Uncrashable Dakota, by Andy Marino

In 1862, Union army infantryman Samuel Dakota changed history when he spilled a bottle of pilfered moonshine in the Virginia dirt and stumbled upon the biochemical secret of flight. Not only did the Civil War come to a much quicker close, but Dakota Aeronautics was born.

Now, in Andy Marino's Uncrashable Dakota, it is 1912, and the titanic Dakota flagship embarks on its maiden flight. But shortly after the journey begins, the airship is hijacked. Fighting to save the ship, the young heir of the Dakota empire, Hollis, along with his brilliant friend Delia and his stepbrother, Rob, are plunged into the midst of a long-simmering family feud. Maybe Samuel's final secret wasn't just the tinkering of a madman after all. . . .

What sinister betrayals and strange discoveries await Hollis and his friends in the gilded corridors and opulent staterooms? Who can be trusted to keep the most magnificent airship the world has ever known from falling out of the sky?

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—On its surface, this novel seems to possess all the fundamental elements of good, solid steampunk: Victorian sensibilities, an enormous airship, a plucky inventor girl, an alternate history, and…flatulent beetles? During the Civil War, Hollis Dakota's grandfather was a soldier whose clumsiness resulted in the serendipitous discovery of the secret of flight. Decades later, in 1912, Hollis, his mother, his stepbrother, and his stepfather board what is the fruition of the Dakotas's hard work and vision: the magnificent Wendell Dakota, a glorious airship said to be uncrashable. But a dark secret in the family's past will have ramifications for the vessel, and not long after the launch, hijackers take control. Their ineptitude with the gassy beetles that make the ship airborne begins a trajectory toward certain destruction. As many themes are explored throughout the story-class, family secrets, friendship, bizarre beetle-worshiping cults, a superficial connection to the Titanic, along with the typical steampunk fare-readers may have difficulty following along. The characters aren't nuanced. Instead, they seem to be pale reflections of what fans of the genre expect and the relationships between Hollis and company lack depth. Ultimately, a valid choice for readers who have devoured every other steampunk novel on the shelf.—Heather M. Campbell, formerly at Philip S. Miller Library, Castle Rock, CO

From Booklist
In 1912, the Wendell Dakota, a titanic airship, is powered by beetles that become buoyant after ingesting moonshine-soaked tree sap. It is publicized as “uncrashable.” Thirteen-year-old Hollis, heir to Dakota Aeronautics, bungles the christening, and once in the air, the ship is hijacked and Hollis’ mother, Lucy, is kidnapped. Unlikely alliances are created as Hollis; his stepbrother, Rob; assistant beetle-keeper Delia; and steerage passengers Maggie and Chester ignore their class differences and scour the deepest, darkest, and loudest bridges, decks, and holds of the ship to find Lucy and prevent the ship from crashing. Sprinkled throughout is “The History of Flight in America,” a necessary but somewhat intrusive telling of the development of flight. Nevertheless, the race to stay airborne while thwarting the hijacker’s plans will have readers cheering. Inspired by Walter Lord’s classic A Night to Remember (1955), this thriller features a girl inventor, the fun quirkiness of science, and a mash-up of history. This will appeal to steampunk enthusiasts who enjoyed Scott Westerfeld’s Leviathan trilogy or Kenneth Oppel’s Matt Cruse trilogy. Grades 7-12. --Jeanne E. Fredriksen

Enjoyable Young Teen/Children's Adventure
By Talvi
Uncrashable Dakota was a very surprising read. What started as a simple adventure very reminiscent of Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan Trilogy soon turned into something completely different by the middle of the book.

The premise of the plot is simple: Samuel Dakota chances upon a way to create lift through beetles and moonshine/tree sap. He uses this knowledge to end the civil war early and create an empire. His young grandson, tween Hollis Dakota, is now helping his mother launch the flagship of his missing grandfather's company: the Wendell Dakota (named after his deceased father). On board with his stepfather and stepbrother Rob, what should have been a routine maiden voyage goes horribly wrong. Samuel Dakota had secrets and they are coming due.

The author cleverly interwove brief episodes in the time of Samuel Dakota (1862 Civil War) that slowly unlocked the keys to explain all that is happening in Hollis Dakota's present (1912 Edwardian) situation aboard the Wendell Dakota. This allowed the story to unfold at a great pace without the need for a lot of expository.

Also clever were the world building and characters. Without needed too much explanation, we're given a slowly developing glimpse of several of the characters and their pasts - helping to define them over the course of the story. I also really liked the various gadgets, toys, machinery, etc. - they are explained but not overly so, creating a great sense of wonder.

