Mindscape (The Ability Book 2), by M.M. Vaughan

Telekinetic preteens use their powers for good—and evil—in this mind-bending sequel to The Ability, which Publishers Weekly called a “fast-paced, superhero-tinged spy novel.”

Everywhere that Christopher Lane turns, he sees the face of the boy he killed. There is no escape from the guilt, not even on his return to Myers Holt—the secret London academy where he and five others are being trained to use their mental powers, their Ability.

But now that the threat of Dulcia Genever has been dealt with, his friends are too busy working for the police, entering the minds of some of the country’s most dangerous criminals, to sympathize. Chris’s teachers are already concerned enough about him, especially when Chris starts to wonder if the boy may not be a figment of his imagination after all.

Meanwhile, alone in Darkwhisper Manor, Ernest Genever is enjoying watching Chris’s torment. Yes, he will keep his promise—Christopher Lane will die—but not until he has watched Chris lose his mind waiting for Ernest to appear. For, if nothing else, Dulcia Genever did teach her son one valuable lesson:

Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Two weeks before end of term, thinking his Ability is short-lived, Chris risks his slot at Myers-Holt to find and confront Ernest. As engaging as this second book is, readers who haven’t read The Ability (2013) will be at a disadvantage. However, series fans will eagerly await the third installment, when Chris turns 13. Mindscape • CHAPTER ONE •

Wednesday, January 2
Christopher Lane stood on the sidewalk outside his house, his bags at his feet, and waited for the car that would take him back to school. He was half an hour early but was eager to get away, exhausted by the silence and tension in his house. It had been a difficult few days. His mother had not once celebrated Christmas with him in the seven years that had passed since his father’s death, and so, as usual, there had been no gifts exchanged, his efforts for their Christmas meal had gone unmentioned, and he had watched the New Year’s celebrations on the television by himself while his mother slept upstairs. This year, however, he had had even more to contend with—not the least of which was that he had barely slept the entire time, his mind plagued by the memory of the boy he had killed. Chris had always managed to cope on his own, but for the first time in years, he had needed his mother. And she had let him down.

So much had changed since his twelfth birthday: His scholarship at Myers Holt Academy, the exclusive government school that he had enrolled at only a few months earlier, had included the payment of bills and renovations to his house. Everything possible had been offered to his mother to help her, and Chris had expected that for his mother, as much as for himself, this marked a new beginning. Instead, she had ignored it all, choosing to remain locked in self-pity. It was a decision that Chris could not begin to understand. He missed his father every day, but if he, at twelve years old, could understand that life had to go on, then surely so should his mother.

He had watched her over the last few days, staring blankly at the television, looking up only to bark orders in his direction, and any sympathy that he had previously felt completely disappeared. That morning, he had packed his bags with the clothes that his new school had bought for him and a photograph of his father and left without bothering to wake his mother up. He doubted that, even if she noticed he had left, she would care. Chris resolved to think no more of it until he returned home—which, assuming he was allowed to remain at school on their free weekends, would not be until the Easter holidays in three months’ time.

“Oi—you, Twist!”

Chris jerked his head round at the sound of the familiar voice. Kevin Blunt, his old nemesis, who had made his life a living nightmare at his old school, was walking quickly toward him, his gang following behind. For a split second, Chris felt himself tense up, before suddenly remembering what he was now capable of. He stood straight and watched the boys approach.

“Whatcha doing?” asked Kevin, looking down at the bags by Chris’s feet. “Your mum thrown you out?”

Arch, Kevin’s gormless sidekick, and the other boys laughed.

“I’m going back to school,” said Chris.

“Oh, yeah, didn’t you get into that special school?” asked Kevin.

“That’s right,” said Chris.

“What is it, a school for poor thieves who can’t take a beating?”

“Something like that,” said Chris, refusing to let Kevin rile him.

Kevin, on the other hand, grew increasingly agitated by Chris’s calmness.

“Hope you’ve learned something, then, ’cause I reckon I owe you a beating,” said Kevin. He walked up to Chris and looked him square in the eyes.

“I don’t think you want to do that, Kevin,” said Chris, looking around to make sure the coast was clear.

“Oh, yeah, and why’s that?”

