyway, kind of entertaining. I didn't regret reading it, but it certainly wasn't up to Grippando's usual par.

Three stars.

Gulf Oil Spill Interrupts a wedding
By plane
Grippando brings back Jack Swyteck his Miami based attorney, who in the book opening is marrying his longtime girlfriend Andie Henning. Andie is an undercover agent for the FBI and Jack has to accept the fact that much of what she does is confidential and he will not know about it. The two plan a honeymoon to Key West and settle in for days of romance and getting to know each other as man and wife. The getting to know includes the revelation that Andie is pregnant and expecting in about 8 months.
An unexpected glitch suddenly affects both Jack and Andie when an ocean going Cuban owned drilling rig explodes triggering an immense oil spill in the gulf of Mexico that wends it's way towards the Florida keys and up the coast from there. The rig is in Cuban waters and actually is a consortium between Cuba, Venezuela, China and Russia whose group prohibits the U.S. from bringing in equipment to contain the oil spill. The problem falls into both Jack and Andie's laps when the F.B.I. calls her back to work on what might be a terrorist plot to blow up the rig. At the same time Jack agrees to represent a girl whose fiance was on the rig working towards a solution to be allowed to leave Cuba and be with his sweetheart in the United States.
The author covers the activities of both Jack and Andie in their work on what could be the same problem. As always Grippando's knowledge of the intricacies of the law and his explanations of cause and effects in the action tied to these rules makes the action very real to the reader, and allows him to think of Jack as not superman, but a good, knowledgeable practitioner of the law. Andie's role in her portion of the events is in keeping with her image as a woman loving her job, doing it well, but aware of the dangers involved in working undercover. Grippando's books never cease to attract and keep his readers glued to the pages and anxiously awaiting the next novel from him

Black Horizon made me blue
By michael a. draper
Jack Swyteck is honeymooning in Key West when there is an offshore explosion. Soon, globs of sticky oil begin drifting to the Florida coast.

Swyteck is an attorney and is hired to represent a woman whose husband was killed in the explosion. Jack is thinking about suing for a wrongful death but wonders who he could sue since the incident happened in Cuban waters and the oil derrik is owned by a consortium made up of China, Russia, Cuba and Venezuela.

Jack investigates the explosion and is assisted by his sidekick Theo. The banter between these two characters makes up much of the story.

The central characters of Jack, Theo and Jack's wife, Andie, went about their business but their actions never caused me to have an overcoming desire to learn more.

Theo is constantly complaining and demanding Jack's attention, like a spoiled child. Andie is an undercover FBI agent, well described and as a potential new mother, she is interesting and deserving of the reader's empathy. The compassionate way that Jack treated her when she had a health issue was well described.

The novel was dry, mildly interesting but lacking suspense. I'm a fan of Grippando and always look forward to his books but this wasn't one of his better novels.

Emma: Lights! Camera! Cupcakes!

CHAPTER 1 The Topic of the Town
I love Fridays! Almost every Friday, my three best friends—Alexis, Mia, and Katie—and I have an official meeting and baking session for our Cupcake Club. Each week we try rotate where it takes place, so that makes it a little more interesting, and a lot of times we stretch it out into a sleepover too. It’s just fun and kind of relaxing to know I don’t have to worry about Friday plans. I’m always guaranteed to be chilling with my BFFs! It’s also pretty cool to have something to look forward to all week.

Some weeks we have very little business to cover, but this week we had a lot! Alexis ran the meeting as usual.

“First on the agenda is a cupcake competition–birthday party for Isabel Gormley in two weeks. She’d like two dozen unfrosted cupcakes; a mix of vanilla and chocolate—so half are chocolate cake and the other half are yellow cake. Then we’ll send the frosting on the side, vanilla and chocolate. They are going to have a contest so all the kids can ice and decorate the cupcakes themselves.”

“That is so cute!” cried Mia, lounging on my TV room sofa. “Wouldn’t she maybe like some fondant roses on a sheet? Or containers of toppings?”

It’s become almost boring for us to make basic cupcakes; we do it so rarely. We’ve made so many over-the-top cupcake designs in our day. Mia is very creative idea-wise, and Katie is great at execution. Alexis makes sure we charge properly for them. I’m good at promoting and networking to get us jobs.

“Actually, it would be cool to create a cupcake competition kit for parties. Maybe we could advertise that on our website!” I said.

Alexis tapped her pen with her teeth. “I agree. If we could get the pricing right, it might be worth offering it for a limited time to see how it does.” She made some notes in her book. She’s very strategic with how we spend our money, which is a good thing.

“Should we tint the vanilla frosting at least?” suggested Katie. “We can give them different colors, like pink or purple . . .?”

Alexis made some notes in her book. “I’ll e-mail Mrs. Gormley and ask her, and also I’ll see if she wants us to create the kit for them. The Gormleys are good clients. She’ll probably be up for it.”