Near the end, the book really became something else completely - owing quite a nod to "A Night to Remember". The story is not coincidentally set in 1912 with a ship deemed 'uncrashable'. It does get a bit dark and very serious - quite a bit more than I would have expected for a YA. But that is also to its credit that the tone throughout the book is mature and doesn't pander to a young audience. There are several social statements being made as well on several themes pertinent to the Civil War Era, Edwardian Era, and today.

In all, I found this to be a well constructed book with a very good plot, interesting characters, and a surprising depth. 4 out of 5 stars due to the plot becoming a bit sidetracked with the literal "Night to Remember" sequence.

Received as an ARC from the publisher.

Adventurous Tale for Middle Grade Readers
By K. M. Martin
Thirteen-year-old Hollis Dakota is the heir to Dakota Aeronautics and a passenger on the company's greatest invention - the Wendell Dakota. After his father's accidental death, his mother remarried Jefferson Castor. Castor's son Rob is Hollis' best friend and is well-known for leading him into mischief. Both boys are friends with Delia who is an apprentice beetle keeper on the ship.

This is alternate history. History changes when Hollis' grandfather Samuel discovers a variety of beetle that becomes lighter than air when fed on a mixture of tree sap and moonshine. His discovery leads to the invention of flying machines which support the Northern side of the Civil War and end the war long before it ended in our timeline.

This story begins fifty years later. Samuel has disappeared into the sky. Dakota Aeronautics has grown into a massive company. When the Wendell Dakota is hijacked by Jefferson Castor to get revenge on the Dakota family because Samuel accidentally killed his grandfather, Hollis, Delia and assorted friends from steerage need to find a way to defeat the hijackers and save the passengers. Rob is torn between his friendship with Hollis and his love for his father.

The story was filled with interesting detail about the design of the massive airship and the science of using beetles to power flight. Delia - a genius inventor - also invents a number of useful gadgets including a taser and wireless radio which aid the kids as they try to save the ship.

The story was an exciting adventure story but not an easy story to read. The text was complex. Not only were there several flashbacks but the story was told from a variety of points of view. Able middle grade readers and high school readers will enjoy this adventurous tale.

The Myth of Repressed Memory: False Memories and Allegations of Sexual Abuse, by Dr. Elizabeth Loftus, Katherine Ketcham

According to many clinical psychologists, when the mind is forced to endure a horrifying experience, it has the ability to bury the entire memory of it so deeply within the unconscious that it can only be recalled in the form of a flashback triggered by a sight, a smell, or a sound. Indeed, therapists and lawyers have created an industry based on treating and litigating the cases of people who suddenly claim to have "recovered" memories of everything from child abuse to murder.

This book reveals that despite decades of research, there is absolutely no controlled scientific support for the idea that memories of trauma are routinely banished into the unconscious and then reliably recovered years later. Since it is not actually a legitimate psychological phenomenon, the idea of "recovered memory"--and the movement that has developed alongside it--is thus closer to a dangerous fad or trendy witch hunt.

From Publishers Weekly
While acknowledging the reality of childhood sexual abuse, Loftus, a research psychologist specializing in memory, believes that in many cases, people create false memories of nonexistent abuse, prompted to do so by their psychotherapists. Writing in the first person with coauthor Ketcham (with whom she wrote Witness for the Defense), Loftus critiques the tools used by some therapists ("trance work," hypnosis, dream analysis, journal writing, etc.) to "recover" patients' buried memories. She presents numerous case histories involving presumed memories that turned out to be fabrications and reports on a study in which false memories of childhood events were created in men and women volunteers. She also discusses her involvement in the case of Paul Ingram, a Washington deputy sheriff who confessed that he was a priest in a satanic cult and sodomizer of children after his two daughters accused him of sexual abuse; he later retracted his confession but was imprisoned anyway. This eye-opening book makes a compelling argument for caution. Author tour.

From Library Journal
In this latest entry in the repressed memory/false memory debate, Loftus (psychology, Univ. of Washington; Witness for the Defense, LJ 3/15/91) recounts several incidents of false memory syndrome in a popular 60 Minutes style. While the author does not completely dismiss the theory of repressed memory, she believes that it has become a dangerous panacea in the hands of too many inexperienced therapists. Loftus contends that counselors are inadvertently instilling "memories" of sexual abuse in their patients. She discusses the genesis of this phenomenon at great length, moving from Ellen Bass's Courage To Heal (LJ 5/15/88) to her current foil, Lenore Terr (Unchained Memories: True Stories of Traumatic Memories, Lost and Found, LJ 1/94). Recommended for collections needing balance in their treatment of this subject. (Index not seen.)-A. Arro Smith, San Marcos P.L., Tex.