“Because last time you threatened me with a beating, you ended up sitting in a tray of custard.”

Arch and the other boys laughed. Kevin’s face turned red.

“What’s so funny?” he asked.

The boys all stopped laughing immediately. “Uh, nothing,” they all mumbled, looking down at their shoes.

“Good. You got lucky last time, Twist,” said Kevin, turning back to face Chris.

“I can do it again, Kevin, so back off,” said Chris, surprised at the confidence he had now that he knew about his Ability, the powers that all twelve-year-olds had for one year only. Lucky for Chris, this was a well-kept secret—one that Kevin, although twelve himself, was completely in the dark about.

Kevin frowned but didn’t respond. His eyes went down to the bag at Chris’s feet. Chris could tell Kevin was unnerved by his confidence.

“What’s in there?”

“Just clothes.”

Kevin bent down.

“Don’t touch it,” said Chris, but it was too late. Kevin had already unzipped the bag.

“What?! Where did you get these from?” asked Kevin, pulling out a pair of designer sneakers that had been bought for him by the teachers at his new school after he had run away from home carrying nothing.

“They were a present,” said Chris, grabbing them out of Kevin’s hands.

“Yeah, right. Still robbing, then,” said Kevin, pulling out some more clothes from Chris’s bag.

Chris looked down at Kevin, and he clenched his jaw in anger. He breathed in deeply, reminding himself that the use of the Ability without the permission of his school was strictly banned.

Kevin, taking advantage of Chris’s silence, continued to rummage through the bag.

“Get your hands off my stuff!” said Chris.

“What’s this?” asked Kevin, pulling out the photograph of Chris’s father in his military uniform. Kevin smiled. If there was one thing he knew, it was that the surest way to rile Chris was to mention his family.

“Don’t touch that!” said Chris.

“If he was anything like you,” said Kevin, looking at the picture with a smirk, “he probably died trying to run away. The world’s a better place with one less coward from the Lane family.”

“He was a hero—not that you’d know anything about what that means,” said Chris, leaning forward to grab the picture.

Kevin snatched it away and held it up over his head. For a moment, Chris and Kevin stared at each other, and then, before Chris had a chance to react, Kevin opened his hand and the picture fell to the ground, the glass shattering all around their feet.

In that instant, Chris forgot all about the rules of Myers Holt and the consequences of using his Ability out in the open. He looked up at Kevin, and his mind went blank.

Arch and the rest of the gang, who had been laughing up until that point, turned silent as they watched Kevin begin to shake.

“Uh . . . what’s happening?” asked Kevin, suddenly looking very frightened. “Why am I—”

Before Kevin had a chance to finish the sentence, he flew straight up into the air, as if he were a rocket launched full throttle into space.

“Help me!” he screamed, but his friends didn’t react—they stayed rooted to the spot in shock as they watched Kevin flying up past the lampposts.

“Nobody insults my dad,” said Chris, never taking his eyes off Kevin, who was now a small figure way up past the rooftops.

And then, when he’d reached the point where he was barely visible anymore, Kevin stopped rising. For a moment, there was total silence as everybody watched Kevin, too high to be heard, flail about uselessly.

Chris furrowed his brow and placed the image of Kevin being thrown about in the air into his mind. As soon as he had done so, Kevin immediately began to move again, this time looping the loop over and over again.

“AaaaAAARRGHHaaaaargh . . .” Kevin’s screams increased in volume as he neared the ground, upside down, and faded out again as he was lifted up into the skies once more. Chris was about to throw Kevin into another loop when a booming shout interrupted him.

“Christopher!”

Chris jerked his head round, and immediately his focus was broken. There, to his horror, he saw the two figures of John and Ron, the security guards from Myers Holt Academy, standing by a long black car with darkened windows. The car doors were still open from where they had jumped out.

Chris hesitated and then opened his mouth to try to explain what had happened, but a loud screeching sound interrupted him.

“mmmmmUUUUUMMMMYYYY!”

Chris looked up and saw Kevin freefalling back to Earth, his voice now loud and clear. John took three enormous strides forward, put his bulging arms out, and caught a whimpering Kevin with a soft thud. John leaned forward, then placed Kevin gently on his feet, his legs still trembling so hard that he fell backward into Arch, who put his arms out to hold him steady.