I nodded. “What else is in the lineup?”

“We have the PTA meeting coming up, so let’s do a complimentary order with fliers or little cards with our contact info to hand out. Maybe two dozen minis, since the parents don’t eat much. Then”—Alexis consulted her notes—“we have a retirement party for Emma’s mom’s friend at work, another librarian. They’d like us to do something pretty. . . . There are your fondant roses, Mia! And that about wraps it up. Anything else?”

Katie nodded and held up a sheet of paper torn from a magazine. “I want to try this new pink-lemonade frosting. It’s supposed to be delicious, and it might be cute for a light, floral spring cupcake.”

Alexis noted it, and we all agreed. Then there was a pause, and Mia looked up with a devilish grin. “Can we just gossip now for a minute about the number-one topic in town?”

Alexis groaned and put her hands over her eyes. “When will it end?” she cried.

Katie and I grinned at each other. “Do you have a new scoop?” I asked Mia.

“No! I thought you might, of all people, since you’re so buddy-buddy with Romaine!”

The topic of the town was that Romaine Ford, our one and only homegrown superstar—model turned actress, singer, Oscar winner, and more—is premiering her new movie right here in Maple Grove in just a week! Already shopkeepers are offering premiere promotions and decorating their store windows like it’s the Academy Awards. It’s sort of annoying because everyone acts like they’re Romaine Ford’s best friend, or like she shops at their stores all the time, which they aren’t and she doesn’t. Even the local paper has been going around and interviewing people about her, who I’m sure don’t even know her, which drives me nuts.

I, on the other hand, do know Romaine Ford.

I don’t know her well, but we are almost what you might call friends. It’s kind of a long story, but I met her when I was modeling bridesmaid dresses at the store where she bought her wedding gown. Then my friends and I made cupcakes for her wedding shower, and she came to my talent show at camp. That was a pretty big deal. We haven’t stayed in touch or anything, but I know if we were walking past each other on the street and I said, “Hi, Romaine!” she’d say, “Hi, Emma!” back.

I’m sure I will have more information tomorrow since I’m working at The Special Day bridal salon, which I do every other weekend, modeling dresses and helping out. Tomorrow she’ll be coming in for a dress fitting with her bridesmaids, and I’ll be delivering the salon’s weekly cupcake order and staying on to help Mona, the owner of the store. The only thing is, as an employee, I’m always sworn to secrecy about brides (especially Romaine!) and their details. This can be frustrating and hard, since I’m so used to telling my friends everything. It’s just that I’m so dying to tell them I’m seeing Romaine tomorrow that I might burst! I looked down at my nails. If Alexis were to look at my face, she’d totally know I was hiding something.

Since our Cupcake business meeting was finished for the day, we moved into the kitchen to start baking, and our conversation continued as we ran down all the things we knew about Romaine Ford’s new movie. It’s a love story, set in the past, with a lot of other famous stars, all of whom are coming to the red carpet premiere at the theater where my friends and I usually hang out! It’s so insane! It’s like a dream to think these actors and actresses will be here, maybe even sitting in my usual favorite seat; seventh row from the front, second seat in on the left. There will be tons of press and other Hollywood bigwigs there, plus of course Romaine Ford’s handsome fiancé, the gorgeous Liam Carey, an actor and director who does all sorts of volunteer work in Africa in his spare time.

“We should try to go and watch them on the red carpet!” suggested Katie, the most starstruck of us all.

“Yes!” agreed Mia. “And we can get dressed up!”

We all laughed since Mia the fashionista will look for any excuse to get decked out.

“I can wear my dress from Dylan’s sweet sixteen,” said Alexis decisively, and we all laughed again since Alexis is usually so reluctant to get dressed up.

“Okay, let’s focus on work for a minute,” I said. I couldn’t keep talking about Romaine Ford and not spill the beans. “We need to make five dozen mini cupcakes for Mona—she wants half of the vanilla-vanilla combo and half cinnamon bun with cream cheese frosting for tomorrow morning. And that’s it, right?”

“Yes, but do you guys mind if I make this pink-lemonade frosting right now on the side? Maybe make an extra half dozen cupcakes and we can sample it?” asked Katie.

“Yum! Sample what?” said my oldest brother, Sam, walking into the kitchen from the mudroom.

“Sam!” cried my friends, which was both heartwarming and annoying. I have two older brothers, Sam and Matt, and one younger one, Jake, and they are all pretty irritating to me (Sam the least, actually), but my friends adore them. Mia and Katie baby Jake, Alexis is practically dating Matt, who’s a year older than us, and Mia and Katie both have massive crushes on Sam (who I do have to admit is good-looking).

“Sample nothing, mister!” I scolded.

“Emma!” chided Mia.