From Booklist
As a cognitive psychologist, Loftus has acquired extensive insight into the malleability of memory. For example, her research has shown that false traumatic childhood "memories" can be readily induced in adults, who then enrich the implanted memory with detail and emotion. The results of such studies and a total lack of evidence of memory repression lead Loftus and other eminent psychologists to attribute the wide prevalence of recovered memories of childhood sexual abuse and satanic ritual abuse to therapist bias. Coauthor Ketcham and Loftus describe the anguish of the accused and of the families shattered by disastrous combinations of ill-trained, overzealous therapists, suggestibility of vulnerable patients, and group-therapy pressure to exhume and share monstrous memories. They neither dispute the reality of childhood sexual abuse nor the existence of traumatic memories, but they reject the true believers' assertions that "incest is epidemic, repression is rampant" and that "skeptics" are "in denial." Highly recommended. Brenda Grazis

Looking Through A Mirror
By Monica Willyard
When I read this book, the chapter about Lynn, I began to shake and then to cry. The author described my experience with a therapist from 1994 to 1999. For the past couple of years, I have been trying to put my life together and explain to myself what happened so I could try to explain it to my family. These kind and brave women gave me the words. These ladies are not shaming or cruel to sexual abuse victims at all. I thought they might be at first by reading the book jacket. They also helped me to understand why 5 years of my life went by in a fog where somehow I went from a fairly normal woman to a paranoid woman on 7 psycho-active drugs who couldn't function. I thought that "remembering" my memories would make me feel better. What I have learned since the hellish time is that what we focus on is what grows in our lives. Focusing on every detail of your trauma over and over again every single day will make that trauma the part of your life that grows so that you can't see much beyond it. I wish I could give this book to anyone who is even contemplating seeing a therapist or buying the book Courage To Heal. There are good therapists out there. I had one to help me climb out of my nightmare. If your therapist suggests that you try to remember things that you don't even know happened, please! please read this book first. If you were abused as a child, grieve it for a time. If you keep on going over and over it each day though, your abuser has not only hurt you as a child, but he is hurting you as an adult. After you feel sad for awhile, you have to pick yourself up and move on to create a happy life for yourself. You cannot change your past, and dwelling on it can only bring pain and shame. All I can say is that this book, not the Courage To Heal, has helped me to heal and to get my family back. May God bless the authors and the publishers for making their work available to me and others like me.

An important book
By Michael Kaan
Loftus was the first to make such a public declaration of skepticism about the theory of repressed and recovered memory, and considering the climate in which this book was written her bravery is commendable. At the time--and still perhaps today--some therapists diagnosed a history of incest within minutes of the intake session, spurious evidence was routinely admissible in the courts, and Multiple Personality Disorder was apparently as common as the flu. Things have changed, and there are more than a few red-faced recovered memory enthusiasts around these days.
One of the things that becomes obvious in this book is the fact that, while the debate was a raging one, few people who took part in it understood what it was really about. The recovered/false memory debate is not about whether the sexual abuse of children is a lie, or that the family is the seat of all evil. It is an essentially scientific debate about the operations of memory and the clinical applications of such knowledge. Loftus navigates through the cultural and rhetorical detritus of the debate to this core issue, and we benefit from her position as an expert researcher.
The book is clearly written for lay people, or for clinicians wanting a very quick summary of the issues. More clinically pertinent summaries of the research findings and theories are available elsewhere. If you're a therapist or researcher looking for professional information, you'll find the journalistic style slow going. However, if you're a lay person, the book is an excellent introduction to the debate.
The core debate that Loftus addresses is not whether or not sexual abuse exists. Rather, what she wisely chose to target was the essential issues of defining "repression" and its validity as a concept, how memory storage and retrieval operate, and what the relationship between psychological trauma and memory impairment is. She demonstrates that the concept of repression is a dubious though not necessarily invalid one, but that far too much assumption and clinical arrogance were invested in the recovered memory mania of the 80s and 90s.
This book was obviously controversial, but despite its lay orientation and stylistic flaws I believe it will endure as an important work in the history of psychotherapy. The legion of detractors demonstrated the truth of Loftus' thesis by construing the book as an attempt to disprove the existence of incest. And, because Loftus is a woman, she was a complicated target and therefore subjected to more condescending and intense attacks. Her accomplishment in this book was not to settle any questions, but to take the risk of attacking cherished, widely held, and richly funded clinical errors that were derailing public mental health and the reputation of psychotherapy. Highly recommended.