“What did you do?” blubbered Kevin, tears pouring down his face. “What was that?”

Chris was about to respond when Ron, wearing his trademark sunglasses and black suit, stepped forward and grabbed Kevin by the scruff of his neck. Although half the size of the gigantic John, Ron nevertheless cut a very intimidating figure when angry.

“Now you listen here, and the rest of you too. You saw nothing. You heard nothing. In fact, if anybody asks, you’re going to tell them you had a nice day at the park. Do you understand?”

“Yes,” whispered Kevin.

“Good. Now tell me, what did you do today?”

“We went to the park,” said Kevin, his bottom lip wobbling.

“And what did you do there?”

“We . . . um . . . played soccer?”

“Good,” said Ron. “Now, before you boys run home crying, I think there’s something you need to know. Unfortunately for you all, you are looking at two of the government’s top agents, which basically means we know everything. Isn’t that right, John?”

“That’s right, Ron,” said John, his arms folded across his enormous frame.

“You can’t so much as sneeze without us finding out about it,” continued Ron, “so, if we hear that one of you has breathed a word of what happened today, there will be consequences, and believe me, with the connections we have, the police won’t be coming to your rescue. Do you understand?”

“Yes,” said Kevin, nodding his head vigorously, still sniffling.

“Yes, what?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Good. Now get out of here.”

The boys all looked up at Ron—their eyes wide and teary, their bodies shaking with fear.

“Scram!” shouted Ron, and without giving Chris another look, Kevin turned and ran off, the other boys following quickly behind him.

“Come on, Christopher, let’s get this mess sorted out,” said John, stooping to pick up Chris’s bag.

Chris knelt down and started to pick up the clothes and shoes scattered about the pavement. “I’m going to be in so much trouble, aren’t I?”

“Only if your teachers find out about it. We’re not planning on telling anybody, are we, Ron?”

“I didn’t see anything at all, John, did you?” said Ron, picking up the shards of glass and placing them in a nearby bin.

“Not a thing, Ron,” said John, picking up the photograph of Chris’s father. “Bit of an accident here, though, but it’s nothing that Maura won’t be able to sort out. I’m sure she has a spare frame you could put this into.”

“Thank you,” said Chris. “I didn’t think . . . It’s just that . . .”

“You don’t have to explain anything, son. We saw what that boy did as we drove up. I’d have done exactly the same if I’d been in your position.”

Chris smiled, grateful to be back around people who genuinely cared for him. He put the last of his clothes back in the bag and zipped it up.

“Right, then, let’s forget all of this and get you to school. Your friends are waiting for you.”

Brilliant, simply brilliant!
By Susan Ahad
If you are looking for a book to stimulate your kids mind , look no further. The story will capture their imagination in a way that they can easily relate to. It's not easy finding suitable books for my son, who's 11. They are either too babyish or I veto them as being too adult. Mindscape, and The Ability get it just right. Hope there's another one coming!

I thoroughly enjoyed The Ability and was looking forward to the sequel. I was not disappointed. The characters are still there and the pace is good. The story makes you want to keep reading to find what happens next. I recommend this book for children from about 8 years to early teens. Hope we get more from this author.

GREAT!
By Kaitlyn
I was given this for a Christmas present not too long ago and I absoulutely loved it. It gives clear and detailed descriptions on how to practice and practice faces to do some stuff on :) The only reason why I didn't rate it 5 stars was because it came with a ripped page and some bent pages but other than that fabulous!!

Fugitive X (Revolution 19 Book 2), by Gregg Rosenblum

From the creators of Homeland and American Horror Story comes Fugitive X, the chilling sequel to Revolution 19.

After the robot revolution, anyone who escaped capture by the bots made their homes in secret freeposts in the wilderness outside the bot-controlled Cities. Siblings Nick, Kevin, and Cass never would have dreamed of venturing into the Cities, but when their parents are kidnapped, they have no choice but to follow them.

Not everything goes as planned, though, and the siblings find themselves fleeing the city without their parents. And then the three are separated, and for the first time, they are on their own. Cass is brought in for reprogramming by the bots; Nick joins up with rebel soldiers; and Kevin meets the man who is responsible for the robot technology—and their only chance at defeating the robots once and for all.