“My brand-new pink-lemonade frosting. I don’t care what Emma says—you’re our official tester,” declared Katie.

“No way!” I protested. “These guys will eat anything. Just slather some frosting on an old shoe, and Sam and the other guys will wolf it down and say it’s delicious. They’re totally indiscriminating!”

Sam came over and gave me a noogie while I shrieked. Then Matt came in with Jake, and suddenly it seemed there were boys everywhere, peering into bowls and sniffing the air.

“Out!” I commanded. “It’s my kitchen time! We’ll call you back if there’s something to sample, okay? You’re like a pack of wild hounds.”

Jake and Matt howled and woofed like wild hounds, but they all finally left, with my friends in varying degrees of the giggles. It was very quiet once the boys were gone, at least in the kitchen, but I could still hear them horsing around in the den. We worked in silence for a minute, and then the conversation turned, of course, back to Romaine.

“When is she getting married?” asked Katie.

“I don’t know,” I said. “I would figure it’s probably within the next month or two; it was a while ago that she ordered the dress.” And since she’s coming in for her fitting tomorrow, I added silently. The fitting is when they hem and alter the dress so it fits perfectly. Most brides have a few fittings close to the wedding day to make sure the dress is just right. Some are really picky and have, like, five or six, but most have around three. I knew Romaine was only having two fittings due to her schedule, so her wedding must be soon.

I kind of felt bad for Romaine. Most brides came in for their fittings with some friends and family, and it was always like a little party. Mona was coordinating how to sneak Romaine into the store so no one would try to take pictures or bother her. Trying to keep quiet like this makes me realize how hard it must be to be famous, with so many people caring about your every move. Imagine if someone was taking a picture of you every time you went to the supermarket or out to eat. I know they pay stars a lot, but really, they are never actually off duty. Work is full time and for life, if they do it well.

We finished up our baking duties, and Katie’s pink-lemonade frosting turned out really well. It was a pretty, pale pink color and tasted exactly like lemonade.

“Come and get it, troops!” Katie hollered out the kitchen door, and then there was a stampede. The girls and I stood back while my brothers gorged themselves on the extra cupcakes with either lemonade or vanilla frosting.

I rolled my eyes. “Are they good?” I asked loudly.

“Umm-hmmm.” Matt nodded emphatically.

“Yesss!” said Jake as crumbs tumbled out of his mouth.

“The vanilla are delicious. A little plain. The lemonade . . .,” said Sam.

Uh-oh. He won’t really say something mean about Katie’s new frosting, will he? I worried, but I didn’t need to. Good old Sammy.

“The lemonade ones are insane!”

Katie beamed like she was being photographed at a movie premiere. “Thanks!” she said happily.

I bit my tongue to keep from saying anything again about Sam not being very picky. I wanted Katie to enjoy the compliment.

“Any more?” asked Matt after eating two. He looked all around the counter to see if we were hiding some.

“That’s it, mister. You can’t eat up all our profits!” teased Alexis.

“I’ll pay!” said Matt, reaching into his pocket.

“Oh please. Like you can afford our cupcakes!” said Alexis, swatting him with a dish towel.

“Well, maybe if you didn’t charge one hundred dollars per cupcake,” teased Matt. They were both laughing and looking at each other all googly-eyed, and I wanted to barf so I had to turn away. Sometimes it’s superfun and convenient to have your best friend like your brother, and other times it’s superannoying.

For example, later that night, all the Cupcakers went to my room to change into our pj’s before we watched a movie downstairs. But this time Alexis refused to change into her pj’s. I thought it was odd, but then I got it. She didn’t want to wear her pj’s in front of Matt.

It’s just little stuff like that that adds up. I’d never say anything to Alexis though because then she would be sorry but also a little mad, and I wouldn’t want to start all that up. I had enough trouble with trying to keep my bridal salon work a secret from my friends, never mind alienating them officially.

Sometimes it’s so complicated just being me that I can’t imagine how Romaine Ford is her.

Not my favorite, but still a cute story
By T. Murrell
Emma works at a bridal store and her cupcake club also supplies the cupcakes that are served there. Her cupcake club consists of Emma and three of her friends from middle school. While working at the bridal store she meets her friend Romaine. Romaine is now famous and is getting married in town. But it is top secret and Emma can't tell her cupcake friends. Emma must find a way to bake the cupcakes for Romaine's wedding without telling her friends who they are baking them for.

Young readers will be entertained by the drama and tension in the novel. The author puts emphasis on the importance of keeping secrets and doing your best at any job. The emotions and conflicts between friends are situations that children will encounter in life and will be able to relate to. Girls will love the fashion, girl power, and friendships that are woven into the story. The author has written an engaging book that will make reading fun.

I received this book free of charge from Children's Lit in exchange for my honest review.