Science versus Salem
By Wendy B. Hanawalt
In "The Myth of Repressed Memory," Elizabeth Loftus makes a compelling case for the argument that there is, indeed, no such thing as repressed memory. Using science to challenge the common (mis)understanding of repressed memory, she brings us through a few horrifying cases of people who have been, it seems, wrongly accused of sexual abuse as the result of vulnerable "victims" being coaxed and prodded by zealous law enforcement officials and counselors to see abuse where there has been none. While in no way demeaning the very real experiences of real sexual abuse survivors, Loftus takes us through the ins and outs of memory and the workings of the brain, and demonstrates pretty convincingly that there is no "there" there.

I was interested in this subject because it always seemed to me strange that (particularly in the day care abuse cases of the past few decades) children would come up with the most fantastic stories about hidden tunnels and clowns and ritual murder but there was never, ever any evidence uncovered to that effect. I often thought well, if these satanists are murdering scores of babies in their rituals, why aren't we hearing about the strange disappearance of infants from their cribs? It never made sense to me. It still makes no sense that people hold on to these explanations when, as Loftus points out, all the evidence (and plain common sense) points to the fact that they never happened, that memory is not an object existing in time, but a construct, the product of imagery and suggestion and fear and vulnerability.

Loftus demonstrates, through descriptions of her own scientific studies, just how it easy it is to create a memory of an event that never happened and how, once this memory is implanted, the person having the "memory" will defend it as being absolutely real. It's important that we know this.

Loftus uses the Salem witch trials and more specifically, Arthur Miller's play, "The Crucible" as a literary touchstone for this conversation. It is extraordinary, the parallels between what Miller wrote and what Loftus describes. We are programmed to see monsters under the bed, it seems and Loftus describes this neurological programming with clear and compelling detail.

This book is a description of science and of a sociological/psychological phenomenon, but it reads like a detective novel--a real "can't put it down" piece of writing.

Murder in Havana (Capital Crimes Book 18), by Margaret Truman

Max Pauling, of Murder in Foggy Bottom, is coaxed out of a restless retirement by another "ex-" CIA colleague. The case that tempts him is one involving a large American pharmaceutical firm that may be using a German company as a front to get around the U.S. scientific and technical embargo of Cuba.

What's at stake? An ex-senator, who heads up a drug company, is after big game: the surprising and stunning medical research being conducted by the Cubans to develop a more effective anticancer drug.

Max, who is among other things a pilot, is assured that this will be a purely private assignment—no assassinations, no government to subvert, no informers to turnjust a few easy flights and a little time in the sun. Once in Havana, he makes contact with a ravishing Cuban-American woman who is to be his "translator." Soon, he finds himself hunted as an assassin in a place where murder is sanctioned for a greater good, or greater greed, and those caught in the crossfire are as quickly consumed as a frozen daiquiri.

From Publishers Weekly
In her 18th Capital Crimes mystery, Truman relegates frequent star Mackensie to a supporting role as ex-CIA agent Max Pauling (featured in Murder in Foggy Bottom) takes center stage. Washington, D.C., also plays a supporting role, as Havana, Cuba, becomes the focus and capital crime site of this pedestrian spy-story-cum-political diatribe. The status of Cuban-American relations, the rule of Castro and living conditions in Cuba replace the usual D.C. intrigues. The author indulges in a lot of Castro-bashing, reserving her praise only for the Cuban government's medical care and research that also is at the heart of Pauling's errand. Pauling, a maverick who has found profitable work as a freelance pilot, gets talked into a supposedly quick and easy job in Cuba. A German pharmaceutical company is trying to buy into Cuba's remarkably advanced cancer research. Pauling's job is to find proof that the German firm is acting as a front for an American company. In traditional spy novel fashion, just about everything that could go wrong does, and Pauling must use his wits, skills and luck to avoid the pitfalls caused by the dealings and double-dealings of various factions. Truman paints a bizarre picture of a Cuba where the people are poor, happy and healthy, and spy on one another with gusto while living in constant fear of Castro and his minions. The author's core fans will welcome this new outing, but she won't win new converts with this effort. Agent, Ted Chichak.