As the three fight to take down the bots, they must prepare for a looming war between bots and humans that will decide the fate of the human world forever.

From Booklist
This follow-up to Revolution 19 (2013) goes the way of sequels like Veronica Roth’s Insurgent (2012) and Lauren Oliver’s Pandemonium (2012) by following our heroes out of their Big Brother worlds and into scrappy rebel camps. Rosenblum quickly splits up our siblings: Kevin is taken to the safe haven of “the Island,” where bots are actually used for good; Nick joins a Freepost only for it to be attacked; and Cass undergoes brainwashing at the hands of the nefarious City. This is by the numbers (newcomers are mistrusted, unexpected lineages revealed, and love triangles begun), but it is satisfyingly executed and comes with plenty of adolescent snark: “Kiss my fleshy human butt.” Grades 7-10. --Daniel Kraus

Review
Praise for FUGITIVE X: “good action sequences and an interesting future milieu make this fine pleasure reading.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Praise for REVOLUTION 19: “An exciting, dystopian page turner…Robot apocalypse done right” (Kirkus Reviews)

“A strong start to what looks to be an exciting series.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Good old–fashioned sci–fi action starring remorseless laser–firing robots and ridiculously brave and selfless teenagers.” (Booklist)

From the Back Cover

Our fight for freedom is humanity's last hope for survival.

Siblings Nick, Kevin, and Cass are struggling to survive in a world where deadly robots have enslaved humankind. Attacked by bot soldiers after escaping the robot-controlled city, the siblings are separated from each other for the first time. Their only chance of staying alive is to fight, not knowing whether they'll ever see one another again.

A war between humans and robots is on the horizon, and only one side will survive. But what the siblings don't know is that their movements are being closely monitored, and Nick, Kevin, and Cass are more important to the bots than they ever could have imagined. . . .

By Kayla's Reads and Reviews
I read an ARC of Revolution 19 quite some time ago. It was one of my favorite books of 2013. Even though it's been several years since I've read Revolution 19, I wanted to continue with the series, so I picked up Fugitive X. I didn't enjoy it as much as Revolution 19, but it was still good. I didn't find this book as action packed as the first one, which made it boring at times. There was a lot of dialogue and politics going on, which I didn't enjoy nearly as much.

It had been quite a long time since I read Revolution 19, but I didn't find Fugitive X confusing at all. Fugitive X gives the reader reminders of what happened all throughout the book, which I found very helpful. It made my reading time a lot easier, and more enjoyable.

That being said, the book did have it's good points. I got to revisit some of my favorite characters, and continue their story lines. Cass turned into a complete bad ass, which I loved. I think throughout this book, she became my favorite character in the series.

While I didn't like everything in Fugitive X, I did think that it was a good sequel. I love the scifi/dystopian world that Gregg Rosenblum had created. I'm excited to read City 1, the final book in the trilogy, to see how everything wraps up.

Good continuation of the series
By Amazon Customer
Fugitive X starts immediately where the first one left off. Nick, Kevin, and Cass have managed to escape the city but weren't able to save their parents. They are headed to the nearest freepost to try and reunite with their friends. There they hope to figure out a way back into the city and stage some sort of rebellion.

All of the kids end up getting separated soon after the start. After Nick is separated from the group Cass is injured and on the brink of death and Kevin has no choice but to leave her for a bot to find. Meanwhile Nick is taking by some strange robots to a place called the island. For the first time all three siblings are separated.

Cass’s story goes a completely different direction than I thought it would, with a rather large plot twist. Cass is brought back to the city to be re-educated. Everything goes completely wrong. Her sections of the book are by far my favorite. As with the first book, I had a horrible time keeping Kevin and Nick's characters straight. I would always forget who was who especially now that they weren’t together and Nick.

Speaking of plot twists, that happens a couple times during this book and I rather enjoyed that. I did see one coming from a mile away though. However I don’t think there was a way to keep that hidden. I would have been more surprised if I had been wrong.