From the Inside Flap
Havana may be far from Washington, but DC power brokers are never far from Havana. Neither are danger, deception, and sudden death. That's what draws Max Pauling there. As an ex-CIA, ex-State Department employee, he faces an uneventful early retirement-until he is asked to secretly fly some medical supplies into the mysterious Cuban city.
If Max is looking for excitement, he finds it. First there's his contact, a breathtaking beauty with private plans of her own. Then there's a former senator, in Havana to ease the U.S. embargo, but who may have another, more malevolent, mission. Throw in endless supplies of under-the-table money- not to mention a murder-and Max has landed in a place even more corrupt . . . and more compelling . . . than the U.S. capital itself.

Margaret Truman's Latest Connects Havana to the Beltway
By James E. Carroll
Having read every one of Margaret Truman's Capital Crimes Series, I was surprised with the title of her latest novel. But while the story focuses mostly on Castro's Cuba, there is plenty of inside the Beltway intrigue to satisfy her loyal readers. In typical Truman fashion, she weaves a tale of murder, espionage, diplomacy, politics and suspense that forces the reader to turn the pages in rapid succession. Ex-CIA agent Max Pauling finds himself embroiled in a plot in today's Cuba involving anticancer research, pharmaceutical giants, the USA embargo, the White House and anti-Castro supporters. Truman manages to introduce once more her favorite husband and wife team, Georgetown art gallery owner Annabelle Smith and George Washington University law professor MacKensie Smith, to move the story along. This latest Truman novel has plenty of action and suspense. It features locations in Cuba, DC, London and Germany. It does not disappoint. You won't put it down until you're finished.

Loyalty
By Mary E. Sibley
Max Pauling, formerly of the CIA, has moved from Washington to New Mexico, but he is still a pilot of small planes. It seems that Cuba has first-rate medical research facilities. Max is hired to investigate, on behalf of Signal Labs, a probable situation of a German and American company combining to buy out the Cuban research on cancer drugs. The name of the other company is BTK Industries.

In Cuba Max has the realization he is being followed. The operative he contacts in Cuba may have her own agenda, or may be in the pay of someone else. It is 1995 and life in Cuba is difficult for reason of the imposition of trade sanctions by the United States.

Max Pauling is loyal to fault. In the past he was cited by the agency for remaining too long at a scene and perhaps jeopardizing the mission. In this instance he feels that the death of a German working for the other pharmaceutical company should be examined. Through a translation of a memo Pauling learns that the dead German suffered from the same vice of loyalty, really a sort of idealism.

Cuban doctors, loyal to Cuba and their research projects, do not want their research to be sold to the American company BFK and the German middlemen. More death and scapegoating of Max Pauling are part of the intricate plot. The return to New Mexico of the hero raises the point that he may be ready to leave the insanity of secrecy behind him to achieve a more orderly existence.

The theme of loyalty, misplaced and otherwise, sounds strongly throughout this book. Margaret Truman's rendering of the Washington scene makes everything seem believable.

Intrigue in Havana
By George Webster, Ph.D.,
I like Margaret Truman's mysteries. They're a relief from serial killers, blood and gore, and spooky things. In Murder in Havana, we are quite a distance into the story before we have a murder, and you will quickly put your finger on the likely murderer, but that's fine. The fun of this book is in the hazardous trip that ex-CIA agent Max Pauling takes to Havana. His assignment is to find whether an American pharmaceutical company is secretly trying to circumvent American law to make a deal with Fidel Castro for a cancer treatment. Max knows that you can't trust anyone, and he certainly can't in this story. He is soon in great peril and has to run for his life. The tale is more of an adventure than a mystery, but it has a nice feel of life in Castro's Cuba, and it will keep you turning the pages.

Buried Beneath Us: Discovering the Ancient Cities of the Americas, by Anthony Aveni

A beautifully illustrated look at the forces that help cities grow—and eventually cause their destruction—told through the stories of the great civilizations of ancient America.

You may think you know all of the American cities. But did you know that long before New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, or Boston ever appeared on the map—thousands of years before Europeans first colonized North America—other cities were here? They grew up, fourished, and eventually disappeared in the same places that modern cities like St. Louis and Mexico City would later appear. In the pages of this book, you'll find the astonishing story of how they grew from small settlements to booming city centers—and then crumbled into ruins.

From Booklist
School kids lugged on field trips to the Cahokia mounds near St. Louis may remember a bunch of nondescript hills squeezed between interstate highways. But since Timothy R. Pauketat’s Cahokia: Ancient America’s Great City on the Mississippi (2009), many are taking another look at the sprawling, violent former metropolis. Aveni ranks Cahokia and its earthen pyramids right alongside those of Tenochtitlán and Copán, and indeed distributes the book’s plentiful facts on ancient festivals, rituals, religion, and daily life among the Aztec, Inca, and Maya, paying only periodic special attention to Cahokia. The information is therefore spread a bit chaotically, though there is plenty here of high interest: sports so violent players regularly died, human sacrifice and decapitations, dieties called “Stab Master” and “Pus Master,” and a fascinating examination of the language of glyphs. Roy’s angular black-and-white illustrations suffice for depicting lithe natives, but the building structures themselves appear muddled and indistinct—and it would have been nice to see some photographs of artifacts and sites. Still, enough to slake a thirst for adventure. Grades 5-8. --Daniel Kraus

ok for a non-fiction report
By Deborah Sandford
A fairly interesting read if you can pull through the story like chapters. The author asks questions and speculates, and often confers some very interesting pieces of information. But the wordy non-descript text, unbroken by sidebars and information boxes, blends boringly with the black and white, sometimes confusingly drawn, illustrations. It is informative, and it is interesting, but the pictures are too avant-garde for the intended age group (upper elementary), and again, the prose-like text will not hold it's audience's attention.

A Prayer Journal, by Flannery O'Connor

"I would like to write a beautiful prayer," writes the young Flannery O'Connor in this deeply spiritual journal, recently discovered among her papers in Georgia. "There is a whole sensible world around me that I should be able to turn to Your praise." Written between 1946 and 1947 while O'Connor was a student far from home at the University of Iowa, A Prayer Journal is a rare portal into the interior life of the great writer. Not only does it map O'Connor's singular relationship with the divine, but it shows how entwined her literary desire was with her yearning for God. "I must write down that I am to be an artist. Not in the sense of aesthetic frippery but in the sense of aesthetic craftsmanship; otherwise I will feel my loneliness continually . . . I do not want to be lonely all my life but people only make us lonelier by reminding us of God. Dear God please help me to be an artist, please let it lead to You."

O'Connor could not be more plain about her literary ambition: "Please help me dear God to be a good writer and to get something else accepted," she writes. Yet she struggles with any trace of self-regard: "Don't let me ever think, dear God, that I was anything but the instrument for Your story."
As W. A. Sessions, who knew O'Connor, writes in his introduction, it was no coincidence that she began writing the stories that would become her first novel, Wise Blood, during the years when she wrote these singularly imaginative Christian meditations. Including a facsimile of the entire journal in O'Connor's own hand, A Prayer Journal is the record of a brilliant young woman's coming-of-age, a cry from the heart for love, grace, and art.

From Booklist
Those familiar with O’Connor’s oeuvre know that her strong Roman Catholic faith informs all her work. This is one reason that her recently discovered prayer journal, penned while she attended the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in 1947 and 1948, is such a significant find. Although extremely brief, this series of heartfelt prayers and musings offered up by one of the most gifted writers of her generation provides a uniquely intimate glimpse into the heart, soul, and mind of a deeply religious genius. Guaranteed to excite American-literature buffs and O’Connor scholars, this slim volume also includes photocopies of the original handwritten texts. --Margaret Flanagan

From Bookforum
There's an intimacy and rawness here that's rare even in O'Connor's outwardly autobiographical pieces […] These devotional writings are imprinted with the same humor, brilliance, and attention to life that one finds in her fiction. […] Because the circuitous map of her religious thinking isn't obvious in her stories, secular readers may feel free to ignore it. Nevertheless, as A Prayer Journal suggests, O'Connor might never have come to write any of this fiction had she not been so fiercely direct about her desire to confront, in words, 'that supernatural grace that does whatever it does.' —René Steinke

Review

"When I read Flannery O'Connor, I do not think of Hemingway, or Katherine Anne Porter, or Sartre, but rather of someone like Sophocles. What more can you say for a writer?" --Thomas Merton

"This slender, charming book must be approached with a special tact. To read it feels a little like an intrusion on inwardness itself . . . The brilliance that would make [O'Connor's] fictions literary classics is fully apparent . . . ["A Prayer Journal"] is as eloquent on the subject of creativity as it is on the subject of prayer . . . The prose is absolutely brilliant, sentence by sentence, simile by simile . . . relentlessly inventive . . . [O'Connor's] religious sincerity is beyond question, but the forms of its expression raise many questions. This is no criticism. It is the honorable work of any writer who touches on great matters to provoke . . . This little journal puts its reader a step closer to one touching and remarkable young mind." --Marilynne Robinson, "The New York Times Book Review"