This book gave us a little more of an explanation for what happened and why but still not enough. I am super interested to see who the Senior Advisor really is and why he want’s so much to be human. I think I might now who fugitive X is but I am not quite sure on that either. The ending to this book was fantastic though and left us with quite a cliffhanger. I can’t wait to continue on with the last book.

*I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The fight for freedom continues!
By EdenJean
In the exciting sequel to REVOLUTION 19, Nick, Cass, and their little brother Kevin are separated by warring forces in a dystopian world controled by robots. Nick ends up with a group of hostile rebels. Cass is captured and reeducated by the bots. Kevin is indoctrinated into a hidden encampment in the forest known as The Island, where he discovers secrets about the origin of the bots, and about his family.

The alternating perspectives between Nick, Cass, Kevin, and the freaking Robot Leader (!!!) is my favorite part of this book. Switching perspectives every single chapter is a very grown-up sci-fi thing to do, and Gregg Rosenblum manages to not only pull it off, but do it so well that it isn't confusing, jarring, or difficult to follow at all.

The characters are well-developed and more than different enough from each other to keep it interesting. Nick is a tough guy with a soft spot for his siblings. Cass is practical girl dragged into the robots' world against her will. Kevin is clever, funny, and so very feisty. The robot leader is just so strange. The supporting characters, some new, some returning faces from REVOLUTION 19, are very cool as well. The dynamic relationships between the characters is a little different from R19 - Rosenblum takes a step back from the techy side of things and focuses on conflict between sides in the war, tension between friend and foe. I absolutely loved that about this book.

The action in FX is dramatic, fast-paced, and pretty violent without being too gory or intense. It's also somewhat unpredictable, which I appreciated. You never know who is going to get kidnapped by bots, or when something is going to explode. At any moment someone could get lased or somehow take out a bot all on their own. Rebels could show up to save you or bad guys could knock you out and drag you away.

There is a particularly interesting twist at the end of the book that I totally didn't see coming! I kept turning the pages, knowing that the end of the book was near but not having any idea how it was going to wrap up, and then WHAM! Intense plot twist in your face! To find out what happens you'll have to read R19 and its sequel, FUGITIVE X.

Illus. in full color."Mirandy is sure she'll win the cake walk if she can catch Brother Wind for her partner, but he eludes all the tricks her friends advise. From Publishers Weekly
As a prefatory note explains, this picture book was inspired by a photo of the author's grandparents winning a cakewalk"a dance rooted in Afro-American culture"and her grandfather's boast that, in her dancing, his wife had captured the wind. In the book, Mirandy determines to catch Brother Wind and have him for her partner in the upcoming junior cakewalk. She tries a number of tactics springing from folk wisdom, and finally succeeds in trapping her prey in the barn. At the contest, Mirandy chooses to dance with her friend Ezelbut, with Brother Wind to do her bidding, the two friends win the cakewalk in style. Told in spirited dialect and rendered in lavish, sweeping watercolors, this provides an intriguing look at a time gone by. As a story, however, it proves somewhat disappointing. After the colorful description of cakewalking in the author's note and the anticipation created through Mirandy's own eagerness, the brief and rather static scenes portraying the dance itself are a letdown. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3 Sultry watercolor washes in a realistic flowing style spread luxuriously and consistently over every two pages in this story set in the rural south. Young Mirandy wants to win her town's cakewalk jubilee, a festive dance contest. (According to the "Author's Note," this dance was "first introduced in America by slaves. . .and is rooted in Afro-American culture.") Everyone says that if she captures the Wind he will do her bidding, but nobody seems to know how to capture him. In the end, Mirandy does believe that she has captured Brother Wind, but she also proves that she is a true friend to clumsy Ezel. McKissack's sincere belief in the joy of living is delightfully translated into this story which concludes, "When Grandmama Beasley had seen Mirandy and Ezel turning and spinning, moving like shadows in the flickering candlelight, she'd thrown back her head, laughed, and said, 'Them chullin' is dancing with the Wind!' " A captivating story, with a winning heroine, told in black dialect. Gratia Banta, Germantown Public Library, Ohio

From the Inside Flap
Illus. in full color."Mirandy is sure she'll win the cake walk if she can catch Brother Wind for her partner, but he eludes all the tricks her friends advise. This gets a high score for plot, pace, and characterization. Mirandy sparkles with energy and determination. Multi-hued watercolors fill the pages with patterned ferment. A treat to pass on to new generations."--(starred) Bulletin, Center for Children's Books. Cassette running time: 20 min.

Wonderful book. I used for a tea and book reading event. We went over the history of dance and how it impacts our culture.

Lush Illustrations

An effort by these two terrific professionals is bound to have many good qualities. This won a Caldecott honor designation, and rightly so. Pinkney's watercolors are intricate, absorbing, a real pleasure. The multicolored dresses of girls at a dance are especially pretty. I notice he uses two motifs in his books, chickens and quilts. Both are included here.

This book begins with an author's note on the history of the cakewalk in African American culture. The story is based on a photograph of McKissack's grandparents, who won a cakewalk in 1906 before they married. The photo was taken after they won.

Mirandy is longing to win the upcoming cakewalk, but she needs a partner. Her friend, Ezel, might fit the bill but doesn't seem too keen on participating. He teases her that he is going with another girl. Mirandy thinks she will win the contest if she can capture Brother Wind, an imaginary character drawn like a bluish white ghost. His grace and speed are what she thinks it will take to finish first. Of course, Mirandy and Ezel end up together, and win the cakewalk with their sassy moves.

Recommend for older child

I purchased this book for my 4 year old. The book is clearly meant for older children. I would suggest the age range is more appropriate for 6-8 year olds.

Gastric cancer is the second most common cause of cancer mortality worldwide. Although the incidence of gastric cancer has declined over the past century in the United States, it remains one of the most common gastrointestinal neoplasms, particularly in immigrants and the socio-economically deprived. Recent years have seen major advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis of gastric cancer (especially regarding the importance of Helicobacter pylori and its associated inflammatory response) and the emergence of adjuvant oncologic therapies of proven benefit for advanced cases, in addition to surgery. As for gastric adenocarcinoma, elucidation of the underlying biology and molecular pathogenesis has led to much progress in the management of two other malignant gastric neoplasms, gastrointestinal stromal tumors and marginal zone B-cell (“MALT) lymphomas. This monograph highlights these developments, presenting an updated overview of gastric cancer that will be of interest to all practicing gastroenterologists.

“[A] terrific book about a visionary post–food bank project.” —Michael Pollan

THE INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER

British super chef Jamie Oliver called it "amazing," writing that he'd traveled all over the world and never seen anything like it. New York Times food writer Mark Bittman called it "one of those forward-thinking groups pointing the way to the future of good food." Raj Patel, the critically acclaimed author of Stuffed and Starved, said he was "blown away" by it.

So what is it? The Stop, a Community Food Centre that has revolutionized the way we combat hunger and poverty.

Since community worker Nick Saul became the executive director of The Stop in 1998, it has been transformed from a cramped food bank to a thriving, internationally respected Community Food Centre. The Stop has flourished with gardens, kitchens, a greenhouse, farmers' markets and a mission to revolutionize our food system. In a voice that's "never preachy" (MacLean's), Saul and Curtis share what The Stop could mean for the future of food, and argue that everyone deserves a dignified, healthy place at the table.

My hands are covered in toner from our finicky photocopying machine when the garden assistant opens the door, the sounds of the busy street racing inside with her. Everyone in the open space looks up. She’s tanned after a summer in the sun and seems excited.
“You have to come into the back,” she says. “We’re making callaloo.”
I’ve never heard the word, but I’m glad of a reprieve from the maddening machine. We head out the door, around the side of the apartment building and into the food bank. Rhonda is inside the community space. With more staff, we’re now able to use it regularly, including for the new community kitchen groups that Rhonda has started.
A cluster of people is sitting at one of the round tables. And I can see through the small pass-through into the cramped kitchen that there are more inside. The smell wafting out is thick with garlic. We all sit down, and Herman, our garden neighbour, emerges wearing an apron, carrying a tray covered in leafy greens that he’s steamed and cooked with salt fish, garlic, onions, salt and pepper, and sweet red peppers. “Callaloo,” he says proudly.
Rhonda tells us the story as we take our tentative first bites. One day recently Herman came into the garden and saw some volunteers pulling out what they thought was a weed. “That’s no weed,” he told Rhonda. “It’s callaloo.” So she asked Herman to show everyone how the Caribbean specialty is cooked and eaten, and today a group of volunteers is trying out his favourite vegetable.
The verdict is good. It looks and tastes a lot like spinach or kale. Herman is pleased, proud to show off his Jamaican roots.
Rhonda did a bit of digging and discovered that Jamaicans aren’t the only ones who love this plant. People all over the world know it and its different varieties as “amaranth” and eagerly eat the tender leaves, stalks and seeds. She also found that farmers north of the city call one variety of the plant “pigweed” and consider it a scourge. The seeds spread easily in the wind and they struggle to contain it on their farms.
I look at the faces around the table—Herman and Rhonda; Francesca and Dorino; Gordon, who’s been working at the plot since the first day we dug the fence posts; a woman who lives in a rooming house nearby and suffers from severe diabetes.
One person’s weed, it seems, is another’s delicacy. In fact, as I’m beginning to realize, food is never just food.