"Miraculous . . . Both a blueprint for her fiction and a prophetic dreaming-out of her life's purpose and pattern . . . Beneath the surface, as recorded on the 47 and a half handwritten pages to which we now have access, [O'Connor] was refining her vocation with the muscularity and spiritual ferocity of a young saint-in-waiting." --James Parker, "The Atlantic"

"A startlingly different view of the religious O'Connor." --Marian Ryan, "Slate"

"If you've already read everything ever written by Flannery O'Connor and crave more, take heart: This recently discovered diary of her long-form letters to God will make you

especially thankful." --Abbe Wright, "O: The Oprah Magazine"

"Perhaps the most intimate writing that has yet surfaced from O'Connor." --Bo Emerson, "The Atlanta Journal-Constitution"

"Religious or not, the daily devotionals written by one of America's greatest writers between 1946 and 1947 are uplifting and inspiring, as well as a great insight into the mind of Flannery O'Connor." --Jason Diamond, "Flavorpill," 10 Must Reads for November

"Gorgeous" --Leon Wieseltier, "The New Republic"

"A fascinating prospect for anyone with an interest in O'Connor's writing, inseparable as it is from her Catholic belief in sin and redemption." --Mark O'Connell, "The Millions"

" "

"I love the O'Connor that shines through these pages . . . Witty . . . Deeply earnest." --Betsy Childs, "First Things"

"This stirring collection of prayers and reflections provides another crucial piece in the enduringly mysterious and endlessly intriguing puzzle that was Flannery O'Connor's life." --Lorraine V. Murray, "The Georgia Bulletin"

" "

"["A Prayer Journal"] offers an honest, intimate, humorous, mysterious, and comforting view into the mind and heart of one of America's greatest writers." --Word on Fire Catholic Ministries

"O'Connor had said, 'I think it is safe to say that while the South is hardly Christ-centered, it is most certainly Christ-haunted.' ["A Prayer Journal"] should be a fine place to see the inner life of one of America's finest fiction writers in history, and an unwavering Christian, as she experiences that haunting herself." --Bible Portal, ChristianPost.com

"These excerpts are raw revelations of a devout young person's struggle . . . You can hear the push and pull, the train of her particular Christianity on a brilliant mind." --Amy Frykholm, "The Christian Century Blog"

"Have you ever read something . . . so sublime that it was hard to talk about with anything resembling coherence. If so, then you'll understand why it is so difficult to articulate my experience of reading Flannery O'Connor's intimate and soul-baring "A Prayer Journal." I closed the book with a combination of awed silence and heart-soaring joy." --Angela Cybulski, Dappled Things: A Quarterly Journal of Ideas, Art, & Faith

"A collection of poignant, lyrical letters to God, written passionately and honestly . . . Many readers may breathe a sigh of relief to learn [O'Connor] had trouble praying. Not that I would wish this on anyone, but her admission makes her less of an untouchable, perfect icon of faith . . . I pray that many readers will experience, as I have, a resounding joy in reading the words of this beloved author again after so many years." --Lorraine Murray, IntegratedCatholicLife.org

" "

"There's metaphysical mystery at the heart of this short journal . . . as well as the seeds of the spiritual life force that coursed through [O'Connor's] fiction." --"Kirkus Reviews"

" "

"[The prayers are] astutely crafted and reveal a masterful writer at work." --"Publishers Weekly"

books are about depth not length
By Clint Schnekloth
Yes, this is a short book. It includes a transcription of Flannery O'Connors prayer journal from her time at the University of Iowa writer's school. But the quality of a book should never be judged by its length.

It should be judged by its texture and depth. And for this reason I consider the book to be essential. The prayers O'Connor has written create a landscape for prayer utterly original in the Christian tradition, if also deeply embedded in it.

I am reading one prayer per night, sometimes two. They are leading me into new spiritual insights each time. I see myself in new ways through her prayers.

The book also includes a facsimile of the journal itself. It's really a pleasure to be able to see her hand-writing first hand, to imagine her as a young student writing each day in this journal.

I guarantee if you buy this book, when it arrives, you will do more than read it. You will cherish it.

FLANNERY AT LARGE
By James E. O'Leary
What the prayer journal did for me was to drive me back to my Flannery library and start all over again. I now can read her with a new insight. In Brad Gooch's marvelous biography, I had learned how much her Catholic faith meant to her in that far off place in Iowa, where she was homesick and far from her Savannah roots, where she had, in the words of William Sessions, received from her southern and Catholic world, the view of a coherent universe. Gooch tells us that Flannery told a friend that she was able to go to Mass every single morning while at the Iowa Writers workshop. She went there to Mass for three years and never met a soul, she said, nor any of the priests, but it was not necessary. "As soon as I went in the door I was at home." What I didn't know was how willing she was to take a deep plunge into the depths of Catholicism. It is fitting that William Sessions was the one who brought this hidden journal to us. In the index of "The Habit of Being," the collected letters of Flannery O'Connor, Sessions turns up 28 times. He was a trusted friend and has turned out to be O'Connor's leading expert, among hundreds of scholarly admirers. I will bet you anything Flannery never thought her personal, private journal would see the light of day. I don't think she wore her religion on her sleeve and said one time she didn't even want to be known as a Catholic writer but hoped that she would just be known as a good writer, an honest writer and a real artist. I will bet you also that she would not like to be known as a mystic but she darned sure was. Like Dorothy Day (and they were very much aware of each other), she would have scoffed at the idea of being canonized a saint. Dorothy said she hoped that they wouldn't get to trivialize her that way and I can just see Flannery's writing the same thing in one of her letters. Flannery doesn't claim to know any more about the after life than any of the rest of us. She did say in one of her letters that if all you see is God in the beatific vision, then all you will want to see is God: the statement of a mystic. You would be disappointed in this journal if you expected it to be some spiritual advice or descriptions of visions or quotable nuggets. What I got from it was a wonderful insight into the human Flannery. Flannery struggled along with the rest of us with doubts, fears and pleas for mercy. The point is she never stopped struggling and wondering. All of us who have read and reread her works can only be grateful she never stopped.

Well worth reading for any literary or Catholic aficionado
By J. Schutz
O'Connor's words, spirit, and even her struggle here are deeply Catholic. She speaks my own mind for me, saying words that I would have said if I had the gift that she had. Her form of prayer, her approach to it, her persistence in it, her discouragement with her own progress, all reveal a very quintessentially Catholic spirituality. I bought this book for my literary daughter, but it has now inspired me to undertake reading O'Connor's body of literature.

Requiescat in pace, Miss O'Connor.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-- Nate is back with another perplexing problem. In this case, second base (a gloopy purple octopus belonging to teammate Oliver) is missing, All that can be found are two purple plastic arms in the dirt. At first, suspicions fall on teammate Annie's dog Fang, known to be capable of eating nearly anything, and although he is in possession of another of the octopus's arms, he is proven innocent. By following clues and using reasoning, Nate the Great solves the mystery. As usual, Sharmat does not condescend to her audience, and readers are provided with enough information to find the answer themselves. Subtle humor sparkles through the young detective's narration and his interactions with his friends, who more than adequately represent ethnic diversity and avoid gender stereotypes. Budding mystery fans will line up for this one. --Donna L. Scanlon, Lancaster County Library, PA

Excellent

I love the "Nate the Great" books by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat. They keep my daughter's interest and she loves the characters and Nate always having his pancakes. She tries to read the books herself and I love any book that challenges her to do that. I hope to see more books by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat. I feel she's a talented author and should be applauded for her children's works.

The Series Is Strong No Matter Which Books You Choose
By Pop Bop
After seeing so many references to the "Nate the Great" books as being classics I decided to try the first one and a few others. The first one was, well, great. "Nate the Great, San Francisco Detective", which is way out there at number 22, was just as good. This book is right from the heart of the series. It is the 14th in the series, first published in 1992. (The series started in 1972.) The illustrations are by Marc Simont, who did the first 20 books.

There are some very, very good middle grade noir books that feature a middle grade Sam Spade style detective, and I like them because the tight plotting, snappy dialogue, and clean style is not only entertaining but a good model for young readers and writers. Well, this is basically a chapter book version of that that has the same virtues.

Here, we have the usual pals this time around, including Annie, psycho-dog Fang, Oliver the pest and strange Esmeralda.

The writing is crisp, which fits perfectly with the noir style and with an early reader's need for sharp, clean, punchy sentences. There is dry humor. There are appealing sidekicks and supporting characters. And, unlike a lot of sloppy mysteries, these books are built on real clues, rigorous logical thought, and common sense. On top of all that, Nate actually displays a bit of that Sam Spade weary hero character that makes noir so special. These really are amongst the most accomplished and stylish of the chapter books and are a happy find.

Please note that I found this book while browsing in our local library. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

I really liked the book because it talks about some kids that play baseball togheter and when the second base was stollen they decided to look for it. Nate the Great worked hard to find it. He found it behind the bookcase in Oliver's house. I also liked the name he gave his dog: Sludge. I think he is a great detective because he was able to solve the case.