[…]Some people have argued that teaching people to cook from scratch is actually the answer to hunger and poor health in North America. Such cookery advocates argue that cost, or income, is not the major barrier to eating nutritious food. Frugal food bloggers chronicle their attempts to live on a dollar a day; Slow Food USA hosted the $5 Challenge with the cheeky tagline “Take back the ‘value meal.’” Mark Bittman, the celebrated New York Times columnist and cookbook author, writes regularly about health and sustainability as linked to “the all-but-vanished craft of cooking and associated thrift.”
They’re right, of course. Acquiring food skills is essential for anyone who wants to break the habit of relying on processed food. But for many people at The Stop, like those on low incomes everywhere, it’s not so simple. Lack of income is a major barrier to buying fresh food and making meals out of it. Shopping, prepping and cooking time is often extremely limited for people who might be working several minimum wage jobs just to make ends meet. And many who use our programs don’t even have a stove or a kitchen to cook in. Trying to live on a social assistance check of less than six hundred dollars a month in a rooming house or jammed in with others in a one-bedroom apartment means proper cooking facilities are frequently unavailable.
And you can’t discount the social exclusion faced by people living in poverty. Sharing a great meal with others can help you feel connected and alive, as it does for Rosa and the rest of the Meals Made Easy crew, but if you’re on your own in a dingy, miserable room, cooking a meal by yourself can simply serve to highlight your solitude.
While we can’t claim community kitchens—and the food skills learned there—are going to end the poverty or hunger of participants, they can definitely help low-income community members eat more healthily, have greater control over their personal circumstances and break out of their isolation.
For Rosa and her family, the kitchen was a gateway to The Stop’s other programs. They soon became involved in the Earlscourt garden. Rosa had some farming experience from back home in Italy, and they already grew beautiful roses as well as some vegetables and herbs in their backyard. Their mint even won a gardening contest Rhonda organized. As he’s grown older, Tony has become involved, too. “I have two green thumbs,” he says proudly, holding up his hands.
“Except when you first started, you couldn’t plant straight,” his mother laughs. “I tell him, ‘Plant it like the CN Tower, not the Tower of Pisa!’”
              Tony shrugs. “Now I know.”
The Stop has become a huge part of Tony and Rosa’s family life. They volunteer and also drop in for meals, taking part in programs whenever they can. “I was raised in this place,” says Tony, who lives at home and works for a major big box retailer. “I’m one of The Stop kids.”
Some staff and volunteers, in fact, know Rosa as Mamma. She hasn’t forgotten what it felt like to be a newcomer in the big city and she’s glad to help those people who come from far away and still feel like “little birds.” When she’s introduced to people new to The Stop, those who are scared and nervous and worried about saying the wrong thing, she offers up her big, warm smile and says, “Welcome home.”

Great read.
By J. Lund
Nick Saul has provided a trenchant analysis of the food bank system while telling the stories of people who have tuRned to them for survival. While exposing the growing reliance on food pantries and soup kitchens to feed food insecure people, he shows a way forward to end hunger.

I think this is a must read for everyone. The problem of hunger has reached all time highs in this country. This book chronicles an approach truly dealing with the problem compared to a weekly band-aid approach.
